The Shakespeare in other cities:
Insulted, angry and still hungry. Just look at the size and scale of this lilliputian shepherd pie for $23.00 ordered from the tiny pub downstairs menu?! That is a standard table knife and fork near this little tart! The HP Sauce bottle towers overhead at 8.3 Imagine leaning the HP bottle across this 6 skillet dish. This midget main dish was not quite 3/4 deep. The crumbled meat was at best 3/16 deep. The rest of this scanty snack was Yukon Gold whipped potatoes that overpowered the the meat. My friends sent down their French Fries to me out of concern. They saw my disappointment. I need to write this. Its been hours. I need to vent this. Move on. Go to sleep. NEVERMORE! - wait - thats Poe, not Shakespeare - but you get my point, I hope!
This is a great place! The drinks are awesome, the food is simple and delicious. My only stipulation is that the ramp is so steep that I nearly flew to the moon. The 2 steps to get to the inner bar wasnt terrible for me but it may not work for someone who uses a wheelchair or someone who cant step up the two steps. So if you can manage the ramp and two steps, youll be fine. I didnt use the bathroom while I was there, so I dont know but maybe next time!
I love a good pub and what a great find The Shakespeare was. I love the decor which has a proper pub feel and is very cosy. The menu is what youd expect for a pub (fish and chips, bangers and mash, etc). Its also a good place to watch sports. When I was there there was a World Cup match on and the atmosphere amongst the soccer fans was very lively.I ordered the hamburger which consisted of a mix of different steak meats. My only beef (no pun intended) was that I ordered the burger medium and it came rare. They did use a quality strip of bacon though and the cheddar was quite sharp so they get points for that. Also the fries were crispy, hot and salty which is how I like them. Portion size was just right. I felt full but not like Id overdone it.They have a good selection of beers on tap including lots of imports from the UK. The service was also quite exceptional. The server was friendly and checked back on us regularly. Overall it was a good experience and you should check this place out if youre in Midtown.
Very nice Irish restaurant. It has two floors, I went to the second floor that seems more quiet. The first floor was more of a pub. Menu was interesting, with good meat options such as Lamb and a good salmon. Soup special was delicious. Service is very good, they are very attentive. Recommended for a great date, to impress.
Decent local bar. Beer selection is sort of sub par given the kind of craft beer most bars Ive now. But the staff is friendly and the bar itself is interesting. We didnt try much of the food but the fries were big steak fries, perfectly cooked and the avocado toast was very tasty.
This is a really nice place. It has a good cozy feel. The only problem is that its usually too crowded to get anywhere near the bar, but if you do get a seat it makes it all the more enjoyable so come early. It has a great selection of whiskeys and other drinks with a full bar. They have a great food menu as well. Above this pub is another fancier bar lounge and restaurant. This is a nice place to have a drink until that one opens or just to hang out in general.
Nice place with a great small pub atmosphere. The entrance gives a sense youre dipping out of the main drag for a moment into a cozy little hide away lined with great woodwork and . Good small bites, cant speak to the proper sunday roast dinner but its cool they offer it. The drinks were good and comparably priced with the area. It can get pretty packed full especially if youre going right at happy hour so keep that in mind. Definitely worth the stop though.
Id been to the bar downstairs, which is an authentic English pub. But this time, we were in the upstairs dining room. It was beautiful, the service was terrific, and the food was simple but excellent. I had the gazpacho, as good as Ive ever come across and Salmon, cooked perfectly rare at my request with a delicious light chive cream sauce. I also tried my companions fish and chips and steak tartar. All very fresh and tasty. With drinks and dessert, about $70 per person plus tip. A nice night out.
Hadnt been here for awhile and tried to get a seat out in the garden, unfortunately it was pretty popular on a Friday evening. The dining room was fine though and did have the positive that it was quiet due to not many parties being there yet.We went for the Scotch eggs to start, followed by the fish & chips. Interestingly, they managed to do a soft boiled egg within the sausage meat, very tasty! The fish had a good crunchy batter, which is better than practically all the other restaurants Ive tried fish & chips in NYC. Most all the other restaurants had a unappealing soggy batter. Here they used a proper beer batter and got the texture just right. The only thing missing is the mushy peas or peas of any sort.We finished off with 2 desserts, the rhubarb/apple crumble and the milk chocolate tart. The former had a rather gritty texture for the crumble, crunchy but didnt dissolve. Other than that it was fine as was the chocolate tart. The service was fast and pleasant.
The ambiance of this place earns it 5 stars alone. It feels like youre sitting in a tavern/inn in the English countryside. The setting is rounded out by the good selection of English beers on tap and the solid, English-leaning pub food. The fish and chips are amazing. A very welcome addition to good food/good bar wasteland of Irish pub laden midtown.
The atmosphere in the pub area is fantastic. We ate upstairs, and our group had mixed reviews regarding the food. The british cheese sandwich got rave reviews, but the Shepherds Pie left something to be desired.I would definitely recommend the pub downstairs and the Shakespeare overall based on its relaxed and very cool atmosphere.
Slightly disappointed with the ambiance and lighting- you cannot see a thing and the loudness of the bar didnt make it relaxing place for lunch.Whilst I enjoyed my food - the prices and portion sizes are to be questioned. Plus a shocker for beer prices.Improvement required!!
Place has some features of a English pub but I wouldnt call it an authentic English pub experience. A decent beer selection and a sprinkles of English food choices. I visited during happy hour on a weekday and the place was pretty quiet. I expected more authentic Euro Pub experience but came away feeling that the place fell short of offering the authentic Pub experience by more than just a few yards.
Intimate, cozy, below-ground venue that embraces being a British pub. Food was excellent, in moderate portions - youll be full but not stuffed. Curated selection of draft beers, with a balance of imports and domestic available, in addition to a rotating choice of cask ales. A good choice if you want to escape the hustle and lights of midtown.
My wife and I traveled into the city for some shopping and dinner and we were very pleased at our experience at The Shakespeare. It was recommended by a relative and he was right in all the wonderful things he said.We were greeted by friendly people that seemed happy to see us and happy to help us. We started in the upstairs bar called Raines Law Room and it was absolutely beautiful with an old world taste. The list of specialty drinks was long and I finally picked a drink called the Wildest Redhead. (My wife is a redhead.) Its base was scotch but the honey and other ingredients made it perfect. After finishing our cocktails we went downstairs and enjoyed our scrumptious dinner. We choose a few of their appetizers that we never see at other restaurants because of their English nature. You must try the Scotch Egg. Yes, you must! While my wife was amazed how good her specialty hamburger was, I went with the Bangers & Mash. Three exquisite Myers of Keswick sausages over mash potatoes and a a light onion gravy. No its not what I usually order but my server, Mr Alex, was right when he recommended that dish. As a matter of fact Mr Alex was right about everything.Definitely try this place for lunch or dinner. Im very happy I did. (Happy wife, too!)
A fascinating take on British cuisine, The Peacock juxtaposes the borderline-ostentatious aesthetic its old-fashioned brownstone interior with a thoughtful, modern spin on British classic fare. For appetizers, the mushroom salad was well-composed and mild in flavor, with no single component dominating the forefront. One of their specials for dinner service, the venison chop, was also cooked to a beautiful medium rare and served with honeyed carrots that allowed both their individual savory and sweet flavor profiles to shine. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable, able to not only provide insight on the dishes and beverages themselves but also the ins and outs of how well they pair together. Dont be afraid to ask these guys questions, they really know their stuff!
Have been here for cocktail reception at a private event and also to visit Raines Law Room. staff is generally very welcoming, but can get a little hectic at prime hours. not surprising, I guess. drinks are delicious, food is pretty good. but, if it werent so close to my office, I dont know if I would go out of my way to come here.
Nice gastro pub serving proper British pub food. There are, however, some (at least lunch) service related issues. Such as food/drink runners not knowing table numbering scheme thus putting food down in front of wrong patrons and/or assuming drink placement by gender.
I had afternoon tea here on a Sunday. The afternoon tea has to be done in advance. I would say at least 2 weeks to get a reservation and order the items. I like that the tea is customizable so you get to pick 6 out of 14 items on their tea menu. Also, they have crumpets which is hard to find on any tea menu in NYC. The only problem I had was that it was difficult to communicate with the place and the staff there dont really know about the afternoon tea service. Other than that, the tea was great. I liked all the items I ordered from the tea menu: roast beef, smoked salmon, and egg salad sandwiches, scones, crumpets, and banoffee pie. All the food was fresh, tasted great, and presented well on the tea platter. I just wish it was easier to make a reservation.
Came here for a Christmas luncheon with my work family and was sceptical and was sceptical at first about the menu. To my surprise, I loved everything! The ambiance was very Shakespeare-ish, if that makes sense. The food was GREAT! I tried the Scoth Egg which was really good and the Pie of the Day which happened to be Shepherds Pie consisting of lamb, tomato sauce and mashed potatoes, topped with cheddar cheese. YUMMY!!! I can remember the name of the drink I had, but it was a Mule. Love it. Id definitely recommend this place. 👍🏽
Decent take on traditional British cuisine. The triple cooked chips were a standout - rather than the glass-like shell many restaurants strive for, these were significantly less crisp, making them taste like a high end homage to what youd expect from your local chippie up North. Surprising, and yet somehow they work. The rabbit pie was also excellent, if still heavy despite only having a pastry lid.
Tried to get a drink here with a friend and the short story is, after 25 minutes of trying to order a drink we left. The bartender clearly had her favorite type of customer and we did not fit that mold. My friend and I sat down at an empty bar waiting to order a cocktail to no avail. A couple came in a few minutes later and were immediately served. As the bartender handed them their drinks the duo even tried to help by saying what drinks we wanted. When my friend verified the drinks we wanted the bartender snottily shot back she would not look at him and only me in the eyes. I then tried to order drinks and she walked away. As the male clientele poured in the bartender only served them, she came to our area twice and i reminded her we were still waiting, and mentioned we had been here before everyone else in the bar, but she would not take our order. She continued to serve the men and would not give us the time of day. After multiple attempts of putting in an order my friend and I gave up and leftThe bartenders attitude was beyond disgraceful and leaves me wondering what type of management allows this to go on. Stay away from this establishment, they are rude and dont deserve your business.
Came here with a group of coworkers for our end of year team lunch. The food was great, the service was excellent as well. We got ushered out a little quickly for my taste (they had another large party booked apparently), and they seemed to be a bit put off by a group of adtech kids but Id go back in a heartbeat.
Came here after work yesterday with a client for drinks and appetizers...left feeling like I should have stayed for dinner (beef wellington was the special for the day, Im still disgusted with myself that I didnt try it). What I did have was a splendid hard cider, name i cannot remember but it was long and on the left side of the menu. Light and crisp and dry but not suck all the moisture out of your mouth dry. For eats we had the wild mushrooms (fantastic, earthy, buttery), chicken liver (not my thing but they said it was absolutely amazing), ricotta (I wanted nothing more than to lick the bowl when the toast was gone) and my absolute fave of the night.. the poached salmon toast. I woke up this morning still tasting it, so basically I woke up ravenous. I cant speak for the bar downstairs but it was hopping at 530 when we came in. Waiter was extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. With thi being so close to my office Im going to have to come here again because I can just imagine how the rest of the food must taste based on the small sampling I tried.
The Shakespeare is a home run. Built like a 17th century British pub (but air conditioned), it features a combination of classic UK pub beers with some US staples. Dark wood, cozy, dimly lit -- you might as well be in the English countryside. For those looking for a more upscale experience, climb the stairs to a more sophisticated restaurant with actual light!! -- and outside seating. The bar food is also classically British: go with the Scotch Egg and, of course, the bangers and marsh are a must.
English man in New York! Fish and chips at its best fully recommended for the choice and the good service. Is this the English fish and chips in Manhattan? Well you will need to visit to find out for yourself. Save me a chip! Whats not to love, turn up and get bite of this classic recipe.
Cute decor but they use super strong smelling toxic chemical cleaners and they mop the floor during meal times. I almost passed out from the fumes, and their suggestion was to move and eat on another floor instead. They should switch to unscented eco friendly cleaners.... and, as long as Im wishing, start buying organic food, beer, wine.

2022-04-20Cozy spot to get together with friends! Hosted a small gathering for our engagement here and it was perfect! We had a small area to ourselves, got great drinks and were able to bring our own cake. Would definitely go back

2021-12-19The Shakespeare is back!Fantastic pub in a great location. It was one of my favorite spots pre-pandemic and Im very pleased to see it coming back. The kitchen is not open just yet, but I understand it will be in action sometime in January. In the meantime, there is a great selection of beer, wine, and liquor, served by a very professional and friendly staff. The main bar area is cozy with a couple of televisions well placed for sports, but not overly imposing. There is a fairly spacious back room which is great for events or private parties.Looking forward to The Shakespeare finding its legs fully again and to popping in for after work drinks or Premier League games. Definitely worth checking out if youve never been, or coming back to visit if you havent since COVID.

2021-12-19This bar does it for me on a number of different levels.First, the bar is a little tucked away as it’s slightly below street level and so you get a pretty cozy vibe from the English-style pub. Then the inside is an intimate affair with two TV’s and a great selection of draught beers. This is the English style pub I’ve been looking for, the staff are fantastic and rumor has it the fare will be just as good. I’m looking forward to adding this to the regular rotation.

2022-03-30Posh, quaint bar. More of a British flavor in regards to beers. In my mind more of a place to have a bourbon, scotch or cocktail. They have bar food thats decent. Its not my style. I only frequent it as it is near the office. But its a nice looking space and good for a quiet drink.

2022-04-19Bar staff was unattentative. We waited about 15 minutes to pay our tab despite there being two bartenders and about 5 groups at the bar. Good drinks and atmosphere, but I this place wouldnt be my first choice

2019-11-17Cozy little English pub and restaurant. Very popular place so gets super crowded during the weekends. The restaurant does take reservations which is highly recommended if you are visiting during peak times. Good food, friendly staff and nice ambience.

2019-12-06The Shakespeare is a great little bar and restaurant. It is like going back in time. The restaurant side is small, so when it is full it can be hard to have a conversation, especially with rowdy finance guys. The mulled wine is the best I have had and the scotch eggs are fantastic!

2022-01-25Friendliest and best bartenders, the Scotch egg is a must, the atmosphere is absolutely cozy and familiar. My girlfriends and I came two nights in a row on our trip we loved it so much. Id be a regular if I lived here!

2018-03-19A bar / restaurant inside a hotel called “The William”. While I’ve never stayed at the hotel, their bar is very decent. What makes this place very comfortable to be in, is their people with a top notch professional sense of customer service. I’ve been here a few times since 2015, never seen one employee who acts disappointing, even though it can get very busy quite sometimes. Given the prices of the menu which are very reasonable (though I have never been, I’m sure their services at the Per Se or Eleven Madison Park will be great, too), it is amazing how well trained they are.Their foods from the items, are not as top notch, at least from my own experience. I like their thick cut fries (they probably double or triple fry the potatoes), their fish & chips are nice, too, but the patty from their hamburger lacked beefy taste. If you are in the area looking for a solid bar, this is a great candidate. As opposed to the downstairs and upstairs entrance, their terrace, when available, is much quieter. I am happy to rate this place 4 out of 5, given the area. The atmosphere, especially at the terrace, is a lot different from those bars at 3rd Ave.
