The Pepper in other cities:
The margaritas are always 5/5 and the main reason I come here to eat. The food, not so much. I live in the area now but where Im originally from the food is prepared more traditionally. The chimichanga is basically a burrito and not fried tortillas with chicken and cheese. The tacos are okay but not the best. And why is the guacamole served on a plate with lettuce? I also dont understand why they serve kidney beans as a side and not refried beans like most Mexican restaurants. The beans are gross and messy. Unless you put sour cream in them they wont taste very good. The rice is usually hit or miss with flavor and how much its cooked. I really do enjoy the margaritas and despite the other reviews raving about how this place is the best Mexican food in town, most people I know who live locally also agree the food is not that good. If you live in or closer to NYC the food wont be what you expect.
Went there tonight 3/18. Sat at the bar which wasnt busy and we were promptly ignored for 20 mins. Hostess did bring us nachos but the bartender never even looked over or acknowledged us. Its ashame because weve always enjoyed the food. So we ate our free nachos and left, no one even noticed us walking out. 2nd bad service so probably wont be back.
If I could rate this zero stars I would.... your better off eating taco bell(americanize mexican)...I love real Mexican food. idk what the pepper is trying to pull off.there margeritia are good. but there food is down right gross. on top of that there service sucks. they were busy when we went in which I understand a little wait. but there was 3 waters for maybe 15 tables. 4 water if you count the bartender. the main my the time they sat us. 4 other groups showed up who were sat immediately after us. but all for of those tables recieve the table chips and salsa and there drinks before any waitress even came over to take a drink order mean while the waitress are standing around chating with each other. bar guest etc... the food...rices is not Spanish rice. it basicly ragu in rice what is under cooked. there taco shell. which is there signature plate. were basicly store bought taco shells. there soft taco were stall.. there table chip were covered with Chilli powder...there was cabbage in my pork tacos. snd the beef taco just tasted like they dumped liquid smoke on low grade beef. to top it off. there wasnt even all the ingredients in the taco as stated on the menu... serious save your money
So very disappointing , 45 minutes for water , ordered drinks and never got them until halfway through our meal .never will go back . Cold food to boot . 18 percent grauitity mandatory for table of 8. No one was happy with any of it . Highly don’t recommend it to anyone.
When we arrived there were only 2 other tables being served and it still took our server more than 20 minutes before she even took our drink order and gave us menus. The service was slow and the rice was undercooked and dry. It would have been good if cooked properly. I was disappointed that the taco shells werent freshly made but were premade from a box. The guacamole was fresh and I did enjoy the the pickled red cabbage that came with it. When it came to receiving the check it was another long wait. In spite of everything our entrees did have good flavor. I would probably go back and try something else
Horrible, bland, expensive beef nachos. The only thing on them that has flavor are the jalapenos 😡. They give you about three pound of them but with no flavor, who wants them?? Not even served with salsa. Their shredded beef has no flavor. Plenty of black beans, if you like those🙄🙄 $18.36 for food I wont eat🤮🤮only good thing they have are margaritas, which are also expensive
Oh mama! I really love The Pepper, have only been once, but you will find delightful food, for a very decent price. Their margaritas are delicious and made properly: with two alcohols including one tequila.Good vegetarian options! If you find yourself in this nice part of Plattsburgh, I really recommend The Pepper!
Was an amazing way to finish our night exploring the city. Was great food and amazing drinks not too loud amd could hold a conversation. Got there early before the dinner rush but could see why it gets so busy some of if not the best mexican food we have had eating out. The drinks were cheap and strong but yet still tasted amazing. Over all a great experience thank you and will see you on our next trip back.
The food was decent, the service was a bit lacking this time around... A 25 minute wait for a simple appetizer, which is normally served pretty quickly 🤷🏻♂️. Waited for check for about 20 more minutes, and had tried signalling the wait staff, without trying to be rude about it. Maybe they were having an off day... This place is normally pretty good though, which gives it the 4 stars, instead of something very different.
Food was amazing, it was busy. Outdoor seating was good. They ran out of chicken AFTER I ordered tacos, after we received appetizer. They said it was shredded prok infact it was like cubed and fatty. Sent them back and they didnt even take it off the bill. Service is bad but the servers are trying hard and being sol with bad luck it seems.
Unfortunately due to staff changeover because of poor ownership many of the familiar faces we have come to know and love are no longer with the business .....you cant put small minded people in charge of a business and expect to succeed.... you treat everyone as expendable and eventually you will have no one left to work.... the walkers are truly some of the worst owners and people you will find in Plattsburgh.....
I went here on a Saturday night and was very pleased with the staff, drinks, and food! I had a wonderful time out and about. The staff was cordial and on top of our drinks. We got some loaded nachos that were amazing!! Then I ordered a burrito to take home and when I went to open take away box the next day I was blown away at how beautiful the burrito was!! It was gorgeously nestled between a dab of bright green guacamole and on the other side was this delicious bright pink and purple salad. It looked like a butterfly with tiny wings! Love this restaurant! Drinks were out of this world as well! Definitely try the margaritas! You wont be disappointed!
Picked up takeout. The food was ok, our problem was the margaritas. We ordered a gallon of house for over $100 and we got orange juice with some tequila. Im not sure if they lost their bartender but these were BAD. If youre going to order drinks dont do it for takeout.
Excellent food and service. Young crowd. Food fresh, healthy and large portions.Tends towards spicy, nothing extra sour cream couldnt help with which they generously gave. Carnitas not spicy and fantastic. Tortilla soup in an enormous cup (a bowl would be a meal) more like stew, very spicy. Great Rolls Royce Margherita with Grand Marnier and more. Prices very reasonable. We ended up here looking for a nice dinner near the Thruway about 9:45 Saturday night. Those restaurants and much of the rest of Plattsburgh seemed to roll up at 10. Lucky for us we landed here!
Always amazing food, very pleasant staff. Weve been coming to Lake Champlain every year for the past 5-6 years, and weve never been disappointed. With the adaptations made necessary by covid, the inside tables were spaced far enough and outside seating was available. Nice touch to have little squirt bottles of hand sanitizer on every table, as well as a giant bottle inside the front door. Salsa/chips and our meals delicious as always. First night had the seafood enchiladas, so good I had them again another night of our trip. We will be back again next year... already looking forward to the margaritas!
Lunch on a Saturday, had to keep changing our order because they seemed to be out of everything, out of shrimp, no guacamole, etc. We order finally, whoops no corn tortillas. Maybe nice to know this stuff sitting down, instead of after we order drinks and are committed.Would be a 1 star review but when we finally got our food situated, it did end up being really good. Margaritas were quite good also.
Everything was great about this place. You have to go a little off the beaten path, but it is well worth it. The salsa was very fresh, with lots of fresh cilantro. We ordered the guacamole appetizer and it was just made and there was a lot of it. We also ordered entrees and had enough take homes for another meal and a half!!!
Excellent Mexicsn Cuisine. The Margaritas are awesome. The micro brew beers choice is quite varied and plentiful. Beer is very good. Food portions are easily shared an one will surely be satisfied. Definitely will return. Outside seating for the summer months is quite refreshing.
My favorite place for margaritas! This business has been a local staple for years and for good reason. Delicious food and unique fare for the area. Great downtown location with seasonal outdoor seating. Homemade chips and salsa make for a great snack with drinks or a start to a meal. My favorite margarita is the Rolls Royce made with premium ingredients. They also have tasty flavored margaritas like mango, pomegranate, and even lavender. All margaritas are made with their own house sour mix, so good, and a detail that their competitors skip over. You cant go wrong with any of the menu items... play it safe with familiar chimichangas or go for something more bold, you wont regret your choice either way.
Went here on a Monday which I can only assume is margarita Monday. There were 2 other patrons at the bar and 1 server. It took about 10 minutes to get our drink order which was absurd since we only wanted a water and soda. We ordered food when the server finally took our drink order. Fast forward 1 whole hour, no one has refilled our drinks, no one has had said anything about our food, no one has even come back to check on us in a small restaurant. I haven’t walked out of many restaurants but the pepper was one of those restaurants. If alcohol is your focus maybe the pepper might be semi-decent but if you want real Mexican food go to Lomeli’s
My wife and I had a great late night dinner here. The food was amazing. The margaritas were fantastic. The price was right and the atmosphere was inviting and festive, but not overwhelming. Our server, Brooke with a W, was amazing. She was friendly and personable, yet very fast and efficient. The hostess, the owners mother we found out, was friendly and funny and very attentive. (She reminded us a bit of Betty White.) We could not recommend this place enough. Were glad I got a craving for mexican food. Cant wait to return to Plattsburgh so we can go again.
I was turned away at about 5:15 for a take out said they dont do them a dinner time as they are to busy but yet I just saw a couple do itI would hate to think it was because Im an amputee and did not want my electric chair in front of the building while all the nice two legged people ate curbside.but I will pass on this information to any one who will listen.
Burned, burned, burned! I’ve come three times, different times BURNED EVERY TIME! Why?? 18 for an enchilada with chicken, so burnt had to scrap it off plate! The girl handed it to me saying sorry little over done! I would not have served it that way. Margarita was good though.
My wife and I eat here about 1-2 times per week. We love the food on the menu, but the specials never disappoint, either. Lots of local products are used when available, and the Pepper has the best margaritas north of the Mason Dixon Line. That is not an exaggeration. Go see for yourself!
We waited 30 minutes before getting water. Another 20 minutes before getting our margarita (not bad). Food arrived over an hour after we sat down. Waitress was dressed sloppily and was not able to answer basic questions about ingredients used in the dishes. We asked if they were understaffed that night and she responded no. The only reason we give 2 stars is for the margaritas.
Great place to go for quality Mexican food and cerveza. The portions are large and tasty. I get the Oaxacan dish but if Im feeling really hungry I get the Border burrito. The drinks here are also great. They excel at margaritas. The bartender Glen is friendly and knowledgeable. You might have to wait for seating because it is a small place but it is worth it!
The Pepper is always somewhere to return to in Plattsburgh. The best authentic Mexican food I have ever and probably will ever have. I anticipate every visit with anxiety and excitement. Theres no shame in re ordering the same dish everytime here. Addictively good and well worth every penny. Conserve water, drink margaritas.Edit: The wait staff is very forgiving to clumsy guests.
I have been here so many times and like most Mexican places, the food is always just ok and nothing memorable. With that said, I dont eat meat so Im not the best judge. I have to say they have the BEST margarita Ive ever had and they are strong! The ambiance is nice, but the food always took a long time to come out. Its one of my favorites around and thats mostly for the margs.
The margaritas were very good. That was the end of our plesent experience. We waited too long for our food, over an hour. When it finally came out, there were a number of errors. I will give them credit because they took care of the food on our bill. Approach with caution.
Food fantastic. Quantity of food great. Staff was good. The place needed to be cleaned a little better. There was dried crusty food on the table and on the menues. A little TLC and they would have my 5 star. No Guinness on tap, Suggested a local oatmeal stout for an alternative. It was awesome...... Great job to the Prepper. I will be there again and again and again... I think you all get the hint.
Worst meal EVER! Seafood enchiladas had NO seafood in them. ALL you could taste was a TON of cheese. NO chilli NOR guacamole. You had to ask for your cream. Ive eaten at authentic Mexican and Tex-Mex but this place ISNT close. Homemade salsa was the only good thing BUT chips tasted store bought with some seasoning on them. They ruined a Rolls Royce Margarita that had high end liquor with terrible house mix. NOT coming back!
The service here is not good. The waitress served us warm water with no ice or straws and that was just to start. After waiting five minutes I literally had to go ask for them and then she put a pitcher of ice on the table and said we could just pour it into the drinks ourselves. The food wasnt great either. The saving grace I guess were the drinks. Pretty heavy on the alcohol but I guess since its a college town thats the main attraction anyhow. Wouldnt recommend unless your out just to drink. Probably more of a local hangout for the SUNY Plattsburgh students and staff but still well below my humble standards of service.
We visited after a flight in Plattsburg (on a Wednesday evening). We are pleased to be seated without a wait. However, it was another 10 minutes before we saw another server for drink orders or appetizers. Dinner with a toddler is always challenging when the server is not responsive. The food was top notch and I enjoyed the decor.
I was passing through on my way downstate, and after a couple hours detained at the border, I was desperate for a good meal. Luckily Plattsburgh is right there and in Plattsburgh is The Pepper: a great restaurant and one that Im glad I found. It had a real local feel and was in a very nice neighborhood. The food was really delicious and the service was quick and very good. Portions were big, but Im not complaining, just take some leftovers home! If youre headed up or down I-87, The Pepper is totally worth taking a detour to hit up for a bite.
A group of friends and I were there today. I was disappointed that this establishment was out of a lot of items, even fried ice cream. I was told by the waitress that it was due to college students departing the previous weekend but this is a yearly thing to happen so I was slightly confused.
Before tonight I would rated 5 star, great bar staff, but if your not there to eat dont bother to stop in for a great margaritas, such a shame. A party of ten was asked to give up tables with drinks was asked to leave so a new party showed up to eat could have our tables by a owner. Very un perfessional being in a service myself.......
Should we start with the culturally insensitive decor or the absolutely foul food? Hanging piñatas in a Mexican restaurant? Really?I ordered a margarita, my girlfriend got water. Her water tasted metallic, and the cheap tequila that overwhelmed my drink literally caused me stomach pain, where I was given directions to a dirty bathroom with a clogged toilet. It didn’t get better even when stirred, and clearly did not even have all of the listed ingredients (for reference, this was the cadillac margarita). We both got the taco plate. Twenty minutes after we ordered in a nearly entirely empty restaurant, which seems to only employ blonde women as servers, our lukewarm food finally arrived. After one bite, it was evident that these tacos were not fit for human consumption. The beef was watery somehow, and all the ingredients clearly had been frozen for some time. The hard shell taco was moist by the time it reached the table. The soft shell was crispy, and not properly wrapped. The entire plate was unseasoned, bland, and wet. I wish that was a joke. The rice was the best thing, and that was only by default. We had to rush out of the restauarant, and neither of us could stomach more than one bite of taco. All of this for $30.
To me coming from the west coast where hispanic culture and food is everywhere, this is not mexican food. It could be considered Tex-mex which is a very Americanized version of mexican food. But still Im not sure I would label it as that either.Despite the fact that the service was amazing, the Cantina style restaurant was very clean and the food looked fantastic. However, the rice was not Spanish rice. It tasted like southern rice you would find in Louisiana. But, it was absolutely delicious and, was the only tasty thing on my plate.I ordered the fish tacos. First, they were served on flour tortillas instead of corn (not mexican). Second they probably used some sort of surface fish from a lake, I could tell because of the extremely iron taste that overwelmed all other flavors that were added to the taco. This taco tasted a lot like potting soil. The fish taco traditionally is not a dish that comes from the heart and soul of southern North America (Mexico City). Instead it stems from the California/ Mexican border area called Baha. And being on the coast of the Pacific ocean a fish taco is served with Flounder, Grouper, Cod, or Seabass. These fish when cooked right are delicous, less iron tasting, chunky and flakey... Ideal for a taco. There was also red cabbage and guacamole in the taco, two more things that arent in the Mexican repertoire. Instead, lettuce and fruit is usually served with this dish like guava, mango or pinapple to balance out the fish taste and finally topped with onions and green chilles which also were missing from this dish. The beans that were served with the rice were not bad but were unseasonned and tasting as if they came out of a can.The chips and salsa that came with the table were tasty but again not what I would find at a Southwest Mexican restaurant. The chips didnt look or taste as if they were cooked in-house and had little salt on them. The salsa was not freshly made salsa. Instead it was picante sauce that you would normally buy jarred from a grocery store. Many of you may think Im being pretty harsh on this dish but for the high price I paid for this simple and horrible dish which was comparable to the price of a juicy steak, I think my honest opinion is warranted.I wouldnt judge the entire Experience of The Pepper from one dish. Im sure they probably have some delicious food in their menu but, Im pretty sure it would be safe to assume that none of it would fill my mouth with the delectable and savory flavors of traditional Mexican food. Because, I sampled the Turkey enchiladas and some other Turkey filled dish that my friends ordered, they were way better tasting than my dish however, tasted nothing like traditional Mexican food... turkey???Next time I feel the urge for Mexican food I will go down Oak street in Plattsburgh or to Burlington VT. The next time I visit The Pepper, if there is a next time I will not bring my hispanic tongue, nor will I order the fish taco.
It is a smaller restuarant so if your trying to go there any night around 7 you can expect to wait. I think it is worth the wait because they have execellent drink specials, different margaritas every night. The service is friendly. I had the Chile Rellenos Fundido and my boyfriend had the Chimichanga. Both dishes had great flavor that would be very difficult to duplicate at home.

2022-06-15First time dining here. The menu was very unique all truly authentic recipes. This gave me an opportunity to try some things I have never tried before. The portion sizes were good and the food was very tasty love the optional outdoor seating so it took the liberty of eating outside as it was a gorgeous afternoon. The wait staff was very kind and I look forward to enjoying another meal there and try something new (to me) again!

2021-09-18My husband and I dont get to Plattsburgh as often as we would like, but when we do, The Pepper is a top choice for us. Great atmosphere and staff. The food, of course, is the best part. And the margaritas arent bad either. Portion size is larger than you would expect. I had fish tacos and had never seen them so big. We cant wait to go back!

2022-06-19I finally got a chance to stop by The Pepper during my most recent visit to Plattsburgh after hearing so many great things. And, this is why my rating is 3 stars as opposed to the 1 star experience I personally had. I believe it was just an off day. Rumor was that two kitchen staffers quit and they were down a bartender, so the owners were in the kitchen and a volunteer from the firehouse was bartending. So unfortunately, the following unfolded: The kitchen was backed up so everyones food was delayed. They were out of calamari... no heads up from the server. Our drinks were late... seemed to be the case with neighboring tables. My dates order was wrong and the preparation of the vegetarian burrito they did bring was not appealing. It was supposed to be pork. And the worst part was when we notified the server about the order, she seemed confused. Placing the order again would cause more delay it seemed and she didnt even offer to take the order off the check. The food was not eaten. Being that my date grew up in this town, they still paid for the food just to be supportive. It was all very disappointing and even with a change in staff, the servers couldve taken care of the customers a bit better. Never charge someone for food they did not order or that you got mixed up. That should immediately be refunded and or given a comp in some way. Hospitality 101. The chips and salsa was delicious. And Im sure the owners were not aware of some of these additional turn of events so I hope they have recovered. Ill check it out again when I return for a second chance since Ive always heard great things.

2022-02-28Ok, whoever told me this place was good must have been drunk. I ordered the chicken fajitas (1st pic), fire (2nd pic), and raspberry cheesecake chimichangas (3rd pic). Everything was burned or over cooked. No flavor and presentation awful. I’m so disappointed. I had to go across the street and get McDonald’s. My puppy dog wouldn’t even eat it. She only ate the sour cream.

2021-10-07This place is 5 star for sure! If you are passing through Plattsburgh then you should definitely check them out! We went for “the best margarita” in town and got the best fresh Mexican food! From the first bite of their homemade Salsa I knew everything would be great and gril was I right! I highly recommend the chicken and asparagus enchiladas and my handsome boyfriend loved the chorizo and shrimp quesadilla! But I’m sure everything on the menu will be perfectly splendid!

2022-07-02Service was awesome food not so much drinks where good and stiff but the food was on the bland side. I know we are in the north country but some seasonings go a long way used a 1/3 bottle of hot sauce. Did I mention the drinks they where really good.
