One of our fave spots in NYC. Def the best for vegan Dim Sum. Service is quick and efficient, dim sum is always so soo good! Our faves are the turnip cakes, rice rolls, and the “Zhong zi” the Sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves. But really, you can’t go wrong with anything on the dim sum menu. Vegan dim sum is so hard to find, def try it when you are in NYC.
The most phenomenal vegetarian dim sum in Manhattan Chinatown! The food is absolutely delicious and the service is phenomenal. My friends who eat meat say they cannot tell the difference! The food is incredibly flavorful and the staff is wonderful here. Competitive prices for one of the best experiences I had while in Manhattan! Thank you for this gem of a restaurant
Recommend? Yes.I got the house special congee with breadsticks, bean curd rolls, steamed taro dumplings, and green tea paste bun.The congee with breadsticks was like heaven in a spoon. Its perfect for fall. I cant describe the flavors, but the taste is familiar and simply brings me home. If I have the chance to come back Ill try the two kinds mushroom congee.I didnt care much for the bean curd rolls and the steamed taro dumplings because of the stuffing. One of the ingredients had a slight crunch and I didnt care for that. The green tea paste bun had a hint of floral. Its definitely not like matcha green tea. I enjoyed this very much towards the end of my meal with the hot tea.
Where has the place been all my life?! As a vegan I usually have two things I can eat on a dim sum list, so having almost 30 items to choose from was already a winner. The food was so delicious. The bbq bun is better than a lot of regular dim sum places. The rice rolls is were so good, we got the mushroom and another flavor which I forgot. This is my happy place. Would love if they didn’t use single-use plastic for sauces, less waste is better.
Came for lunch on a Friday and sat outside. Each section has a fan that you can turn on when it’s warmer. I’m not vegetarian, but heard great things about this place and loved it. We got the pea pod leaves rice roll, kabocha pumpkin pastry, fried taro custard, Buddha bean curd roll, and BBQ meat buns. Only thing I might not get again was the Buddha bean curd roll. The BBQ meat buns were incredible, really similar to actually having the BBQ pork. Excited to come back!
This restaurant caters to the vegan wanna be in this vegetarian. I randomly chose this restaurant while visiting the city based on reviews. What a pleasant and unexpected food journey!! The menu is expansive, may be a bit overwhelming because I really needed a mini personal buffet where I could try everything on the menu. Service was good, quick and efficient. The food was fresh and delicious with very generous portions.
WOW! This restaurant is really spectacular. Brought some friends from out of state here (my idea) after showing them the Statue of Liberty (oy — not my idea). Let me tell you, it was worth it! You just can’t get kosher Chinese in NJ where I live. This was a real treat! We did the dim sum and got vegan sushi and several spicy noodle dishes. Be advised that the portions are huge here — we had to take some of ours to go. I will definitely be coming back again next time I am in lower Manhattan. It’s super packed/busy but you’ll understand why as soon as you try the food.
Wow, I was not expecting to love this at all and man was I shocked! I am a meat lover and rarely enjoy vegan options. This food was fantastic! I enjoyed almost all of the dishes we tried. I didn’t miss the meat at all, except in the vegetarian bbq bun. There were a lot of peanuts so beware for allergies. Service was pretty slow and we were the only people in the restaurant. However, this is a great option for dim sum even if you aren’t vegetarian. Will definitely return!
Good food and fast service. There was much more variety than at other vegetarian places I’ve been to - I actually forgot multiple times that I was eating vegetarian food. Most of the food was good but not mind blowing, though I loved their goji berry dessert - the texture was fun and the flavor was more complex than expected. The food was a lot less expensive than expected for the quantity. They sat a group of 7 very quickly Sunday at noon.
We cant say enough positive things about this restaurant. The service and the food were excellent. The restaurant is not fancy in any way but the food matters, and they got that right. Massive menu selection, all 100% vegan and when served, was piping hot. Service was excellent and very friendly, and the cost of the meal for 2 with starters, main course and tip were less than $80.00. The only issue was the size of the portions. They were massive. A party of 4 would have dined happily on our meal. We hate to waste food, especially such good food. Even if you are not vegetarian or vegan, give this place a go.
I came here on a Saturday for dinner for indoor dining. The place is really clean and the tables had dividers in between which I appreciated. For food, we got the Fried Taro Duck Entree, Lobster in Black Bean Sauce, and Pan-Fried Noodles with BBQ Meat. I didnt realize all the dishes had some deep-fried element, but it was not bad.The fried taro duck entree came with duck sauce on the side and was on top of some shredded lettuce. The duck was actually made from bean curd. The lobster was alright. It came with some broccoli and candied walnuts. There was no black bean sauce, but it came with a side of sweet mayo. Its similar to the mayo shrimp dish in Cantonese cuisine. The pan-fried noodles were great with the BBQ meat. That was my favorite dish. It did not make me miss meat at all and the sauce was pretty good.I would love to come back and try more dishes! Definitely a win even if you are not vegetarian.
Tips: Try to order the dim sum fast as it usually takes a bit of time to prepare the food especially during busy lunch hours.Amazing and tasty food considering there is no meat product used. Service is efficient. Minimalists deco but has beautiful Chinese calligraphy artwork hung.Prices are reasonable.
Loved the idea of vegetarian dim sum, but I think I was expecting more vegetables. It was a lot of rice/carbs.Crispy bean curd had great texture.Sticky rice in “bamboo” leaf was delicious.Steamed buns were quite fluffy.Fried taro custard was not our favorite. Was a little off put by the lackluster effort in cleaning our table.
You cant go wrong in this vegetarian heaven! But carnivores will no doubt find something to eat here as well. Prices are reasonable, the portions at the right size and the staff was very helpful. Dont forget to look at the dumpling menu. The complementary tea is a great touch.
This place is ALWAYS on point for me, whether its delivery or dining in. I had one minor hiccup with one of the many deliveries I had from them. Besides that its great! I got my TRUE CARNIVORE co-workers hooked on a few of the dishes here too. The most favorite to get amongst us here at work is the BBQ ribs as a side dish, the BBQ rib fried rice and bbq ribs with cabbage and brown rice(see pics). Thats the only mock meat NOT soy based. Id refer my other meat eating friends/family here as well if they are on this side of town.
As a vegetarian for many years, I can’t say that I’ve taste really good Chinese/Asian food. I’m very picky but the food was tasty, full of flavor and the SOY was awesome ! Would definitely come back for the “Chicken” Lo Mein. The seafood wasn’t my forte (but I’m that wasn’t the fault of the restaurant just my picky ness). Would’ve given a 5 star if the bathroom was cleaner , but the staff was friendly and kind. The prices were manageable, would recommend and would return !
A great vegetarian restaurant that captures the essence of light, refreshing, vegetarian food. You dont miss anything while eating here. There is a slight overreliance on crunchy textures for the dim sum, and the shrimp dumplings could not really be called veggie shrimp dumplings ..they were more of a crunchy celery dumpling. The flavours are vastly superior to the nearby Budda Bodhai, which is a imitation made through sleazy means. For example, the soup is rich and does not use the trick of thickeners.
Everything was good but nothing we tried was absolutely “wow” worthy. Definitely a good spot for veggie friendly Chinese food so you don’t have to worry about little things like whether the oil touched meat or if something is cooked with a fish sauce. Portions were sizable and the price was decent. Service was quick and they start you with tea as opposed to tap water which I thought was a cute touch. We dined indoors and there wasn’t anyone else at the time so we felt safe doing so. They also have the tables decently spaced out with large plexiglass shields between them.
Really good dim sum even if you are not vegetarian/vegan. the best dishes were the beef rice noodle roll and the sticky rice siu mai. we also loved the vegetarian chicken... so crispy and delicious. the char siu bun was good, but a little too sweet for my taste. the zongzi (sticky rice in lotus) was okay, but it was missing some flavor/salt. they have both indoor and outdoor seating right now- the indoor seating is spread out with a plexiglass divider from floor to ceiling between tables.
Some of the best vegetarian food Ive ever had! Ive been to Buddhist temples to eat for religious celebration and gatherings my whole life and I shouldnt keep earthly desire but I desire the fried rice served here. It compares to this temple Ive been to in Nanjing China and the flavors are subtle but have great depth and meld together so well. I am full physically and spiritually.
One of the best meals I have ever had!!!!!!!!! I have been vegan for 5 years and I have never had Chinese food like this! We got the chicken lo main that was my absolute favorite (10/10), the bbq meat was amazing just a touch too sweet (9/10), the green beans were so garlicky and crispy (9/10), the veggie fried rice was a great standard staple (9/10), and the spring rolls were nice and crispy (10/10). I cannot wait to go back to this place for dim sum (ends after 4 PM :( which we missed). You have to check out this place! And to make it even better- it’s BYOB!!!
Superbe en toute occasion. Unique familiale place. One of NYCs greatest original certified kosher vegetarian places to eat-in and dine in the Lower East Side’s touristy Mott Street !! A smorgasbord of Chinese dim sum delicacies awaits every returning customer young and old alike. A very super-popular venue that serves up a wide-array of all-time favorites, all very vegan varieties, as tasty and delicious as the original dishes themselves! The air climatisation during the hotter days gives an exceptional ambiance in New York’s long summer months. And really honed home-runs with the anytime takeout for that weekday or weekend getaway sprint headed homeward hound. This establishment is completely《certified kosher》keeping its many patrons happy and those who love to indulge in a fanciful brunch -- Hong Kong-style to start off the day with friends and family members year-round !!Located within walking distance to the J, and Brooklyn Bridge correspondence to the (4 & 6-trains) makes an easy transfer point to and from the Supreme Court, the fountain, and Lower Broadway.
The fried food, which makes up the majority of the menu, tasted extremely strongly like old, rancid frying oil. It was also drenched in oil. We had the General Tsos chicken, the taro duck and some dim sums yesterday and are both still feeling very ill. I was very excited about the restaurant but it ruined 2 whole days of our visit here.
Beech mushroom rice rolls are elite 😋Ive gone through 1/3 of the menu here some good, some not to my taste but I always come back. Food always comes out quick and Ive only had pleasant experiences. My favorites as someone with a simple paletteKabocha Pumpkin SoupBuddha Delight with Pan Fried NoodlesShredded Shitake with BroccoliPrawn with Walnuts
Ever since I got my vegetarian Laksa in Singapore, Ive been on a search for the same dish in the New York.I couldnt believe it when I saw Laksa on the menu. I came here multiple times now for dim sum and lunch, but this was the first time ordering Laksa.Laksa: 5/5So good. On par with the amazing one I had back in Singapore. This is a must try if you like Laksa. The soup base is flavorful and it has the right combination of vegetables. Perfect noodle soup and a hidden gem.3 Cup Chicken: 3/5So crunchy, so tasty, but not without a sacrifice. Theres nothing to balance the dish. Imagine getting french fries and thats it - no ketchup, no sauce, no nothing. This is exactly what this dish is, but its so crunchy and tasty. Do give it a try if that doesnt bother you.Cedar Fried Rice: 1/5Quite lacking, Id say. Went to a similar chain back in Queens and their cedar fried rice was so good, so thought it might be the same here. Unfortunately, it was just rice, cedar flavored and salted. I would not get again.ServiceGreat! Super helpful staff and very accommodating. I always like coming here because of that.AmbianceQuite normal! Outdoor dining due to Covid and limited indoor dining. Theres hand sanitizer at each table, so I appreciate the resource to keep the community sanitized and clean. This was my third time coming here. I would come again. As a vegetarian, this is a must stop if youre in Chinatown.
I usually dont go into vegan restaurants as a meat eater. However, the chicken fried rice and the curry fish balls here are so bussin... Been having the chicken fried rice at least once a week and I never get tired of it. The curry fish balls consistency isnt too far off from real fish balls, and the mushroom makes a really nice substitution. The food is good enough that Im willing to sit and dine in in the summer even when their AC is broken.
The menu has no picture, and the description of the menu is very misleading. When I asked, the waiter does not explain to us. The service attitude is really bad. When I request to replace the order, the boss just refused it and blamed it’s all my fault. The “FRIED” noodle is just so different from the traditional fried noodle, and they just didn’t differentiate it clearly in the menu. I looked forward to the restaurant but it just ruined my whole day even my whole trip to NYC.
Havent been back in over a year. Place has been updated with a refreshing and inviting vibe for a Kosher Vegetarian restaurant in Chinatown. We had a craving for take-out and the lunch specials were reasonable with no extra charge for brown rice and either a soup or spring roll. Everything we ordered was delicious! Will come back again.
My friend havent arrive yet. Shes walking over from canal street. This restaurant wont give me a table unless my friend is here. The place was empty. Only 4 tables were being used out of 11 tables. He wont let me sit and wait at a table till my friend arrives. Waiter always ask about my friend arrival time. If my friend wasnt vegan I would not come here. 1 star for horrible service.
This is an excellent option for any vegans! I decided to come here with two friends from college and was not disappointed. We had 3 dishes from here- the roast pork appetizer, the black pepper chicken and the organic tofu with basil. All of which were excellent and we intend to come back the next time we have time. The service was very nice, and the noise was low, so you can easily have a conversation.Edit- Went with 2 friends in August 2021 for lunch and food is still good. However service isnt so great. I understand that theres outdoor seating as well, but service is slow and not very attentive for tea refills. Also, we were rushed out for sure. The server snatched the check out of my hand while paying.
Great service and value for the amount of food. The 7.5 lunch special is such a steal. You get an entree with rice and soup. The mixed veggie meat comes with a variety of soy based meat and was delicious. Its a bit too sweet to cater to western taste. Still its pretty good!
Very good food and a nice atmosphere. It can be a bit of a wait if you arrive in peak hours but its nice and quiet of you go as soon as it opens. The service is good and friendly, but there is little explanation of what each dish entails. The food itself is delicious, which I can testify to having tried the sweet and sour vegan chicken, dumplings, spring roll and sweet meat buns. Its slightly expensive for a Chinatown restaurant but the food really is very good.
It was my first order from this place and I was really shocked with the poor quality. The bag was drenched with orange chicken sauce had a small leak the broccoli was not fresh, looked very wilted and old. Tasted really bad. The fake chicken drenched in orange sauce was ok.
Had an amazing experience. Their selection for the vegan items are just out of this world. We started with some hot & sour soup and wonton soup. Both tasted good, specially the wonton was warm but made me felt refreshed 😌. For appetizers we got BBQ vegetarian meat, the first bite and I was in love with the flavor and the way it was prepared. I was not able to put my fork down. Main course we ordered Shredded Gluten & Pickeled Veg in Black Bean Sauce. The Shredded Gluten was really crispy and delicious, the veggies were good as well but the ratio of green bell pepper was way too much. It is also relatively pocket friendly and the amount of food you get is plentiful. The staff was really friendly and helpful with all the questions we had. I would definitely visit again. I have already recommended this restaurant to few of my friends. Definitely worth a visit.
Most times when places make vegan/vegetarian alternatives to traditional dishes, it turns into a fusion of sorts - not this place! They stay true to the original flavours of each dish.Great place, fast service, can be a bit of a wait during peak hours, but definitely worth the wait!
Amazing food! We ordered the tofu sesame broccoli, sweet Bbq veg “meat”, dim sum, dumplings, spring rolls and tofu cheesecake. It came out super fresh, hot, quickly and tasted amazing! Facility was clean so were restrooms. Appreciated the quite atmosphere and had an excellent lunch. Thank so much. Worth the trip to visit.
A great great great for vegetarians! Close your eyes and point at a thing in the menu and it will be delicious and it will be vegetarian.I recommend the Chow Fun Ribs with mixed veggies in black bean sauce ! Yum! Also any of their pan fried noodles.I will definitely be coming here again.
5.6.18 - Never fails. We ordered the House Special as normal, the watercress dumplings, the mushroom congee, and the beef chow fun. Service is always nice and relatively fast. You should arrive before 11:30 to get a table immediately, or you could be waiting 15-45 minutes. on a weekend.8.19.17 - Another after Dim Sum experience with the family and it never gets old. Consistently good, which is incredibly important when youre looking forward to eating certain dishes, like the House Special Tofu.***ORIGINAL REVIEW*** Ive been going here for years and the food is consistently good. Its Kosher so youll see a diverse group of customers. The staff is generally nice and attentive as well. Do yourself a favor and go for it despite it being vegetarian. I promise youll find something that will bring you back.
I love this place. Can I end the review there?Atmosphere: so clean. A lot of tables. Friendly. Casual. Affordable. Bright. So many good things since they just re-opened. I hope they can keep up with the soon to come crowds. This is a gem.Service: so fast and friendly. I can’t imagine anyone coming here and disliking it. The food came out quite fast and hot which means they just finished cooking it. I love my food hot and steaming.Food: It’s your classic Chinese food but vegan! What can go wrong? Let’s start that it’s not the healthiest but they do have healthier options. If you want healthy, go get a salad. If you want Chinese food, come here. Sometimes you just want those good feeling carbs and the smell of soy sauce that we’ve all had as children. It’s great here.We had almost one of everything. The best part is it’s not so expensive. My favorite thing to do it’s to order their lunch special and eat it at the park.
Great to go to a vegan dim sum restaurant! The mock Szechuan beef was great, as were the chicken tofu rolls (extremely chickeny!) And the soup dumplings! Shrimp dumplings were very realistic in flavour but the texture of the filling was a little odd for me, but my boyfriend said these were his favourite! We also had a wonton soup, mild and warming and a hot and sour soup (bf says 10/10). Service was a little abrupt but not bad. Enjoyed our time here, recommend a visit for great vegan food!
As a visitor to New York and a vegan, I was a little nervous about cost and variety when dining out.Buddha Bodai was hands down my favourite restaurant experience. While they are not 100% vegan, about 95% of the menu is and WOW is the food legit, delicious and affordable. From the congee to the cheesecake, everything was so delicious I actually left feeling too full(!)The atmosphere is busy; with groups and individuals enjoying full tables of food and while the staff arent going to ask you about your day, they are quick, thorough and perfectly polite.Veggie, vegan or omni, Buddha Bodai is a must and a visit you will not regret.
The best vegetarian restaurant in Chinatown, where non-meat cuisine isn’t just offered as an inconvenient, gratuitous afterthought but one that’s front and center on the menu. It’s when the focus on flavor transcends protein sources that elevates this cuisine to an art form, definitely a safe haven to dine at multiple times in the week.
OMG! one of my favorite places Ive ever eaten. There are tonnnnns of vegetarian and vegan faux meat options(even jellyfish and shark fin!!!), plus meatless staples. The menu is labeled clearly making it so easy to order vegan. Everything we ordered was incredible but the sesame chicken in particular was out of this world. Very much enjoyed my visit here!
Im not a vegetarian but I thought the food was made well. There are imitation meats that really taste like meat too. The food is a bit on the saltier side. My family enjoyed their pumpkin soup and tofu covered fried skin that tastes like egg dish (didnt know the dishs name) the most. Serving family-style dishes.
I have been coming to this restaurant for the past decade. Absolutely enjoys the services and food at this location. For anyone on or just simply like plant-based dishes, this is an absolute spot I would recommend and vouch for. There are so many dishes I would recommend; a few I suggest you try are the bbq pork (dimsum or side dish), shredded shiitake mushroom w. broccoli, house special tofu, pineapple fried rice.
Great place, the price is very reasonable and the food is really, really good. multiple dishes had a gluten free option, apart from the whole restaurant being vegetarian, which is very cool. great service as well. the sweet tapioca dumpling is especially amazing, i highly recommend it!
Went on a friends recommendation for a dinner. We got there early but the place got packed pretty soon in the evening. The service was okayish. Food was okayish too. I found it little on the bland side. My husband liked the BBQ pork rest we orders dumplings and seaweed rolls but they were ordinary. Maybe it was wrong selection of items but I didnt enjoy the place or food and not at all excited to go back.
Great Chinese restaurant that is onion and garlic free - vegetarian and kosher. Its cool going to a place that I can pretty eat 90% of whats on the menu (10% contain mushrooms which I also dont eat). So awesome! Some staff dont speak English so well - that can be challenging.Boy - they get busy and still they serve all orders really quickly - very impressed 👌
It was an amazing experience. I got exactly what I was craving for, Chicken Lo Mein. The chicken was replaced by something that tasted incredible, couldnt feel the absence of chicken at all. Its a kosher vegan, cosy restaurant in downtown Manhattan. My friend and I went there for lunch and found out they have a pretty nominal lunch deal (Monday-Friday) where you can enjoy to choose between soup/spring roll as the an appetizer, a main course from the lunch menu and unlimited refills of green tea.
Be careful of other vegetarian dimsum restaurants in the neighborhood! This one is worth the wait, get a bubble drink or a pastry nearby to tide you over. The lotus paste dumplings are the best ever, says the wife. And watch out for 2 things:1. if you are one of the few who dont like taro or turnips.2. Overeating: things go down a little too easily when theyre this yummy 😋,
A little disappointing, to be honest. We read reviews talking about Dim Sum and went to try it, but arriving there for dinner said they only served Dim Sum until 4pm. So we asked for an entrance with various sorts of things together. Only what was good was the BBQ meat. When we went to ask for the dishes, they said the kitchen was already closed. It was not a good experience.
Still surprised that everything here is vegetarian/vegan. I came here with a few friends and we were all in shock when we actually tasted the dishes. We ended up getting a few /small plates to try everything out and there was absolutely nothing that was bad. If you’re in the area, you have to try this place out. I know I’ll be coming back for sure.
The food is pretty good. I recommend the hot and sour soup, buddha rolls dim sum, any of the fried chicken. The food 3.5 stars but the service 1. I am tired of the attitude. The young cashier, is rather rude, especially towards Asian Chinese customers. He is very polite to most, not all non-Asian. This is week was my birthday and his usual trying to skip over to accommodate his non-Asian customers did it for me and just made me sad on my day off. Especially since not only did I use to dine in but ordered significant amount of take outs. And when they forget to pack something, I dont call to complain, I would let it go. But I should have figured I have seen them acting very rude towards delivery people. I get it its a kosher vegetarian dim sum labeled restaurant, making it popular. It use to be prepandemic a touristy restaurant. Oh they were fine and nice when they barely had dinner back in 2021. During the surrounding pandemic time period, I went there to support Chinatown businesses but it seems they prefer I go elsewhere, no problem. There are at least 2 other similar restaurants, and both could use the business, and one is nearly vegan cause they dont use certain ingredients. Then if I dont want dim sum, there are vegetarian restaurants, vegetarian friendly places and if not in Chinatown the areas nearby. Bittersweet 😑
Some dishes here really hit the mark. Some did not. The dimsum was awesome. Shiitake mushroom duck was also awesome. In general the imitation meat was also quite surprisingly good.Probably a 4 stars but I want to support vegan food so 5 stars.I am not vegan for reference.
Literally the best Chinese food I have ever had- I keep kosher so I can never have like actual Chinese food but this place is so good and vegan too. I also have celiac so I love all the gluten free options. Get the shrimp dumplings and the vegan cold jellyfish they are sooo good!!
I went here again and only ordered from the dim sum menu. These are great. Steer clear of the other big menu.----------The mock meats are very underwhelming because they dont do a good job of imitation. We ordered a lobster dish, taro duck, fried oyster, and fish balls. The fish balls were the only reasonable dish. We couldnt tell which dish was the lobster and which was the taro duck because the lobster meat was more like mock duck. The taro duck itself was more of a pastry than a mock meat.Lastly, the fried oyster was an immense disappointment. It was just a white button mushroom which was battered and deep fried. Could they just call it fried mushroom please?!
Back in 2019 I placed a delivery order and within minutes I received an angry phone call complaining about how much I tipped. After I finally got a word in I said that I would tip extra in cash and that got the person on the phone to calm down. I had to tip extra because of this and I felt very attacked. I have not been back since even though the food is quite good. Its not a good policy to yell at your customers and demand more money.
LOVED everything about this restaurant and my meal, and am looking forward to eating here again the next time Im in Chinatown. I placed a to-go order and not only was the gentleman at the host stand very patient, friendly, and helpful, but my order was ready in a timely manner and most importantly, everything was DELICIOUS. So grateful for quality vegetarian/vegan options! I walked to the nearby Columbus park and enjoyed my lunch special of General Tsos chikn with white rice and hot and sour soup, and also got some sort of tofu skin appetizer stuffed with mushrooms and watercress...everything was flavorful and the lunch special portion was larger than I expected. There is a $10 minimum for paying with a card. Absolutely recommend this place!! 🥦
Number 1 Vegan/Vegetarian Chinese food in the World. Fact. Ive been to Hong Kong and China, and I can tell you with certainty that Budha Bodai on 5 Mott St is absolutely the best of the best in their food category. Also, they have one of the best and largest Dim Sum selections in the country. Satisfaction guaranteed.#FoodMeet
Amazing vegan and vegetarian food!! Im a vegetarian and didnt realize this was a vegetarian restaurant but was so excited when they told me!!! I had General Tsos chicken which I loved the real meat version when I was a child and this taste idential, if not better! Incredible food!!!! Would definitely go back and recommend anyone (even if they eat meat) to go here. Its also really cheap! Less than $20 for 2 meals!!
Ill admit that when I came here last was a few years ago, but I truly havent stopped thinking about it. As a long-time vegetarian, I was extremely impressed by the food here. Even my omnivorous family agreed that the food was great. I often will tell people try this substitute, it tastes exactly like the real thing! just for them to say that is nothing like real meat. However, my meat-eating companions agreed that the food here tastes like real meat. If I accidentally eat any meat, even just a bite or two, I will be sick the rest of the day. This was definitely 100% vegetarian!
Food is good. but very bad experience with customer service. I ordered online for food in lunch special. It was $8 and i had gone to pick it up hence i gave 10% tip which was the first option available. However, when i reached there it started to rain outside and i requested if i could sit there and eat, the restaurant was almost empty. The person at the counter refused first and said i didnt give a tip. To which i responded saying i did ,he went to check the tip and came back saying i only gave 85 cents in order to humiliate me. i left the restaurant and i will never go back there, they are very rude and inconsiderate, i gave more than 10% tip for which they tried to be nasty about. I have ordered several times from there. BUT NEVER AGAIN. If he could have just said to add extra tip since i was eating there, i would have happily done that, but the person was being sarcastic and rude.
Dinner options are plenty but out of the 6 dishes we ordered, none of them were edible. I had to take them back to the hotel only because they were also pricey.Reviews on the dishes we ordered-Rice: Dry and old / worse than Trader Joe’s frozen riceBBQ pork appetizer: overly salted and sweetFried Cantonese noodles: worse than dry instant noodles. The shredded meat is slimy and gross3 cup chicken: took about 30 minutes to make, the chicken is really bean curd (why they can’t use soy curl or seitan is beyond me)… no basil flavor whatsoever.. anyone knows 3 cup chicken would toss this in the garbageDim sum appetizer: mildly edible but looks sad, almost leftover from the previous day.Salted fish fried rice: the dish lacks coloring but reeks fishy aroma. May be okay for fish eater, but when the dish tastes nothing but salt and smells like fish with no substances?I wish we could get our money back on this meal.. it was just sad and depressing.
OMG! I saw the YouTube videos and read the reviews! I thought people were lying, but they are not! Those ribs are ah-may-ZING!!!!!! I cant believe I never tried them before! That sauce is too die for! I just keep going back! and their prices are just like a regular Chinese food spot! Try it! You wont regret it!
Its basic, but the general Tsos vegetarian chicken was rather good. Not too crispy and not too gooey. The hot and sour soup was pretty spicy and good.We also tried a tofu dish (cant remember exactly what it was) and the tofu was SO SOFT it was almost impossible to grab with chopsticks. It was an okay dish, to be fair, but we were strugggling with the tofu.Service was fast and attentive. They also checked our vaccine cards as soon as we entered the building. This restaurant has some outdoor covered seating like most of NYC has now.
Great experience and service. Food was simply a 4/5 star level of flavor. If you work nearby it’s a good spot to have some food if you don’t want to pay too much. Nice portion size, but I don’t agree with not automatically serving a serving of rice with the main dishes. If you’re a tourist, you may like it. I just expect better— it wasn’t spicy at all.
This place is so delicious! 🥟 Buddha Bodai has an amazing variety of vegan, vegetarian, kosher, and gluten-free dishes. 🍜 Had the 10-piece dumplings 🥟 appetizer and it was out of this world! 🌏 Definitely also try the General Tso Chicken 🍗 on a bed of Broccoli 🥦! Portion sizes 🍽️ are huge! Staff was super nice and the service was quick. This is the perfect spot for a group dinner. Prices are super affordable too! 💸 I wish I came here more often!
Again, another great experience here! So much so, that I drove in a large pickup through rush hour traffic. It was my first time actually driving in NYC. That should tell you how great the service and the food is! And, its all vegan! Since we were headed back to Central PA, I order extra to go! One of my absolutely favorite vegan restaurants.
Food had good flavor, and great that you could order anything on the menu as a vegetarian. Place did not have tea like you usually get at a dim sum restaurant. Some items were very close to what you get at dim sum restaurants however some other items were disappointing. We ordered shrimp rice rolls and only had few pieces of faux shrimp. Pork ribs didnt have the same sauce or flavor profile. Stuffed bell peppers were deep fried instead of pan fried. Slightly disappointing.
By sharing this review,we are very upset its not the food but THE SERVER/ THE WAITER whom really had a kinda ATTITUDE ..we did not expect very nice friendly type but at least show your polite way to answer questions and checking food orders !!! Since all of us are ASIAN yet still show the bad side of it...
Very rare to find a vegan dim sum place, let alone a good one! Affordable too!! We’d eat at this place at least 2 times each time I visit NY. Our favorites are the shark fin porridge and the cha-Shu steamed cake. But all other dishes are great that we’ve tried. Haven’t ordered from the regular menu yet. Maybe next time!
I am usually into BBQ meats when Im roaming Chinatown so dining in a vegetarian spot is a rare occurrence for me. My fellow bestie and I loved the outdoor covered seating. Each table section was separate from the other for privacy and COVID precautions. And each table had a button - press for service, help with the menu or for a refill... Very cool feature. The vegetarian options were so plentiful, several times I forgot it was all vegetarian. The mock meat options were fantastic. I enjoyed the dim sum menu the most.
Good food. Interior of restaurant is clean and pleasing decor. Quick service by efficient staff.Nothing extra special about this place as compared to some other vegetarian dim sum places in the same area. Nothing wrong with this place either.Congested for wheel chair access and seating area
Prior to eating at this restaurant, I was given a recommendation to eat here, but not told this was vegan. As a non-vegetarian consumer, my nonexistent expectations were blown out of the water by the taste and the textures of the food. I will continue the chain of recommendations for Buddha Bodai.
I wished I can give negative star. Food is terrible. Rice is dry like papper. Service is terrible. I can not control my tips. I got forced by waitress I need to pay at least 15% tip. When I order an meal rice is not included. This is such a ripe off!! The used cheap material vegetarian meat. I do not recommend this place. Please take ur money go some where else.
Wonderful dim sum. I’m not a vegetarian (I try to reduce meat consumption when I can) and can honestly say this ranks very evenly for me against traditional non-vegetarian dim sum spots. Service was friendly. Wait was not too long when my party got there on the weekend, but we did see a line build up. I recommend going early on Saturday or Sunday.
If you are vegetarian this restaurant is must visit in New York and even if your not vegetarian. The quality and variety of the popular dim sum items and all vegetarian is incredible, all of which are tasty and reasonably priced. Very nice staff and service. We visited this restaurant twice in our short 5 day trip to NY, and we don’t often visit the same restaurant twice knowing there are so many good options here in the city.
Plethora of interesting plant based options to choose from especially for people who are looking for vegetarian alternatives to meat. They serve warm tea upon getting situated. We ordered spring rolls, hot and sour soup, wonton soup, fried chicken in appetizers and stuffed tofu, pepper and eggplant for main entree. Although the food tasted good I felt like it missed the strong element of Asian flavors. Some of the sauces felt mild. The portions for entree are huge and overall the place is decently priced.
This was absolutely the best vegan Chinese food Ive had. They offered lots of dishes that are difficult to find vegan, made with mock meats. All of the options were very similar in taste to the meat dishes, just the texture of the mock meats are the main difference. They had creative ways of making dishes meat-free. All of us, meat eaters and vegans alike, loved the food. Im excited to return for dimsum in the future. The food is also really reasonably priced, in $12-15 range for large sharable plates.Would recommend everything we got - beef chow fun, three cup chicken, dimsum sampler, Fujian fried rice.
The food at Buddha Bodai is outstanding. Almost all of the dishes -- especially the dim sum -- we ordered were exquisite. Im leaving a two-star review because the service was atrocious. The wait staff as well as the host couldnt answer simple questions about the food -- and the answers we did get were unnecessarily curt and unhelpful. Like I said above, the food was great -- but the service lacks much. Good luck trying to figure out what youre ordering, and prepare yourself for categorical confusion.
We came here because of the good ratings but was very disappointed. They forgot half of the things (our drinks and sides). The panfried dumplings and the wonton soup were more like only dough. Service was barely speaking English. We were forced to give a higher tip than we wanted which was a real shocker
Very slow serviceMade us wait for food, served the main course. We were halfway done when the appetizers appeared.Tables too small and quite close to each other, feel like I am here for a double date. The food was average and now I am waiting for the Check for the last fifteen minutes but to no avail
Great vegan food! I was disappointed in the lack of service and attention to the table. What’s more is that the menu is long, with no suggestions as to specials or must try dishes. The food was decent (try the pan-fried dumplings and the sesame chick’in!) I wouldn’t recommend the lo mein.
Still open!! We picked food up for our roommates birthday dinner yesterday and it was the best! Take out and limited outdoor seating! This is the best vegan/vegetarian Chinese food In the ENTIRE manhattan area. If you don’t know what to do, order fried taro balls, bbq beef (a must) and chicken lo mein. But you could probably blindfold yourself and still pick An amazing meal.

2022-01-21It was my first time eating vegetarian Asian food and I was really impressed with the quality. I got the Buddha Bean Curd Roll (the outer wrapping had a bite to it, similar to cabbage rolls) and the BBQ Vegetarian Meat Bun. The rolls had a nice savory and slightly sweet sauce, and the buns were very soft with a very sweet savory filling (some flavors in it of black sesame paste). The prices are quite logical too!

2022-08-02Great imitation meat! The sesame chicken was delicious as were the dim sum appetizers. Would recommend staying away from the vegetable options (mapo tofu was a little bland and I would have replaced eggplants with an imitation meat option)

2022-07-12We stopped in to eat while visiting the area. Its a nice restaurant, we had good service, and I loved the food. Delicious! We had spring rolls, vegetarian orange beef, and vegetarian pineapple chicken fried rice. Yum!

2021-12-31We always purchase cha-siu from this store when we are in Chinatown. Yesterday it was our first time to have sit down meal from there. The place is clean, and the service is good. They offered set lunch with very reasonable prices (Mon-Fri). We had Chicken noodles & General Tao, both are delicious. Their dim sims are tadte good too. It is worth to give it a try.

2022-06-03Possibly my favorite vegan-friendly eatery in NYC. I’m a dimsum kinda guy, and they’ve got everything. All the dimsum to satisfy your dimsum needs. They also have a lunch menu where you can order hot food, and it comes with your choice of rice and soup. But I would recommend sticking with just dimsum bexause you’re here for dimsum!! Not saying their lunch menu is bad, it was actually very enjoyable. The menu can be a little frightening so plan ahead.

2022-06-18We had the sesame chicken (AMAZING), wonton soup (broth wasn’t good but the wontons were) and the veggie dumplings. Food was great, but the service not so much. We waited 20 min after seated and had to flag down someone for water which then he forgot about and had to continue to ask. We’d go back for the food, but the customer service needs major improvement.

2022-03-16Having a vegan boyfriend limites my lifestyle. This place is AMAZING. Portions are big so you can share. I recommend getting the fake meats rather than the tofu!!. Loved the orange chicken and the fried rice. Dumplings are delicious.

2022-04-09I usually dont write any comments, but this place was so good that I had to share this with you. Walked around Brooklyn bridge and stumbled into this restaurant because of the good rating - and it was a delicious dinner. It was so good that we went there again for lunch. So if you near Brooklyn bridge for sightseeing etc. go there - I eat meat and totally recommend this place!

2022-01-26We came for lunch after reading the reviews. Overall, clean restaurant, easy location, good food. However there is room for improvement on Dim sum menu, for example; If you order a coconut rice ball, it is filled with peanuts.

2021-12-31I love this place. Have been twice this week. Everything is so cheap and the portions so big. Two people could eat with one menu for $8.5I recommend chicken curry if you like spicy. And the buns. All this was $17. In love!
