Always a vast, diverse and eclectic assortment of new and used music and movies available. CD, DVD, Blue ray and vinyl.Stickers, posters, magnets, incense, band/artist/novelty tees, pop culture sundry, some books, hats, scarfs, sunglasses...not as great as the record stores around here when I was growing up but they are all gone and The Sound Garden isnt so put that in your blown glass pipe and smoke it!
Traveled from Ohio for this gem! Ive heard nothing but amazing things from my friends that visited New York, I just had to see for myself. Theyre so incredibly reasonably priced its crazy. They have all genres of vinyl, from new age to older records. They sell everything from vinyl to blue rays, CDS, and fun stickers. Highly recommend this place.
Awesome place! They carry music in a few different mediums; vinyl, CDs, and even cassettes. They also carry DVDs, books, board games, and some odds and ends. They always have some cool music playing, and the employees are always nice. Definitely an interesting place to stop in Syracuse if you are visiting.
If you love music on vinyl, cds etc, and youre in Syracuse, NY: this is the place to go! Im from out of state. I walked in and the Rain Dogs album by Tom Waits was playing (a good sign, for me). Then Highway 61 Revisited followed (This is a great sign, for me) and I left the store w my haul as Desolation Row was fading out. A wonderful business with a great staff! The clerk even asked if the hat I was wearing was from the movie The Natural. It was, I told him. A very friendly, engaging and helpful gentleman. - Do yourself a favor and check this place out!
Overall a great store! Great selection and excellent costumer service. My only problem is that they put paper stickers on the movie packaging. I bought three criterion collection films each for $10 (which is a steal cause they cost round $40) but they had the paper stickers which usually have some residua left when pealing off. Can’t complain cause the price is so cheep it’s just I would have loved to have my films in better condition.
Incredible. I wasnt alive for the days of record stores as I was born in 91 but this is what i imagine one looked like. The vibe was just top notch. They have a huge variety selection as well. The young taller one helped me find quite a few cds I wanted in literally seconds. Everyone seems friendly and I will def be going back next time Im in town. Cant think of a bad thing to say, even the new vinyls are priced decent $20-$30 but cds are cheap $5-$20 new
A small shop located downtown that offers records, cds, and cassettes (both new and used), as well as DVDs, and a small selection of books and games. Stickers, t-shirts, and other items round out the things youll find in this popular location formed on the love of music.
Sound garden is one of my favorite places in the city. I love the friendly atmosphere and professionalism of the employees. I find everything Im looking for when i go there from games, music, movies, and various other items and collectables. This place is a gem and city staple. Thank you for your contribution. 🙏🙏🙏🕶 P.S. if they dont have what youre looking for they can also order it for you such as rare and hard to find classic movies in great quality.
This store is absolutely fantastic. Usually dont write reviews but I really felt the need to for this place. My favorite thing about it is how they have everything from modern music to the unknown and obscure across each genre, and they have every genre, even a great electronic selection which I really appreciate. I found Ed Banger Records Ed Rec 100 CD compilation here, still cant believe they had that. Looking forward to seeing whats in stock here the next time I come to Syracuse :)
I needed to buy a needle for my parents 1980s turntable and had not a clue where or what type of needle I needed. They did not sell that specific needle but were amazing with helping me figure out what needle I needed and how to get it. Absolutely amazing customer service!
Soundgarden is its own thing for the general area. Anytime you are downtown you should consider stopping in. Especially if you are a record collector. They tend to have hidden gems in their used section, as well as some awesome bootlegs scattered even among their newer records. Of course their used and new movie selection is nothing to slouch at either. I love this place. The staff is always friendly to me, and the general vibe is something I enjoy. If youre never been, make sure to pop in. And if you ever find yourself in Baltimore, make sure to check out the sister store.
One of my favorite, and one of the last music and movie stops worth making, anytime I am Crossing NYS on the Thruway.Love the music choices, eclectic people who work here. Always knowledgable, always friendly, even to an old geek like me.Found this place when my daughter attended SU, stop here any and every chance I get, always fun, always educational, always a great selection of music can not find everywhere.Great store in a great location, love it!
Very knowledgeable staff. Love the atmosphere here. Its a must-visit for any music fans in Syracuse. They have a good selection with a lot of American artists, but dont have a lot of less mainstream non-American artists. Still, I really cant recommend this place enough!
Soundgarden is one of the last old-time music stores around. Of the selection of new and used CDs and DVDs. Also they have a very good selection of vinyl. I have always found the staff to be friendly and helpful. It is definitely a place that you need to take your time and search throughout me and tire store. They also carry a selection of novelties, and paraphernalia. They also are a distributor of tickets too many local music events.
The prices are good. The staff is okay, usually helpful. Their choice of ambient music gives me a headache. They had a planet of the apes Blu Ray boxset marked 14.99. I asked the person on floor if it was priced Right. He said yes. Went to register and it was 29.99. The cashier scraped off the 14.99 sticker and replaced it with a 29.99 sticker. Then charged me 29.99. I declined the sale. Stand by your own prices. Now when I go in and see something I want, Im not sure what they are going to charge me. My visits are now less frequent
Called ahead of Record Store Day to ask if a certain release was stocked and they wouldnt tell me. I spent all morning driving and waiting in line to leave empty handed. Maybe I wouldnt have wasted all that time if I was told if what I wanted would even be there. Never had this problem with the shop I went to before I moved upstate, they are completely transparent with what they stock and are very helpful, which this store was not.
I go to a lot of different record/music stores, and for me a large part of their appeal is the ambiance. The best have this sloppy ‘lived in’ look about them. Soundgarden has been around for awhile and although hardly squeaky clean the vibe is one of a chain store or something you’d find in a mall. It lacks character and personality. Ok, so that’s totally subjective, I admit. I think part of the problem is the layout of the store, which I find puzzling. CDs and videos are right in the front and dominate. Perhaps they’re their best sellers, but they’re hardly sexy. I have a vinyl bias, but that should hit you in the face as soon as you walk in the door. Move the records up front and throw the other stuff in the back is my advice. They have a super-small video game section. I’d like to see them go the Music Exchange route and expand/diversify this gaming section; with GameStop being phased out (and probably gone within a year) they’d do well selling this media. Prices on games have taken a sharp turn towards the expensive however which I find disappointing. Anyway, about what they do have: lots of CDs, new and used. TONS of used DVDs and an expanding Blu-Ray section with reasonable used prices. Some of the new video stuff is delightfully weird and esoteric but prices are high on those. Historically they’ve had a rather weak vinyl selection, but every time I go they have more and more used vinyl. Prices (on both used and new) are very reasonable. The selection is still fairly small though; their only in town rival - a bookstore called Books and Melodies - has a far greater variety and amount than Soundgarden. If you’re in town be sure to check this place out, I just wish they’d be a little less vanilla and let their strengths sing! Not sure what the cryptic robot head emoji comment is meant to convey, but ok...
My go to music and movie shop 😃! Their in-store selection is ginormous and things they didnt have theyve ordered for me (cheaper than Amazon too!). I love the ever-changing stock of used stuff, most of all for the discounted prices, 5 for $10, and 3 for $10 deals.Im much happier getting what Im looking for, along with great things found while browsing =], than waiting for Amazon orders to ship.
Great selection of used DVD and hard to find CDs. The store isnt fancy and reminds me of the stores from ages ago where the only place you could find the hidden gems was downstairs or tucked away in the back behind a curtain. The staff are a little grunge looking but try and see through that because everyone here is helpful and courtious. If youre looking for a place thats not cookie cutter this is it. Its reminiscent of the record stores from years ago where they only sold what they knew best. Music.
Super friendly! Extremely helpful! Huge selection! Vinyl, CD, dvd, games, tshirts and many more unique items both new and used! Great place to visit! Plan on at least and hour but really you could spend half the day looking at everything! They also let you listen before you buy! ❤
Lots of great finds especially used CDs and DVDs. The prices are good also with used, most of the time cheaper than Amazon or Ebay. I have found lots of rare items here. Im from Auburn but always come here at least once a month. They pay not too bad prices for your used items but make sure they are clean, no scratches, and contain all inserts and covers because they will not buy OR sell defective merchandise.
With a name like sound garden, I thought this location wouldnt have much more beyond music, but this is far from the truth. The selection of various media and entertainment this local store offers blows the big box stores out of the water. New titles, old titles, many formats (i.e. dvd, bluray, 4k, etc), not to mention video games, apparel, accessories, vinyl, books, and great gifts. It felt small walking in at first, but the store really opens up.They also allow trade ins at very reasonable rates! It is true that trying to park downtown can be a little frustrating, but its so easy to walk to this store from many parking garages, meters or bus lines that you dont really notice. This store is absolutely worth checking out and is one of those hidden local gems.
The diamond in the giant cesspool that is Syracuse. Staff is always very helpful and nice, they have pretty much everything thing you can think of for music. Whether your a chet normalton who bumps bruno Mars or your personality was created by scrolling through /mu once you are sure to find what your looking for and if not they are more than happy to order it for you. Support small businesses yall!! PEACE
Honestly, the kid who waited on me actually didnt act like the typical pseudo alternative music store employee. You know, the people who act like its THEIR personal stuff theyre selling and could care less about giving you any type of sunny disposition whatsoever unless youre an actual friend or some musician who was HUGE in Prague about 15 years ago or tattoo artist with surgically implanted horn studs ....you get the idea. Anyway, buddy there was as far away from the typical d-bag traits that makes one a super d-bag in a privately owned music storeHe actually made me say to myself:Self, you should really about this experience on here, as buddy with the super-Z sized studs in his ears was beyond pleasant and really wanted to help you out. So I did, and hence this message. 👍🏻m/💀m/👍🏻
Music stores are becoming a thing of the past. Streaming is killing the availability of music formats we purists love- unless you go online. Soundgarden has a great selection of cds, vinyl & even cassettes. And its run by music lovers. They didnt stock some of the hard/stoner/doom rock bands I like but their selection is pretty diverse. They should dump the clothing and expand the music. I can buy t-shirts anywhere!!!
The best place to buy music, large selection of not only cds but vinyl as well. New and used cds and DVDs, they get before sny others plus they have tickets for local live shows. Summer time they have weekly movie night series. Wonderful staft, they know me there. I love that you can take your time selecting items.
In a word, Sound Garden is eclectic. As far as their music collection is concerned, the place is stuffed wall to wall with obscurities and hits alike--ranging from relatively cheap to reasonably priced, often beating Amazon. A large portion of the store is dedicated to new and used vinyl--right past a hipster mannequin that unfailingly makes me feel foolish after greeting it--if thats your thing as well. The walls are pretty much lined with bookshelves (though only a few actually house books) laden with an impressive selection of used DVDs and Blu-ray disks, as well some games. The employees may seem super metal at first but, rest assured, are quite friendly. I actually only come there to buy socks now. Socks and stickers--theyre sick.
Went to get 5 movies and a few cds. didnt have a single one i was looking for and was also kicked out 11 minutes before the store closed. All the people working were rude as hell. First time and last time inside the store. Wish I could leave 0 stars. Sure not everyone has this experience but I did.
Great service and great deals. They give you a fair amount for trade ins considering theyre a local business. They offer more than gamestop and FYE and places like that for sure, please remember that they have to profit off of these and some things just dont really sell at all so they wont take it because they have to many as it is or theyll give you next to nothing for it. I mainly go there to shop for cds and Ive found several Ive been looking for and Ive found some pretty rare ones for a steal! I highly recommend them for any of your multimedia needs
Love them. There needs to be a sound garden in the city. If ther is a movie you like or any type of music you listen to. They have it. And if they dont have it they can order it for you. 10 out of 10 times i visit sound garden in syracuse i leave happy. The staff is more than helpfull. 5 stars in my book.
Been going to sound garden for years, they have incredible selection, lately that has started to wane somewhat but they are still the place to go if you are looking for physical media including records cd dvds and blu- rays. Nice staff good prices and cool atmosphere.
Called in advance to sell DVD collection, had over 100+ they said it starts at a dollar a DVD and up based on value! They took 12 DVDs and didnt want the other ones, not that its a big deal just wish I would have known that so I didnt have to carry a huge box of DVDs in for pretty much nothing
The Sound Garden is an incredible places for Gamers and Music lovers. They have low prices on albums and games. They also have slightly used albums for only a few dollars! The Sound Garden is one of the best places in Central, NY to get music, I love it and I hope others will too.
Do not shop here, this small business does not support its local community. Its another Target or Walmart. Ask them if they comply with city mandates! .. Nope!! Ask them if they cater to the customer or its surrounding communities.... NOPE!! Support actual local business out here in Syracuse that are honest and take care of its people and community. Youve been warned, do not shop here.

2022-05-22I stopped in coming from out of town. This is a super awesome place, with one of the friendliest and kindest staffs that I have ever met. Just the type of business where I felt the people there actually cared about what theyre doing, and want to help people with what theyre looking for. Amazing collection of records, movies, and just cool stuff. Definitely on my list to return to whenever I come to Syracuse.

2021-09-12A fun local shop for music and accessories. The eclectic vibe is fun and lends itself well to being adventurous in music discovery. There are many more items than just the basics found in a national brand music store. An audiophile will love this place.

2022-08-16Ive bought a few different types of things from here in the past. Good place for vinyl, but if youre looking to sell yours for cash you wont get much. Even if its new and unopened, I ended up holding on to mine, I guess its better that it just sits around for God knows how long before I do anything with it. Maybe it will be worth more in 20 years, haha. Still a great place though. Thats just what I get for being a compulsive shopper, lol.

2020-07-12The store is about a 2 hour drive from where we live, but we were bored so we took a road trip. It was worth the trip. Fun store with a lot to select from. I love the bins where records and CDs are displayed. I dont have to bend over to look through them. They have great pricing on both new and used items. They have a great selection of metal/extreme metal music. There are a lot of fun novelty items as well. I highly recommend the store and will be going back soon.

2022-07-12This place is absolutely dangerous for me to stop at! I always spend more money than I mean to. They have everything! Movies, music, TV shows, a few books and videogames, shirts and bags and hats... even fun dish towels! Music you can get as CDs, cassettes, and vinyl, both new and used. Movies come on DVD or Blu-ray. So many options. I love this place!

2022-01-26Amazing record store with vintage feels right downtown. Every time I come back to visit the city I have to stop in to check out their latest treasures. They have an extensive collection of new and old music. You can also bring in media for them to possibly purchase. They have a great selection online as well! I recently purchased an indie store exclusive 7 Ghost vinyl that arrived well packaged and including a high quality Sound Garden sticker. Thank you!
