Oh my… is it really necessary to be that impatient on phone? really? Who’s gonna call an emergency vet if everything is fine?! I know this is just your job to pick up calls and you probably hear thousands worse cases every day so my dog counts nothing to you. But please remember your job is different because this job requires empathy, patience and knowledge, not only a chart of price remembered in your brain. If your organization hires some third party to handle calls, you should think about a change.
Schwarzman Animal Medical Center is absolutely GREAT at processing credit card payments. In fact, veterinary medicine seems to be largely incidental to their primary business of processing credit card payments. *Hypothetically they could have the best veterinarians in the country - but I would have no way of knowing this, as I did not actually see the vet (ostensibly) treating my pet this weekend (presumably there is a surcharge to be in the physical presence of the vet). Ive left three (3) messages by email and telephone for very brief follow-up information after my visit (as instructed) - I have not heard a word from Schwarzman Animal Medical Center. I can look forward to paying another vet to do the work and provide the follow-up information I have already paid Schwarzman for.If you enjoy that sinking feeling of What did I just pay for!? - THIS is the place for you.
My 14 year old had a rare form of cancer. I could not have been happier with every doctor, vet tech, and person we came in contact with. They were knowledgeable, compassionate, and returned calls promptly. They provided us with an array of treatment options. Their Oncology team led by Dr. Lieberman were amazing. She went into a remission, and we had her for another year. I will always be grateful for the care and compassion during a very difficult time.
The neurology department and Dr. West are amazing and responsive. My dog has been a patient for 5 years and suffers seizures due to hydrocephalus. They always respond to my questions with patience. It makes me sad there are so many negative reviews of the hospital. Having a sick pet is an emotional event and can often cost a lot of money. Most of the negative reviews seem to reference cost but I have always felt the hospital to be very fair with their prices. Animal surgery is expensive. Please get pet insurance if you have a pet. I highly recommend this place to everyone!
I have spent more money at animal medical center than my last home purchase. Seriously this is not an exaggeration. And while they used to be the gold standard in care and worth the money for my precious family members the abuse you suffer simply by going there is just not worth it.I recently waited 2 and half hours beyond my appointment time, which I was reminded to be prompt for at least 3 times. I’m Ill and have impaired breathing. When I asked how much longer so I could determine if I had time to go outside and get some air I was met with hostility and lecturing.I have been literally screamed at by one of the doctors and reduced to tears for no reason. They have gone out of their way to make my dogs allergy medication as complicated as possible while admitting it can be simplified. Apparently they are amused by the fact that my dog bites me.They let my cat sit in her bag with no food or water for 2and a half hours on the hot second floor without concern. There are signs all over the hospital warning you not to abuse the staff. No other business needs these, they do because they must train the staff to treat the clients as the enemy. They don’t deserve the money they charge and you leave feeling like you’ve been through a traumatic event even if it’s a regular appointment.RESPONSE TO THE OWNER. I DID THAT I AM STILL WAITING TO HEAR BACK. THAT WAS A MONTH AGO.
AMC has saved my cats life not once, but twice over the past year. Their doctors and staff have been caring, empathetic and professional each time and I fully trust in their expertise. It is extremely traumatic having to deal with an acutely sick pet and Ive found that they have always taken the time to answer my questions patiently and compassionately. I am very appreciative of the entire team. Thank you!
Professional , experienced, and compassionate doctors. I got the horrible news about my 10 month old puppy but besides a few hour wait (understandable at an emergency center) and a heavy bill they did everything right. Also, get pet insurance. You never know what might happen and you want to be the best advocate for your pet and not have the price hold you back for their care. Everywhere is expensive regardless.
I don’t even know where to start. THIS IS THE WORST VET HOSPITAL EVER IN THE UNITED STATES. VERY MONEY HUNGRY!!!! THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOUR PET !!! THEY WILL LET YOUR PET DIE!!! They do not have no sympathy towards your pet they just want your money. Every bill you get is 3000$+. they receive free donations that they don’t want you to even apply for. They will let your pet die unless you pay their ridiculous bill. Please listen to the reviews and do not take your pet here!!! They also called me saying my dog Remy had Respiratory issues ( fluid in her lungs) when she never had that and immediately offered to cover the 5000 bill to treat it. Which was super suspicious. Seems like they made a mistake and were trying to cover it up. Now my dog is dieing and they hit us with another 5000 bill for only 1 day of hospitalization. And said if we don’t pay to take her somewhere else. Please just go to the ASPCA OR Humane Society. These people DO NOT CARE about YOUR PET!!!!!!!! THEY ONLY CARE ABOUT MONEY!!!! THIS IS A RICH PERSONS VET!! LISTEN TO THE REVIEWS !!!
The best vets! All the stars for this animal hospital. I took my umbrella cockatoo there today with an eye issue. Dr. Moore treated him and performed eye surgery and fixed the issue. The whole team there is fantastic. I have also been here with my dog when he broke his leg. I highly recommend AMC!
Reviews are very bipolar in the world of vets but AMC deserves a 5 star. Most primary vets gets high reviews because they don’t take care the sicker animals. If your pet has a true emergency, the primary care vets are often not available.AMC has very professional staff and runs an organized business. You will be get clear directions by staff when stepping your foot to the building. The doctors are knowledgeable and easy to communicate via phone calls and emails. They also have more advanced equipments according to one of the urgent care vet I met. The information thought out treatment was transparent and detailed.Sadly it took me two surgeries on my cat with another vet to find the right place to go. AMC gave me the confidence after a very difficult time for me and my cat. I’m thankful for their work.
I had to wait months to get the results of my bunny’s CT scan even after calling multiple times. The vet finally emailed me stating that results were normal. My bunny’s regular vet requested the CT images because he was still sick. Once again I kept getting dismissed and so did my vet. After a year of my bunny being sick it turns out he has an inner ear infection which has progressed to other issues. I don’t understand what is so difficult about sending over the images and actually telling me the truth about the results. I’m beyond angry. I had to pay $1000 for the visit/CT scan. The inner ear infection could of been easily fixed.
I’ve came here with my dog twice on 2 separate occasions they never fail to help out, my most recent encounter was last night. Silvana the amazing lady at the front was so sweet and caring from the moment I called she was very polite and you can see that she cared, she helped me out the whole time was nothing short of amazing I even just called and by my voice she already knew who I was and remembered my pets name she is amazing. Thank you guys so much for always helping
Let me start off by saying AMAZING DOCTORS!. They are patient and very informative, but I wish I could say the same about the front desk associates. No sense of urgency nor compassion over your situation. And today they proved just that. I was refused service for my scheduled appointment which I was on time btw and all because I didnt want to wear their disposal masks that they had in open air and touched with their Bare handsOh and did I mentioned I was already wearing a mask!!!So sick that im here for the well-being of my dog after paying a lot of money but im refused service over a MASK when im already wearing my on!
I took my dog whom was 14 years old, and could no longer walk, or pick up her head to be put down. Once i came in they put me in a room where i was able to lay my dog on the table, within a few minutes someone came to take Lilly and put a catheter in her arm. They reassured us we could stay as long as we want to say our goodbye. We stood there for about 2 hours because we were not ready, we did not feel rushed at all. When we eventually asked for the doctor to come in she explained to us what was going to happen and what to expect. We were able to get a clay with her paw impression.
This office charges twice the price of any vet in nyc and gives half the customer service (for pets and people alike). The vets give misinformation and contradict each other’s advice. I was misfortunate enough to need them for emergency services, they played on my emotions and scared me into surgery to save my pet’s life when there were mutiple alternatives that were never discussed. After they treated my pet, they offered no follow up service other than a print out of instructions. You will never get to be in the back with your pet or even meet the doctor. They will stay in the back and will call your phone while you sit in their waiting room. Then by phone they will offer their suggestions and not give you any quote to sign and approve prior to them administering care to your pet. The whole process is impersonal and confusing. I regret trusting this office with the care of my fur baby. Find any other vet if you want to feel taken care of.
This is the worlds largest non-profit animal hospital. Its very busy, so I recommend coming here for a specific reason. When running diagnostics on your pet, theyre going to test for everything. I say this so that people are aware of potential costs, I also advise asking about prices before proceeding. We had a local vet but when our dog was diagnosed with a rare tumor we were advised to see a specialist. I spoke with numerous vets relating to my dogs health issue and everyone reverted me to AMC in New York, specifically Dr. Doug Palma. We wanted to find the best care possible for our beloved dog Pork Chop and we received it thanks to Dr. Palma. Were eternally grateful for his time, expertise, and compassion.
AMC is amazing. When my cat went into renal failure, I first brought him to Blue Pearl which charged me $8k to tell me there was no blockage. They were so unhelpful and treated me as a huge inconvenience to see my boy while they held him for several days.I brought my baby to AMC and they were immediately able to tell me he had a blockage and perform surgery same day. I went to visit him daily and they were so kind and helpful. They also didnt keep him a day longer than they needed to, sending him home as soon as he was stable. (In contrast, Blue Pearl kept my cat for days for observation while he continued to get worse and the bill high, and they made me feel like I was killing him by taking him home, even though they werent doing anything for him.)The wait times can be long and prices high, but thats because this is a large hospital in NYC - they get a lot of pets and they have the diagnostic equipment smaller places dont have. If you go here, you know youll get answers (instead of paying thousands to get no answer).Get insurance, good ones will cover up to 90% of all services. AMC is my forever first stop for emergencies. They also work so well with my primary vet (who comes to my apt) to minimize stressing my cat out with frequent trips to AMC.
I found AMC Dermatology extremely disappointing. My dog suffers from allergies and will itch herself to the point where she hurts herself. We worked with AMC for about 9 months. In short, they charge you thousands to spend very little time with patient and owner. They hurry and overmedicate and dont collaborate with those in their care.Every visit entailed having us wait for hours (up to two) past the appointment time and speaking with the doctor for maybe 5 minutes tops. They dont think twice about putting your pet on serious medications, many with dangerous side effects they wont discuss with you. The doctor tried to put my dog on over a dozen pills a day, many of which were once used on humans with psychotic disorders but are no longer due to withdrawal and side effects. When I asked about this I was basically ignored. Never filled the Rx.On top of that, Im sure they have a kick-back deal with the pharmacies they direct you to. I found meds for much less money online, but had to contact AMC 4 to 5 times to get an approval. We are working with a new doctor in the city and I am so happy that I dropped AMC. Were getting the care and results my sick pet needs.
I was there with a shelter cat for surgery and a vet explained everything to me. He doesnt have to because I was just transporting this cat as a volunteer and later he needed explain everything again to the shelter manager. Everything was clear and I can tell that this vet is great doctor. The cat was half stray but he knows how to handle him. The clinic is very clean, and the staff are very friendly, they answer all my questions
I am so grateful for the Neurology Department at AMC . I have a beautiful dog with severe epilepsy . He has been suffering twice a week for months . Since we started with Dr Damico and colleagues we have gotten him to 4 weeks seizure free . The care that is given at this hospital is something so special . Every pet owner should know about Thai place so their animals are treated the way my sweet Barkley is . . Thank you again for the continued support and constant feedback I receive from AMC
I recently went to AMC with my pet in traumatic distress relating to his CHF. I was absolutely blown away by the compassion and level of care we were shown in the early morning hours of Saturday morning. This is a wonderful organization providing and invaluable service to NYC pets and the families. I’ll be forever grateful for everything they did for my Murphy.
I thought this would be the best place to take our canary when she was experiencing an egg binding problem. Unfortunately, well never know for sure what happened behind those closed doors. What I can say is that after sharing the news with my daughter, we wanted to see our canary again. Well, before even bringing our canary to us, a nurse or vet in training, came to ask me in front of my 8 year old how do you want to dispose of the body.I couldnt believe my ears - not at all what I expected from this place. So I told him, I asked to see our bird , can we have her back. Super insensitive!!I dont ever want to step foot in that place again!
This is going to be a long review. Back in March of 2020, was the first experience with AMC. My rabbit Chanel was acting strange and i decided to take her to their emergency room at around 10pm. They did not charge me since they only did triage and gave me advice on what to do with her at home. They were super attentive and prompted me to bring her back when the exotics team were in the next day. Just like many others during this pandemic money was a big issue. Some would say AMC is pricey and they can be, but i can assure you they provide your pet with THE BEST CARE. Chanel had a million and one things wrong with her!! Luckily she had a good prognosis. She received a bunch of tests, CT scans, radiographs, Bloodwork etc since she was dyspneic. Dr Latney is AMAZING. Heaven sent doctor. She was so thorough in explaining everything that she found wrong with Chanel. She gave me a treatment plan that worked best with what i could afford and what was more beneficial for Chanel. I was freaking out about this all and she was super comforting over the phone. Chanel got a dental procedure done since she had a tooth root abscess. Now once again, this year in March 2021 (hit it right on the nail Chanel!) she got another abscess in the same spot as the old one. I was back and forth to AMC pretty much every weekend with Chanel and im sure everyone knew her at this point and her pink round carrier 😂. I just want to thank AMC for all the help they provided me and Chanel. She is doing AMAZING now and i cannot ask for a better place to take her to! Everyone at AMC is absolutely amazing. From the greeters who take your temperature, to the front desk staff, and the doctors/techs, everyone is so kind hearted and attentive. You don’t understand how much I appreciate it all. I am in tears writing this because you guys are seriously the best. I don’t know what i would have done without AMC. Thank you SOOOO much for saving my baby. She went through a lot this past year but she was in great hands and will continue to be! 💕🐰
The sign on their wall says it all. I never saw a sign like that before. It tells me that This operation’s priority is their staff members’ satisfaction not how to treat the pet effectively. Here is my experience and fact:1. They are eager to make money and they care about their instagram account more Than their responsibilities. I sent my seriously sick pet to the operation based on a referral of another emergency care. Back in the prior emergency room, the cat has already did all exams and the only thing needed was ultra sound test. The first thing we were asked to sign is whether we’d like to have our pet’s pictures posted on their instagram account. Really, instagram is the first step of your paperwork? Then we were asked to pay basic exam fee ($250) again! Why? The basic exams are already completed!2. Repeat processes that wasted time and incompetent staff: I was asked to provide description of symptoms of my cat to the front desk, even tho the previous emergency care doctor has already sent it to the doctor here. Fine, I repeated myself. Next thing was nurse came to see me and my cat, she asked me the same thing again!!!! Why can’t they just communicate with each other? It’s completely waste of time! The nurse was inpatient and didn’t take the notes correctly. So I had to repeat multiple times with her.3. Threatened by the doctor: Oscar was sent inside for an hour, and I got a call from the doctor, saying how busy she was so Oscar had not yet being treated. I said noted, I understand. Then she said that I was nude to her staff and If I kept doing that, they will not treat my dying pet. Please note that I didn’t get to meet the doctor! How did she know whether or not I was rude to anyone????? She was just relying on her staff’s complaining and got triggered by her staff to threaten the customer? Not professional! And lack of sympathy to threaten me by saying they will not treat the dying pet!!!! Also she didn’t question her staff’s competency and honesty! Just wow.I always thought ppl work at vet are generally compassionate and with sense of responsibility and professionalism. Today I have to correct myself.
We brought in our Possum - a rescued cat- after 2 years going around different vets to solve polips he had, ..he was often throwin up and breathing with difficulties. I wish I came to this animal hospital straightaway. First of all the level of professionalism they have from the receptionists to nurses and doctors is outstanding, around Queens (where we live) I always found bad receptionists… superficial and not attentive. Here they have it all ! First the doctor explained to me perfectly what was going on and the procedure, they even suggested to hold on on the cat scan (very expensive) cos they could do the procedure anyway, and the cats can could have been done in a second time, if my cat would still have the same issues, after the procedure. They did that so I could save money. The surgery has been expensive, but…. I spent in all 3000$ (that is what the credit card is for… .. emergencies only….) ..money that I did spend in 2 years changing different vets trying to get those polips out of my cat nose and esophagus. So I did spent that same amount of money trying two years for nothing … all other vets told me without cat scan (Extra 1500$) they could not do anything…. So if I went to the AMC medical center first, I would have solved the issues in one time, and saving money at the end. … they did the surgery and god my cat is another cat! He put on weight, finally he plays a lot, he looks better, fur and all, he had energy I never saw he had before (Poor thing he couldn’t breathe and swallow properly for years ! I regret having taken 2 years to find them!)… and he is just great. I am so grateful for all the staff there to have given new better life to my rescue… don’t wait guys. Animals deserve care and to live good too. I wish I went there first thing. Great place to heal your pets.
This is the ABSOLUTE WORSE facility. The workers at the front desk are 100% incompetent without a shred of respect for patients. They do not adhere to appointments at all. My appointment was at 10:30 am and I did not leave until after 6pm because they took walk ins. I had to continually call them for updates because they refused to provide communication. They have no idea how to perform in a professional work place. I would like to give negative stars but unfortunately google does not provide that option. You will get better service and respect at PETCO. PETCO is more of Animal Medical Center. Also, they also do not tell you the expected price value on the bill beforehand. All in all, i do not recommend.
My cat was in labor had her first baby, that didn’t make it , which is why I brought her here didn’t inform me anything about when her second baby should be coming or in the fact that she isn’t pushing or having her second baby was an issue. 33 hours has gone by and she still wasn’t pushing for her second , I had to bring her to another animal hospital and had to have an emergency c section, she had dystocia. I’m so grateful for VETERINARY EMERGENCY GROUPs. There amazing and really care. Sometimes it’s not about the money. And this place I went to gave me poor service and poor advice. Please don’t take ur vet to this location.
Hi! I’ve read through a lot of these reviews and feel like I needed to say something. My Grandmother lived in the city, she would get my dad to bring the dog (which is now my families after my grandma died) here. They used AMC for years, even decades. They had a lovely experience every time, that being said: they have a lot of money. As an art student in the city with my ESA rabbit, I have enough money to make it by. The way they treated me was VERY different then my own dad/grandmothers experience. Just based off of money and the type of pet I had. Long story short, my ESA died less then 2 days after taking him to AMC. I was giving him the meds they told me to give him and he still passed. Please don’t call yourself an exotic vet!
Very racist staff .& they care about money more than animals! They misdiagnosed my dogs condition and refused to refund me for medicine I did not want in the first place ! & in addition to that had me pay extra money for testing just to never call me back or follow up with results. I’ve called and left messages still no responds. My dog could’ve died for all they care. Literally robbed me ! Never go here if you love your pet and if you don’t like wasting money ! THEY ARE THE WORST!
I’m so grateful this place is exists. I’ve been to the ER with my two senior cats multiple times and it’s just so good to know they are there 24/7. One of my cats has small cell lymphoma. Our regular vet recommended amc and dr Palma and I’m soooo glad she did. Dr Palma and his team have gotten him stable and he has lived with this for 3+ years! He has sadly had what appears to have been a stroke recently and I know he’s getting the best care with the neurology team. My other senior cat has adult onset ideopathic epilepsy and now stable due to dr cigarroa and the neurology team. I don’t know what I’d do without AMC… they provide the best care, are upfront about costs, and are super communicative.
A few weeks ago, I had to rush one of my cats (Tigger) to my local vet, who then sent us to a local pet ER. After Tigger was stabilized there, the ER vets said that he needed specialty care, and they recommended the Animal Medical Center (aka AMC). It was almost 2am when Tigger made it to AMC, and the staff were super considerate of my anxiety, and Tigger’s comfort. Tigger stayed there for 4 days, and during that time, I got regular morning and evening outreach from the vets who were caring for him. This included Drs Covo, Saunders, Courtney, Cutolo, and Langlois. (I hope I didn’t miss anyone!)The AMC team was very clear and thorough along the way, as they covered potential tests, outcomes, and estimated costs of the procedures (checking in with me for my input before moving forward at each step). When Tigger was able to come home, they also taught me what signs to look for in order to monitor him at home. Tigger is doing very well on the treatment that he is on for the next couple of months, and I really appreciate the care and effort that AMC provided to make his treatment successful. Thank you!
They killed my cat - I could not have had a worse experience at this place. No one cares this place is all about the money. They were not paying attention when my cat was sedated under anesthesia! The cat died on the table and I was told oh well you signed a paper that said you understood there were risks associated with surgery. They still expected me to pay the full 10K worth of bills and gave me a receipt with a cheerful message thanks for visiting the AMC. I am going to sue them for negligence. Save your money and your pet and DO NOT GO HERE! It is a total disaster. This place should be shut down.
Took good care of my dog but sent me home with an incomplete prescription for medication that my dog has to take for his medical condition. Now I have a prescription I cant use, and I would have to go back to the hospital to pick up a new one. Their customer service is mostly flippant and dismissive, save for one tech who was a literal godsend. I want to like this hospital more than I do, but man, this was such a careless mistake.Update: Welp, Dr. Chad West to decided to tell me I was rude because I said sending a patient home with an unusable prescription for a life-saving medication was careless mistake. Hes the head of neurology. So they lost another star. Avoid AMC if you can. There are a few hospitals nearby, and Blue Pearl is on the West Side.
I would like to share my experiences with the animal medical center in the hopes that someone monitors their reviews and can assist me further. My dog regularly attends their cardiology services which have been excellent. He was scheduled for a teeth cleaning today which was cancelled late last week by the animal medical center. This appointment has booked 5.5 months ago for the next available appointment. He requires cardiac clearance which also has a 6 month waitlist. Yet the next available dental appointment isnt until July - even though the animal dentist cancelled the last appointment with 4 days notice! Please help- he can’t wait 6 months for another appointment- his heart can’t handle it. Also be wear the AMC has no respect for your time or their previously scheduled appointments.
Have only been here once, i suddenly noticed my guinea pigs eye was white yesterday and was looking for emergency exotic vets. i’ve gone to a couple but none were ever 24 hrs and had exotic vets around the clock. i’m not sure if the doctor who took care of my guinea pig was an exotic specialist but they had enough knowledge to give a diagnosis & medication & offered coming to see their ophthalmologist on monday. the receptionists were very kind even though they had to deal with this rude couple. i didn’t speak to the one of the receptionists that was there yesterday but i could over hear them speaking to other customers & their attitude was nice & welcoming just like the other receptionist. if you were a receptionist or any of the doctors working may 14 2022 around 9pm, thank you all so much for your kindness and patience. the wait was relatively short and service was amazing. thank you for being open 24 hrs. will definitely be coming again for any other emergencies. and chiki my guinea pig is already looking better in her eye.
Our regular vet sent us here when our 16-year-old cat was refusing to eat and an x-ray showed fluid in her chest. Its always difficult to be in an emergency room and even more so in Covid times. The front desk was extremely efficient and kind. I wished I could have spoken to the ER doctor in person, and also to have had my partner come in with me (only one person allowed in per pet) but thats the price of a pandemic. They do have a cats-only section of the waiting room for people who want their pets to be away from the dogs--this is nice!Dr. Mastrocco treated my cat in the E.R. and she was then transferred to the cardiology department. Dr. Fox, Dr. Enderle, and Dr. Kharbush in cardiology were all amazing. I could tell they really cared and they gave me reasonable advice and detailed instructions. They were super available for questions after discharge which I appreciated. My cat and I went through some seriously difficult days and, after being on the brink of death, she has recovered. Im so grateful for AMC for this! Its a stressful place no doubt and extremely expensive. I will say that my final bills were less than the initial estimates. I hope that with recent gifts to AMC there will be more financial aid for those who cant afford the bills. Its understandable that costs are high for emergency vet care but its heartbreaking when people cant afford it.
Its two weeks since our beloved family members passed away Work youre so very much missed, I wish I knew about BluePearl Emergency Hospital, they tried their best to help; they provided me with medicine on our first Vet/Oncology appointment. The Oncologist had empathy. The medicine received from Blue Pearl stopped the growth and it started to decrease the size of the growth; we received the medicine the very first visit. I kept going to Animal Medical Center for over six months, was so missed lead; they kept telling me to keep my appointments, I did for a little over six months. Now I much ask, is it because I am an African American that my family and I received such poor service in Animal Medical Center Oncology Department? They could have provided the necessary medicine to help saved our family member/Dog. We had Work cremated and have a beautiful imprint of his paw in stone; were just a smart hardworking family, keeping it together. Please read my below comment prior to the passing of our loving Work. God BlessI cannot express what my dog is going through; The Schwarzman Animal Medical Center Oncology Dept knew they could not provide the radiation treatment for my dog cancer because of the facility renovation; their radiation treatment is not available. AMC Oncology Dept mislead me for six months. I arrived for my AMC appointment this month, at this appointment they referred me to another Hospital. I truly thought they had my dog care in their best interest, they should have referred me to the other hospital six months ago instead of telling me they were able to care for my pet back in August. So that you do not experience my situation, please ask if their (AMC) Oncology Radiation is operational if you have to get radiation treatment for your loving pet.
In Feb 2022, we lost our beloved cat and child. During the final stage of his acute kidney injury, we were told to seek aggressive treatment at AMC as it would be the only dialysis provider in the NYC area for a cat. In the 2.5 days we interacted with them, we had mixed feelings about the facility and its staff…mostly negative. Ironic and upsetting that the facility is set up to treat critically ill patients but don’t provide the emotional support that’s often needed for sick patients and their devastated family members. The phone operators are rude and will abruptly hang up. Visitation is limited to a max of 10 minutes. When I first arrived to admit my cat, distraught and worried sick, a doctor came in and after saying a few words, took my cat to the back without giving me the opportunity to say bye. Didn’t even inform me that that would be the last time I’d see him until visitation hours. Didn’t offer me the chance to console my confused cat. When my fiancé and I saw our cat the next day (in the 10 minutes that were allotted to us), he looked like a mess. They did NOT care to provide basic cleaning to his face or body. He had a cone on, which was covered in his fur and drool from the oral medication, which got all over his mouth and face. Cats are clean creatures so I KNOW he was stressed out of his mind from being unkempt. When we asked the doc why he hadn’t been cleaned, she told us that he “didn’t let them” because he’d get feisty. Now, I know my cat had aggressive tendencies at the vet but he was sedated daily for bloodwork so that excuse does not work for us. Really? They couldn’t have taken off his cone when he was sedated to wash HIM? He looked worse. It literally crushed our hearts to see him uncomfortable, confused, stressed. I couldn’t stop bawling even after I left the facility. They rushed our visitation time too. Let me tell you, I felt worse after seeing him than I had been on the way to the hospital, and I was already a wreck. Another thing — their billing infrastructure and decision-making process is horrendous. We were told dialysis would be another $10-15K on top of what we were already paying ($8.1K). Because we wanted to do everything in our power to save our baby’s life, we agreed. Then, we got the bill and it was $27K on top of what we already paid. My fiancé and I were devastated. We would not be able to afford it. Moreover, they kept giving us “we don’t know” and “maybe’s” when we asked about our cat’s survival probability and other statistics so that we’d have SOMETHING to justify that cost. All they could say was: a 50% chance of living even 1 year after treatment and he would run the risk of dying during the procedure from blood clot/blood loss and trauma. Their tone was awful - they were impatient with us, frustrated with our multiple questions, quick to put us down when we asked if there was any wiggle room with costs. They even said: “I mean if you know there’s a chance he’d make it, what’s a couple more thousand dollars…”A couple more thousand $$ is not little. Why did the amount change so drastically several times? We should’ve felt like we were looked after. We did not pursue dialysis as we didn’t want to risk his life during the procedure and accrue debt for ourselves. My vet friends had advised us against this option. We chose to discharge him so he could feel comfortable at home in his final moments. We were so upset from our experience… we entrusted our pet’s life to them and we didn’t feel looked after. On the day of his discharge, we also waited 3 hours. We’re angry and hurt. I wish they would’ve been there for us emotionally during his final days instead of making it worse. Clinical recovery is only one part of the equation. They should’ve treated him better. My heart is still crushed till this way. Wish I had gone out of state to seek treatment.
My mother and I rushed our 16 year old Yorkie Sockie, in a coma to AMC. Our primary Vet had advised and described AMC as the best animal ER. AMC medical staff and Dr. Rosenblum quickly responded to stabilize Sockie. All AMC staff (medical and office) were professional and caring. Dr. Greenfield showed sensitivity to our decision and emotions during Sockies euthanization. New York is very fortunate to have AMC 24/7. Sockie we love you forever!
This place totally trash 1 young girl at reception desk was nice but Er nurse last nite the white guy with blonde hair ponytail was nasty rude unprofessional the way he was talking to my aunty was unprofessional early this morning at 1am that treating people of color with attitude for no reason i came here around 1am this morning after my aunt dog have 4 seizure this place. Make me unwelcome i never come back here
I walked in here out of desperation and walked out with a bill of $800 and a dead pet. Real care wouldve ran me $4,500 here, pure extortion. Wouldnt be an exaggeration to say I was strong armed into putting my guinea pig who was having problems with her pregnancy down.
First time there and they took very good care of our Cleo. Shes 13 and was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Doesnt have a cure but can be somewhat managed. The doctor and staff were great. The dr explained everything over the phone and was very thorough of all possibilities. Dr was nice enough to go above and beyond. Happy to report that Cleo, one day later is much, much better. Had it not been for the visit, the story would be another. This post is being done in June 2020 and my charge for the visit was 240dls. I went to the ER. No appt needed. Of course if additional work is needed for your pet, they will give you additional charges. Cleo had no xrays, she had iv, meds and oxygen pad.**update: sad to report that my little baby Cleo passed away on Monday, July 6th 2020 @ 5:21 PM. She lasted one month exactly to the date and time from this picture. I want to thank the doctors and staff that took care of her while she was under their care. She died naturally and peacefully, she didnt want to go but her body just had to rest. Her energy is felt all round.
I have not experienced the ER yet (thankfully) but our dog has been with both their oncology and now rehab teams and we have been amazed at the care. we finally got answers on her issues (chronic shoulder tendon injuries) that multiple trips to our regular vet were treated as a mystery. they did an MRI and now have a clear rehab plan that should have her almost good as new in 6-9 months, which is a long time but we have been flailing in the dark for almost that long so are very relieved! not only that but my dog (who hates vets) seems to come out happy every time. I cannot go in with her but have spent hours on the phone with their vets. they even respond to emails and will call you back right away! which is a small miracle. It is expensive upfront but no more than any other hospital or specialist, but we know we are getting top care which in the long run I wish we had come here sooner because we have wasted lots of money at cheaper vets who did not fix the issues or even understand them. sometimes long wait time for first appointments with different depts. but once you are in you are in.I honestly wish human hospitals and doctors were like this, I feel my pet getting top notch care from compassionate people. it is a teaching hospital but the experienced doctors guiding the residents are 100% experts and in charge of the care.
Dr Daniel Carmichael is known for being New York City’s top rated board certified Veterinary Dentist, and was well worth the 7 month waiting list to have my cats dental procedure done by him. For starters, he is not only extremely knowledgeable on all things dental, but has a thorough understanding of overall feline health and different systems that can be affected by dental issues. I have a very healthy 15 year old Russian Blue male cat that had tooth decay on one of his fangs that was causing him pain and discomfort, especially when it came to eating. His primary care physicians (Dr Marc Siebert & Dr Allan Nyugen at Heart of Chelsea) had referred me to take him in to see Dr Carmichael to have his bad tooth pulled. I was very hesitant to have my cat put under anesthesia at 15 years old, but I knew the adverse health effects of leaving a rotting tooth fester was a risk I was not willing to take. Dr Carmichael is friendly, reassuring, and has excellent bedside manner. He did an incredible job on cleaning my cats teeth and removing the trouble tooth. He gets extra credit for reassuring me that my cat would still be “handsome as hell” even though he had to remove one of the front fangs. I highly recommend Dr Carmichael and will continue to see him for all of my cats future dental healthcare needs. 😺
I have nothing but positive things to say about AMC. The staff and doctors that work there are incredibly helpful and compassionate. My dog was recently hospitalized in the ICU for a number of days, and she received the absolute best care. They have been patient and kind with all of my questions since shes been discharged, and I truly believe they saved her life. While their services arent cheap, they are upfront regarding pricing and my bills have always been lower than the initial estimates--something I cant say for most practices, especially emergency care. A huge thank you to Dr. Valdez, Dr. King, and the entire internal medicine and emergency departments for helping my best friend!
My dog had liver disease that was being treated at home & being seen by his regular vet. Vet recommended he be rushed to emergency because his blood work showed he was worsening. My dog although taking meds for his liver was a happy baby. Still running around, playing, jumping etc the nurses couldnt believe he was 10 yrs old. 4 days in this place & he did a 360. I genuinely feel like he deteriorated with all the medications & pain meds that were administered. My baby died 5 days after he was rushed to emergency as i was told to do, when even though he was sick he was doing good before he was taken in. I want to share my experience because i genuinely feel if he had not been rushed to this hospital my baby would still be alive. I regret listening to my dogs vet & rushing him here.
Are little bulldog Maisy got very sick . We saw are Vet and they told us we need a Specialist and their is only one in NYC . At AMC . We live in Norwalk Ct and had to save are Dog we went right away . The staff where great saw us quickly and got us set up to see the specialist the next day . She stay with them and it was hard to leave are baby with them as we knew nothing about the Facility. I read a few of the reviews witch do not say how great the staff are . I just hope reading mine does them justiceFirst) they where very Confident reassuring and helpful..Second) the place was very clean and friendlyThird) it was easy to get a hold of a person when we called and they always knew are dog and where very helpful parking was as easy as it was to get to . A bit expensive but right there .I must tell you we just pick are dog up 4 hours ago . I feel the need to tell anyone that I would not Hesitate to take Maisy back . They where great and bill wasnt as bad as expected. SO IF YOU ARE AS WORRIED AS I WAS REST AT EASE THEY GOT THIS !!!THANK YOU A.M.C. your staff and Facility where far and beyond my expectations.
One star is only for the front desk. They are very nice and efficient.AMC is a place where hungry and greedy for Money. No matter if you have the insurance or not, please check your medical record carefully, some physical checkup are not necessary and useless for furry babies, even some treatments, which will only increase your baby‘s pain.AMC is not a place where staffed with totally skilled and experienced emergency docotors. Not everyone were lucky to meet a good DVM at here. Your baby ’s life is like gambling. Some doctors are rude ,numb, unkind and unreliable at all. Please prevent your furry babies from Sara Mansuri(DMV)My baby died due to her mal practice. She is careless and unprofessional!
We felt very well cared for when our kitten had to be admitted late at night with LUTS. The admitting vet took a thorough history, explained the diagnosis and helped us decide on a plan of care together. Once admitted, Dr. Zaibek kept us updated on his status and progress and took great care of him. She took the time to answer all of our questions and to follow up with us after discharge when we had more concerns about his recovery and whether to bring him back in. She really did a great job of reassuring us, making sure we understood what was going on, and supporting us in caring for our kitten at home. The only negative we had was the miserableness of waiting in the outdoor tent late at night with construction outside and the traffic whizzing by on to the FDR. Not a testament to the quality of care, just the location.
I just want to let someone know how much pain your institution caused me by not letting me be with my beloved cat when she went to the ER in critical condition in Dec. 14. I asked to be there with her but they would not let me. I knew she was critically ill and did not want her to be scared. Your insensitive policy has caused me great emotional pain, till this day.I got a very large bill though and went home with a dead cat. I thought your institution was top notch but I will never go back there again. My other cats have gotten much more humane care at other facilities during an emergency.Take me off your mailing list. You took enough money from me.I pain around $750 to help rescucitate my cat. I suspect the vet, who was very kind and professional (which raised this from one star to 3), knew she was dying, but nobody let me be with her. Its not her passing that pains me, it is the fact that I was not with her during her transition to the next world.Shame on your institution.Gail
I booked a dental cleaning for my dog over 5 months ago, I paid for bloodwork two weeks ago and they canceled my appointment two days before the date of the appointment. They offered me another appointment in JUNE 2022 (We are in November 2021).The place is not an establishment I recommend. They were not professional, they didnt have a correct approach and the attendant who called me wasnt helpful at all. What a disgusting experience!I will never go back to this place! Honestly it doesnt deserve even a star!
DO NOT BRING YOU FUR BABIES HERE. I was holding my deceased fur baby when they refused to perform an autopsy after their staff told me multiple times that they could (in addition to their website listing it as a service). Her body was dropped off and I saw her little body for the first time minutes before entering the building since she passed unexpectedly during a luxury car transport to NYC. I was told to set her poor little body on the check in counter and was later told by a male worker to stop crying or the security would be called as my baby lay dead on the table. They have no human decency. I am appalled at the treatment I received. This vet needs to have an internal review ASAP as they are cruel, unkind, and demeaning toward those who are mourning and the bodies of our best fur friends. They do not care about dogs or people.
Five years ago we took our Pomeranian here for a diagnosis and the diagnosis was great .doctors were great .very professional . My wife and I honestly do not know what happened to this place total 360 the past two years .our dog needs a surgery they told us that they are not allowed to tell us who the surgeon is .just drop your pet off at the door and pick her up when she’s ready to go home .without knowing who actually done the procedure this is unheard of .they are taking the Covid to a whole different level .not allowed to see a doctor or know his name who is performing the surgery on our Pet who was is a second daughter to us .but they are not shy to take the $5000-$7000 it cost for the surgery .very unprofessional somethings wrong !they are really going down the tubes .it’s a real shame was a really great hospital at one time. We found another hospital. do not want to say the name .to perform the surgery for our pet .and it is out of state .best decision we ever made.
Absolutely worst animal emergency in the city. The staff is completely incompetent and rude. Coming here made an already stressful situation with my puppy 100x worse. They don’t care about you or your animal - only money. Avoid this place if you care about your animal. I cannot stress enough how awful my experience here was and urge you to look elsewhere for emergency care.
I had an emergency with my cat on New Years Day; I was very nervous about losing him and had not slept. Everyone I encountered here from the person who checked my temperature at the door, to the receptionists, to the vet assistants, doctors, and surgeons were helpful, friendly and understanding through the entire process. I just picked my pet up today and had a similarly pleasant experience with all the staff I interacted with over the phone and in person. Im very grateful for their care. My pet is at home recovering now and Im beyond relieved. I hope to never have that kind of emergency with him again, but I believe AMC was the best place for him to be in that kind of situation. Thanks for everything!
My dog Toby was diagnosed with a luxating patella grade 3. Surgery was recommended but the next surgical consult appointments arent. available until MARCH 2022!!!!!! They sent him on his way with a 1 week supply of pain meds and A take him to his regular vet. The reason I took him there is because they have the facilities and expertise or so I thought to help my dog. No other alternatives were provided. I NEVER even met the vet face to face just through the phone while Im sitting in the waiting area. Now I have to find somewhere else to get him better care and hopefully get him the surgery he needs.Update: Took Toby to The Animal Surgical center where they gave him the care that he needed. They performed the surgery and they did a wonderful job. Toby is 2 weeks post-op and hes doing great
This place was horrendous with patients. The front Lady Ms. Rey was not professional and extremely condensing to my family. Ms Diaz was very understanding and easy to talk to. Only two people are allowed in the euthanasia. As a medical provider I approach my patients being humble and empathetic. The way the staff treats people could be a reflection of them not being compensated for their work. If I was that broke working in that place I’ll be a bitter person too. What’s worst is the way they throw the pets in the front shed in those horrible black bags. Proceed with caution.
My cat hurt her paw and ended up needing a splint, which come to find out from another vet, that they didnt put it on right way, which would cause even more mobility issues and she was very uncomfortable. To think how much money I spent to get my cat treated, you would think they would do it the right way. Theyre crazy expensive, they literally charge twice as much as any other vet.
The best thing I can say is that they sure do their job’s correct. Otherwise they just charge you for literally anything. Make sure before you go, you have at least 500 for the walk in fee just for you’re pet to be seen for any reason at all because thats the charge you automatically get. You can apply for pet insurance but not everyone can get it if you don’t have good income ! When I say they charge you ANYTHING & EVERYTHING they use on you’re pet, trust and believe me. My cat’s bill’s was extremely high for no reason. Personally Never again will I go there.
I wanted to share specifically about my experience dealing with the Integrative & Rehabilitative Medicine Dept as well as Neurology. We were not able to travel to the AMC, so they offered to work with us via video conferencing. Needless to say, it was worth every penny and made quite affordable.Their capable team of rehab nurses and residents that coached us through batteries of exercises, such that I felt confident to recreate them daily with my nearly 16 yo Standard Poodle. All the while, under the wise supervision of the department chief, Dr. Alvarez.Dr. Britt and Caitland, you’ll be missed! Welcome, Dr. Tsai.We just returned for a recheck and the results are nothing short of remarkable. They couldn’t be more pleased and so are we.We expected the highest level of professionalism, but it has been their loving support, kindness and caring commitment to my dog’s welfare that has carried the day.We are also the beneficiaries of Dr. McCue’s expertise in neurological disorders of the aging canine brain. Thank you.Last but not least, a special shout-out for Eve, one of competent care coordinators who made sure every letter “t” was crossed and every “i” was dotted.Eternally Grateful.
I brought my cockatiel Zeus here who unfortunately was too late stage to save. The care and attention he received, however, was so dedicated and personal. They updated me twice a day and really did everything they could, with round the clock monitoring. After he passed, they left me a beautiful, genuine voicemail to help me through my grieving process, and today I received a letter that they had donated to have a tree planted in a National Forest in his honor. So above and beyond. Amazing service and customer care.
Took my dog who showed signs of a digestive disorder or Pancreatitis. He only became ill within few hours and had all the symptoms of this. But, a young VET took him for assessment, did blood work, then chest xray, said increased heart rate and crackles in lungs. I said he is going in for sepsis, hydrate him and antibiotics. But he wanted a abdominal xray and said there might be something in abdominal cavity though I said, he had bowel movements and never is impacted. then this VET said, to keep; him overnight and treat $5000. I asked him to be discharged and given a broad spectrum antibiotic suspension and I will take care of my dog. After an hour he brought Marely out. He had hydrated him and prescribed Gabapentin, Codeine along with clavamox. My pet had no pain but was being begun on pain meds. I refused Gabapentin but he insisted on Codeine for three days. The cashier overcharged me and had to reimburse me for charging medication twice. I paid a bill of almost $750.Marely recovered under my compassionate care within 24 hours. All he needed was the antibiotic because of the infection. He is a wiry dog who survived much in life and my dear friend. since I am a registered nurse with vast experience I knew what was happening and this cabal at this hospital could not cheat him out of his dear life and my hard earned money. This VET like the medical system of yore and fleecing the owners and not offering cost effective care. Mercenary minded not humane. I will write to the State VET/Medical Board.
***update: a year later and Im blessed to say my dog is still doing fine and I still think about the what if from this day.**update: two months later, my dog is doing amazing(thank god) and Im still upset they told me he was going to die two months ago. Honestly hate this hospital. Buncha money hungry liars.**Took my dog(13y) here for a blood transfusion after getting blood tests done at a different clinic. The hospital then says they need to retake blood($500) even though we had a referral and the referral was from the day before. From their blood tests they say my dog has numerous problems despite what our vet says, then say we should do the treatment(3k) or put to sleep. Then when we declined both, they required us to sign a paper knowing our dog will pass away. Then had the nerve to say they will do the blood transfusion(1k) only after we declined the treatments because we declined everything else and said itll only help him for a few more days. This place seemed to only care about getting money out of us. Disappointed but not surprised. Take your pets some wheres else before you try this place, only take your pet here if its the last option.
My dog had a hole in his chest after being attacked by another dog. AMC ER vet told us he was too busy to tend to our dog and our dog had to wait til the end of his shift to receive care. We were told he needed chest X-rays to determine the amount of damage since the hole appeared to be very deep. It was $300 just to walk in the door. 5 hours later, we were told to pick him up. When we showed up the bill was over $1,000 and they didn’t stitch the hole closed. The same hole that was so deep that it definitely required xrays & sedation but then somehow it wasn’t deep enough to require stitches. They billed me for everything under the sun and the doctor refused to come out and discuss the matter with me, he literally said he was too busy. Their system is CLEARLY designed to bill as much as possible and provide as little care as possible. VERY disappointing experience. This place should not be in business. $1,300 later and I’m not sure if my dog is ok.
I brought my dog there Thursday night after bringing him to his vet in westchester for a cough. After an x-ray at his vet, we found out his heart was extremely enlarged and filled with fluid. I brought him to amcny to see if they can save him. Walking into the door two nurses come running out ready to snatch him out of my arms without saying a word. I was hesitant and asked can you please explain what you are going to do first! When a person comes in holding a dog and you know NOTHING the first reaction shouldn’t be let’s just grab this dog and take him away ! A nice nurse then explained she wanted to put him on oxygen and someone will call me from the back. Dr Kennedy did call me to tell me they wanted to drain the fluid from his heart but it might fill back or he might die in the process. I said i wanted to see him before this is done. An extremely cold hearted nurse came out with my dog holding him. She Didn’t want to let me hold him, hug him, she had an extremely annoyed look on her face . I was crying hysterically this is my baby and anyone who has a pet they love , knows the feeling . She then proceeded to say ok we need to take him back nastily n just walked away. I think your staff needs to be taught how to handle situations better and if you have no heart you shouldn’t work in an animal hospital !!! Yes they saved my dog that night however he died the next day. I’m grateful i was able to spend one day with him to say goodbye however I don’t think i would use this place again when your staff is extremely rude .
The team at AMC are absolutely incredible. I took my dog there for treatment for a brain tumor. We were really scared and didn’t have high hopes for his recovery. Every step of his treatment was explained to me with great detail and my whole family was treated with the utmost empathy and care. The entire radiology oncology team is amazing. Top notch. And best of all, my pup is now happy and healthy. Thank you AMC!
I went to the clinic 09/04/21 Dr.Moore said I need a CT and an X-ray but unfortunately they don’t work on weekends. They did the procedure because my rabbit had a bump under his chin and we didn’t know what it was. So Dr. Moore had did the surgery and when I got my bunny after he was done with everything Dr. Moore and his partner gave me medication for me to give my rabbit. I found my rabbit dead this morning at 10:30am on September 5,2021. He was only 7 months old and was really healthy. I should’ve took him somewhere else because they killed my bunny. I don’t know if they over medicated my bunny but he’s gone and was really close to the family.
I have an 8 mo old giant English Mastiff puppy who was feeling under the weather recently, and when her regular vet couldn’t get her in, I brought her to AMC as a walk-in. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but from the moment we walked in the door, we were treated professionally and with the utmost kindness and compassion. COVID precautions were in place, and we felt safe and cared for here. The pup is quite fearful of new experiences in general (never more so than when she isn’t feeling well) and everyone we met with was patient and reassuring. I wish I could remember everyone’s names, but I was so flustered over her sudden illness that I wasn’t taking mental notes very well. Mikey the vet tech was incredibly patient with her, and I will forever be grateful to Dr Andrea Trafney for being so gentle and accommodating, and for correctly diagnosing & treating my giant puppy so she could quickly get back to her zany puppy self. Special call-out to the gentleman known to his colleagues as “the dog whisperer” who was a true angel in helping to get this scared, stubborn, under-the-weather giant puppy into the vehicle to come home. You are all amazing! And I felt the cost was extremely reasonable, given the circumstances. It was not a fast visit, but it’s an EMERGENCY clinic, and the patients are triaged as such. Planning on switching to AMC for all of our care after this experience. As the pet cab driver told me, “This place is the Harvard of NYC veterinary clinics…” Highly, highly recommend!
My cat needed emergency surgery for an obstruction, and was seen by the ER team, internal medicine team, and interventional radiology (IR) team. Everyone who took care of him was in constant communication with me about his status, was very patient with all of my questions, and extremely knowledgeable. Not to mention that the surgery saved his life. I am so deeply thankful for the care theyve provided and yes, you will spend a decent amount of money but as a fellow veterinarian I can honestly say the quality of care is just unmatched. I wouldnt want to take my cat anywhere else.
I will not take any of my pets anywhere else whether it’s for an emergency, dental care or a basic wellness check. The entire team at AMC is incredible. The doctors are the best in the country. They are smart, thorough, caring and dedicated. If you love your pet and you want them to get the best medical care possible, don’t go anywhere else!
I got my puppy, 12 weeks old, from a breeder in Oklahoma, so she was flown from there to Maryland. Later that night she started to cough and didnt stop. Since my vet was closed, I took her there at 10:30 pm. After examining her, she was diagnosed with kennel cough. I was given meds, instructions and told to quarantine her from my other dog...highly contagious. It took awhile, as the said it would, for her to recover but she did. They were wonderful! I wouldnt hesitate to go back.
If your pet is in distress, or you are in distress about your pet, you should not hesitate to bring them to the American Medical Center. And, while I have not brought my dog here for routine medical treatment, I would not hesitate to do so.AMC is transparent with their pricing, thorough in their examinations, abundantly empathetic, and encourages follow ups.Price transparency: when you first walk in, they ask you to acknowledge the base price for emergency services ($229) with your signature. Then, before they perform any other tests or dispense any medication, they run the price by you most often or, are very willing to go through the breakdown with you.Thorough in their examinations: they explain, in simple terms, each step they are going to take and why they are going to take it. They also give you additional options which they say are not required but, could be taken if you wanted to and what the pros and cons of doing so are. I never felt like my dog was being underserved or that I was being sold unnecessary tests or meds.Abundantly empathetic: everyone at AMC is empathetic, reassuring, and kind beyond belief -- from the covid check-in nurse on the first floor and the front desk administrative staff to the vet assistant that retrieves your dog to the vet that treats your dog. This attitude makes me so comfortable handing over my dog, especially in these weird covid times when I could not be with her.Encouraging follow ups: after leaving the emergency room, the vet gives you their email and encourages you to follow up with lingering questions! I was once in touch with a vet for two weeks after my visit as my pet recovered and never felt like the vet was resentful towards my follow up questions.I see that in the reviews, several people have noted the long wait times. These are not exaggerated. But, they are also unavoidable. Pets are being brought in with fevers, broken legs, seizures, bloody vomit, dog attack wounds, and more! While all of these are emergencies, some of them need *immediate* attention and some of them can wait an hour or so. Just because I came in with my dog first does not mean that I think she should be seen before a dog who will die if they are not seen immediately. And I think it is unreasonable for people to think otherwise.I felt compelled to write this review because each time I have been here, there has been someone who was completely awful to the administrative staff, including threatening to write an undeserved bad review. I note this to say, please take bad reviews for what they are -- reports from people who were going through a tough time, which may have colored their experience.Just yesterday, a woman threw a fit because her dog would first be seen by a veterinary resident before being seen by a veterinarian (even though this is standard protocol and her dog was not in immediate danger). She scolded the administrative staff, saying if my dog dies, it is your fault and then left without making sure her dog got care. This behavior was especially jarring given that two people in the waiting room were just told they had to put their dogs down... Unfortunately this is not an uncommon occurrence at AMC, and yet the staff treated her with nothing but the utmost respect. As I hope you can tell from this review -- I am a fan of AMC and will continue to bring my dogs here for any emergency we encounter because I am confident my dogs will receive the best care possible.
We brought our dog,Daisy, into the Emergency Department in October 2021. She was extremely ill. After checking in, we were quickly brought to triage, where a wonderful nurse evaluated Daisy and very kindly suggested that she be brought inside immediately. She asked our permission to start IV fluids and draw some bloodwork. Dr Emily Tran was the doctor in charge of Daisy. She explained that Daisy needed to be admitted to ICU where she would be monitored carefully. We agreed. Dr Victoria Albano was Daisys doctor in the ICU.I cant begin to tell you how wonderful she was. She called us several times a day to update Daisys status, her thoughts and plan for care. In addition, to being informative, she was so genuinely kind and loving to my girl. She took the time to tell me Daisys mood, that she was eating and what she was eating and how her nights went. I dont know how to thank her for her unbelievable kindness! She treated Daisy as though she were her own beloved pet. She helped us get through a very scary time by being so loving and thoughtful. Dr Albano went above and beyond to get us all through this time. If anyone should be a Veternarian, Dr Albano is at the front of the line! God bless her! Animals who fall under her care are truly blessed. Even after Dr Albano moved on to another rotation, she followed Daisys progress and peeked in on her in ICU to give her some love and comfort and a treat! Daisy is now stabilized and home, but not out of the woods. We are hoping for the best for her. We will never forget Dr Albano and her ability to get Daisy and her family through such a terrifying time. We just had to let you know how grateful we are to meet such a stellar professional and human being! We wish you all good things with the Match! THANK YOU!!!!!
Our mastiff Athena ‘s life was saved at Animal Medical CenterShe had a very serious medical condition that Dr.Palma discovered. She was a patient in the ICU & taken very good care ,Dr’s & staff kept us informed. Athena was treated with great care & kindness. Our other dog Betsey ( maltipoo) had bladder surgery. Dr.’s & staff are outstanding. Best hospital in the United States
I first went to The Animal Medical Center over 20 years ago when my kitten was so sick the vet I had seen had told me to put him to sleep. The vets at AMC found out right away what was wrong, were able to fix the issue and my cat lived for 19 wonderful years. The second time I went was when a vet specialist told me that my kitten was so sick due to a kidney issue that she only had weeks to live and that AMC had a Dr. that had innovated a device and surgery that may be able to save her. After my previous experience with AMC there was not a doubt in my mind about what I would do. From our first consultation to every single visit since then, the Drs. and staff have been incredible. The Drs. are absolutely amazing and work so hard to help your pet. Trust me, I have experienced this first hand. Their level of ingenuity and dedication to our pets is unsurpassed. Every single staff member I have dealt with have been so wonderful and compassionate. They go out of their way to help you in any way possible. I am so thankful to AMC for giving me the gift of time with both my cherished cats.
I needed a bottle of dasequin for my pupper after leaving hers in NYC. When I called and said I did not have the prescription but that she needed it they were willing to sell me a bottle and for that I am grateful. However I was charged double what dasequin is normally priced at which was really uncool. A joint supplement, 108 dollars. This is a poor area and you’re charging double for something to alleviate discomfort. This behavior is what gives our field a bad name. Thank you and I hope you rethink your profit margins.
We took our dog in for emergency surgery 3 years ago and the experience was excellent. This time around it has been absolutely the worst. Past the ER visit, it is impossible to get in touch with a doctor and get an answer to a follow-up question. The call attendants DO NOT CARE. Three days now I am writing emails (as per their instructions) and no one is responding to me. We had to eventually go to our regular vet the get the answers and medication we were seeking.
I took my dog to this capitalisms hospital paid $250 dollars mind you i live in a fix income, this hospital did not care our pets are part of our family and release her with just gabapentin 300 she dont eat but drink water this hospital only interest is money and thousand of then.raye this place 0
Took my injured canary there and they were the only place that would allow me to make payments over time. money wasnt an issue like with other vetinary hospitals they really love animals because other places like humane society you call and when I finally brought my bird there they said sorry we no longer treat birds and as for that vetinary avian bird hospital on Columbus Ave on the west side they could care less and didnt want to be bothered they said if I cant pay it at once I should surrender my pet or have him euthanized wich was heart breaking to hear. Dr wise at the animal medical center and all the staff there were kind, compassionate, and loving they really went above and beyond to help me with my sick bird. the place is immaculate and they did everything and then some for my pet. they let me make a down payment and pay the rest in installments. Ill definitely be going there from now on and so will the rest of my family I couldnt be happier with the care my pet received there. if I could give 10 stars I would.
What an absolute terrible experience here. Ive tried over 3 times to see Dr. West the head of neurology to examine my dog. I had scheduled an appointment with him in June which was cancelled because Dr West requested the day off. I than rescheduled with him for his next available appointment which was in July. July comes, my appointment again has to be reschedule because Dr West has requested the day off. Ok, so I rescheduled again in August the next earliest time to see Dr West. I just received a call from the medical center saying my appointment with Dr West was once again cancelled because hes going on vacation and I would be seeing another doctor there. Is this how you do business? I requested to see him over 3 times in the last 3 months and this is the 3rd time Ive been canceled on. When I asked why they scheduled me for this date if he was not working they said they didnt know why. They said the earliest i could possibly see him was in September or October. Im in absolute RAGE; I couldve and shouldve took him to another hospital to another neurologist because clearly this center doesnt accommadate nor respect their schedule or their patients schedule. Dr West apparently only works 3 days a week and really thats probably only 1 or 2 days a week since he cancels his appointments at least once a week. This is so frustrating I couldve had my dog seen a long time ago if i had known I was going to get the run around I wouldnt of bothered waiting to see Dr West at this center. Avoid making appointments here - your never going to actually see the doctor youve requested. Terrible customer service!!!!!
The most knowledgeable, dedicated, and complete care you will find, I am so thankful that I live in a community where my pets have access to this level or world class care and resources for me as an owner. Thank you to Dr. Dyke and staff in the community practice team for taking such good care of my girl Cleo. I have taken advantage of many of the educational and support programs offered by the Usdan Institute, in good times and bad over my time in New York as a pet owner. Going to AMC is to be connected to a network of every type of care imaginable. They won’t be with us forever, but I know I’m in good hands to give her the longest healthiest life possible.
Is really sad so sad doctors dont care about saving animal life. I feel they care about more the money saving animals life. I lose my cat today and the ask me alot money too have surgery and ect for my cat.i dont have the money so they cant do anything so savig his life ,so i have to make the hardest decision in my life to put him sleep ,im so devastated and sad cause they cant do anything for him. If i was having the moneys they will saving his life.. so i see moeny is important to save animal life. I wish i have u can be doctor animal i will saving alot animal life with asking about money.. this is really sad in new york city about much money for animal and doctors cant do anything about it. Puerto Rcio they dave animal life they really care. My dog in PR was really bad condition and the doctor take care my dog with asking money. Jope my cat is in heaven and im sorry i dont have the money to saving his lif
Employees are rude and give off a toxic and uninviting vibe, I absolutely did not feel safe leaving my dog Toby here for treatment or an evaluation and instead went elsewhere. This place used to be great years ago, I guess there’s new management now who only keeps uncaring and unkind people around. Too bad I can’t leave 0 stars.
This is a hospital that does the bare minimum if you are not paying a thousand dollars and more. PLEASEEE find a different vet if your pet is sick. This place mostly wants your money and barely care for you pets. First, the doctor calls me to say that she did not know what was wrong with my cat and that she wanted to do blood tests. So I told her that it was ok to do so. Then 30 minutes later she calls back to tell me that she still doesn’t know what’s wrong with my cat but she believes that he has liver disease and that she wants to do X-rays on his liver and something else that would total up to $3,500. She was not fully confident in what was wrong with him and wanted to do all these extra tests. I left that day only paying a small amount of $463 and I still did not know what was wrong with my cat. Three days later I took my cat to a different vet and told them everything the previous doctor said. This doctor took blood tests and told me that my cats liver was perfectly fine and gave him a shot that started to make my cat feel better. Moral of the story, if you want to potentially not cure your pet and spend a lot of money... go there. Oooh and one more thing they’re going to try to sign you up for a credit carddd dontttt do itttt!!! Just a way to trap you into owing them.
The price of the treatment/testing are about twice the price i get from my regular vet.I waited for 1.5 hour when I dropped my bunny for an emergency. and also they kept me waiting for 2.5 hours when I picked my bunny up, even though I told them that Id arrive at 5pm at noon. They didnt get things ready by the time that I informed them ahead and kept me waiting for almost 3 hours.
The care, covid protocols, and people here are fantastic. 5 stars for that. The 1 star is for not being upfront about pricing. When I called to ask about spaying my 2 rabbits they said $140/bun for a visit/assessment and the surgery would be $350/bun. Expensive but pretty standard for NYC.Today I arrive for their visit/assessment and they ask if I want to do a $250/bun blood work panel required for surgery. Again, expensive but fine. Then after they do the visit they say that if I want to do the surgery it’s an additional $850/bun for one night of boarding, anesthesia, and after care. This is $1100/bun more than they had told be over the phone. They do not offer payment plans. Now I am out the money for the visit and the blood work panel and have to start over at another hospital.Costs are costs, I get it, but they have to be upfront about it. It’s pretty immoral to be doing this during the best of times but especially during a global pandemic when unemployment is at an all time high and people are struggling to pay for rent/food/medical care. This is a necessary surgery for my pets and all they needed to do was be upfront about it.
We love everything about AMC. Our senior dog has had multiple surgeries for different things. Lipoma, mass cell tumor, ACL surgeries 2x, and most recent a huge scary one removing a tumor on his liver. Each of these visits AMC has been amazing to us and our Dog Marko. They answer every question we have and always followed up after his surgeries to see how he is doing. The care our pets receive there is beyond 10 stars. We never take him anywhere else and we always recommend them to all the pet parents we know.
Great staff except for the patient service department. Came to have my dogs tumor examined, both the front desk staff and the doctors were great, unfortunately my dogs cancer was very aggressive and had to put her to sleep. I called many times to make arrangement for my dogs remain and was transferred to their patient service department with no luck, no one answered, and no return call from my message. I was finally able to get help from the appointment desk and arranged my dogs body to be picked up for cremation. Again when I called back to confirm the pick up of her remains, the patient service did not pick, had to call back to front desk to leave message. When a guy from the patient service called back, he was not the most friendly especially considering he works at the patient service department dealing with pet owners who just had lost their pets.
I am appalled and disgusted with my experience at the AMC. I will never take a pet there again. I brought my sick cat there to do a scan and some tests to figure out why she was not eating. I left her overnight so that the scan could be done in the morning. They called to tell me that the cat had enlarged lymph nodes and that they could do further tests to find out whether it was lymphoma. I agreed to the tests. When I picked the cat up i was told she was doing better. That was a complete lie. She was totally changed when I got her home. She stopped eating and drinking, could barely walk and was unresponsive. I was told she might be in shock for 24 hours. It has been 4 days sind she has continued to decline to the point of near death. I do not know what happened at the hospital to create this horrible change in her. She is not the same cat. They charge an absolute fortune and they destroyed my cat.
They saved my bulldog from months of pneumonia. Finally gave me answers for his condition!!I have a 2-year-old english bulldog. These doctors cured my dogs chronic pneumonia after the first visit. I went to my other vet 7 times for pneumonia and they could not fix it from coming back. Dr. Spector identified he had an elongated pallet and performed surgery. My dog was in great hands and recovered perfectly. Hasnt had a case of pneumonia since. Now he has a bad skin issue that out local vet couldnt fix yet again. We recently had a dermatology appointment here at AMC and the doctor is confident we can fix his paws and put us on a promising medicine/skincare routine. If you have an animal with a reoccurring issue that just wont seem to go away, these are the Vets to go to. They are so smart and will save you hundreds of dollars because they diagnose it right the first time. Dont hesitate to make an appointment. Sometimes they are booked up 2 months in advanced (depends on the vet) but make the appointment. No other Veterinary practice is better than theirs. Your local vet can only do so much.
I never, ever write reviews but I am so distraught over this experience. Long story short: these people led to my dog dying. We took her here because we thought she had a stroke or a seizure. The care we received was completely negligent because five days later my dog died. We watched her die, suffering because the doctor didn’t adequately diagnose my dog. They told us she would be okay and they everything was fine when it clearly wasn’t. Our dog was not okay and we took her to AMC to try and find a cure for her. The doctor cared more about a cut on her face (from our other dog and not the reason we were there), getting the most money out of us and seeing her quickly than the real issue, which was a neurological order which the doctor did not even address! The doctor misled us and did not perform proper care.I followed up with them via email because I was so disgusted with the lack of care and they completely lied. I then got a condescending, careless email in return about how the care was within the guidelines, of which I care to disagree. They told me the doctor addressed concern about neurological issues via phone because they wouldn’t let us in. They also noted we should have her admitted and he never said that to us over the phone. Not once did the doctor say any of that to us yet it is apparently noted in the chart. The doctor seemed to have have committed malpractice, then marked up the chart with lies to cover himself. They are liars and they are crooks. They only care about getting your money and misdiagnosing your pet. Please, please, please do NOT go here if you care for the well-being of your pets. Do not give this place your business.
Dont take your pet here. They will bleed you dry and tell you your dogs only option is euthanasia when its not. They said my dog had a month or two left, but when I took him to a different vet they got everything sorted and its been 4 months since we were here. All they care about is money here and everyone is so rude. Go elsewhere.
I had a great experience at AMC from the appointment setter, to the front desk, to the gentleman who accompanied my anxious dog inside to the Doctor (during Covid). Dr. Lebowitz was absolutely wonderful and quickly diagnosed my dog, unfortunately with Chiari Malformation, however, she was so thorough, and reassuring about the prognosis. My options for a neurologist were AMC and Blue Pearl. Having had a bad experience at the latter, I was nervous to go to AMC but they exceeded expectations. Would definitely recommend.
My cat went into sudden heart failure recently. I took her to a emergency vet in Brooklyn who thought they could help. The next day they said her prognosis was guarded and they were unable to help her. She was not stable and we didnt think she would make it. They recommend AMC so we rushed her there right away. When we got to AMC it was a total 180. The doctors were positive and informed and worked very quickly. Two hours after arriving we felt so much better and we had answers and positive, but honest details of her treatment and prognosis. Every single time I met or talked to a doctor they made it a point to say something very nice about my cat or tell me about a sweet interaction they had with her. Every single time. This was such a scary and hard time for us, but they saved her life and gracefully handled me and my questions and concerns. I feel so thankful for each and every person there. Sure, the visit can be expensive, but they have the best of the best here. Because its a teaching hospital you get the added benefit of many doctors and residents reviewing the case and coming up with the best treatment plan. Beyond grateful for all they do and how dedicated they are.
I hate writing reviews. I dont think its fair to deter people from using a service based on a purely anecdotal experiences. But I think my experience is important to share, especially considering how strongly we value our pets and seek quality care for them. My cat was diagnosed by my vet with urinary crystals, he was given opioids and had a terrible reaction. My cat was laying on my bed, unconscious, turning grey, eyes open and unresponsive. I rushed him to AMC, rushed through the door and begged them to see him right away because I was sure he was dying. After they took him, and I waited about an hour in sheer panic until the vet called me. I described the situation and I admit, i may not have articulated it his symptoms as accurately as I couldve looking back. I was completely flustered and anxious. That being said, the vet that was looking after my cat was incredibly demeaning, condescending and dismissive. She really chalked it up that he was just drugged and I was overreacting. She assumed I knew that opioids lower body temperature, slow heart rate, cause total sedation. (Im still quite certain he was dying and may have just snapped out of it by the drama of being in the vet). The vet seemed so eager to not have to deal with me or my cat anymore. Which is the last thing you want when you feel your baby dying in front of your eyes. Sure, I was a hysterical woman and was frazzled but I imagine thats what should be expected when youre working at an animal hospital at 1am. I only write this to help anyone avoid this tough situation. It was heart-wrenching to deal with. I later brought him to Blue Pearl on West 55th and got absolutely amazing care. They were thorough, unbelievably sympathetic and most importantly, they listened and heard my concerns and investigated what I was worried about. It just seems counterintuitive to have any vet with this bedside manner. I ended up having to shell out. $5,000 to Blue Pearl for care, which is so expensive but was worth it to have my guy make such a dramatic turn around. Thats $5,000 that AMC could have received for themselves but I will be avoiding this hospital at all costs. I hope this helpful to anyone having to make these tough decisions. It was truly an awful situation that I hope no one ever has to go through. I should note however, the front desk staff and nurses were helpful and kind. If you have a certain vet at AMC that you trust, please ignore this. I dont discredit the entire hospital, just this one vet who really exacerbated a miserable situation .
I brought my cat in on 2/10/21 for an evaluation because he had left hind leg pain and difficulty walking, the vet who saw him (Mastrocco) recommended chest x-rays to rule out a cardiac issue after evaluating him. I insisted on lower leg x-rays given his chief complaint. The x-rays showed a left knee dislocation, which would have been missed if I had not insisted on lower extremity x-rays. In addition, she did not communicate with me that she worked nights only and I was concerned when I did not hear back about the final radiology results the next day as she said she would call. She finally called me back after 6pm the next day and after I had waited on the phone lines for over half an hour to reach her. In addition, when I called AMC to schedule an urgent ortho appt for the dislocation, I was told the earliest appt is April 24, 2021. The whole experience is disheartening from the almost missed diagnosis, lack of communication and now inability to actually get urgent treatment. My cat is in pain and has an actual orthopedic issue and it wont even be addressed for at least another two months and you diagnosed it? Completely unacceptable.
I had to rush my fur baby here for an emergency, IF YOU COME IN WITH ANY LIFE THREATENING EMERGENCIES, ITS $229 AUTOMATICALLY!! They ask you upfront if you can clear $400-600 depending on what kind of tests are necessary. But it could go up to $1K. They treated him quickly and got him stabilized. Due to COVID the vet needs to update you VIA cell phone. They are also 24/7 , I ended up here because most vets stop taking walk ins at 7:30pm
I have taken my senior dog and two senior cats to the AMC for many years. Dr. Elizabeth Appleman is their Internal Medicine veterinarian. I would need at least five MORE stars to show my appreciation. She saved my dogs life by having Dr. Katie Kennedy safely remove what turned out to be a mast cell tumor. All three of my animals are thriving under the professional and kind care they are receiving. AMC is a quality animal medical center and I highly recommend their devoted attention to the animals and the way they keep owners informed of all that is happening. During the covid epidemic they have worked hard to accommodate both the patients and the owners.
After a particularly troublesome time I had at a HUMAN hospital, I was concerned that an animal hospital would have the same pitfalls — but I was wrong! The center was well-designed for housing animals: there is a ramp from the first floor to the second; there’s cat waiting room (which I love as my cat usually has a difficult time with all the dogs in the waiting room); and amenities provided to guests (free phone charging station, clean bathrooms, TVs in the waiting room, etc).My cat was seen as soon as we entered the office and I was very positively surprised at how genuinely nice every member of the staff was during all parts of the (usually difficult) experience.Although the tests and results took almost 5 hours and were quite pricey (x-rays, neurological test, blood work), our doctor was very communicative providing updates every time she came into the waiting room for other animals and consulting with me privately twice before final delivery. They provided all the medicines we needed at affordable prices with clear delivery notes. And after 36 hours our cat is back to her normal playful self! While waiting I read some literature on this Animal Hospital and was surprised to hear that it originally opened in 1910 and has continued serving the animals of NY for over a century. I certainly didn’t expect it but was pleasantly comforted knowing my pet was in good hands.I HIGHLY recommend this hospital to all pet-owners out there in case you ever need it!
I usually dont leave reviews but I dont want anyone elses beloved pet to be abused. If you use this centers services make sure your pet is NOT handled by Veterinary Assistant Eponine King at any point of your pets visit. She abuses her own dog, Im not sure how a Veterinarian Office could hire such a negligent pet owner. I can only imagine how she treats and handles a strangers pet..
This is a specialized, emergency vet clinic. No they are not cheap. However, they are not as expensive as I was expecting when I first visited their emergency room, and the doctors are up front about what procedures / tests are necessary and which can wait. My cat had been sick for months and her primary vet couldnt find a cause, so I took her to a feline only office - they still couldnt determine the cause. They ended up referring me to the neuro department at AMC and thank god they did because I FINALLY got some answers and a treatment plan that works. Pickles has been seizure free for almost a month and Im so grateful to see her getting back to her normal self and not living in pain & fear. I can only say great things about AMC and their staff (everyone is so friendly and helpful!) and will continue to recommend this facility.
Earlier today my vet told me my dog would potentially need surgery after xrays showed her stomach was enlarged. A few hours later after no improvement we decided to bring her to an emergency center.Problem #1: I called about five “24 hour” emergency animal hospitals. Some of them were closed LOL and the ones that were open told me that AMC was the only hospital that would have a surgeon. So I was forced to come here out of necessity, not by choice.Problem #2: Why is it so expensive?? $250 just to examine my dog, $1200 just for bloodwork and an X-ray, $3500 more if I wanted to admit her. All of that and they couldn’t even tell me what exactly was wrong with her or if she’d need surgery. A mess. This place honestly feels like a scam. I wouldn’t come back here, because I’d have to start selling my own organs to afford my pets care. The service was quick and the parking lot is free but that was pretty much the only good thing about this place. .
Very friendly (people and pet) professionals who are knowledgeable and thorough. I dont trust my pet who love as I would a child to just anyone. I really feel good about leaving my pet in their very safe hands. I recommend this Animal Hospital very highly. Ive been here w/ two separate pets and on several occasions with the newest addition to my family my pitbull Sammy.I have always been happy and relieved as every time my pet was cured an ended up being just fine in the end result.
One of our cats unfortunately swallowed a good chunk of his Cat Dancer Rainbow Cat Dancer toy, and needed emergency care. We came here after the first emergency vet hospital we visited told us they didnt have a surgeon on call. And honestly, I wish wed just come here from the start.Side note: Even if you think you might not need it, get pet insurance!! The care our kitty received here was excellent, but not cheap – and nobody *expects* these things to happen, they just do. Insurance saved us thousands of dollars.Because of COVID-19, only one person per pet is allowed in; but they had heated tents with phone charging stations for those who cant enter. The check-in process was pretty smooth – I brought my pet to the receptionist who had me fill out some paperwork, and then I was directed to a room where I discussed my cats issue with a triage nurse. Not long after, the ER vet (Dr. Wong) came to pick up my cat for treatment. Communication with the doctors from thereafter was done via phone call, but she kept me informed of his condition and was completely kind & transparent with me every step of the way. The diagnostic tests revealed that hed definitely be needing major surgery, and she gave me an overview of what thatd entail as well as the costs involved. After that, I paid half the estimate and headed home, hoping for the best. The next morning, the surgeon (Dr. Hyndman) called us letting us know of his condition as well as more details about the surgery. He also gave us a call right before and right after his surgery, which was quite comforting. The next day we got a call letting us know he was all set to be discharged, and he also provided us with detailed info about post-op care. Weve also received another follow-up call a couple of days after the discharge, just to check in on how our cat was recovering and to answer any further questions we might have. Seriously amazing!!TL;DR: I cant thank everyone at AMC enough. Everyone I spoke to—the receptionists, triage nurse, emergency vet, and surgeons—were so kind to us and completely transparent throughout the whole process. Having this happen to our cat was stressful enough, but I couldnt have asked for a better medical team for our kitty. Highly recommended!!
Our pup, Roscoe, was diagnosed with a brain tumor a little more than a year ago. Dr. St. Vincent and the entire oncology team from doctors, to assistants, to receptionists were incredibly professional, caring and responsive. I often sent late night emails with questions/concerns while Roscoe was undergoing radiation treatment. The team always responded super promptly. The security guards warmly greeted us each morning and afternoon during daily treatments. They took an interest which made it emotionally easier to drop Roscoe off each day; it felt like everyone cared for him. Roscoe has been thriving and we continue to appreciate every day with him. Thank you AMC!!!
I am happy they saved my puppys life, but this place is very expensive and not for the low paying working class. I personally feel as if they took advantage of my emotions to make me sign up for the Wells Fargo credit to put a down payment down for my dogs overnight care. I appreciate the ability to pay AMCNY back in increments but honestly, does it have to be so expensive? And, is there not a way to make a deal to pay less money for services. I cannot see myself coming back here again. They are very professional though. Just be ready to pay A LOT of money for any ER emergency overnight care.
Expensive on all ends ,its a business for them. They do not genuinely care for the well being of the animal. Paid good money to see and internal medicine doctor but ended up with a resident that took x-rays send me home with a medicine that cost 48 bucks that Ive paid 27.00 before somewhere else. End result was that now they want to perform a fluoroscopy to get a better view at a VERY expensive cost. So Im still where Ive begun I know nothing.
I want to say thank you to everyone who helped me with my emergency situation for my Senior dog Buddy. They took the emergency seriously and brought him in for emergency surgery for his sepsis/ septic shock. I believe it is Dr.Hyndman the ER surgical resident who I’ve been speaking to who has been nothing but kind and compassionate for my puppy. He and the amazing technicians and ER doctors saved his life.Yes AMC is expensive but you’re paying for quality care and an emergency service, so of course it’s not going to be like going to your family vet.
False hope about my dog. My dog was on bed rest for nothing, and still not able to walk after 4 weeks. I was told my dog should walking in two, or after 4 weeks. Then, I was told it was going to take a long time. My dog is going to need a wheelchair now. Dont even get me started about the waiting room smh.
I was so impressed with this establishment. We never expected to receive news that our 16 week old puppy had a heart defect and will only have months left to live. Dr. Bond and her team were wonderful and sensitive from the beginning. My puppy was receiving medical care within minutes of arriving, and they called us twice a day to keep us up to date with his heath status. I felt that they genuinely cared about our dog and situation. I would wholeheartedly recommend the AMC to anyone seeking emergency and specialized medical care.
In summary: excellent care but time consuming and can be expensiveWe initially reached out to AMC in April because they have a dental x ray and a dentistry department. Leo’s situation was a little complicated due to having multiple concurrent dental issues but we felt that Jade was very helpful in providing us with the most optimal solutions. We would’ve had to wait until at least October/November to get a dental consult appointment OR to schedule a dental procedure. While we didn’t feel Leo’s issues were of immediate urgency, we didn’t want to wait that many months before getting him seen. Jade suggested we make an appointment for a general exam and they could assess from there. Leo was seen by Dr. Roswell that day and she was lovely. She tried to give us the best picture possible of his diagnoses and how to move forward from there. Pricing was transparent and I never have a problem with this no matter where I go. If no one brings it up to tell you, it should be your responsibility to ask. However, the wait was definitely long considering a general exam as compared with going to our regular vet. We were promptly scheduled to have Leo’s dental scheduled with Dr. Martel later in the month. Because Leo’s exam was squeezed into Dr. Martel’s day, one thing to note was that there was a lot of confusion with the rest of the staff at AMC. They asked us to come at 8:20 am and onward for drop off, but we actually arrived early (~ 8 AM) not knowing Dr. Martel doesn’t come in until 9 AM! Leo despises being in the carrier, so I did not want to leave him inside AMC alone knowing the doctor wasn’t even there yet. I wish I had known that beforehand, rather than finding out when I got there. Of course, I did not expect Dr. Martel to call me the second he stepped foot into work, so we ended up waiting quite a while. Dr. Martel was a pleasure to speak to as he was thorough and patient. He was also transparent with the pricing, giving me a potential range of the outcome of Leo’s procedure. He did not call me during the procedure but did remove 2 additional teeth than we had originally anticipated. At that moment, I had expected him to call me but then later realized no doctor is going to call you in the middle of a procedure unless it is a life changing decision. The final bill for the procedure fell into the range that was initially quoted. Pick up/discharge took a very, very long time. They told me Leo was ready to go home after 3:30 pm so I got there at 4 PM. It took 30+ minutes for them to call me inside to pay, at which point they called to release Leo. I waited another 30+ minutes before they called me to get him. Basically, Leo’s procedure was a full day outing. We received a follow up call the next day, and I even emailed Dr. Martel a week after surgery to ask for his help regarding our Trupanion claim in which he promptly responded to. Communication with the doctors were excellent but lacking with the rest of the staff. They also have different departments so it’s difficult to know who I needed to speak with. While the cost is reasonable for the work they do, expect to pay more here for the same done elsewhere. The long wait times are inconvenient but I would definitely come back for specialty care like this. Leo is back to being himself now and hopefully that resolves his problem. Thank you AMC!
UPDATE: Our initial appointment was for an ultrasound, which we did not receive. The doctor talked with my wife for 5 minutes and listened to our dogs heartbeat. Were now being charged $210 for this expert consultation. Avoid this scam of a business. And if youre questioning a bill, and you hear from Liana, just give up. Shes not going to actually listen to anything you have to say, or answer any of your questions. Dont waste your time.My wife brought our dog here for a full bladder ultrasound today. After being there for 2 hours, she ultimately had to leave without the ultrasound because our dog was losing her mind.I understand this is also an emergency clinic, but they need to be better staffed and far more communicative to the people who have appointments.
Too damn expensive!..... My kittys visit cost more than myvisit to my doctor...($500.00 )And on top of that, they tried to get me tobuy their medicine that cost $200 dollars a bottle compared to my local Pharmacy where i paid $10 dollars for one monthsupply of the prescribed medicine.....I will never go backto get exploited again.
I have been taking my spaniel to AMC since he was a puppy. He is almost 10 now. Last week I brought my dog Zeus to the ER at AMC very late in the evening. He was throwing up blood, couldn’t stand, hunched back and very shallow breathing. I had no idea what was wrong. Obviously in great distress, I thought he was on the verge of dying. Not something any loving dog owner wants to see. I waited in the parking lot at AMC for someone to triage him for over an hour, and was told at that point it would be longer. I tried in vain to contact dr.Douglas Palma who had been Zeus’ vet since he was a puppy. Palma was working that night and didn’t have the decency to respond or get involved. He eventually emailed me to tell me “sorry I didn’t see this”. This has become his standard reply. When my other spaniel had a botched neutering this summer upstate, I reached out to Palma in the middle of an agonizing night, w pictures of the dogs testicles that were the size of softballs. Eventually I received the same response days later. “Sorry I didn’t see this”.Well you know what Dr. Palma - I’m sorry but I will never subject my dogs to your lack of care or compassion again. After spending tens of thousands of dollars over the years at AMC, I will never return. They have lost their sense of compassion and treat dogs like mere statistics. Instead of trying to figure out what was wrong with Zeus through detective work, the attending physician gave him $700 of tests that ruled out nothing and sent me home with no instructions on diet or what symptoms to watch for.Do yourself a huge favor. Find a local vet that you trust and avoid AMC. I used to defend AMC to the multiple dog owners I met over the years in NYC because almost everyone I met had a similar negative experience. Now I know why they were so critical.
It is every pet owners nightmare to see your pet in distress and not be able to help them. When our dog collapsed in front of us and had difficulty breathing, the first thing we did was look for the nearest pet hospital and rush there; it so happened that the nearest was the AMC. The day before, our puppy ran out of a fenced backyard. We spent about 15 minutes looking for him, and when we found him, he had a bruise and scratches above his eye but his overall condition seemed okay. We decided to let him rest and bathed him, and he was fine for the evening and even ate dinner normally. The next morning however, the disaster happened, and he suddenly collapsed; several minutes after he was admitted to the hospital, I received a call from the nurse. I told her every single detail of what had happened the day before, however, she was uninterested, and her questions were not related to the prior accident. For several hours, no one seemed to be concerned with the accident or the injuries he sustained, and instead all we heard was “He will die, but you need to leave him at the hospital.” I kept asking for someone to come out and talk to us about his condition and what happened and what they were doing, but every request was ignored. I understand to a degree, with COVID, stress, strict measures in place, etc., but the situation was extraordinary. We were told our dog would in fact die, and all the while no one was able to tell us the reason for his condition. After repeatedly hearing that my dog would die, I lost it and demanded my dog to be given back to me so I could get care elsewhere. The doctor replied that I had to sign some release papers, and that police would probably have to check on us due to my dog’s injuries (bruise and scratches). INJURIES!!! All of a sudden, they remembered about his injuries!!!! Instead of papers, we actually had to meet cops, right there in the parking lot of the hospital! I mean COPS!!!! At the end, our dog was moved to a different facility, but for the whole day the hospital was lying to us about the location of our pet. I mean…, can you even imagine??? First your dog collapses and the hospital says, adamantly and without giving any reason, that he is going to die. And then they brand you an animal abuser and call cops on you!!! We were crying our eyes out in the parking lot, and even the other patients seemed confused and disturbed by the fact we had police investigating us on the spot instead of giving us an answer as to what happened to our poor dog! And what’s worse is that we are not the only “lucky ones.” It appeared that my friend had a similar situation at this same place! The hospital was forcing her to let them amputate her chinchilla’s paw and threatening to call the cops if she refused. Thank god, she managed to get her pet out of there and took them to another hospital where he was treated carefully and all he needed was a cast, not an amputation!I’m not even going to mention the CT scan results that were never read, or the contradictory diagnoses (ranging from “he is going to die tonight” to “it was just an episode”, and also “it happens in plenty of small dogs”). When your animal is in distress, you are ready to run anywhere for help. Just don’t let AMC be your “anywhere.” Be mindful! And for the hospital, please reconsider how you interact with the parents of your patients and some of your policies.
Dr. Covo and and the rest of the team were absolutely fantastic. I brought my cat Mac in with a urinary blockage and was completely beside myself, but from the first moment everyone was so helpful and compassionate. Once he was admitted Dr. Covo called me with updates twice a day and was incredibly kind while still keeping me up to speed on all of the clinical details. The whole time I felt like Mac was in very good hands.Things like this are never cheap but overall their prices were quite fair. I really appreciated the fact that they kept me well informed about the cost at every point before moving forward with any new treatment.Overall I was very impressed by the quality of care AMC provided. I would recommend them to anyone.
I am not sure what has happened in terms of quality over the years at AMC, but I am now looking to transfer my dogs care so that I will not need to depend on this place any longer.Every single month I have an issue filling my dogs prescription (for which the vet says he cannot miss a dose of). Just today I am on day 5 of attempting to get the authorization for 1800PETMEDS to send my the meds. This is not a single issue, it happens every single month. There are days where you will never be able to get through to anyone on the phone, transferred to wrong departments, hung up on or just left on hold on for a seeminlgy infinite amount of time.Aside from that, my dog has gone through 4 vets now as they are all residents who move on and I have re-explain my dogs liver issues and specialized care. The residents are great and they care very much about the animals, but the processes and clerical staff just cant keep up or dont care to with the volume of clients. I am over it.
My very good boy cat received care and comfort as he declined due to a failing heart and an aggressive cancer. Dr. Kharbush and the cardiology teams skills and their coordination with the other teams was exceptional and I was communicated with at every step: each treatment option was explained to me with great diligence and all pricing involved was clear and up front so I was able to make our best choices for our situation. And compassion: They made the loneliest decision I have ever had to make a bit less so. My gratitude is abundant. In light of some of the other comments here, I wish to add my voice to the qualitative data set: from our first visit to the emergency room at 1am a month ago to the subsequent visits and phone calls, and the last visit, I was struck that the four highly trained medical experts I interacted with also happened to be highly adept at having these difficult and sensitive conversations with me, as well as being administrative whizzes. I am not from the U.S., and maybe I got really, really lucky, but just sayin: that is a big and varied job.
I originally had a 5 star review based on my initial visit but have changed it. While the initial visit was great, the service went down hill from there. The main reason I changed my review though is because of the last visit. I brought my dog in for an emergency visit as I noticed her eye was very red. (she had a cataract already and we had surgery scheduled in about a month). They took my dog away and did tests and said she was fine. One month later when we actually went to do the surgery at Cornell hospital, she had glaucoma and they could no longer operate on the the eye. The doctor told me that given the size of the eye, the pressure had been building up for some time. I dont know how they could have missed that. Perhaps my dog did not have pressure build up when I brought her in but I could not in all good conscious recommend the hospital for eye care.
Every animal lover is not rich especially during these times. I needed care for my cat who looked as if he is about to just die. I actually get paid tomorrow morning direct deposit the receptionist told me I couldn’t come unless I had money. If hospital don’t turn human patients away, how dare a animal hospital turn an animal patient away. Treatment first work out payment later. I would always pay for my cat.
My cat had an emergency one night and I took her to BluePearl as it was closest. Didnt like the experience at BP, very hasty examination (5 mins) and was quickly handed a bill of $1,300 for all the recommended tests. AND was charged $185 for the 5 mins exam/emergency run in which they didnt do anything...Anyways, a week later, my cat needed another emergency visit and my choices were to have another repeat of BP or try AMC entirely new.I decided to give the benefit of the doubt and go to AMC.The experience the next 2 days at AMC really wowed me and I couldnt be happier with my decision to go to somewhere new. Im so glad I have now found a great vet to take my kitty God forbid anything else happens in the future. From the start, the AMC nurses and vets were very knowledgeable and moved quickly to tend to my cat and her condition. The unfortunate thing about AMC is that its probably more cost-friendly so theres much more people here. At BP, I was the only customer in the waiting area in the middle of the night, compared to maybe 10 others at AMC the same time on that particular day. However, they seemed to have everything in order still and much staff on hand.Throughout it all, I was extremely impressed with AMC - the nurses and the vets. Very attentive, caring, knowledgeable, warm & friendly, and oh my, the vet must have called me 4x that day when my cat was being performed on for all these tests, to always keep me updated. A nurse gave me a call in the morning to update me on her overnight status. The vet called later to ask for permission to conduct Echocardiogram. The vet called again after performing the Echocardiogram and to inform me shes going to put her under anesthesia. She called in the afternoon again to give me the results from the tests and inform me her status after anesthesia. AND when my cat was discharged and I went to pick her up, she saw me in person at her office to go over everything and answered every question I had. Super duper attentive I couldnt believe it, yet I was SO touched by the love and care, and how meticulous AMC personnel were and the assurance they gave me that my kitty was in great hands. I really appreciated the constant updates, otherwise Id be having a panic attack hahaha.*Shoutout to the awesome vet I had - Dr. Elizabeth Appleman of Internal Medicine!! Shes absolutely the the THE BEST and most caring vet Ive ever had, and Ive been to more than 7 or 8 already. Shes the one that constantly kept me updated throughout the day and this whole ordeal. Even after my cat has been discharged from the hospital and about a week later, we received an email from Dr. Appleman to give us the biopsy results and to ask about my cats condition since. Very caring!Of course, I dont expect every vet and nurse at AMC to be as attentive as I had, but at least the overall experience there was great and a huge relief. At least everything I experienced and witnessed there, including other patients and their families, all around me I saw love and that was very touching, that people arent working there just for a job, but for love and passion.Highly recommend Animal Medical Center. Their prices and rates were also much more reasonable than BP, especially for the amazing service youre getting.
I recommend the AMC to anyone looking for a center filled with compassionate, caring and understanding staff. Dr. Kopec is hands down one of the best vets I have encountered. My visit took a total of an hour and fifteen minutes!I took my five year old pup to a local vet due to his deteriorating health. After bloodwork was drawn and tested, I found out that he had multiple complications, and was advised to take him to another pet hospital in my area, to see if they could provide the care that he needed. Unfortunately, the vet at the second location declined to treat my pup. After doing extensive research I decided to take Toby to the Animal Medical Center to receive a third opinion. Deep down I knew that things did not look good and could ultimately lead to the worst possible outcome- euthanasia. Due to COVID, I was the only person allowed into the center. The process to check went smoothly. I waited for a very brief time (less than 15 minutes), and was called into a triage room. The nurse examined Toby, and then went to consult with the doctor. Dr. Brianna Kopec then called me after reviewing the bloodwork that was drawn earlier in the week. Toby had lyme disease and was in end stage renal failure amongst other things.Dr. Kopec was thorough and explained what each part of the lab results indicated. Unfortunately, Toby was too sick and would require intensive treatment that would cost an arm and a leg. I also did not think that he should undergo such a long, extenuating treatment knowing that his quality of life would no longer be how it was before his health took a turn for the worse. Dr. Kopec said that the decision was up to me, after having laid out the options. I made the decision to have Toby euthanized- he was such a wonderful dog, emotionally supportive during the most difficult times in my life.It was not easy to make this decision-it absolutely breaks my heart that we had to go down that road. Dr. Kopec explained the procedure and was kind and compassionate. It was hard to see him go, but I knew it was for the best.Thank you to everyone at the AMC, especially Dr. Kopec. I wish you well in your future endeavors.
So I went to take my rabbit here to be seen for emergency and 3 to 4 other people brought their animals after me. Explain how all of them were seen before me? No explanation, no call from a vet, nothing. I was left to wait 1 hour while everyone else got a call within 15 to 20 minutes. I left and took my rabbit somewhere else since they didnt want to see her. Will not be going here again.
I feel like a lot of the negative reviews for Animal Medical Center focus a lot on practices that are common and necessary for all animal hospitals. Emergency rooms generally mean you will be waiting especially if your pet is in stable condition and paying 300 for urgent care is pretty standard. Just compare that to going to the ER yourself without insurance. We had a really great experience here. Our dog started vomiting uncontrollable and had very bloody diarrhea and was taken in by a nurse immediately who was very gentle and kind. She was seen by an on-call intern about 20 minutes later (which is pretty standard if not fast) and the vet was awesome. She gave us many different choices for diagnosis and treatment and explained all of the pricing upfront and told us what she thought the best course of action was. She spent a lot of time with us explaining these options and seemed to really care about the well-being of our dog. Dr. Chou and nurse/ front desk assistant that I cant remember because I was frantic when I came in, thank you so much for taking great care of Pegi!
Hands down the best care available. Access to dentists, neurologists, and every specialty that exists all under one roof. MRI machines and the latest technology. Open 24/7 and an absolute godsend in an emergency. The doctors are compassionate and easily accessible just like your local vet. They keep in regular contact with you when your pet is admitted to the hospital to update you on your pets condition. They follow up with you after your pet is released. You do not have to chase them down. We recently had to put a pet to sleep, and they went above and beyond to make sure we had what we needed emotionally, answering 1000 questions, allowing as much time as you need to say goodbye to your pet in private. Theyll do pretty much whatever you want to help you cope with difficult situations. You can expect to pay more here than you would at your local vet, but personally I dont mind, knowing that I am getting the best possible care and I dont need to wonder if I need to get a second opinion, or run all over town with a sick pet to get the care we need. I dont mind paying a little more to support this wonderful hospital.
This place is excellent. If your pet is having an emergency, I highly recommend coming here. Last night our chihuahua was having an allergic reaction and so we brought her at the recommendation of our usual vet who was closed. They saw her immediately and everyone we spoke to was kind, helpful, and attentive. Their prices were very reasonable and below the cost of a typical vet in the neighborhood.
THEY KILLED MY DOG DUE TO MISDIAGNOSIS AND NO COMMUNICATION. these vets are horrible and only care about money. they don’t allow you to go with your pet to the examination as if our pets can speak for themselves. They gave my dog loads of medication he did not need to jack up the price and then did not give me an itemized receipt. They forced him to walk on a broken leg and he fell over. he was elderly and needed urgent care and all they did was make his situation worse and charge us so much money. they diagnosed him with heart disease and refused pain medication due to this, turned out he never had heart disease and could’ve been on proper pain medication. then they gave him the wrong prescription. due to their failures my dog was in so much pain and his condition worsened and we were forced to put him down. DO NOT TAKE YOUR PETS HERE!!! try emergency veterinary group! but don’t take them here.
Took my 5mo old Labrador puppy here the other night for a really bad gagging/cough she had. We were there from 12am-4:30am. They ended up just recommending Benadryl. Flash forward to two days and another ER visit (elsewhere) where she was properly diagnosed with kennel cough (even though she has the bordetella vaccine). This place totally missed the boat in diagnosing my puppy. Zero confidence in them. Will not return or recommend.
I love this institution, with which I have a lot of experience. The veterinary care is first class. And everybody at the place is just so nice, friendly and caring, from the doctors to the nurses to the receptionists.AMC is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for emergencies, and its also a great place (though not inexpensive) for your pets regular veterinary care. To sum up, when I visit and see the knowledge, cutting-edge research and compassion dedicated to the care of other species, I feel better about ours.
I commend this place for its state-of-the-art technology, the loving vets and aides and the understanding of immediacy. Having a sick dog that has lived and continues to live a full and happy life is due to AMC. We tried several private vets, which misdiagnosed or refused to treat the dog. AMC knew what needed to be done and continues treatment. I will agree that the price of treatment is high, but we have not found it substantially higher than many incompetent private vets. And, the love our dog gives us is worth all the money in the world. (PS: get medical insurance and the bills will not be so painful.)
This has been the worst experience in all 10 years with my dog. I brought her in for dental extractions. Dr. Riback was fake and arrogant from day one. I should have trusted my gut and went with someone else. He was so rough he basically butchered my 4 pound Yorkie. Her mouth is drooping preventing her from moving her tongue and she has been traumatized ever since. I tried emailing him and he never responded. I didn’t even get a follow up call after the surgery to see how she was doing. When I asked him he said they were understaffed and busy. After spending $3,000 I would expect a much higher level of care. Later found out he isn’t even board certified. How could someone who has been practicing so long not even pass his boards after multiple times. It’s a disgrace that someone like this is allowed to treat animals. I don’t know what went on there but she’s had this procedure before by a regular vet for 1/3 the cost and she was fine. Dr. Martel does seem more competent but I will never go back. AMC is more concerned with making money then the care of their animals. Go to Blue Pearl Dr. Gibeon is the best.
The Staff at Animal Medical Center has been treating our elderly terrier for kidney issues and basically saved her life and has prolonged it with a good quality of life. It can get a little busy in the waiting room but to be fair they handle a lot of clients. Their dispensary provides good / fair prices for prescriptions. We shopped around and moved one compound prescription to a local pharmacy. (AMC doesnt do compounding in house, but the firm they recommended was a bit high). The only soft criticism I have is that they can provide Cadillac health care options which they offer but you can select and choose what you want to pursue.Vet costs in NYC are pretty high everywhere.
Worst experience EVER! I took my 1 year old dog there Saturday after an emergency prolapsed urethra. My dog could not urinate and I was told he needed surgery as soon as possible. They said I would be contacted within 24 hours to schedule an appointment. When trying to schedule numerous people told me different things: their computers were down, scheduling people do not work on the weekends, they were booked until August, etc. I asked to speak to the doctor my dog saw and they told me she doesn’t work on the weekends. Well that is odd seeing as she saw my dog a few hours before! They charged me over $1,000 and made sure I paid but gave me ZERO answers. I was very upset and was assured they would contact me by Sunday afternoon but keep an eye out because if my dog didn’t urinate his bladder may burst. Well, Sunday night when I did not hear I took him somewhere else. When the vet looked at the pills amc gave me we noticed 2 pills were NOT the prescribed pills in the bottle. What they were who knows? A woman called Tuesday to tell me his urine results and that they would be calling to schedule his surgery most likely for July 28th. Thats THREE weeks from the 24 hour mark I was promised. When I told the woman on the phone about the random pills mixed in the bottle she did not apologize just said “okay,” and abruptly hung up. How this place is still able to practice is beyond me HORRIBLE human beings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
10 STARS ⭐️I am so grateful to the Emergecy Room @ Animal Medical Center. My little guy had been bitten really bad from a much larger dog, and just when I thought I was going to lose my best friend, they did everything to assure he made it back home. Once you get there, they take your little one right in for immediate care. I mean the first 24 hours, I was shattered not knowing what to expect and they were so responsive. The Doctors were very thorough and answered all my questions. Simba received the best care that I can possible give him. After a few days they sent him home with medication and we are so happy and blessed to have him home with us.
I had a terrible experience at the AMC Ny. I was misled by their staff to trust that the cardiologist himself would see my dog for a $1,000 ultrasound appointment. Instead, his student performed the test, while I waited helplessly in their parking lot. I was not allowed to even speak to the Cardiologist himself until I complained to multiple people. When I finally spoke to Dr. Fox, he rudely told me he was ‘multitasking’ and “this is a teaching hospital, students perform most of the tests”. Then he rushed me off the phone.I was stuck in New York during COVID and I booked this appointment in NY because I could not travel to LA to see my dogs normal Cardiologist.I am flying to LA this week and will be paying another $1,000 to have a professional cardiologist perform the needed ultrasound.I have contacted the hospital three times regarding this issue, and have heard nothing.
This place basically robbed me... the doctor did nothing to help my dog with his problem, he needed urgent help we were desperate so we came to this hospital but it was a huge mistake. the doctor told me straight to my face i can not to anything to help him with his pooping problem. i spend $500 that night for what?.. my dog instead of pooping out normally he began pooping blood. my dog is thankfully fine today because i received urgent help from a different doctor who saved my dogs life. because the doctor at this hospital wouldve left my dog to die.P.S after reading all these reviews.. this hospital is 100% A$$.
This hospital does NOT care about your Pets.I took our 6 month old puppy he had fallen and he broke his leg. The X-ray which was ($270.99) which was only 1 confirmed it indeed was broken. The “Doctor” which we later found out was an INTERN Dr. Sindumani Manoharan was so cold, rude and rushed us, she did NOT even look at our puppy she went straight to the computer and began to tell us that we have to pay $4500.00 minimum right away and that our puppy had to stay overnight for surgery. We asked to speak to surgeon and asked to see our puppy and she said it was not a good idea. Something did not sit well with us and I did not trust her or this money hungry hospital and I asked to take our puppy home and bring him to his regular hospital which is amazing (Harlem Animal Hospital) the next morning. The “Dr” brought out our puppy with a splint bandage and practically threw him in my arms as I was settling the bill at the front desk. He was scared and very drugged so I wanted to settle bill quickly and bring him home to care for him until the next day.The Bill for this visit was $1,010.22This was for an X-ray, the visit and the splint.Upon returning home I notice that they had shaved my puppy’s other leg.I looked at my bill and there were over $400 of things they did that was for his intended surgery which I did not approve of at all. They charged me for a catheter, and Istat chem 8 and a blood Gas test.ALL false tests that were not needed for a splint.I called several times later to resolve and ask questions to no help.Super long story shorter- Our pup was taken to his regular primary care vet and then upon recvomwndation to Blue Pearl to see a an othropedic surgeon. He is now in a cast he Did NOT have surgery as a cast was an option the surgeon gave us...and yes Blue Pearl is pricey as well but not as bad BUT they truly are 5 star service. I will highly recommend Blue Pearl or Harlem animal hospital. Amazing places that care for your pet.Not like AMC which seems all they are interested is money and not your furry babies.STAY AWAY FROM THIS HOSPITAL!They are expensive for no reasonThey do NOT care for your animals
Services are fine but beware of billing. While it takes weeks to see your dogs community practice vet for a weekend visit, highly recommend their services. Where I take issue is with the billing department. Double check your credit card statements. I went for my dog’s check up in December 2019 and when I went to pay, I swiped my CC through the card reader only to be told there was a system outage, however, I got the payment alert on my phone. I was assured it was not paid on their end despite what my phone said. I did not have the leisure of waiting another thirty minutes to an hour for their system to be back up and running so I left my card information and later saw another charge. I was dismayed to see in my monthly card statement two charges. When I disputed with AMC, they had the audacity to tell me I still owed the balance of my December visit. I had to dispute the charge with Amex who removed one of the duplicated charges but AMC was a nightmare to deal with. Constant back and forth emails with no responses. Fast forward to July 2020, I was eventually able to get this resolved. I ultimately paid twice for services but wanted this billing issue to be done with. A slight consolation was getting the late fees waived (despite emails and calls asking for updates). The whole labyrinth of billing and lack of communication from AMC left a terrible blemish on otherwise exemplary services and certainly makes me question past payments.*Update: the response from owner comment is laughable. I’ve escalated my issues and concerns a multitude of times (through phone and email) only to have it go unaddressed (and continue to accrue late fees). I already raised it to their ClientSatisfactionTeam months prior to this review. Spoiler alert: this does not achieve anything! I should not have to follow up to rectify a billing issue several times yet when I need to pay them, I am easily directed to someone straight away.
I went to this place with Dog .coughing and gagging Dr. Told me emergency it $210.00 and then the Vet Dr. called me at my cell saying he needed to take an X-rays of my Dog chest and told it $300.00 and i said if is necessary i agreed with the amount $510.00 that will be the total amount .after that when my dog was ready they make sure i pay the $510.00 to let him out of the room and then gave a bill of over a thousand that i could not pay then when i sign up the payment agreement they let my Dog come out . I ask them why it was so much ? because of the medicine $373.00 for antibiotic that i check the price and it was only $30.00and the other medicine for coughing $ 170.00 and that was only $16.00they overcharged me for the medicine . and the things is my Dog did not get better. i have to take him to another Vet.
My cat is extremely aggressive and nasty with vets, and everyone I met at the hospital dealt with her very compassionately (highly unusual compared to the regular vets weve been to). The doctors took adequate time in discussing things with me. It took about 3 hours from triage to checkout on a Tuesday night (right after Christmas) for sedation, urine draw and X-rays - with lab tests & antibiotics it came to $670. $170 of that was the emergency fee. The prescription was filled on-site and the waiting area was clean with efficient and friendly receptionists. So far the antibiotics seem to be working for her; overall I am quite relieved to have a 24 hour vet nearby which I feel comfortable bringing my pet to for care.
They killed my dog. They’re all about $$$ and everyone there is unqualified. If you love your pet don’t bring them here. They also don’t show you anything they’re doing to your pets and make you wait behind closed door. They killed my dog and gave him injections without my consent. They did that so they can charge me more on my bill. They’re crooks. DO NOT GO HERE ITS ALSO NONPROFIT- think of all the rich people that back this hospital up. They’re a mafia
Dr. Kennedy and Dr. Macdougall performed a leg amputation on my 18 year old cat who has cancer. They are not only flawless medical surgeons, they are incredible people. They went at my pace and explained and rexplained things to me without irritation...and that grounded me. They went through my back and forth decision making process and never made me feel I was failing or not able to handle things. They even checked in first thing the morning after she came home and throughout the surgery day.Pittens came home calm! I have taken her to other places where her reaction has been distressed. She came back without a whole leg. with brightness and full health.I feel so indebted and grateful to this teamI must say every single person I met there from the doctors, to the front desk, to the concierge were more than human.... they saved her and they taught me vakuable lessons in humanity and that there is good and people do care. After trying to find even a vet during covid and meeting people who did not care and surgeons such as at Blue Pearl in Brooklyn who never responded to emails for 3 weeks vets giving me only 3 days of pain meds when 30 was needed (and not responding till Monday without an apology)....I appreciate AMC....and even if those experiences had been good...AMC would have still have had the same impact on me.If you need help for your pet, go here. I wish they were all my doctors too. That is how phenomneal this entire hospital is.To surgery oncology department.....thank you will never be enough.
...Five stars -- if youre rich -- otherwise ONE!We brought our seriously ill cat to the center today. We were seen immediately, the reception staff was friendly and compassionate. The doctor came promptly and gave us a diagnosis. We were told that our cat should be admitted and hydrated, as well as have some tests done. We did not have the recommended amount (we were told to apply for at least $5,000 credit, which would include a lot of interest), so we asked if she could at least stay overnight so she could get hydrated just until we could get her to her vet appointment the next day. Although the doctor told us that our cat might pass away in the night, she advised against having her overnight, since we did not have the $1,500 that we would need to pay for nothing more than a fluid i.v.So we had to take our poor cat back on the subway without treatment, turned away from the AMC because we did not have enough money. We called the Humane Society, and we were told that they could offer the same treatment overnight for $40! Though they are not staffed 24 hours, the difference in price was remarkable, and has made it possible to save the life of our beloved friend. Thank goodness that some institutions actually provide affordable health care rather than simply advertising themselves as helping those with lower incomes, while running a high-end clinic for the wealthy or desperate.
The Animal Medical Center has provided the most outstanding care that I have ever seen! The doctors called me, 3 times a day day or night to update the progress and surgery report for my dog. I felt like life is precious for all the doctors at the center, each life, let it be dogs or humans. They were compassionate, knowledgeable, explaining everything to me in details, the prognosis and the chances of my dogs recovery. They were honest and told me my dog has only 70% of recovery after surgery. In no way I felt pressured into any decisions, but rather supported with whatever decision I would make. They offered all resources for us, when we could not have done that on our own. My younger brother, my family and I are forever grateful for saving life of our dog Monica. When we came in the blizzard night to the emergency room, with our precious family member Monica, a 9 year old Chiweenie we were taken in a few minutes into the cabinet, the nurses assisted her(Monica) while I was filling our documents. The compassion, understanding have touched my heart, of the nurses, interns, doctors, staff and all medical personal. May God bless the work you are doing!I agree with the statement on your wall, we cannot change the world, but we can change the world for one animal and the life of the owner.
The staff here had amazing amounts of knowledge and integrity. A lot of vets and animal hospitals will perform unnecessary procedures to pump up the bill. We brought our dog in and was told hed probably need surgery. He got a chest x ray to prepare for an MRI. They watched him for 24 hours and determined he didnt need the MRI or surgery. They refunded the cost of the chest x ray because the MRI was deemed unnecessary as they watched him. Im sure most animal hospitals would have just done the mri because they could and its easy money.
This place only cares about money. My girlfriend took her dog here to get hip surgery and they charged her 17k. She had to pay half up front. Just take a moment to process that? How is that right? Her dog just had hip surgery again on the other side and her regular vet only charged 2500. This place takes advantage of the situation because its an emergency that is insane. I read some reviews about owners having to lose their dogs because this medical center would not negotiate or give a reasonable price and its honestly disgusting. I also noticed the owner does not respond to negative reviews 🤔🤔...very, very interesting !!
Saved our puppies life with surgery for his serious life threatening birth defect. It was more expensive than a regular vet or surgeon but that’s what you pay for having some of the best veterinary doctors in the world look after your pet. It’s very hectic when you get there because of so many emergencies so be prepared to wait if it’s not truly a life threatening emergency. Yes we spent a bunch of money here but the surgery went flawlessly the cost was way less than they quoted and we are extremely happy our puppy will have a long life now! Thank you to dr. Lisa bazzle and dr fieri for saving our dogs life!
Horrible institution with great medical care. When my dog needed a pacemaker and developed a blood clot in her leg, they managed to make the situation even more traumatic and stressful. They lied (from the top down: CEO Kathryn Coyne told me my healthy dog shouldnt have been at AMC as they were triaging dogs for the flu in the lobby and, when I asked why no one had warned me and requested that AMC pay for a prophylactic flu shot for the dog, denied having said that), twisted facts (I said very calmly to the head of customer relations, This is in no way a threat, but your customer service is so awful that it would make a completely non-homicidal person feel like murdering half your staff, and Coyne told me that my threat had been reported to the police), and offered zero customer service or assistance, despite charging about $15,000 in fees. My dogs ER doc requested that I drive to the city (three hours) to try to get her to eat; then I was thrown in a remote exam room and had to fight to get any of the assistance I needed -- wee-wee pads, different types of food to try, a paper cup so I could get a drink of water, someone to come get the dog so I could take my other dog outside for a walk -- despite the fact that the dog was attached to an IV and in intense pain so I couldnt get up. Coynes sarcastic response: Im sorry we couldnt get you things you wanted every 15 minutes. She also said that visits were supposed to be limited to 15 minutes, although obviously I wouldnt have driven three hours if I had been told in advance it would be a 15-minute visit, nor is it reasonable to expect that I would be able to get a critically sick animal to eat in 15 minutes. Next time I need emergency services, I will drive a little farther and go to Tufts or Cornells veterinary hospital, where they know how to treat humans as well as animals. As another customer in AMCs waiting room put it, Theyre great with dogs and not so good with people. Make that atrocious with people, and Id say spot-on. Addendum: My dog, who was dangerously ill and spent five days in the Animal Medical Centers ICU earlier this month, has made amazing strides, and I attribute that in part to the fact that I fought for her every step of the way. Yet it shouldnt have to be such a big fight to get help with simple, non-medical tasks, such as feeding the dog, which her ER doctor had requested I drive three hours to the hospital to do. It especially shouldnt have to be such a big fight when the bill is $15,000. Since Lily is doing so well, I have been having congratulatory, jubilant conversations with her cardiologist at Upstate Veterinary Specialties and her veterinarian at Lake Katrine Animal Hospital, but the cardiologist at AMC who installed Lilys pacemaker couldnt even be bothered to answer several questions I emailed to him after her surgery. This lack of responsiveness permeates every level at AMC. The only time an AMC official was truly responsive to me was when the CFO called me to collect payment over the phone via debit card so I could get my dog released from AMC and transferred by puppy ambulance to Upstate Veterinary Specialties. Once the bill was paid, the CFO, Paul Greene, promptly became impossible to reach with additional questions, such as whether he had forwarded an email detailing my issues with AMC to its board of trustees as I had requested since there is no email address for them listed on AMCs website. Addendum 2: AMC just sent me a letter saying they have terminated our client relationship -- ha, as if I would ever go there again. As well as being liars with no concept of customer service, these people are spiteful and vindictive. Funny how I had no customer-service issues with the other two animal hospitals my dog attended during her crisis, but yet, despite AMCs reputation for horrible customer service, the problem is me. The other institutions understand that when someone is under great emotional stress because their dog is suddenly gravely ill, you offer more assistance, not less.
Someone really should look into why this place is called “non-profit” and is not paying taxes while charging 4 times the regular vet prices for an exam. They took a needle sample of a lump, leaving the wound completely open (really worried of infection now), did not disclose any fees beforehand or get a consent from me to perform any type of procedure, and in the end just charged me for all of it. Not only unethical, also very illegal. Hoping that others would read the reviews before taking their pets there, and that state veterinarian Board will take complaints against this scam seriously.
Rude staff and all they want is your money. My rat was put on antibiotics by another vet but they weren’t working. They encouraged me to come here since my regular vet didn’t have any openings and rats can quickly succumb to respiratory illness. I came to AMC and they told me there was nothing they could do - UNLESS I wanted to pay $500-$1000 to have him admitted. I told them other treatments my regular vet had done in the past without admitting him. They said they could try those things, but only if I admitted him and paid all that money IN ADDITION to the treatment. The woman who explained this to me was very rude on top of it all.
I had an OK visit here with my cat due to an emergency but I did notice that they did unnecessary x-rays just to drive up the bill. My dog has a chipped fang and Im looking to find a place that will put on a titanium cap. His vet only extracts. But after reading these reviews, Im going to keep looking. I also took notice that the response from owner is just a canned response. They really, really dont care about your pet, just the money. Im trying to figure out what they are really all about. Possibly the same scam as The North Shore Animal League?
I had an emergency with my dog and although AMC had all my info, the receptionist asked me, So how did, you hear about us? Really?!?!? My dog is extremely ill and youre asking me how I heard about AMC? I told her to please just have my dog checked in and looked at, and she said she wouldnt be able to until I answered this question. The vet tech wasnt much better, telling me that my dog was blind. My dog isnt blind. The attending vet finally showed up to speak with me after Id been waiting hours at AMC with no update. And she only showed up because I asked a different receptionist if she could please give me an update on my pet. The Vet was nice and professional, but AMC really needs to get better front desk people and vet techs. I wont be going back there. My dogs primary veterinarian suggested I use Veterinarian Emergency Services on 2nd Avenue (a block away from AMC) bc theyre good about updating people and they let you stay with your pet while theyre being treated. I hope to not have another emergency, but if I do, Im definitely not going back to AMC. AMC used to be good, but not so much anymore. I shouldve left after the receptionist asked me how I had heard about them. Its all about the $$$$ to them.
Many (but not all) of the vets who have their practice there are excellent - the top of their field and extremely dedicated. And thats why I travel a 150 mile roundtrip to see them. But the staff there has at times been stunningly incompetent -- except when it comes to billing (they do that very well). The question is, how to work with the excellent vets there without having the hospital bungle their work. Beware! To say that one has to advocate for their pet while there is an understatement. I have been let down several times, one time believe leading to the death of my young cat.Based on the experience of their vets and the sophistication of their facilities (not to mention the price tag), the AMC should be one of the leading animal hospitals in the country, but if falls short due to its incompetent service.
I took my dog to The Animal Medical Center between 7 and 8pm and couldnt believe the nonsense I was told upon my arrival. I came here because my dog was pooping blood outside while I was walking her. So I wanted to make sure that she didnt have some kind of illness.Timeline of events....1. Nurse asked me questions about my dog and why she was brought in. Because my nurse saw a very active/energetic/happy dog, she automatically assumes my dog is perfectly fine and there was no emergency. She literally told me that taking my dogs stool sample wouldnt be necessary. (RED FLAG). Why on earth would you say The stool sample doesnt really tell you much information?2. They treated my arrival as if it wasnt an emergency. I was told that I had to wait an hour and 30 minutes until the vet sees my dog. (That was too long)3. I waited for a while and was told that I still had to wait for an additional hour and a half because my dog was in stable condition. So since my dog was not lethargic or showing other critical symptoms, she shouldnt be seen right away??I dont think I will be coming back for any other emergencies with my dog. I am so glad I walked out before she saw the vet. Save your money and go some place else.
Amazing experience. I took my dog in to the emergency room when she had her tail crushed by my apartment buildings front door. The staff and docs were kind and compassionate. They took the time to explain why they would do what they did, and took the time to discuss alternatives and options. Price was quite fair which says a lot considering it was an emergency visit and in Manhattan. We opted for a payment plan too.
They are not upfront about pricing. When I called to make the appointment to check my dog they told me the service was gonna be $255. I called again to confirm the price before going to the appointment and they confirmed the price was gonna be $255. When I arrived to the appointment I told the staff member that took my dog to the veterinarian office (because of COVID I couldn’t see the veterinarian in person) that they shouldn’t do any procedure before consulting me. They ended up charging $80 more. I tried to solve the problem with the front desk personnel and they told me to call the billing department which, of course, it’s impossible to reach.Regarding the appointment, the doctor didn’t even know what was wrong with my dog.
I wish I could give more stars to this hospital. Amazing staff-clerks, assistants, and providers; very clean and organized. Recently, my husband and I had to take our 10y old dog Davy to a neurologist, after being referred by our vet. Resident Dr Olsen and attending Dr McCue worked with us on trying to get our doggie better. Unfortunately, my dogs illness was terminal, so after careful consideration, at a second visit, my husband and I had to make the hard decision of relieving his pain, forever. The dedication of the providers, their skill set and passion for their work shined through. They guided us through the process step by step. They were able to provide us with a full understanding of the suspected diagnosis, implications and possible costs before asking for our consent. We were not rushed. I would highly recommend this hospital. Sweet people, comprehensive and individualized care for your pet.
If I could give less than one star, I absolutely would. I arrived with my sister and our dog, brightened by the fact that they immediately took our little dog and were stabilizing her immediately. When the doctor called us into a room, I was in absolute shock to find out that we would have to pay $8,000 UP FRONT in order to take care of our dog. As we tried to explain to the doctor that we could not afford it and if there was a way we could have a payment plan, these heartless people just told us that there was no way to do that. Instead, the doctor offered the put our dog to sleep for the low price of $220. When we were obviously distraught by this, the doctor kept on trying to tell us that we cannot take her home because the dog was in a terrible condition. It is unbelievable that I had to lose my dog because they expected us to pay that much money up front. They will only treat you if you have the money. Take your pets elsewhere to avoid being scammed.
This place is a lifesaver for my pet. I have a 4 pound rabbit and the exotic vets at this place especially Dr. Quesenberry has saved him several times. He has chronic facial abscesses and his nasal passages slightly obstructed as a result of the chronic infections. She has performed multiple surgeries on him to clear the abscesses and his face has fully restored but he will never be 100% due to this issue.I believe the vets here have given him years of life due to the constant care and detail they give him. I highly recommend the exotic vets at this place. They care about your pet as much as you do..
I’ll keep this as short as possible. We brought in a conure through the emergency department because no appointments were available for at least a week even though we described the issue. Hours of wait. Finally a call from a non-specialist with no new information. More hours of wait and after asking for our pet back we finally get a call that she was seen. Exotics specialist says that the bird can’t eat (not true) and may die if they perform procedures to diagnose the issue more in depth. We ask that our bird be released to us with treatment and we’ll reassess in a few days. She was active, eating, drinking, and flying the morning of. They ask to administer fluids, antibiotics, and a painkiller. We agree. Hours later we get our bird back. Within 24 hours she’s dead. We watched our 21 year old conure go from mildly uncomfortable but very much herself and active to unable to perch, develop droopy lifeless wings, and ultimately die. Mind you, no follow up call ever came from the hospital until I called to find out what transpired in that emergency room. The doctor eventually called back and regurgitated that the bird couldn’t eat (again not true). She was having difficultly but still eating most foods offered but most likely didn’t eat what was offered inside the ER. We don’t know if she fell, if her wings were damaged somehow, nor do we know why so many of her feathers were torn out and/or broken. This is a huge heartbreak, an enraging experience, and a compete disappointment with the “care” our pet received. Highly recommend that you take your birds someplace else 💔
I had to take my cat here at 10PM at night for an emergency. I was helped right away and my cat was taken for examination within 10 minutes of arriving. The veterinarian kept me informed the entire time and gave me an update every 10 - 15 minutes. What I loved is that they gave me different options for treatment. The staff was friendly and understood my concerns. The final bill also wasnt as much as I would have expected for an emergency visit.
These wonderful people helped me save a turtle. I encountered the turtle in the hands of a family who had caught it fishing in the Haarlem Meer in Central Park. The poor turtle had a fishing hook in its mouth which they were trying to pull out with pliers. I took the turtle to the AMC where they were quick to remove the hook and give the turtle antibiotics. I was able to release the turtle into its home pond just an hour later. They did not charge me so I will make a donation to this compassionate team.
Thank you for AMC doctors and stuff for working hard during the coronavirus pandemic. The lady at outside check in was always so nice to me. I appreciate her hard work.Dr. Slade took exceptional care of my dog, Vegas and prolonged her life. He is respectful, honest, empathetic doctor. Thank you very much for being kind and compassionate.I recommend AMC. This place will give excellent care for animals
I can not believe the level of courtesy and care this facility extended to me and my family when our small dog was having an allergic reaction. It didn’t matter what the time was (it was midnight) the staff was alert, helpful, caring, and overall very knowledgeable. What a blessing it was to have a facility like this in the neighborhood when we were unable to administer our own benadryl for an allergic reaction. Our normal vet’s office had closed but thanks to AMC we were able to see our baby back to good health.
We took our dog to some of the best vets in New York, including one of the worlds most highly regarded specialists in his field and AMC as consistently taken the best care and showed the most concern about the dog. Emails are responded to promptly (including late in the evening) and questions answered honestly and quickly. After dealing with vets who either refuse to give email addresses or dont return calls (and some that dont want to deal with a sick pup), this place is a godsend.
I understand it is an old NYC building, but your walking into a hospital that is dirty and overcrowded, the wait was over 6 hours for our dog and he did not get anesthesia! Its staffed with lots of Interns who do not pass the correct information regarding your dogs issues to the doctor...or any one of the many doctors who might end up seeing them. They also lost my original helpful medications for my dog. The Dispensary and Cashiers department are the most helpful, but there is only so much they can do, the place is a meat market its just to big, delivering conflicting and poor overall service.
SCAM! I brought my dog here and I regret it. First impression, charged me twice for one ultrasound trying to scam an extra $500 from me. This is a business with good doctors. Not a hospital. It’s all about money. Non- profit?!? I can’t see anything but profit here. I suggest coming here if you want to spend all of your money. The doctors recommended I not take my dog home because she had yet to eat and recommended a feeding tube through her belly. The reason she wouldnt eat is because they gave her a very strong Narcotic, Buprenex. And 4 other drugs to fight the side effects. The side effects of this drug are the same symptoms we Brough her in for. And she was not in pain so no need for pain killer. I told them my dog hates it there and won’t eat until she comes home. They argued and made me sign a form. My dog is home and eating just fine. They wanted to cut a hole in her belly to feed her when she’s totally fine?!?!? This place is a total scam and VERY DANGEROUS. All they want is your money and will make your animal sick to get it!They charge you to move the animal from one room to the other. And they charge you to enter them in computer when moving the dogs. The charges add up so fast your head will spin. Systematically set up to rob you even if they have to make your pet sicker to do it. How is this legal?
I didnt have a bad experience. I traveled from Staten Island to this medical facility. Staten Island doesnt have specialist. Dr. Palmer explained everything to me. I should have came here first then Blue Pearl. The only issue I have is that Im hearing impaired, and they should make space where is quite and we could hear better.
Management at the AMC does not care about their employees nor your pet well being cared there. I have first hand knowledge. My Shitzu had cannel cough which is common if your purchase a dog from a pet shop due to puppies being with one another. AMC suggested I leave my Shitzu for consecutive over night stay for further evaluations only to charge a kings ransom. Cannel cough is treated with medication and is not serious as the vet techs stated to me. The Chairman uses the AMC for his self interest for his own interest. The AMCs Administration staff ie: President, CEO, Head of Animal Care only cares about how to charge you as much as possible during your pets stay especially for a medical facility that is NON PROFIT????????. Administration staff is a revolving door and currently no staff in place with any animal care experience or customer care knowledge. College Vet techs are who your pet will be seeing during the intake process and these interns are not experienced while they are still obtain their degree. Staff is a revolving door with no stability in this medical center with no clear direction to improve animal care. Staff is treated with treats of firing and mangers must meet number patient care targets in a month. The facility where you pet will be cared for is very outdated, dreary and does not does not meet animal health care regulations especially cleanliness. Bonni Violand formerly the Director of the AMC was a poor administrator and lacked the leadership skills to lead a animal care facility or staff. She put her own interest before the AMCs interested. Not surprising shes now gone. Lisa Williams (overweight lady with glasses & black hair) was hired because she knows the AMCs Chairman and has no clue as it relates to animal care and knows how to speak to department heads and has zero knowledge in facilities management for a animal care facility. Now the Director of patient care what a joke. Ask for her and you will agree with my review of her. There are other animal medical care facilities that can provide better care more cost efficient and provide clear understanding what medical treatment are needed are required without stringing you along to keep you pet for further observations for simple treatments and drain your money. I cannot recommend this animal care center and once you take your pet to the AMC you will agree with my review. Zero stars!!! If you care for your pet DO NOT TAKE THEM TO THE AMC!!!!!! After you go to the AMC I am sure you will agree with my review. For your pet(s) well being DO NOT GO TO THE AMC.
I took my dog here on June 11th, had to wait from 1-6 because they thought that my 14 year old bleeding from their gentiles was no big deal (shes already spade) All they did was bloodwork (450). Now they told me to return for a sonogram ($600) and they took my dog at 12:45pm. Its now 4:51 pm as im writing this review. No doctor has contacted me since taking my dog. I’ve asked them multiple times. Im actually SCARED for my dog. Will not be returning.
Waited for 3 hours for me and my dog, who is suffering from a painful earache, to be called in. Doc tells me he will take my dog into the back to perform a full checkup and then look at ear. And it will take another hour at least. We are sitting in an exam room, fully ready for ear inspection. I say he doesnt need a checkup, I have a regular vet for that, he needs his ear looked at.. nope thats not how they do things. Its going to take at least an hour for a checkup and someone to look in his ear. I realized they want to charge money for things he doesnt need that I cant see them doing. No way. Its greedy and cruel. Hes in pain but the actual source of the pain is going to be ignored for another hour, maybe. This place is for desperate situations if nothing else is open.
I saw some of the negative reviews here and felt like I should comment because I have been bringing my pets here since about 1996, either for overnight emergencies when our regular vet isnt available, or for specialist care. I have had good experiences with the ophthalmology, neurology and cardiac specialists, among others. Dr. Django Martel, in dentistry, has recently been very good and attentive when two of my dogs had to have a large number of teeth pulled. As far as waiting, sometimes I have waited hours for a non-life-threatening emergency appointment. Im prepared for that. I feel the staff is good about keeping me up to date about whats going on. Theres a sign in the waiting room saying you can check in after 20 minutes, so I always do. In life-threatening emergencies, Ive always been seen immediately. For instance, when my elderly Pekingese was laboring for breath in 2006, the person at reception stood up, looked at him in my arms and immediately called for emergency assistance. Medical staff came out and whisked Chubbs away and stabilized him that night and the next day. He had been very sick with a variety of problems for a long time, and I stayed up all night at home wondering if this was the end. When I spoke to a doctor the next day, she described his condition (slightly improved) and what she thought they could do and the limitations of that. When I said I had decided that this was the end, she said she agreed that was a good choice. I appreciated that she didnt push me towards euthanasia -- which was probably the obvious answer to her, as it was to pretty much anyone who saw this dog -- but let me decide on my own and then supported the decision. Its true they can lose some things. My dogs collar did get lost during that final visit and I was a little shocked to get it in the mail without warning a few months later. I think it only ended up staying on him in the first place because everything happened so quickly. Ive noticed on my other appointments that theyre always very careful to leave collars, leashes and carriers with me if Im leaving my pets for any period of time. Id say thats like a human hospital, where you dont want your personal items to be floating around. You should assume anything not nailed down will be lost. Take everything with you!Chubbs had had an operation on an ulcerated eye not long before his final illness, and I appreciated that the eye surgeon found out about Chubbss death and left a condolence message for me.My next Peke, Henry, had a birth defect that caused cystic tissue in his paw to abscess. Pam Schwartz took a chance and operated on the paw using techniques normally applied to the ears of Cocker Spaniels, and greatly improved Henrys condition for many years. He went from literally nonstop foot infections to a twice yearly flare-up.The AMC is expensive, though sometimes less expensive than my regular vet. It depends on the service. Basically, when I bring my animals to the AMC it is because there are no other possibilities, so I just accept it for what it is. I feel pretty lucky that I can get help any time of the day or night, and that there are people to help with obscure health problems that might lead to euthanasia otherwise. If it is possible for you, I recommend using their Credit Card Express service, where they keep your credit card on file. That way, when your pet is ready to leave the hospital, you can go immediately instead of waiting to pay while struggling with a fussy animal or while feeling personally upset due to bad news. It doesnt help reduce the actual costs, obviously, but emotionally it is a better experience not to be talking about money right at a difficult moment. You approve costs for big procedures ahead of those procedures, so they dont come as a shock to you after. Finally, thanks to the ER staffer who kept a straight face when I brought in mu new kitten because he looked bloated and I was worried he had worms. It turned out that he had just been eating like a little pig and had a fat belly.
Charged me $195 for an emergency appointment only to advise me to put my baby bunny down..Afterwards I tried to get more answers on how they came to the conclusion she was suffering and should be put down (To be specific they said she had a 20% chance of survival) and they proceeded to tell me they ran NO tests and this was based off the information I gave them alone. How you know she only has a 20% chance of survival if you run 0 tests I do not know. What was the point of the visit if you are not going to run any diagnostics????They only wanted my money. Do not think they put any thought or care into my baby. Treated me very coldly and did not reassure me at all. STAY AWAY if you care about your pet actually getting help.
I am very disappointed in the medical center. I went there on Wednesday evening, the day before thanksgiving, on the opinion of my vet because my dog, an 11 year old pom, was collapsing. Upon entering I was immediately told of the $165. charge to see a doctor. Then they triage me and my pet and took her to an area to evaluate her condition. They returned and said she was having sinus bradycardia, and syncope. They then told me there was a charge of $400 to 600. for life support measures. I agreed. You have to sign every time you authorize a procedure. They took a chest xray, another $250. extra. Diagnosis was water around her heart. No tests or blood work was preformed. They then said to hold her in the cardiac area overnight under observation was $3500. I felt the situation was extreme and decided to euthanize the dog. My heart is broken. In hind sight Where was the testing and blood work. Nothing just talk about money. $865. later, I dont have my beloved dog, just a big bill with no explanation. Im no doctor, but my doggy was always hungry, I think she was hypoglycemic, and this was her bodies reaction to low blood sugar. I fault the vet and the medical center for very bad diagnostic. Life is all about the money today, no good care.
Crooks and deceitful. Brought our dog to the ER, the Dr. Snatches her and takes her to the back she said she just wanted to check her out in the back. 45 minutes later she comes back saying sheneedes to run a slew of tests. Then tells us she needs a pace maker. Then finally when we say the price is too high she says that euthanasia is an option. Why werent we given options before 800$ worth of tests were done without consent. I am irrateand furious. On top of that yheintaje nurse was rough and jammed the thermometer up my dogs butt.
Ive been very happy with the care Ive received for my elderly dog. The staff always treats us with compassion and common sense. As an owner of a geriatric dog, I want to be careful to avoid procedures that would extend his life at the expense of his quality of life; staff has always been supportive of that goal, as well as reasonable and thorough in their explanation and assessment of the risk/ benefit analysis.
At this point I cannot comment on the medical care because we have only had diagnostics performed, costing over $1200. My biggest issue is communication. It has been terrible. Ive had to call several times to get results and to request that my dogs record were sent to our regular vet. I have never had to do this at any other veterinary facility. I will be taking my dog to another vet.

2022-05-10I visited AMC for the first time for my cat’s annual checkup. The visit went smoothly and they treated my cat with care. The veterinarian had reviewed my cat’s records prior to my arrival and took time to explain some new options to keep him in optimal health. I am very grateful!

2022-06-28Hi to all bird lovers. I am sure that some pet owners have had great success with Schwarzman Animal Hospital; Im sorry to say that my Lilly (Sun Conure) had a broken leg on Sunday, and I have always been a great believer that money is of no importance when it comes to a loved one. Now that includes all who are dear to your family. If I had a broken leg, I would want someone to help me. I paid for the emergency visit, and I waited just as everyone else; animals cannot talk or tell you whats wrong, but you can know if they are in pain. The nurse told me Lilly had a broken leg due to the x-ray. The hospital did Nothing to fix Lillys leg. She was sent home with pain medication and wait for an email or call. Unacceptable for 6 hours to leave the same way we came in. My wife returns the following day only to be told that she has to start the process all over again or wait until we get a call or an email. Its now 10:30 am Monday, so we decided to go to our doctor in the center For Avian and Exotic Animals. Without question, hesitation, or waiting, they took Lillys x-rays and fixed her leg; she is recovering at home. And by the way, Im waiting for the email.

2022-06-18We took our Beagle Lucy here for an infection and we’re incredibly grateful for the care she received. The front desk people were kind and empathetic as was the triage tech. We came on a Friday night but only waited about 5 minutes for triage then roughly another 20 for the first vet exam. Dr. Coffey was absolutely fantastic! You can tell she really loves dogs. She was also very transparent about the costs for the tests/procedures which we appreciated. She also was very thorough explaining the course of treatment and her care at home. Highly recommend and huge thanks to Dr. Coffey!

2021-10-29I have never written a review before but I am VERY happy to be able to do so today. The Animal Medical Center single-handedly saved our english bulldogs life this last week. Period. She would be dead if it wasnt for AMC. Our dog got very sick last Friday all of a sudden and I brought her to VEG in the UES in 2nd Ave, where they noticed she had zero platelets, told me she would likely have to be euthanized, and referred me to AMC. Horrible news to hear, of course. I immediately ran across two avenues and a few streets carrying her until we made it to AMC, where she was *immediately* admitted and taken to the ICU. Long-story short, her diagnosis ended up converging on acute immune-mediated thrombocytopenia, which explains the almost complete lack of platelets and partial anemia. The doctors, nurses, and rest of the AMC staff empirically subjected her to multiple treatments, including an emergency blood transfusion, a lower dose of Vincristine (a chemotherapeutic), and two immunosuppressants, until they found the sweet spot and her life was saved! I spoke with her doctors *multiple times per day*, including during the morning, mid-day, and evening, and these conversations served to update me on her course of treatment and what different options were being considered at every point along the road. These phone calls 1) never felt rushed; 2) were extremely informative; 3) were compassionate; 4) and happened daily like clockwork. We were also able to visit her (but we decided to limit it to a single visit during her stay to allow her to fully recover) and the doctors sent pictures of her every night so that we could track her progress. Once the tests showed her platelets, hematocrit, and overall clinical condition had *stably* improved, the doctors then told us she could be discharged. The discharge process was very smooth and included *a ton* of information related to 1) every single procedure she had; 2) every single treatment she had; 3) extensive details on her condition and how to best take care of her; and 4) all medicines she will need to take (some of which are for an extended period of time). My honest opinion is that this has been the most efficient and transparent hospital visit I have experienced, and I am including human hospitals here! I cannot recommend AMC enough. The only downside is the downside that all veterinary hospitals have here and elsewhere --- it quickly gets expensive. However, the quality of treatment and attention is above and beyond and there are no hidden expenses and everything was very transparent. AMC saved my dogs life and I cannot thank them enough. Particular thanks to her doctors, nurses, and staff: Ashley Bliss, Shana Coffey, Kailee Zornow, TJ Langlois, Robert Wise, and the rest of the ER coordinators and staff over there. Cannot thank you all enough. Thanks,Francisco

2022-02-22If there were more than 5-stars, wed award them to AMC! Some 18 months ago, our then 18-year old furbaby, Chong, had a one-off seizure. Our local vet refused to grant us an emergency appointment so we took Chong to AMC. Their emergency and neuro teams were amazing, diagnosed the issue, and we got Chong on meds immediately. A week later, we moved all our vet records to AMC and never looked back. Our current vet, Dr Brausa, and team are caring, attentive, and just top class - in fact, the entire AMC team are!Chong and his sister, Cheech, celebrated their 20th birthday last week, and every day, we are thankful for their wellbeing, and the care they get from AMC.

2022-05-09I’ve now had two dogs go through AMC and unfortunately both were given grossly incorrect evaluations by their vets with potentially grave implications. In BOTH cases, the staff in the ER unit at AMC saved the day. Most recently, my pug Wilson had a potentially life changing reaction to a medication and their team responded so quickly that he was able to heal completely per our recent appointment. They are so calm and understanding it is clear they both love what they do and are amazing at what they do. Not to get too mushy but my pug Wilson is my world and if I lost him or he was hurt badly I would be devastated. They saved his life and by extension a little bit of myself as well. I will forever be grateful for them! If you are reading this review there is a high chance you have a situation with your loved one. Please take them to AMC. The extra dollars for a cab or the slight inconvenience of travel away from a blue pearl or local clinic is well worth it for any serious complications. Don’t double up costs or take a chance on delaying the care your animal needs. This was my pup on his 1.5 mile walk home after his last visit!

2022-07-08I have been taking 2 of my cats here since my Ragdoll kitten developed uveitis one day that led to finding liver problems, and I wasn’t crazy about the other emergency vet I was going to. Dr. Thomson has been so wonderful with my Michelangelo, even though he doesn’t act too wonderful towards her when he is there. His liver values are normal now. Dr. Palma is also great, and it looks like he cured my other cat Shadow of a parasite after my regular vet kept treating over and over for the wrong one. He just knew from the symptoms what was wrong. If your pet has something serious going on, this is the place to go.

2022-01-21We have brought our dog Sadie to the emergency center here on a couple of occasions and have always had a great experience. The veterinarians are patient and kind, they will listen to all of your concerns and help you figure out the best course of action for your pet. The also provide contact information so that you can follow up after your appointment and have always been very responsive after the fact. Highly recommend! I believe you can call ahead if its a true emergency and they take you in right away. We thankfully havent had real emergencies, so expect a little bit of a wait if you are going in with a mild concern

2022-02-15We are so grateful to have had Dr. Christine Keyserling as our vet. Our dog had approached the end of her life and she and the staff made this extremely difficult time in our lives so much easier. She and the nurse we had were incredibly kind and patient. They never rushed us or made us feel compelled to give more money than what was necessary. They listened to our needs and complied fully with our wishes. We would also like to add in comparison to the other reviews written here, we felt the pricing was proper for our situation and did not feel that anyone there was greedy for our moneyAll in all, we recommend this place.

2022-07-03Went in yesterday with a stray that was found injured, they showed total compassion. Dr. Coffey was amazing. She went above and beyond. Totally grateful for the entire team at AMC!#PurrcyTheRescue
