I would give this place 10 stars if I could and not just for the food but because the customer service that I received from the banquet manager Zack was outstanding. From the very first phone call that I made to book my daughters graduation party until he came to help clean up/pack up food when my party was over was amazing. The food was absolutely delicious and he accommodated me with vegan options for my daughter. I recommended this place to all my friends and family and I will definitely use them again for any future events I may have. Zack you were a dream to work with. Thank you again for everything.
Nice, responsive wait staff, but the kitchen needs to up their game.We ordered medium rare burgers and got well done. My husband and I were so hungry we ate ours anyway, and my parents burgers were redone. We finished our entire meal before theirs were ready. Tasty burgers, but order rare if you want any pink meat in your burger.
My family and I were very excited to finally be able to go out to dinner. My son has just recently needed to follow an allergy free diet so finding a restaurant that will be suitable for him is pretty hard. Not only did the Steer double check all ingredients, but the food was outstanding! Thank you so much for following all the rules and regulations, but also having so many Allergy friendly options. We will definitely be back.
Im sooo sorry to see you go. You were a big part of my college experience during my first time away from home. That was 1988. Youve been a great staple in the community for me ever since. Thanks for the good times, good drinks, good food and good friends! Cheers!🥂 Raise a glass to you!🥂
Great atmosphere and wide selection of entreés and drinks. Fair prices for great quality food. We dined on the upper roof which adds to the ambiance, just make sure to make reservations in advanced. The picture is cajun chicken linguine and its awesome. The spinach artichoke dip is 10/10 as well. Highly recommended restaurant. Make it a point to visit if youre visiting the area!
So sad to write this review, but I’ve never had such a bad experience. We waited a hour and a half for our food only to come out completely wrong. My son has severe allergies and this has always been a safe place with all the alternative options. Sad to say we won’t be back. Food was also cold. Hopefully, you can get your staff in order.
The Steer is very clean and friendly. The hostess was on top of things and seated us right away (we had reservations). The manager never stopped taking care of things and everything seemed to be running like a well-oiled machine. The steaks were flavorful, but for mine, I couldn’t tell if it was overdone or just a tough piece of meat. I would definitely return as it was a very positive experience.
I came on a non traditional club night so it wasnt super busy. While sitting at the bar, the bartenders were nice and attentive. I did get food, but while looking at the menu it was so hard to figure out what to get. So many items sounded really good, and I liked that they had a lot vegetarian and vegan options. I decided on the Po Boy and I was not disappointed. The flavors came together very well and it was a good amount of food all together. It came with fries, and thankfully, the sandwich wasnt just a bunch of bread. The bathrooms were a nice size and clean. The interior of the actual venue was a nice design and had cute fireplaces. I get cold easily and it was nice to not freeze the whole time I was there. As soon as you walk in, its warm which allows you to defrost on cold Buffalo nights. They also have their own parking lot which is nice. I will have to come back and try their brunch.
The dining room is lovely and its always nice to sit by the fire to eat your dinner on a colder evening. The staff here is very friendly and helpful and very knowledgeable about the menu offerings. Last time I was here, I ordered the vegan egg salad sandwich and it was delicious! There is something on the menu here for everyone and I cant wait to come back!
My family visited Buffalo this weekend, and we ended up eating here twice! The menu has a lot of variety, including several vegan options. The chickpea tots and avocado fries are creative, and the vegan lasagna is delicious! Our server both nights (I think her name is Lily) was incredibly friendly, attentive, and fun. She even remembered our drink orders from the night before! Well definitely be returning the next time were in town.

So, I really wanted to like this place since I love The Lake Effect Diner. Waitress seemed pretty good at first, then, after we had ordered, I overheard another wait staff telling other guests the specials that we never heard. I ordered the NY Strip, medium. My dining companion ordered a burger, with a fried egg, medium well. My steak was well done, burned in some places (which would have been super yummy with the contrast of a tender medium steak), dry, under seasoned, and tough. I was offered another steak... but I didnt want to still be eating after my dining companion was done, or get a sneezer. When the bill arrived, I was charged full price. The manager kindly comped my meal, which was far more than I was expecting. Hes the reason my rating is 3 stars not 1...
Great atmosphere, bar or dining area. Great selection of drinks, beers and food. Can substitute a burger for a chicken breast, or even put it on a salad. Service was a bit slow, not the waitress fault, think the kitchen was backed up. Very pleasant and food came out hot and fresh. Will return.
The venue was very comfy and warm. The restaurant had a clean rustic look with Western and rancher artwork. The food was good and the wait staff were attentive without being overbearing. The only drawer back was the music in the restaurant was too loud for easy conversation, but the outdoor seating made it easy for our group to still have a nice get together.
Amazing!! Great waiter and food ,atmosphere, parking was very but we were there on a Monday night. One food for thought being in the city location its more diverse of food choices especially for vegans. I would as a business owner make sure I dont run out of vegan entrees especially not two of them was looking forward to them. My meal was pretty amazing even being 3rd choice.
I had heard The Steer was more than the bar from my college days, and was pleasantly met with a very nice dining experience experience. I will be back. The service was good and sat us next to the gas fireplace. Many if their sauces and things are made in-house, so they’re able to check on allergens. I really appreciated the clear labels for vegetarian, dairy-free and gluten-free, and that there were several vegan dishes to choose from!Omnivores need not worry, most of the menu is full of deliciously-smelling beef and chicken. There are also happy hour appetizer specials! I’ll be back.I would prefer the dining room to turn off the TV - it’s very distracting and when I go out I want to focus on the people I’m with, without electronic lights flashing at me.
I had a great time here. The bartender was super friendly and knew her drinks. She was great to talk to.The food was delicious. There was a gluten free and vegan option. This was a great place for a group gathering. I was there for a celebration night for work and it was a great venue. The room was separate from the rest of the place so we had our privacy as well.
My Sister and I enjoyed a wonderful dinner at the Steer Restaurant. The service was excellent, the food was delicious, and the atmosphere was relaxing. My Sister enjoyed the lamb steak with potatoes, and greens. I ordered the NY Strip with a twice baked potato, and seasonal vegetables. Thank you for showing us a great time, we will definitely be back.
Covid regulation violator. Finding a great vegan place is hard to do in Buffalo. I used to eat here all the time, because the food is amazing. It pains me to write this review because I thought they would do better. But after ordering takeout from here, I had to walk into a bar of around 15 people not wearing a mask in late December. If this was earlier in the pandemic, totally fine because that would be following guidelines, at least a little bit. But now, we are in the worst of the pandemic WNY has ever seen. We are loosing precious lives and hospital workers are tired. People whose livelihoods have been stripped away are being walked over by restaurants like the Steer who are cheating the system by bowing down to possible super spreaders. NY has great resources for small businesses compared to so many other states. You may survive the pandemic, but people dont forget complacency.
There was ample parking which is always a concern when meeting friends for dinner. It has a nice atmosphere with some outdoor seating as well. The one section had ashtrays for smokers which is a plus in my book. Waitress was very good and the food was as well. If you have a larger party (more than 4 people) you should make reservations. We has planned for 10 but 14 showed up and they still were very accommodating.
We had a great dinner there with 2 very small children. Fun food but healthy options available and no wait to seat our family of 4. Everyone was super accommodating and kind. John S. our server even ran out to the parking lot after me to bring me my phone that I embarrassingly left behind! 👏🏻
Until sunday, Ive only had drinks at The Steer. this restaurant, a buffalo mainstay for years had a college bar called The Library, as i show my age - in the 90s. i wish i had photos to share. ive NEVER had more perfect food and drink as i DID at THE STEER. the food was A - MAZING❣️my drink was PERFECT. my girls n i just ordered and shared ☺️ i HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE STEER TO EVERYONE 😻 ps the servers were just as perfect 🌞
I came here with my daughter for her birthday celebration. She eats vegan. Their menu supports that style of living! Food was good, great portions for the price. The host was very upbeat and great personality!Downside, Just make sure they have everything you want if the menu.I will come again!
Dining room is nice with a great atmosphere, very lovely fire. Chairs are wonky, though. Menu is good, with a few healthy options. There are some great burgers and they make a decent effort generating interesting specials. I think theyre going for elevated bar food and the prices reflect that. Burgers are $12 - $15.
The Steer has been a wonderful gathering place over the last few years fir my colleagies and friends. The atmosphere is friendly and unpretentious. The menu is top notch pub food with reasonable prices. I usually get a burger and fries, though over my various times at the establishment I have had many of the appetizers, wings, and pizzas, too.
Not only was the food terrific, but their vegan selection was great, as well! Who would have thought?!There really are choices for everyone art this place! Our server (Alexa) was both efficient and friendly, and we didnt have to wait long for our dinner- even on a busy Friday night! Will be back here very soon!
This is one of the classic Buffalo restaurants that have withstood the test of time. A wide variety of menu choices, many of which feature farm-to-table offerings. A number of vegan options are available as well as a number of gluten-free choices. Do yourself a favor & try the stuffed pepper appetizer. Outstanding! Great service to boot
The festive atmosphere, the welcoming hello from the bartender, the food, the service and the super cushioned seating that put a huge smile on my face. Before I would be twisting and turning trying to find a comfortable position. I was there twice with friends in the same week. See you again soon!!
The Steer is always lovely...Brunch is amazing here...low key, chic vibe...delicious. Service is phenomenal...the Ceasar Salad was the best Ive ever had with homemade croutons...and we always have Mimosas! 🤪Sooo GOOD🤪 My bestie and I always have great time here...she ordered the avocado toast with poached eggs...yum!
Love the environment, awesome staff and great food and music. The drinks are amazing and always given to you by a very engaging and friendly bar tender. The owner is on site and also a pleasure to be around. This is a very laid back atmosphere and I definitely would recommend it to anyone whos looking for quality services and a good time.
I celebrated my birthday here. The venue was nice but the mangers werent nice and lied to me about what was allowed at my event. I booked it 4 months in advance and when I got there to set up the manger came to talk to me. The 17 dollar open bar turned too 20 with taxes even though the other manager said taxes were included. I was also told it was a premium bar but all we got were well. They told me not everyone had to be 21 but the day of they told me they couldnt so I had to tell my sister and other close friends last minute they couldnt come. I made pudding shots to go with my birthday cake and the manager wouldnt let me pass them out but yet he wanted to try some. They gave me dj a hard time for setting up. Honestly if I didnt plan it for so long I would of changed locations for my party. The manager ended up being the bartender for the night and all my friends were telling me how rude he was. Ive been in the service industry myself for over 5 years and I know when a customer pays for a service you should be nice and try your best to make that person happy. Instead I was stressed out when I was suppose to be enjoying my night. I still had a great time thanks to my friends and the security staff was super nice as well.
We had a group of eight people and had a limited time to eat. They really took great care of us. They even allowed us to order ahead and we recieved our food just minutes upon arrival. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal with time to spare for visiting. We will definitely be back!
I try to go here to enjoy!! FirstI went on a date I truly didn’t want or was not thrilled with my company !! So I figure this place would at least make the night some what enjoyable being here make the best of it !!! Right of the top the server was had zero patience and seem to be some where else I while we order and through out the whole night there was no smile from her at all and seem to be on cloud nine???? I will go back food was excellent ! Hope I never get the same waitress? And I’ll definitely bring better company too!!!all I can say is they need to give drug test to there workers!!!!!!
I drove past Steer every day on my way to work and never thought twice about it. As a vegan, I didn’t think the western style “saloon” with a cowboy hat for a sign would have anything for me. Man, was I wrong. There’s so many seriously good vegan choices that we’ll have to go several more times just to try everything (and to revisit the good stuff we’ve already had). I have family and friends who eat meat so sometimes it’s a struggle to find a place that will accommodate us all, and not leave someone feeling like they had to settle for the meal. This is the perfect place for the mixed bag of diets. And the moscow mule was made to perfection, service was quick. They do allow smoking outside which is fine for us but keep in mind if you’re looking for outdoor seating with folks sensitive to that. Most people these days use e cigs anyway so you hardly notice.
We were there last week for by birthday. It was Tuesday night, around 5pm, and our server was Elena. The Good:Everything was good. One interesting thing, that those who drink tea know, is that the iced tea tastes differently at each location depending on whether its real tea that they brew, or the syrup stuff from the soda dispenser. This tea seem like a freshly brewed black tea.The steak was great, although a bit undercooked (which seems to be the norm everywhere-- I think all the chefs have a dark alliance to undercook meat because they all think it tasted better rare -- drives me crazy.)The Average:The service was average. She had 3+ tables, and each table seemed to have 6+ so I completely understand. The Bad:Nothing I can recall. How could it have been a 5 star review? To have the meat properly cooked without having to ask them to send it back to the kitchen.
Uncommonly slow service ruined what otherwise could have been a nice visit. I promptly decided at every opportunity, but the overall meal still took 90 minutes from sit-down to signed check. The food is fine. The pizza I had was obviously over-cooked, with large blackened areas. The creme brulee was tasty. Portions were small, prices were average. The atmosphere was reasonably nice, and fairly trendy. Theres a garage door of sorts that can be opened, to give a faux patio feel even if youre inside.
The food was good. The price is moderate. The service was bad. Went there with a bigger group from work. We sat on the patio. We received no outdoor service until about 8pm. We had gotten there at 3:30pm. We had to go back into the bar to order our drinks and food. We also had to clear our own glasses and plates
We came here at lunchtime with a huge group and realized after ordering drinks that we were in a pretty big hurry. Rather than being openly annoyed with our craziness (and I wouldnt have blamed her), the wonderful waitress was beyond accomodating. The food was delicious and also ready super quickly even though it was a busy day. Highly recommend!
The place seems a bit run down and Un inviting. I had a burger that was okay in the pedestrian sense. Decent beers on tap, but the music was a bit odd (a Micheal Jackson medley and other pop stuff) for what was an older bar crowd. The place was also a bit dead for a Thursday dinner hour.
Really nice inside, went with some friends for late night drinks. Bartenders were very quick and were very good at managing a large crowd. Havent eaten there yet so I can only speak for the drinks which when not on special are on the mid to high price range (depending on what youre used to).
Bartender clearly disliked us simply for being a younger group, spent all his time on the other side of the bar and seemed annoyed by us calling him over to put in orders. Prices higher than some other bars in the area. Maybe it was an off night, as Ive heard good things about Steer, but dont plan on returning anytime soon.
Ordered a full rack of ribs... extremely dry and hard to eat. Price was on the high side for what you get, even if the food did taste better. Applaud them for the vegan menu and another in the party enjoyed the brunch food, but at a place called the steer i would hope the meat would be better. Id steer clear of this one...
Unfriendly staff, difficult environment, pricy for the quality of the place. I understand its a college bar, but if you are open for the rest of the day do so accordingly. The night scene is mediocre at best, but if youre expecting decent service for breakfast, lunch, and dinner then youre looking in the wrong place.Food is good, but the bartenders and servers dont know what theyre doing (cant pour drinks properly, and do not know how to properly garnish drinks/beers, or even put plates down in front of the correct people) and when given criticism the bartenders and servers are rude and unhelpful.Bottom line: If I wanted to be treated like a 16 year old by staff that is no more experienced than me Id just head to a highschool party instead of this place.(Review from a former student of UB who had came back for a beer there hoping it was a better environment...it wasnt)
Food is very good. They definitely need a little more help on the wait staff and the order wasnt right but they fixed it up. We could tell the waitress was definitely new and didnt know anything about the menu but nobody seemed to be guiding her around to help her out and waited a half hour for the bill.
The food was overpriced for the quality. They ought to clean their grill for their burgers, as mine had a lot of old char and gross bits attached to it. Also, the service was terrible. The waitress stood next to the table talking with friends for 30 minutes after we had asked for more drinks and the table behind us was waiting to order. We never did get more to drink.
The Steer is by far the best kept secret and my favorite bar in the Buffalo area. The staff is very friendly and caring, and their menu cannot be beat in terms of quality and ingenuity. They have rotating specials that are exciting to try, and TONS of options for anyone who eats gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian, or vegan (or all of the above). Im GF/DF and allergic to chicken and this is one place in Buffalo I know I will never have to worry about the food I eat. If youre not a fan of the college crowd, I recommend going before too late at night. Being moments from UBs South campus it does attract quite the college crew. They do offer takeout, which I often take advantage of. Ive never been one to want to hang out with friends at a bar, really, but this place has changed my mind. Do yourself a favor and check it out!
The artichoke dip was very tasty, just wish there was more of it. There was not enough compared to the pitas that were offered. The fish & chips were more breading than fish so were a huge disappointment the fries were tasty though. My husbands ribeye was cooked perfectly and was very tender and flavorful. I loved the mac & cheese. Reminded me of my childhood, although it took him some getting used to. The chocolate pie was a HUGE disappointment as it was 85% crust that was so hard I could not get the fork thru it. Problem with the desert was we had taken them to go so we didnt find out how bad they were until we were back at the hotel.
We were disappointed that the Lake Effect was closed this evening, but we were late. The staff told us the same owners owned Steer next door with some of the same great sandwiches, etc. We gave it a go with fresh squeezed lemonade, a great brisket au jus on perfectly matched, just a bit salty, bread, and a couple pastrami on rye. The waitress was on the spot, but the kitchen was a bit slow, considering the two small tables of clients. The pastrami was perfectly prepped, but part of the bread was overcooked and tough. We will return the nect tImethrough town
As a UB Graduate I would love to support University district businesses but I am unable to recommend the Steer or adjacent diner. The owner is a jealous, litigious person, making small business ownership difficult for other popular restaurants. I hate having to question if two of the oldest restaurants on Main by UB are only there because of Mr. Curtains multiple attempts to keep others out.
My food was overcooked, dry, and disgusting. The chefs dont know how to poach an egg, the chicken looked old, and my meal was charred on one side of the plate. My husbands burger that he requested to be medium was also overcooked. While I was informed I couldnt get a mimosa because it was before noon, the table next to us had three people pounding them. I dont understand why the law only applies to certain tables.
This place is a joke. a bunch of races workers In here. from the bartenders to theyre oreo security guards. if you are any kind of ethnicity except for white and you get in any trouble theyll kick you out even though you didnt even start it. I also got jumped by the boncers in this place where I had spend 100 of dollars. all because we told them to stop letting people skip the line to the bathroom. but of course the kids jumping the line are white and they didnt face no consequences. This low life wanna be cop juiced up security guards think they got the right to do w.e they want. i wouldnt spend a penny in there now
This place is a menace to the university community, drawing in hordes of the bottom tier of UB students and other inconsiderate riff raff who flock the street every night on their way to it from 11:30 on, screaming, hooting, shrieking, talking at the top of their lungs, ululating, hollering, urinating openly, etc. The establishment itself frequently blasts music that shakes buildings blocks away until 4 am. The smell of the food from the place is nasty, even by standards of a garbage dump. City needs to revoke its licenses and make whatever changes to zoning regulations are necessary to keep such insanity limited to the zoo and out of the UB area. It really makes UB and the City of Buffalo look bad.

2021-08-17My family and I decided to take a trip to Buffalo, New York and stumbled upon The Steer. And i ordered the “3151 Steak Sandwich” and honestly, I think it was the best steak sandwich I’ve ever had!! The service was astounding!! Lots of seating, with beautiful decor, and nice clean bathrooms. The kitchen is mostly open so you can see the chefs cooking from the bar. Seeing the chefs so dedicated and intricate with their work is quite reassuring because you know your food is cooked with love and care. Me and my family are so happy we found this restaurant, it’s been an honor to dine here, Thank you ‘The Steer’!

2022-06-25Terrible service. The waiting staff was highly unorganized. I walked in and a customer was extremely intoxicated dancing on our waiter creating a distribution and delay in our service. No one stopped serving the young lady or intervened. We finally ordered our food and half of our food arrived. When asked for the rest the waiting staff was confused on what was actually ordered. Burgers were served BURNT, when ordered medium. They then struggled to removed food that never arrived off the final bill. After 45 minutes the Owner walked up to the counter as his staff was standing around struggling, and laughed directly in my face at the situation. I will never return to this facility or recommend. Save your time & money.

2022-07-01Glad Steer is open again. Really love the new manager, Hannah -- shes so personable & has great menu/drink recs. BTW def think Steer should put the Garbanzo tots back on the menu, they were sooo good.

2021-06-02Pros:- Great Atmosphere- Convenient Location- Great decorations and overall setup is excellent- Friendly StaffCons:- Price doesnt justify quality- Good but not Great food- Wait times for food to arrive can be a little long (we had a lot of people so maybe thats why)Overall, I think this is a good place to eat but you shouldnt expect anything amazing. The vibe is really nice but if youre only coming for food (and expecting top of the line stuff) then this place really isnt for you

The old menu item the Elvis was delicious. Who knew bananas, peanut butter, honey, bacon, cheese and a burger would all go together so well! The atmosphere was great and full of old touches of Buffalo history hanging up as decor.Great place to dine, host events it appears to as well. Will be back again soon!

2020-01-13Havent seen my friend Tucker in awhile, think hes down in Florida. He has changed the nature of his restaurant several times, and I like his menu. I had firewood chicken, fried avocado, and took rum cake and a vegan raspberry cheesecake dessert home for later!

2020-01-12I really want to like this place but everytime I go something is wrong. First time I went I got the steak and eggs and they gave me sausage patties and I hate sausage. Second time I got the french toast the regular one with the strawberries and whipped cream and I recieved the savory one instead. I just went again today and asked for the steak and eggs again and I wanted medium rare and they gave me well done. I told the waitress and they had them redo it for me but she came back with a small plate and the chef wanted proof it wasnt how I asked. Why would I lie about that rather than eat what I asked for? Anyways, after she came back with my new steak it still wasnt medium rare, more towards medium and I just accepted it because Im not waiting all that time again. I dont think Ill be coming back here, theres always an issue.

2018-04-19The bar area smells like a huge can of beer but hey its a college bar right? There is a lot on the side they share with lake effect so your not forced to use the pay2park machine whoot whoot! This place is appropriate for all ages during breakfast lunch and dinner hours. They do turn up and party after 9. Be prepared to be IDd at the door.We called last minute and got reservations so that was a good sign. Our waitress was very polite her service was great. The drinks are a bit pricey Ill say. At least $10 a pop besides some wines and most beer.My boyfriend ordered was the philly steak soup appetizer which was phenomenal came with crackers.I got the french onion soup. French Onion soup was so CHEESEY. More cheese than actual soup but the flavor was spot on so I gave a pass. The macaroni and cheese tastes like REAL baked mac and cheese if you know what I mean a side is $7. Fish fry is HUGE and will definitely fill you up.I got the Blackened Cajun Chicken and Shrimp Alfredo. For me it was a nice portion. The chicken was good and flavorful and the shrimp was buttered, peppered and salted. I was expecting more of a spicy kick to it but it was great.Overall our bill wasnt too high. And we both enjoyed our time. Plan on going back soon.

2018-11-12Tasteless burgers. Too well done. Terrible service. One waitress doing both a bartenders job and waiting on tables. The cream of cauliflower had potential but had too much of what I was assuming was pepper in it. The presentation of the food was spot on though but did not reflect the taste of the food in the least. There was tons of pickles on my plate and all I could smell was pickles while I ate which was truly unappetizing. The place smelled of stale beer. It was way overpriced. The bathrooms are weird and disconcerning and there is a two way mirror from the washroom overlooking the bar too. The atmosphere was very unsettling and the loud music traveled into the dining room. We wont be coming back and do not recommended the place.
