I went to the wayward hairdresser with some pretty severe bleach damage and strong roots showing against the brassy blonde. To tell you that wayward salon transformed my hair would be an understatement. They treated, colored, and cut my hair to a warm honey brown. Not only does it look and feel amazing but the company was great as well! Would definitely recommend going here.
Haley May is so ridiculously talented! I will try to be concise in this review, but it will be difficult because she is so awesome.1. I came in with a very specific cut and color vision, which she executed to a T!2. I asked to preserve the length that I had (short bob length), and she did! No stylist has ever done so!3. I should mention that the cut was performed on a year of self haircuts—she nailed the shape which needed a lot of help.4. There is a lovely backyard where you can enjoy a beverage and have your color process in fresh air.It was the first time I have ever colored my hair, but it won’t be my last!
If you aren’t getting your hair done by Justin what are you doing?? Justin is truly incredible and every time I see him I come away with one of the “bests” for my hair - best haircut, best styling job, best balayage, best toning - without fail. Highly, highly recommend.
Hailey is a very professional colorist and I am really amazed with the results. I just wanted a root touchup for my red hair and a glossing, and the results are amazing. They also were able to take me in the same day, thanks for saving me! 🖤
I absolutely love coming here!!! I have gotten my hair done several times by Haley May and I am obsessed. She has dyed, cut, and styled my hair numerous times and I ALWAYS walk out with more confidence because my hair looks amazing. Haley is also extremely patient because I have a ridiculous amount of hair which can take many hours to dye. She is very friendly, warm, funny, and professional. I trust her fully which is hard for me to say as I have had many negative experiences in the past in other places. I feel very taken care of when I go in because she always listens to what I say I want and checks in along the way. Also her head massages while she washes your hair is to die for! I followed Kelly from Fox & Jane to her lovely new salon. Shes been cutting my curly hair for years. Its always tricky to find someone who knows how to cut curly hair -- and Kelly really gets it. She recently started coloring my hair right before and its never looked better. Kellys also just a pleasure to talk to. Highly recommended!
Lynn was absolutely fantastic to work with. We had a short consultation where I showed her some hair inspiration on my phone, and then after getting a sense of what I was looking for, she dove right in and got to work. She made me feel relaxed and taken care of, and she really understood the vibe I was going for. My hair transformation was better than I had even hoped for! Hands down recommend, and will definitely be a returning customer!
Stephanie did my smoothing treatment today and wow. She fixed the impossible. My hair is naturally wavy and frizzy. This treatment fixed the frizz, made it shiny, and finally it’s a thickness that can be styled without taking hours. Stephanie was so kind and patient throughout it all. Seriously commend her for being patient because my hair is rough to tame. Thank you!! Already loved this place for Haley May’s beautiful haircuts. Stephanie gave me the most gentle wash and blow out of my life!! It was such a joy being in her chair andy hair came out great! I have naturally curly hair and her gentle handling of straightening my hair was truly wonderful. I will surely be back! The receptionist is also lovely and I was so grateful for the easy booking process! The atmosphere of the salon in general is great!

This is my third visit with Stephanie. I had 2 blowouts previously and today I got a haircut. At my last blowout Stephanie recommend a dry shampoo that has helped manage my hair this summer. Stephanie was attentive thought the haircut, always stopping and asking if I wanted to go shorter or stay at the length. She also took the time to style it after blow drying it (am added bonus I did not expect). Im so happy how this cut came out. Definitely deserves more than 5 stars!

Such a great experience! Hazel was the senior stylist who worked on my hair and she was fantastic! We had a great dialogue about what I was looking for including everything from the style itself to the lifestyle/level of maintenance I was up for. She totally got it and I came away with an amazing cut thats exactly what I wanted!

Kelly has been doing my hair from the beginning of time and there is no one I trust more than her to have me looking and feeling my best! My blonde always looks perfect EVERYTIME I leave and my hair remains healthy despite how light I am (my natural is very dark). It is so clear that Kelly cares about everyone in her space - weather it be her guests, or her incredible team (who are just as talented! Hazel did my platinum once when Kelly was packed and I forgot to make my next appointment and Hazel totally killed it!) I trust any of her staff and can’t even begin to describe how comfortable and welcome they make everyone feel. They always have great tunes, are extremely clean, use amazing products, and are so fun to talk to while sitting in the chair for hours. Thank you Kelly and wayward team for being my hair home! You are the best!
This is the second time I’m getting my hair highlighted here by Justin. He did a great job the first time so I had to come back. As a brunette it can be hard to strike the balance between getting something subtle but has enough of a pop to be noticeable. I love the honey, caramel color on my natural dark hair. I got a lot of compliments on my color and it grew out so nicely. No awkward lines. My hair is very fine and frizzy and it didn’t damage my hair. I really didn’t have to do much to maintain it. Would definitely recommend this place and Justin!

Haley-May is the best colorist Ive ever worked with. Her expertise actually gave me the confidence to go from blonde to pink (from dark brown natural color), and I still get so many compliments on it! The salon is super clean, they are strict about health/safety protocols, and I feel safe and relaxed going there in the pandemic. And everyone who works there is friendly and chill.
I had such a wonderful experience with Lynn! I have never gotten any color done before and she was so comforting and helpful during the whole process. I have very curly thick hair and have had a lottttttt of bad cuts before so its really such a pleasure to have a cut done by someone who knows curls. My blonde highlights turned out looking perfect for summer - beachy and very natural looking. Plus she also gave me a much needed cut to help my curls get back some of their shape.
I had an amazing haircut with Hazel today. I felt comfortable through the whole process, and left extremely happy with the results. You can tell that the salon really values customer service and care, and the store was super nice too.
I love this place! I have shoulder length blonde hair and Ive had both a highlight and a cut from these guys (Justin and Kelly respectively). While its a touch pricey, it was so worth it- my hair has looked super good for months now. (Someone even asked me if I had it cut recently and I had to admit its been close to 10 months!). The shop is super cute and close to the 3 train and surrounded by awesome places to eat so its worth the trip if youre not local. Highly recommend them!
Ive been going to Kelly for a few years and shes the only hairdresser that I trust to cut and color my hair. I have extremely thick hair and so to find a hairdresser who can give BOTH a good cut and color has always been a challenge for me. So when I heard she got her own spot (The Wayward Hairdresser), I knew I had to follow her. Whether to just get a cut/touch up done or full color transformation, my hair always comes out perfect every time. I always get compliments on my hair. Kelly is not only amazingly talented but shes so personable and sweet. Im super lucky to have found her! Also, the salon is very chilled and comfy! Definitely recommend coming here to get your hair done :)
I booked a last minute bleach & tone roots touch up with Justin and my experience was fantastic. The whole process took about 3 hours and I love the results. I will definitely be coming back for future touch ups. Justin was quick, friendly and clearly knowledgeable about hair care & styling. Highly recommend!

I came here yesterday after walking past it everyday on my way home to get a cut and color. Haley-May was my stylist and we did a virtual consultation before so I could explain what I wanted. She is absolutely wonderful, her skill is incredible (I LOVE my hair) and she’s such a great conversationalist. The salon itself was so welcoming, everyone is so friendly. I’ll definitely be returning and will recommend to any of my friends looking for a salon.
Stop everything you are doing and book Stephanie right now. I booked quite the drastic change. Immediately, she made me feel welcomed and at ease. She was communicative every step of the way, precise and incredibly warm. The outdoor patio is a perfect spot to hang while your color sets and every stylist seemed friendly and knowledgeable.
Kelly, the owner, is incredible!!! She is wildly talented at hair color and cut, not just when she does the work, but also anticipating her the cut and color will look 2, 4 or 6+ weeks later. She is a true talent. Kelly makes her clients feel comfortable and anticipates their needs, she also is upfront and honest when a client asks her for something that isnt realistic for hair (because of damage, texture, etc). I cannot recommend Kelly and her amazing salon more!!
Haley-May was amazing! She totally understood what I was getting at, was very confident and put me at ease, and asked tons of great questions and offered amazing suggestions. I am so excited to go back and am totally in love with my hair!
I went in looking like a mess and left not only looking better than I have in years but also with a big smile on my face and a bunch of tips and tricks to finally take care of my hair the way I should have been. 10/10 would recommend this place to everyone I know.
I wouldn’t trust anyone else with my hair! Seriously, she is amazing - a true artist. Even when my roots are showing and I’m overdue for a touch up, I still receive compliments on how beautiful my hair looks! When the new salon opened and I had to start schlepping via two trains and more walking than I would like, it was totally worth it. The salon itself makes you feel like you’re walking into a friend’s house to gossip and share some wine, which I totally do. Wonderful atmosphere. Simply a great place run by an awesome lady. I told Hazel I felt like Id gone on a makeover show when she was done with my cut. I absolutely love it, and I already booked my next appointment. Hazel listened, checked in with me and did not rush through the cut at all. I highly recommend The Wayward Hairdresser!
Sooo many wonderful things to say about this place. I have always wanted to go ice/white blonde and was always told by other salons that it couldn’t be done/would damage my hair beyond repair/was too long of a process. Haley was the first to tell me that not only COULD it be done, it could be done without damaging my hair and I could have the look I wanted in one visit. She also gave me some really great tips on how to maintain it. Haley did an absolutely freaking AMAZING job and I could not be happier!

Wayward Hairdresser is the best place for cut and color in NYC. I have gone to both Kelly and Hazel and have absolutely loved may hair every time. I havent gone to Haley Mae but have seen her work while in the chair and it is top notch too! Not only is the entire team very good at discerning what you need, they are thoughtful to not over-sell or under-sell services. They are super genuine in wanting each client to feel fabulous. I have been going to Wayward since it opened but recently went after it re-opened since the pandemic. Their cleanliness and policies were strong before but they have taken things to the next level. I felt completely safe (masks on, no food or drinks inside, temp taken at the door, and clean plastic clothing covers) and was glad to trust them with my hair after quarantine! I am moving to California and will miss them SO much.

Nifty and super welcoming vibe at this place! Ive been going to Justin since I moved to Brooklyn and let me just say, he is the absolute best of the best! He knows my go-to color is always pink but I like to let him experiment with various shades of pink along with other complimentary colors. I used to bleach my own hair (eek) and hope for the best in terms of hair dye. Justin is always there to save the day with my hair. Also, the biggest sweetheart ever and he always goes out of his way to make you feel welcome.
Had a great experience. Im notoriously awful at explaining what I want done with my hair, but the staff was able to do great work for me despite myself. There was also had a small mixup with scheduling (no ones fault) and they were excellent with communicating how to fix it as well as being very flexible with their time. Cannot recommend enough!
Kelly is an amazing hair stylist! She is somehow always able to create the color/style I have pictured in my head. She does amazing color (think rainbow) and cuts. I followed her from the salon she used to work at because I don’t trust anyone else. I receive compliments on my hair almost daily. Her salon is warm, inviting and wonderfully fun! Great environment to get your hair in great shape! Haley May is now my go-to stylist after my full head of highlights + cut. She is focused, knowledgable, explains everything so clearly and just does an amazing job, and happens to be a great conversationalist on top of it all. This location also uses an excellent array of product as well as Aveda color. My hair looks rich, smooth, without a hint of damage. Would recommend everyone I know to come here.
Justin did an awesome job with my hair! He had to remove an old box dye that I still had leftover in my hair and then set the new color and he got the exact color that I was looking for. Would def recommend him!! Also was a very clean experience in terms of COVID precautions (everyone wearing masks + temp check + chairs getting cleaned after every customer).

I followed Kelly from her former salon without hesitation. Most recently, I had a chance to have a long overdue color refresh done by Hazel (@artistrybyhazel_) and I couldnt be happier with it! The job took seven hours and she was attentive and patient throughout the whole process. I never felt that she was rushing through the process and the result was a really beautiful brunette color with tons of dimension and natural-looking highlights. Thanks Hazel!
Hazel was able to understand exactly what I wanted from my haircut, even though I couldn’t tell her exactly what I was looking for! Everyone at the salon is professional, and the space is clean so I felt very safe. I have been twice now and I can’t imagine going anywhere else. High recommend.
I just followed Haley-May to this amazing salon. I have struggled to find someone in Brooklyn who could color my hair correctly. It is fine and very porous and as it has started to get gray, it seems impossible to ever get the color right. I have spent too much time correcting bad color jobs (and at the expense of my hair). Enter amazing, Haley-May. She truly understands the science of color and the needs of her client (plus how their hair will respond). The first time I went to her, she spent a great deal of time with me to tell me the options I had to correct the color as some might be more immediate but damaging to my hair. I choose to have it corrected over a few months (and of course, it always looked fabulous during those three months). And then WOW - EXACTLY what I wanted and so shiny and beautiful. If most of you are like me, you know how hard it is to find someone who does such a great job that you leave the shop feeling like a super model !! I havent had many of those in my life. She gives a stunning cut and style as well. She is one talented lady. And I love love love this shop. Kelly (the owner) is so welcoming and lovely. Its got a great Brooklyn vibe with beautiful energy. This place is a gem and I will be coming here and to Haley-May until the end of time!
I had such a great experience with Haley May at Wayward. I came in after having tried to go platinum (my hair is black) at a 5th avenue salon, that place was such a nightmare, I had chemical burns and they way overcharged me. I found wayward and HM the next day through a friend, she loses me up with all the info I needed and products that helped correct what had happened, I saw her 4 weeks later and I’m so happy with the result, I’m actually platinum now. Would 10/10 recommend. Everyone is really friendly and professional, and it’s really great value.
This was my first time getting my entire head of hair changed to a different color so I stopped in and I was so impressed with how neat and tidy the salon was, friendly staff, and of course Haley who did the color job. She was fantastic! So friendly and knowledgeable. I showed her a picture of what I wanted and she worked magic to an exact shade! I highly recommend her for any coloring you need and to see how awesome the salon itself is!

I have gotten blonde balayage, foils, and a haircut from Haley-Mae several times during the pandemic and this place is fantastic! Everyone is super friendly, and it feels very COVID-safe—strict masking, plastic barriers between chairs, and even a backyard if you need to take your mask off for a minute. I’ve been really happy with all the color, too. It always looks great, and I appreciate how celar and detailed Haley-Mae is when explaining options/how it will look. I haven’t booked with any of the other stylists but they seem great as well. I always leave feeling satisfied and excited about my hair!
Wayward Hairdresser is a neighborhood jewel. Actually, I now live several neighborhoods away and still come here for my cut and color with Hazel. The woman-owned salon is brand new, clean, and following all precautions incredibly carefully. The amenities are amazing — bottled water, charger, you name it. And Hazel transformed my dull, dry hair into a healthy mane that I barely recognized! I can’t recommend it enough.
Hayley May is an incredibly talented colorist and stylist (I followed her to this location) who always gives me the hair I wanted, even when I didnt know how to ask for what I wanted. The new location was an added bonus -- the space and staff are all incredibly welcoming, from the brightly colored walls to the coffee to the chitchat, its always a treat to get my hair done here.

I went in for a pretty dramatic change (blonde balayage to chocolate brunette), so I was a little nervous how this was going to turn out. I neednt have worried, though. Haley May absolutely knocked the colour out of the park and is such a cool, down to earth person, that I felt like I was just hanging out with a friend the whole time. The salon itself is also really cute; they have a gorgeous little backyard and clear screens in between each station, so was very COVID safe. Highly recommend!

An absolutely wonderful experience - Kelly Shine is down to earth and super talented. She listens carefully, has amazing skills and insight. I seldom post reviews but everybody needs to know what a stellar stylist Kelly is. I stumbled on to Kelly at Fox & Jane b/c I was desperate to find a stylist who both understands the style I am looking for and able to execute on it. My face is long and Im self conscious that my hair style makes my head look even longer. I have been to too many stylists, after 1 or 2 cuts, I leave b/c they dont understand what style is best for me based on my preferences. I always leave feeling unhappy or go back to fix, until Kelly!! I have been with Kelly for two years with no intention of leaving.Kelly, is simply amazing. She has both the talent and experience to know how to cut the style you want and offer suggestions of what will enhance it. She asks questions for clarity and delivers primo results every time. When she colored my hair for the first time, I couldnt believe how great it looked. She is a styling talent, communicative about appt times, and an altogether warm soul. Kelly is my girl, and I would highly recommend her!

Hayley May is amazing. Like a good therapist, and an even better colorist, she saw me through thinking I was ready to be gray, realizing I am not ready and uncovering just the right hue of blond. She is so knowledgeable and patient. And the salon is wonderful with great refreshments and music and a comfortable atmosphere.

Kelly and Hazel are an absolute dream to work with! I have never felt more comfortable with, cared for or understood by a hair stylist. Kelly did a cut, full color and half head highlight, that are beyond what I could describe or imagine. They are two seriously talented and knowledgeable professionals using great aveda products and techniques. I learned tips and tricks to preserve my color and help my hair and left feeling like a million bucks! Hazel was an absolute delight & gave me the exact look I was looking for.I was worried about going to a new place during pandemic times but the staff at WH was clearly invested in taking all COVID precautions and I felt totally safe there.
Lynn was amazing! She really gave me what I wanted.. shes talented, patient and has positive vibes to her! I felt great in her hands. Will definitely be back!

Struggling with words to describe how amazing they are!!! These are simply wonderful human beings! Exactly what you need to be, to be an excellent hairdresser. In 35 years, I tried so many, all over the world, was continuously disappointed, mainly by the hairdresser not listening to me. Almost gave up. Until I ran into the wayward crew. They listen, I mean really listen, in between the lines, anticipate, in seconds incorporating what a person you are and what you want. And they have things in their repertoire others simply dont or are scared to do. And in addition they are cool, empathetic, they simply got it all!!!
I cannot say enough how much I love Haley-May at The Wayward Hairdresser! Haley has been doing my hair for YEARS now. She has seen me through various stages of balyage, Platinum blonde, and most recently brought me back to a natural blonde-brown in 1 DAY! It was a LONG process but she was so amazing and willing and helped me get the look I wanted! She always listens to me, and is also honest with me about what is realistic and safe for my hair. I cant recommend Kelly highly enough. I have been seeing her for years and have followed her from her previous salon. She has an almost telepathic understanding of what you are looking for in terms of cut and color, but also isnt afraid to guide you towards a particular style if you are feeling indecisive and looking for some direction. Shes warm and funny and easy to talk to. Her new space is bright, welcoming, and comfortable. I feel fortunate to have found her!
Prior to having Haley handle my mess of a hair hat, Im often down in the dumps. Its difficult to see a future that isnt as grey as the trains that take me to The Wayward Hairdresser. Upon walking in, I can feel my mood elevate. My outlook begins to brighten. This is before Haley even asks me (with her slight NY accent) what Id like done. As she works the skills shes developed over many years, I swear I can feel G-d forgiving me for my transgressions. When she finishes, saying I feel like a million bucks is an understatement. A billion bucks is more appropriate. Maybe a billion and a half. Anyway, I digress. Haley is top notch at her craft. Id call her the Tom Brady of hair but I hate Tom Brady. 10/10, 5 stars, etc.

I live close to the wayward hairdresser, but I am always wary about new businesses in Crown Heights bc its very important to me that I spend my money in the neighborhood at places that are part of the community. The stylists at TWD are born and bred new yorkers, and are the sweetest people. Hazel gave me the most killer undercut and we had so much FUN doing it! Im stoked to go back to get a shape up, and Im def getting some wild highlights at some point since hair color is one of their specialities ^_^

Hayley May did the most amazing job guiding me from lifelong natural redhead to platinum bombshell. I’M A PRETTY PONY YA’LL. I feel like an assassin, a hot assassin. I can kick higher because of this hair. It’s true. She taught me how to care for my new look too. I’m obsessed. She didn’t even flinch when I insisted on 10 consecutive (aggressive) double-high fives at the reveal. Absolutely recommend.

2022-05-13I love my hair! Stephanie did an amazing job helping me figure out exactly what I needed. I asked her for her input and so appreciated her insight. I have long hair (and a lot of it), so it can get heavy and limp. Stephanie added a bunch of fun layers (just like I asked), giving it so much body and flow. She also did a really cute bob on a customer before me, so she’s definitely versatile!The salon is very nice and it seems like everyone gets along very well. It’s definitely a positive workplace. I will definitely be back!

2022-08-19I went to get my haircut by Justine and it was one of the best cuts ever! I’ve been struggling with my thin/fine hair my whole life - and he did a magical job with the cut and showing me how to give it more volume. I was so happy that I had him do my wedding updo- and IT WAS PERFECT! It also survived a courthouse ceremony, bowling, a 2 hour boat ride, dinner and karaoke😂 I love that he used the best products so my hair wasn’t dried out the next day- even after being curled! Can’t recommend him highly enough✨

2022-04-29Highly recommend this salon. Stephanie gave me one of the best haircuts I’ve ever had! She talked it over with me beforehand and explained what she’d be doing and it turned out exactly as I wanted. So happy and definitely recommend Stephanie 100%! All the staff at the salon were very welcoming and attentive. They have vegan products and hair dye which is one of the reasons I chose to come here, thank you for choosing vegan and cruelty free products!

2022-04-15Moved to Brooklyn a few months ago and finally decided it was time to find a place for a hair cut. I booked an appointment with The Wayward Hairdresser based on the great reviews and the fact that it’s within walking distance of my apartment. The entire experience was wonderful! Stephanie did a great job understanding what I was looking for and the cut looks great! From the moment I walked in the door to when I left, I felt welcome and at ease. Overall it was an incredible experience!

Shout out to Lynn and Hazel especially; theyre very good at translating things I like about different haircut examples into a style that I want. Theyre also great at cutting curly hair (mine is a mix of 3a and 3b). Very pleasant and professional!

There was a variety of music which I love so all clients can possibly enjoy while being serviced. I loved the professionalism of Stephanie taking care of my hair.
