I’ve been going to Jean at Thomas Taft for over five years - and she’s the best! I’ve never been adventurous with color or cuts - especially as a curl girl - but she’s the best and I always get compliments on my color! Before this, I would drive to Virginia because I literally couldn’t find someone in NYC I trusted with my hair for cut, color and value. The experience at Thomas Taft is also amazing - friendly staff, great music, awesome products and sometimes even a Gus Gus sighting!
I am so pleased with my experience with Thomas Taft Salon on the UES! After not having super great experiences with haircuts at other salons, Tess was able to talk through with me the style I wanted and really bring her expertise to what would look good with my face. Happy to report I LOVE how my hair looks now and look forward to going back soon.I cannot say enough good things about Thomas Taft Salon and Tess!
I didn’t get a haircut all of quarantine, so when walking into the salon I was a bit nervous. But that all soon went away once I started talking with Vicky. Her energy was so calming and welcoming. She gave me exactly what I wanted while enhancing my natural hair texture. It was the perfect self care experience to celebrate getting vaccinated. I feel more myself with this new hair :)
Shlomi has changed my life with my new haircut. I get compliments from strangers. I feel different about myself. I’m more confident in general. I had the best experience here. I live in California and came to NYC for work and just wanted to “freshen up the ends”. I’m so glad Shlomi was honest with me said I could get so much more from a cut. I’m glad he was brave to make the change. I think I will be flying to NYC every couple of months now for my appointments here.
Ive been going to Thomas Taft Salon on the UES for over a year now (3 haircuts) and have had only the most amazing experiences. When Tess cuts my hair I feel completely comfortable and relaxed - good conversation and also an honest opinion of what she thinks would look good vs. what I think would look good.Ive recommended many family members and friends to go here and will continue to do so!
I LOVE going to Thomas Taft and this is the only place I get my hair cut in the city. I typically visit the UES location, and Tess & Bre are the BEST stylists for curly hair, and I would trust them with my life. They are always so cordial, and I look forward to my appointments with them. They are super attentive to my needs/what look I want, and above all theyre honest with what can be achieved and talk through any adjustments that would need to be made, beforehand. Go here for your next haircut! you wont regret it!
My hairstylist did NO consultation before the cut. They totally ignored me when I wanted to talk to them and explain what I wanted and how to work with my hair. They just asked for a picture and blew me off when I tried to add details. This is not professional and made me feel very uncomfortable.Additionally, they clearly know nothing about curly hair and used the wrong products on my hair. You simply cant use the same products that you use on straight hair on curly hair, even if you try to blow dry it straight. They used a clarifying shampoo during the wash and did not add a leave in conditioner or cream to add moisture back into my hair. I know how to do my own hair and what products work on it, but the stylist just didnt listen to me when I told them I needed more product to prevent it from frizzing up during the blow-dry. And then of course when I complain that my hair looks dry they try to blame it on me! I redid my hair once I got home because it was a poofball. Two stars because the haircut itself was fine. If it was a $25 cut and go itd be worth it.
LOVE this place. My stylist disappeared during the pandemic and I needed HELP. I found the amazing Jean at Thomas Taft UES and she is a dream! I have had amazing haircuts each time and everyone at the salon has been sweet and helpful and Super careful about Covid issues. Love this salon and so happy to find my new hair home!!
I have been using Ivan Torres as a stylist for the last 6 years and I would follow this man to the ends of the earth for his massive talent and equally wonderful personality. He really listens to what you want and will make suggestions based on his expertise. I used to be terrified of coloring my hair (although always wishing) because my 2c curls are already super temperamental and my hair turns dry, brittle, frizzy at even a thought of less than perfect care or styling products. Ivan asked me to consider bayalage after a while of seeing him and I have never looked back. I drive in from 2 states away for my hair care with Ivan. Zero regrets.Whether youre looking for a new style or just taking your style to the next level he is the exact stylist for you.The salon itself is great, super easy to book appointments from their website, and their UES salon is really close to the subway which is perfect for a Queens and East side girl like myself. The atmosphere is very pro but very chill and everyone is happy to help you out.
I absolutely love this salon and love my hair artist Uros. He is so fun to be around and I always look forward to my appointments. He does just a truly fantastic job.Everyone at the salon is always so friendly and it’s always clean. Everything tends to run pretty on time too which is so helpful.
Melyssa is absolutely fantastic. She listens to what I want and somehow magically creates it every time. I have been getting highlights and haircuts with her for years and could not be happier. The salon is also a fun spot and if you’re lucky you can play with Gus Gus!
The job that was done at this salon was incredible, I was so happy with the results and my beautician. I made an appointment for my daughter and I to return after they opened up again. Unfortunately we had a death in the family and could not make the appointment. I called to cancel and it was not a full 24 hours in advance ( it was 12). They would not waive their penalty for our appointments or anything. I lost $200. They lost two customers for life. Shame on them.
I’ve been one of Melyssa’s clients for over a decade. She’s an incredible hair artist who takes the time to understand what her clients really want when they sit down in her chair. She’s cut, colored, highlighted, and ditched-the-dye for me. Make an appt with her & you will meet your forever stylist.
Uro$ was the best hairdresser ever! I went a few days ago and I was his last appointment of the day. I was nervous that he’d rush through the entire process of consultation, wash, cut, blowdry and style with me. But he welcomed me in like it was home and was with me every step of the way. He took his time to make sure that I was pleased with everything we had done so far and was also just a fun conversationalist. Im disappointed that he’s not on any of the posted photos above as he is as fantastic as he is. Highly recommend this salon to anyone that wants a second home and talented people working on their hair. I will soon be back to color it 🥳
Jessica is super delightful. Full of fun and really Intuitive about hair! I came to her from a fantastic hair salon that I only left because I moved state and I was feeling pretty unsure anyone else would be able to cut my hair like It was being cut. I have curly hair and half a shaved head! the first cut I was super happy... of all the ways it could have gone it went really well! After 2 more cuts and a few tweaks it was exactly how I liked it and I never looked back! I would definitely recommend her, she is vibrant and will always make you feel at home! Xxx
Jean at Thomas Taft has been my go-to lady for about 3 years now. Every time I go in to the salon, I get a friendly greeting and am offered a drink. The shampooing is always amazing, whether it is Jean or an assistant. And I love Jean. She is friendly and intelligent to talk with, and gives an very high quality, beautiful haircut that always reflects what I wanted. Plus, the price is so reasonable! Will be seeing Jean for many more years.
I had a horrible horrible haircut not long ago in a different city. I moved to nyc and looked at all of the options on the UES and decided to give Thomas Taft a try. So glad I did. Great place! Everybody was so professional and friendly from the front desk to the girl who washed my hair. Jean, my stylist, spent a whole 15 Minutes discussing my hair and what I wanted. So genuine and sweet. She took her time and showed me bumble and bumble products that would help me while putting them in my hair. Such a great cut and I will go back to her and the salon in general habitually!-Mallory
Laurie is an amazing stylist and I do not trust my hair with anyone but her! I followed Laurie from her previous salon to this amazing Thomas Taft Salon where everyone is incredible! I feel pampered and so relaxed here! My cuts and color are always impeccable. I would feel super confident sitting in any stylists chair here!
Fantastic friendly hair salon in the UES. Shlome rocks! Personalized attention, kind, considerate and fun. I’ve been coming here for about a year but since I was growing my hair out, Shlome had only given me color a few times. My first full cut with Shlome last week for me is a real test if he’s got the talent and he scored an A+++! My hair is thick, coarse with whacky wavy curls and he cut it perfectly to fit me. He gave me instructions on proper hair care (was using the wrong product that was drying my hair out) and I’ve been following it. Outside of my comfort zone but it’s working. I abso love it. He’s a gem and so is the salon.
I have sent no less than five others who all have adopted Thomas Taft as the only salon they trust in NYC. I can always rely on the staff to make my picture inspiration a reality while adapting it to suit my features. Thomas Taft has been my only salon for 5+ years and I have no intention to ever stop going!
Got my hair cut by Jessica on Friday and I must say, she really nailed it! I always get worried that when I ask for a trim that theyll cut too much off but she listened to me and was careful to meet my expectations. Ive gotten a ton of compliments on my hair and she also did a good job recommending products and explaining how to use them properly. Thanks Jessica! Will definitely be back for my next trim.
Love it here. Such a great atmosphere with cool decor. Jessica is the best stylist Ive been to in New York. Actually styles your hair at the end and even tought me how to style my own hair. The bumble and bumble products are amazing as well. Ive become obsessed with products since going to this salon!
I absolutely love this salon! From the stylists to the products they never fail to deliver. When I wanted to get a pixie but I was nervous to just have anyone cut it. I had a consolation at Thomas Taft and they made me feel comfortable and completely ready to rock a pixie. Ive never loved a haircut more than I did when I got it done here! Thank you guys so much for turning me into a rockstar.
The worst blow dry ever at the most expensive price, over $50. The whole styling took less than 10 minutes of what I could do myself in 5 minutes. So they charged $10 per minute of incompetence. I explicitly told the stylist ‘not straight, natural curls, give volume’ and what I got was the straightest, most boring hair ever! At least ten times worse than when I do it myself. I should start charging $50 for 5 minutes of my blow dry!!!
I went in for a Keratin treatment and balayage - both of which I was EXTREMELY disappointed with. The Keratin treatment (which I have done many times in the past) did nothing to reduce my frizz - if anything it made it worse. The color is where it gets really bad. After leaving the first appointment with literally no change in my color (after 3 hours of processing) I decided to give her another shot (because she was very nice) however I should have never returned. My hair ended up 4 different colors and was so bad I could not even go to work the next day. They offered to tone it however I knew that would not fix the problem - I was also confirmed by the stylist who ended up fixing my hair that a toner would not have been the solution. I needed to have my hair completely redone - including the keratin.Whats worse? They REFUSED to give me any refund. This is absolutely insane in terms of customer service and I would caution anyone who cares about their hair to go here.
Jessica is an amazing hairdresser. When she was in Sydney she cut my hair for the full 4 years she was here and Im struggling to find someone whom is as talented and amazing with hair as she is and that I trust fully. Always creating new funky, retro, stylish haircuts.
Melyssa has been cutting my hair for 10+ years. I dont trust anyone else to cut my hair. The times that I have had someone else cut my hair - my husbands work requires us to move a lot - I could immediately tell the difference. Nothing compares to the quality and luxury that Melyssa and her team at Thomas Taft provide. I recommend Thomas Taft 100%.
Long time hair cuttee, first time reviewer. This is more of an ode to Jessica who, once I found her in Sydney, I was absolutely loyal to. I had been to a number of salons in Sydney, often coming out with a generic girl next door cut that seems so popular here. Jessica connected with who I was immediately and shaped/framed/cut, whatever word fits best, my hair that finally helped me feel more comfortable in my own skin. And did we have laugh exploring different styles!! With Jessica, its not just the final result that made me happy but the journey to find it! Miss her. When Im next in NYC, I know who Im visiting to get spoilt in the chair!
Getting my haircut makes me anxious and quiet. But I really needed a haircut and my own skills weren’t cutting it, pun intended. I was suggested Thomas Taft via Reddit and I chose the salon bc of the promise of GusGus, the French bulldog. He wasn’t the highlight of the visit, Jessica’s skills were, sorry Gus. Thank you for listening to me and giving me a great cut and suggesting products to nutrish my hair.
WORST COLOR EXPERIENCE/ BAD BUSINESS PRACTICE!!!!! Now in need of a color correction. I came in to refresh my highlights and tone. Walked out with ORANGE tinted hair. Worst color of my life. The best part? After posting it was a no fee service (I would model for a class), DEMANDED 40 for giving me orange, warm roots. I told them ad said no fee. Told me it was for the toner. You mean the extra toner because YOU made my hair orange (which still left it orange)??? Payment for you processing my hair again with toner, which was not even the solution? Then was told the ad had a typo, their error, but still a fee? Come on lol. Finally, told me that the assistant claimed she sent a text message contrary to the ad, informing me of the fee. This should be good. I asked to see this message, because I actually have the full conversation. The assistant goes to the back, comes back with no text message, and says no problem, sorry for wasting your time. So in the end wanted to charge me money for not properly monitoring the apprentice and letting her ruin my haircolor. PRICELESS!!!!Apparently, based on other reviews, Im not the first to have such a negative experience. SHAME ON THIS AWFUL PLACE!
We got to this place at the UES to ask for the price of a men’s hair cut. They told us that the minimum price was 45$, but they didn’t have availability. Then the lady told us to hold on for; a second lady came and looked at us in a very weird way. They looked at the screen for a couple seconds without saying anything, we were waiting right there and suddenly they looked at us again in very disrespectful way and said: NO! It seemed like she didn’t want to cut the hair for 45$. You should treat all your customers or future customers in a better way. You never know who is he person who you are talking to. Thank you anyways! Bad service!!!
Made an appointment last Thursday morning (same day as snowstorm) -- woman who made appointment assured me that they would be working all day after I asked if they might close early. I later walked 20 blocks in the snowstorm for my 1:30 appt only to find a note on their door saying sorry we had to close for the day -- we tried reaching out to anyone with an appointment. Well no you didnt. No one called me to let me know.I then left a voicemail for the manager to call me back and 4 days later, Ive never heard back. I understand safety first and that weather is unpredictable but Im left with a really poor impression of this salon.

2022-07-13Have had a great experience at Thomas Taft Salon UES, currently have had Uros as my stylist, when I decided to go short and keep my salt and pepper. My hair feels and looks great. I’m always welcomed with great smiles, conversation and great music.

2021-07-21I had a LOVELY experience getting my highlights and cut here. Vicky did my hair and she did a great job with the color and cut. I have short curly hair so I’m always looking for someone who is experienced and can shape my curls well, and she did such a great job. Will definitely be coming back for future cuts and color here! plus they offer delicious coffee and wine while getting my hair done. Great experience 10/10 recommend!

2021-07-20Sometimes going to a salon for a hair cut is not always a pleasant experience either the stylists dont know how to work with the texture and type of hair I have nor do they pay attention when I tell them how I would like my hair cut. Not to mention that they do not even try to make you feel comfortable and work with multiple clients besides me then rush me out. However this was not the case with Thomas Taft UES.From the moment I booked my reservation I knew that the Thomas Taft Salon on Upper East Side was the right one for me. The person I spoke with to schedule my appointment was very kind and did her best to try and get me into a time slot that worked for me and a stylist that was experienced in working with my hair type (Jean). On the day of my appointment I was greeted warmly and made to feel very comfortable as I waited. Upon meeting Jean I was impressed by her friendly personality (we had a nice conversation) and her knowledge about my hair type and the best style for me. I might also add that she did not work on multiple clients besides me and listen to how I wanted my hair cut and cut it like I asked her to.A few weeks ago I had my second appointment and it was awesome. Thomas Taft Salon UES and Jean are totally the right fit for me and I look forward to my next appointment.

2022-06-05Welcoming staff but chaotic and slightly grungy environment. A zen, pampered experience this was not.Robes seem to be a precious commodity as only a small wash cloth was provided after the hair wash. Be prepared to sit in the “lounge” with water dripping down your neck and clothes.I got the Milbon treatment and a blow dry. The website said $100 for a blow dry and a treatment but they charged me $10 more than the online a la carte prices (supposedly $66 + $40). I was running late to dinner so just paid and left. Also I got the full Milbon (not express) but they didn’t do the dry/steam step. However it was a fantastic blow dry and they do use nice Bumble and Bumble products.

2022-07-28I went to Francessca and the salon for the first time for color and cut. Francessca went above and beyond to make to make my hair look exactly how I had envisioned. Highly recommend!! Thank you!

2019-01-04My hair looks so bad. Tess cut it. She is very sweet but I will NEVER go back to a Thomas Taft salon. My hair is uneven, which Tess kept insisting was layers. The front is long and the back is uneven and short and when I put it into a pony tail my hair looks stupid. Terrible job! I did this via classpass and am so livid. Also the nourishing treatment is just a shampoo, nothing special. Next time I will pay the money and get a haircut at a legit salon. Not worth the classpass points to have your hair look like a child cut it.

2021-11-12I have been here several times, each time with a different stylist due to my schedule. I have been very happy with each stylist and love the cut and color. Today I saw Tess and the last time I saw Shlomi. The salon is no-frills but the service is great. 10/10 recommend.

2021-07-31I have been going to Jean for about 5 years. I have curly hair which makes finding someone who knows how to handle my hair a bit difficult! Not every stylist understands how to color or cut curly hair. Jean does! I have been getting highlights from her and every time I do, I get compliments on my hair. She also got me to do layers with my hair- something I never ever thought I would do after having a different stylist (not at this salon) butchered it years ago. Jean did a great job! I have recommended at least 5 people to go to TT and ask for Jean and now they are life long customers! All of them went with different hair texture types and requests and Jean crushed them! I also LOVE the salon in general because of the products they use, the amazing head massages you get and GUS!!! I friggen love that dog.I can’t recommend this salon and Jean enough.

2021-09-23Shlomo is amazing!! I told him and showed him an idea of what I wanted, he gave me his opinion, and started cutting away so confidently that I didn’t have any anxiety during the haircut appointment. My hair turned out PERFECTLY and was exactly what I asked for!!! I’ll definitely be back and would recommend this place to others looking for a great cut!
