Terrible experience. Took my Canyon in for a premium tune up. Nothing I asked for was done. Needed to take to get drive chain relubed after first ride. Didn’t fix carbon creak. Front wheel came out of alignment second ride, the bolts were loose enough to back out by hand. Went back to store complain, they offered nothing but an apology. Waste of $200
Excellent shop! Fixed a flat in record time tonight and gave some helpful advice on bike maintenance without being too pushy. Knowledgeable and friendly staff. I have bought a road bike through them and used their mechanics for a number of excellent tuneups over the years.
Ive been a customer of Toga since the 80s. I recently moved back to NY and bought an e bike and need my brake hose swapped out for a longer one. Will, the manager made it clear that he didnt really want to do the work, but would and gave me a very high price ($100), and said I would need to leave it for a few days. When asked if he could do better he again said he couldnt as it was a lot of work hed rather not do and said maybe another store would give me a better price. Went a 10 minute ride away and got it done for $40 in one hour. Toga unfortunately lost a customer of over 35 years. Go to innovation on 106 Street off Columbus Ave if you want to deal with a store that places value on customer relations. Buh bye Toga. P.s. the other employees were very pleasant and helpful. It wass Will who chased me away
Amazing bike shop! Excellent customer service. The employees and very knowledgable and very helpful. Didnt get his name, but the employee with Dreadlocks was soo helpful, he stopped eating his lunch just to help us out with an issue we had with a bike we bought. He deserves a raise!
I visited a couple of shops around NYC to try and see if anyone would walk me through bike options and help me get started. I found the first few I visited to be a bit snobbish, which was off-putting for someone new to cycling, but gave Toga a chance on the recommendation of a friend and was happily surprised. Will gave me a thorough walk through of all of the bikes that fit my price range and needs, patiently answered my dozens of questions, and never once made me feel pressured into buying a bike or foolish about my lack of knowledge. All of the staff are really friendly and great with letting you take your time and take bikes out for test rides.I went back a week later and purchased a Giant Escape 3 - even though its not scheduled to ship to the store for another two weeks, Toga graciously allowed me to borrow an extra bike they had on hand to ride around until my new bike arrives so that I dont have to keep clonking around on Citibikes.Very happy with my visit - will definitely be returning there for tuneups and possible upgrades in the future!
Bought my Giant bike here a few years ago and had a good fitting then. I think the Toga staff has gotten less helpful over time. Just took it in for a tuneup and, while everyone was busy, they were not interested in explaining what had been done to the bike or how the new quick-release tire mechanism worked. Plus they forgot to do stuff from original order (waited another 25 minutes...). Not eager to go back.
Ive always strolled around the shop and looked at their awesome selection of bikes. They have a range of bikes from the casual rider to the more advanced rider. My fiance and I bike ride a lot, but I move at a snails pace (joggers and kids pass me-its awkward). I thought Id be ridiculous by asking the employee why I move so slow. I pretty much assumed I just needed to push harder. The employee listened to my concerns and wanted to understand and resolve the issue. He explained a lot about bikes to me and why I might be having an issue. He taught me a lot and advised me to return with the bike so he could take a look.About an hour later I returned with my bike, still feeling like this is ridiculous because it probably really is me. Another gentleman there was quick to listen to my situation and check out the bike. He added air to my tires and identified the issue.I am so glad I took the time to speak with someone at Toga. They were extremely knowledgeable about bikes and eager to understand and fix my bike. The next day I biked 20 miles at a much quicker pace!I absolutely recommend them if youre newer to the bike world and want some excellent guidance on purchasing the right bike or need repairs!
Very happy with my purchase. The woman, Haley, who helped was great and walked me through everything. They didnt have the particular bike I was after but I was just glad I was able to find a bike anywhere in NYC right now. I will definitely be a repeat customer at some point and you also cant complain about free lifetime tune ups.
Will who is the pro bike fitter is extremely helpful in the confusing process of buying your first road bike. With so many options to chose from he took the time to go over everything, riding style too the type of trips I do. He even took the time to properly fit me to a bike making many finely tuned adjustments. Once he saw me in action he was able to recommend and select the perfect bike. I could not possibly be happier with my experience.
I HIGHLY and wholeheartedly recommend Toga bikes! After weeks of searching for the perfect hybrid bike, Toga was the only place that provided reasonable prices, a short timeframe to receive the bike, and the best customer service!I actually went to Toga bike, in the first place, because Gabriel was so kind and helpful on the phone. He took time to answer all my questions, ask me details about what I was looking for, provides some suggestions, etc. When I arrived at the store, he was just as engaged and patient!Although I was given a 4-5 time frame before receiving my bike, they called me TWO weeks later letting me know that if I wanted to take the same bike in a different color. I picked up my brand new Giant bike the next day!Overall, it was a seamless and enjoyable customer experience! Gabriel is a HUGE asset to the team, and you should definitely ask for him when you visit the shop! He’ll be just as excited as you will be about your bike/ gear, and he’ll surpass all your expectations in terms of service :)
I decide to take a Ride from Yonkers to Brooklyn so I dusted off the Vintage Bike and went for a Ride. I wanted to get my Bike tuned up So I went to Google and this Place was recommended so I decided to give this a try. I was Greeted by a women who took time to explain the 3 tune up options. I also mentioned I was in the Market for a newer Bike and from my Explanation was recommended a Hybrid. They didn’t have any at the Moment but was told in would arrive by Friday I Believe. I Walked around an Noticed a Montecci Mountain Bike. I Really Like the appearance of the Bike so a Young Man Started Tell me about the Bike. As he continued to Speak I realized this was the Bike for me. I noticed it didn’t have Pedals so he started explaining the reason so he started advising me on what I needed for the Bike. As he was telling me the prices and comparing so items he was told to help the next customer? I wasn’t finished making my decision and was asked at least 3 times was I ready to check out? I was trying to Purchase this Bike and was Doing Calculations in my head but didn’t get the same attention some of the other customers were. You don’t rush a $1000 dollar decision especially when your haven’t Rode so I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t forgetting something. Needless to say it started Good but then I guess they Felt I was taking to much time and wasn’t as valuable as the other Customers.Very Disappointing Experience from a Store that was Recommended a one of the Best.
Worst bike shop I ever been. Had problems before and I insisted to use the terrible service and of course got disappointed again.Wil the manager does not have any respect for people /clients always giving an horrible serviceA lot of my friends told me before they hated this bike shopIf yoy need a bike service do not go thereYou gonna be treated really bad and be really disappointed with everything they offer there
So yeah, bike shortage in NYC. Called around to a couple places and Toga was the only shop that said come by and well have you look at some things, and they ended up having one in stock that I rode home today!! My salesperson Will was the awesomest - super friendly, and very attentive to what I was saying. When he said he could shorten the handle bars, I was SOLD. Thank you thank you thank you for making buying my first bike ever an easy and comfortable experience!
Rude and condescending over the phone so I didnt make it in the store. I called and said outright, I dont know a lot about bikes, but I would like to purchase one. Im 51 and looking for something in the $200 range. I was immediately told We dont sell Toys R Us bikes here. How rude, Im 32! He told me Our bikes start at $450, OK? as if he were dismissing me and rushing me off the phone. Again, I dont know a lot about bikes, I would have been okay with that price range too if someone would have taken the time to educate and suggest something appropriate for me. Instead, he rushed me off the phone telling me he was busy with other customers.
I went to toga on Thursday 7/30 with bike rims with me that I had bought direct from the manufactures with the intention to buy schwalbe pro one wheels. While I was there we discussed the tubeless tape that was already on the rims.Toga said we should have just had them order the wheels and put them together because they were experts and can make the process easier. He then told me they dont have schwalbe tires in stock but I should get Continental GP 5000 as they were a better option. I have the rims in my hand during this. I but the Continental for $206 and when I get home they dont fit. No big deal. When I went back on Friday 7/31 they tell me they dont refund and Ill only get store credit and point at a sign that was not in my view during the initial purchase. I didnt pick these wheels I was advised to buy them and the employee I was returning to was the same employee that had recommended the tires the day before. Why would I want store credit to a place that treats customers this way? Im praying this review reaches people and they think twice about going to Toga because when a professional recommends something and then it isnt compatible there is no better grounds for a refund and they had no interest in entertaining my case.
I bought a Cannondale bike for $800 in March right before the pandemic shutdowns and paid in full. I then moved out of town before I picked up the bike (2 weeks after paying) and called to ask Toga to keep it for me until August; Will (the associate I was dealing with) confirmed that this is ok.When I called them in September, it turned out that they had sold my bike. I now have to wait till December to get the same bike I ordered.
What an awesome experience at this store. Ive been to at least 8 shops looking for a Cannondale Quick bike. Not only did this store have a supply of it, but they were so knowledagable. Ive been to so many stores and they were not able to provide me with the knowledge Toga has provided me. Theyre very patient and ill definitely be back. (Actually came back the next day to purchase a bike rack for my trunk.)
Toga was today and has been a staple since I started riding MTB in 92. Today I went in with a buddy of mine to update to a 1 by drive train. Ill call him Mr H with cool dread suggested I do the deluxe tune up instead of what was thing off so I get my new parts added to my plus the tune which made it less expensive, who does that...? TOGA, thats who.Shout out to a mom and pop store like TOGA doing it right for all these years and surviving the pandemic. My go to shop moving forward... and I live in Queens.
NOT RELIABLE STOREI called this shop and asked, are you fixing an electric bike? When I went to the shop, I said, can you fix it today? The man who greeted me said yes. He then told me that I had to pay $ 27 and they would look at the problem and tell me what happened, and then if I confirmed the price of the problem and they would fix it. Then they took my bike down and while I was waiting, they told me that they have a bike to repair, so they said they would call me in a few hours for my bike. No one called me that day and then I went home while hanging around the shop. I waited for their calls the next day until 5 pm but no one called. Then I called, asked about my bike, and they told me they found the problem, but they said they couldnt fix it because there were no parts. I took my bike and went to another cyclist for $ 55 within 2 hours solved the problem of my bike.THANK YOU FOR HELPING ME GUYS.
Hands down the worst experience Ive had with a bike shop in the city. I took my bike in on a Friday morning, upon entering I was told by some kid who looked completely lost (and all of 14 years old) that it would take 24 hours for a basic tune up. Fine, cool, whatever. Then I was turned over to Kelvin (who I have to give credit to because he seemed to be the only person with any sense of how to run the shop there that day). He then alerted me that it would in fact take until Tuesday due to a back up on work orders. Again, fine, cool, whatever. I pay my bill in full, leave the bike, and go about my day. When I returned on Wednesday morning to retrieve my bike, there still seemed to be a swirl of confusion around the store and was asked my name multiple times by the same person before sending another kid who seemed to be spending his summer off at the shop to get my bike downstairs. After 10 minutes, he comes back, I take my bike, and go on my merry way.Within 10 minutes I get a call claiming that I havent paid my bill, and that I need to return. I grabbed my bike on a lunch break during the week so returning was not an option, but I did offer to pull over and check my bank account to ensure that my debit card had gone through (which it had, and I confirmed verbally that I could see a debit to my bank account dated 6/12/20). The person on the other end of the phone said we have no record of you paying, can you please come back so we can clear it out? --- clear what out, dude? If I have proof that Ive paid, but you dont, that is your problem, not mine. No customer is going to come back so that you can charge them another $100 for a basic tune up.After being told he would check the records again and call me back, there was silence. Wanting to make sure the air was cleared, I took the initiative to call the store back to be sure everything was settled. I was informed that indeed, they had not found record. My biggest mistake was not asking for a receipt (was offered to have it emailed and it still hasnt shown up in my inbox), because had I known that the result would be me screen-shotting an image of my bank account and redacting all financial information other than the charge to their shop and TEXTING IT to some random employee, I would have definitely done so. The person on the other end of the phone then laughed at the fact that I had redacted my personal information and we hung up.Both times I went in, the place seemed understaffed and customers underserved. Im all about supporting local and thought I was making the right choice by doing so, but I learned quickly that was not the right choice and I will not return to Toga. I would also suggest you steer clear unless you want to be utterly confused by your entire experience and walk out nervous to have left a (likely) expensive belonging in the hands of a disorganized mess.
Great selection of very expensive and rare bikes. Walked in with my girlfriend and the rep went directly into a sales pitch about the bike and features- didnt ask any questions to us at all, and the second he knew we werent necessarily going to buy today, he disappeared and left us on the floor. Any good bike shop should know its about the long-term and actually getting to know your customers, not just regurgitating the specs of a bike. Two stars for a wide variety of bikes and a good location, but the customer experience was very lackluster.
I’ve tried shopping here a few times but it’s not worth it. Inventory is okay at best, if you like a very small selection of items filled w dust and broken boxes. Clothing faces the same problem, very litte to no variation, as well as clothes that have been there for 2-3 seasons now. You would hope that there are redeeming factors but that is not the case. The owner or manager, Will, is a tool. Rude, condensending, and insecure. The service is atrocious (my derailleur was bent, small details were not listened to, and they tried slipping in some charges that did not apply.) OH and to make it better there are NO REFUNDS, EXCHANGES, or ANYTHING.Thanks but no thanks guys, i’ll gladly take my business to 72nd or any of the Trek store, who offer full refunds, exchanges within 30 days, and quite frankly are corporate owned— which just Trumps small business in terms of what they can offer consumers... I’m all for supporting my local shop but, some businesses will just go out of business (as you may have seen) because they can’t get with the times. I wish you the best guys, what goes around comes around!
Came in with a question about servicing a bike part. Sales person not interested in looking into it, just gave me a feeling they dont care about it when its work for them and they dont make a quick profit. Left me mid sentence to serve a customer buying a new item. Too many good alternatives around NY to be giving them my money. Wont be back.
Ezra was super helpful. Dont know much about bikes, was buying my first one and he gave me great advice and was honest about what I needed. A lot of reviews on here speak to poor service and I can say its just a small store that gets busy and cant help everyone at once. Id recommend this place if you need anything bike related and have a little patience. Nice to still have businesses like this in New York.
Customer service is definitely subpar here. Staff are overly confident, not approachable or friendly and lacking warmth. Despite the store being empty, you get the sense that theyre too busy and have better S#*t to do. Advice: Every customer represents an opportunity. Be a little more tactful in how you approach customers and create a better experience for them. Ive been into this store multiple times and not sure why I keep going back. Also not sure why I just bought a pair of $200 bike shoes from them. Couldnt get them faster online and prefer to support local and small businesses. Just a shame these guys arent a little more focused on creating a great customer experience.
This bike store was located close to my home and also next to west side highway. I went to Toga to get some inner tubes and also to check out my bike and figure out why my bike was making a clanking noise every time I was biking.First issue when entering store- the staff was extremely hard to get help from. I kept trying to flag down a staff member. I didnt even go during a busy time of day.Second issue- the people who do tuneups or inspect bikes are on basement level. The staff on first floor took my bike and wrote down my issues with the clanking noise. I couldnt interact or speak to the people who would actually look over my bike.Third issue- I received my bike few days later after I awaited a phone call to see if it was ready. I just went in to get the bike myself. The sales staff person told me he thought the clanking noise was from an imbalanced wheel and offered to sell me a brand new wheel.I bought the wheel and tried out the bike and went on my way.I found out after biking the bike again that the clanking noise was not fixed at all there was a broken bike bracket. I dont know if they broke my bike frame. I brought the bike back to Toga and politely ask why they hadnt seen the broken bracket. They didnt apologize and refused to refund me the inspection fee. They instead just offered to refund me the new bike wheel they just sold me.This bike shops incompetence is just beyond me. They did a whole bike inspection and didnt figure out there was a cracked bike bracket. I dont know if they cracked it themselves while handling the bike. Please do not shop at this bike store. They are awful in every way- staff, service and care.
*Bait & switch attempt* One of the worse experiences I have ever had. I ordered a specific bike letting them know due to Covid19 I would like this bike so I could ride to my mothers for mothers day. She told me not to come by transportation or uber. So I wanted to surprise her. They first esured me they could indeed order the bike. I was told they would call me to let me know when it would be availible and esured me if it was not in or assembled I could get a borrow one. I never got the call. When I followed up the morning after the day I expected a call I was told they would call me back. They never did. When I called in the evening a rep says that bike was not availible for order but they have another I might like. I asked for a refund. Luckily I used Amex. But if I was a young person using a debit card or using limited amount of credit, these monies are now in limbo. I was told to call my bank I would see the refund. I called Amex they said they dont see it as of yet. Sooooo, if I were in a situation finacially where I didnt have the credit else where or monies had I used a debit card like some might do they gladly charged $500 dollars without a care in the world or proffesionalism one should expect. DONT BUY HERE.
I wish I would had read the negative reviews before coming here. Complete waste of time, I should had gone with my instincts after talking to a staff member on the phone before coming out here. The person told me that I would have to come in because they were very busy. The guy in the front without checking anything tells be he does not have the exact brand and model number that they have advertised on their website and then when I told him any model will do as long as it fits a 30mm spindle, tells the female staff they dont have any and without checking or asking me if I would like to order it just goes on with his business. The female staff were more receptive but he was of no help. Warning guys , go elsewhere, dont waste your time coming here. Then one staff tells me, sorry the website has not been updated in a while. This shop is complete garbage. I only put one star because it wouldnt let me post anything without a star or they would had got zero stars.
Great local bike shop -- Ive lived across the street for years and finally had a chance to stop by and buy and bike. Totally helpful, put me in the perfect bike for my uses. Of course youre not going to find every product on the Internet here and prices are going to be higher than Amazon, but in trade you get helpful staff who are cyclists themselves, and thats worth a ton. I was in and out with a brand new bike in less than 20 minutes vs. what would have been hours and hours of research/decisions buying online.Very happy with the Toga crew!
This bike shop was recommended by a bicycle enthusiast. I havent bought a bike in years and consider myself very lucky to have found this shop. The gentleman that helped me took his time to explain the difference between the lower cost bikes and the costlier ones. I was also allowed to test ride the bikes around the block! VERY important. I had to wait a week till my bike came in because the one I test rode was already reserved for someone else. Well worth it. I recommend this shop. The other negative reviews here are probably written by the competition.
Toga bike staff has been really helpful for me in making a decision in what type of bike to get. They were there to answer my questions, and allowing me to test ride as many bikes as I wanted. Unfortunately, I went with another store because they didnt have the brand I ultimately decided on. Because of their friendly service, in the future I will come to them for repairs, advice, or other products.
This is the worst bike shop I have ever been to. Ive been riding over ten years, own six bikes, I commute, race, ride road bikes, mountain bikes, and ride around 10,000 miles per year. From one cyclist to another, avoid this shop. Trust that I am doing you a favor by warning you to stay away.I came in here to get for two jobs - get a new wheel built and get an existing wheel fixed. On the new wheel build, they sold me an overpriced, low-quality wheel that hasnt worked correctly since I bought it, despite Toga trying to fix it several times. On the repair to the existing wheel, they ruined it, completely destroying the bearings and hub.The staff has been extremely hard to deal with, as theyre not very knowledgeable and seem generally more interested in selling needlessly expensive bikes to novice cyclists. In fact, the guy who sold me the faulty wheel was fired by the time I came back to get the bad wheel repaired. The new staff member I then dealt with laughed at how poorly constructed the wheel was that the fired guy had sold me.Ask around NYC, and youll find that most experienced cyclists avoid this shop. Repairs are astonishingly bad.
The folks here were the absolutely loveliest—so very kind and helpful and were able to find a super reasonably priced bike that was exactly what I needed. They have an awesome selection of quality used & affordable bikes! The staff really went the extra mile and I will absolutely be coming back here again. Thank you, Toga team!
I bought my Cannondale CAAD 9 at Toga Westside about 10 years ago. One reason is lifetime maintenance. It turns out it is very basic maintenance and every year, including this year they upsell me, this year for over $200 for tires, tubes and chain. (The salesman tried to sell me a $700 Garmin even though I told him I had a bike app on my phone, and he tried to sell me new shoes and helmet even though he never saw them., hard sell.) I went for the $200 even though my Grandson pointed out the prices for what I bought was double the price at a nice bike shop 8 blocks away. Worse, when my Grandson went to pick up the bike, they wanted to add on a charge for labor even though my Grandson and I clearly remember that they said the price was all inclusive at the time of the sale. Worse, worse the back wheel rubs against the brake pads. Never again!
The appeal of this store is without question. However, the service can be piss poor to fair. Yesterday and today (3/25/13) are examples of the former. I came into the shop with a general question regarding the width, reach, drop? also the take on the flat tops vs. the round bars? The guy on the first day told me that he didnt know much about road bike handlebars, so he felt more comfortable asking me to come back today. Fair. I did and the expert didnt want to answer my questions but simply put me up for a bike fit. and the other guy who sent me away yesterday made the obnoxious statement that he sent me away the previous day because I did not have my bike for the fit test. Toga, youre right its my fault. This type of passive aggressive service sucks. and its unfortunate, cause the market demand for bikes and service alike is so large in NYC, the vendors do not have to worry about service. If you are in the market, take the time rent a car, and visit one of the smaller shops upstate or across the river in New Jersey.
Love this place. I recently went to a different bike shop because I needed something quickly adjusted and Toga wasnt open for another hour. Will never do that again. The other store told me I needed a new derailer for over $200 and then tried to upsell me with a tuneup for $120 and updating the software to my electronic shifters for $75. I left that store and went to Toga and they fixed the derailer for $10 and no upsell. Havent had an issue with the derailer since. These guys are professional and honest. They dont try to sell you repairs or stuff you dont need. Will always come here, even though it is much further from my apartment.
Toga was so helpful! For sure the best bike shop and best place to go for anything bike related in NYC! Gino was wonderful and very helpful, answered all my questions and helped me pick out a bike and equipment that best fit my needs and my college-sized budget. Toga also provides free service for the lifetime of the bike you but at their shop, which is a big relief for me when thinking about where to go for repairs/tuneups/etc. Im so thankful for them and all their help!
I have to comment on both the people and the shop. I have been going to the shop for about 6 years and have brought the shop significant business throughout that time. I want to thank Tony and Chris for their years of assistance, help and support. They have been marvelous. I want to thank Wendy for keeping my bike up to shape. As for the shop, I have no intention of ever patronizing the shop again. I had a Quintana Roo on layaway for about a year. I was in the shop a number of times to see it. While I say it was a Shram Red component set (which was the initial draw on the bike) they say it was not. This past weekend, the bike was sold out from under me without any real explanation. While the shop is offering a discount on another bike, the discount is not uncommon to cyclists and it is my position that they should not be making additional money on a sale when I am certain that they made money on the bike OF MINE that they sold. I would recommend that if you are a committed Toga loyalist you do significant research before purchasing any major equipment there. I would also speak with Tony and/or Chris if you want the most honest response. I also strongly suggest that you look around at other shops. I, unfortunately, will not be going back there.
I had a wonderful experience at Toga, where I was able to order a new triathlon bike over the phone with Gino. As promised the bike was delivered and built to order. At pickup, Gino was really helpful and talked me through the process of registering my bike with Cervelo, which I had never done before. He also helped set the bike up with new pedals, without any pressure to upsell to more expensive Keos. Additionally, he kicked in a 10% discount. Then, I got to talk to the owner and we traded stories about the cyclists and triathletes in the community with whom Toga had affiliations, like TriLatino, which oversees a Juniors program that provides high school students of color the opportunity to enter the tri- world. The store is well-organized and the folks there are all considerate and helpful.
Best bike shop in Manhattan. For maintenance and repairs, only store I trust. Owner is a real biker/racer and you feel it when they take care of your bike.Yes, some staff at the counter / in sales are not as knowledgeable as enthusiastic amateurs that some of us are. But the real long-term staff here is a bunch if bike lovers. Is it expensive ? Yes, but remember rent / salaries / competition of online store. Am I happy to have this store around when I need it as amazon cannot tune-up my bike the week before a race ? Yes.Couple of points:1. broke a zipp carbon wheel, they returned it for me to the factory despite the fact I didnt buy it in their store.2. pack and shipped ny bike in cardbox to Hawaii for a race. No issue whatsoever. With regards to bike shops, we all have a choice. Help them survive or let them disappear. Id like for Toga bikes to survive ... they deserve it !
Bought a brand new Cervelo P2 bike with electronic Di2 shifters at the shop 6 weeks ago. Paid full retail, almost $4200 out the door. We purchased the 51cm bike at first, but when my wife went in to confirm the size, one of their reps (Will) tried extremely hard to get her to buy the 48cm floor model. He tried for over 30 minutes to fit the bike to her saying the bike was the right size even though her elbows kept bumping her knees with the seat all the way back and aero bars fully extended. He was adamant that this was the right size and told her repeatedly that was the right size. The event concluded with him saying to my wife I hope you learned your lesson by not having him size the bike for me. We called back after this and forced the shop to buy us the 51cm bike even though they said they wanted us in the 48cm bike. When we picked-up & paid for the bike we had to ask for the charger for the Di2 automatic shifters. The tech handed us the charger and off we went.Glad we went with the 51cm bike because according to my wifes Ironman coach who fitted her bike to her said I cant picture how the 48cm would have worked. It would have been a nightmare.Anyway, fast forward 3 weeks, and on the first attempt to charge the battery for the shifters, we notice the battery wont charge. We live well over an hour away from the shop, but have no choice but to go back (bike and all) in order to get this fixed. We go back to the bike store only to learn in about a minute from another tech that the original tech gave us the completely wrong charger! Whaaat??!! So now I spent over a 1/2 day again going over to the shop that Im already annoyed at to learn that they really messed up and also gave us the wrong charger!!Terrible customer service - not happy and do not recommend.
Called in to make sure my bike would be ready to be picked up before traveling to get to the store. Upon arriving, told it wouldn’t be be ready until the following day. This is three days after they verbally agreed to have it done.Worth looking for other options for more accountable service.
Toga is one of the small group of really great bike shops. The shop owner Luis Vieira is an ex racer like most of the staff. He has been in the business for +20 years and will always try to do whats best for the customer. I have a collection of bikes - everything from a 1982 Lotus Supreme to a 2015 S-WORKS Venge (which I purchased at Toga). The staff is awesome - and will always try to recommend whats best for the customer and the situation. Having said that - knowledge means a lot. The more you know the more you realize how experienced they are.
I like the store as they have awesome products but was disapointed not to say annoyed with staff trying to scam me.Had purchased quite a few products in there.Ive broken my shimano dura ace chain on my ultegra chainring after 5000 miles.Make no mistake I love cycling and read and search a lot about everything cycling related.I know loads of mechanics and some really professional good ones.I can do all sort of services on my bike myself but since I moved to NYC I have no space to have cycling tools or equipment so unfortunately everytime I need something else apart from regular lube and cleaning I have to rely on bike shops.Anyway, after buying a new chain which they of course charged me top dollar plus instalation as I had no other option to continue riding on that day, the sales guy told that I needed to immediately replace my ultegra crankset as my chain had destroyed my chainrings.I acted surprise but decided to play his game so Ive listened to his claims. He came up with all this technical explanation that the teeths had worn out completely and needs replacement urgently and that it was my luck day since they only had one left at the store for $170 bucks plus tax.At no point, he suggested I should only replace the chainring that cost around 20 bucks but instead that I should replaced the entire crankset.I am not sure why I would need to replace the crank arm as well apart from the waste of money. While he was talking, I check the distance between my new chain and the rings and it was all the way to the end, meaning had no gaps therefore it was absolutely fine.I also rode the bike twice since and my new chain is perfectly fine with my still long way to go ultegra 6800 chainrings. The bottom line was that if you do not know much about mechanics they will scam you try upselling stuff you do not need.Be careful.
Great place to pick up some bars and offers great water with ice cubes and air pumps out front. The store is also kind enough to offer use of bathrooms for us cyclists making our training rides up north or south. Great helpful staff and the mechanics do a good job of tuning up or fixing minor bike problems. Nice varied inventory of items and the store is large to carry a variety of bikes.
I purchased a 2017 MTB there and was told to break it in and bring it back for quick tune up/check up ro make sure bike is performing to standards, a wee goes by and no call from them, so i called and after a brief hold they said oh your bike is ready, well thanks I guess. Thats not all they never touched the bike, the gears still had leaves and twigs jammed in them, chain was dirty, the main issue with my rear shock never addressed, they said oh it acts that way because its a brain shock, to my surprise I find out from specialized that its not a brain shock,Def not a good place to bring your business!!!!!
I biked from Toronto to Manhattan, and wanted to go back home with a train. However Amtrak does not allow you to cross the border with your bike. For some reason I did not see that info on their website. So I was paniced and tried to find a place where I can get a box to put my bike in so that I can either take it with me or ship it. I found Toga through googling. When I explained the situation all staff were listening to me and tried to assist me. Especially Adam, he cared about me as if it was his problem. Since shipping will cost as much as an airplane fare, I decided to carry it to the airport. He finished packing in an hour as he promissed and he even gave me a box tape just in case when it excesses and I need to take things out from the box and repack. I had asked him to put my tent and a sleeping back in the box. I never write anything on review but Adam, your service moved my heart and it was the best. I checked in successfully, the box weighed about 45lb.
Ill preface this review by reminding everyone that Toga is an authorized Reynolds retailer.I brought my rear Reynolds dv3k to their shop to be trued after I noticed two spokes popped. I was told by a sale associate that it would be a quick fix and to come back in 30 mins. I ended up coming back a hour later just to have to wait in the store for an additional 30 mins. Once they handed me my wheel, I paid and was on my way back to my apartment only to have a spoke pop the second I tried to my my wheel back on my bike. The mechanic should have noticed these problematic spokes when working on my wheel but I guess he either lacks an attention to detail or neglected to inform me of the failed spokes. So, I headed back down to the shop to have at round 2. This time they tell me they want to keep my wheel over night to have the head mechanic have a look at it. I thought, Ok, now were getting somewhere. The next day I decided to call Reynolds myself and Im told that the mechanic should be replacing all my spokes and that the wheel should be tensioned back to spec. I immediately, call Toga to relay to them what Reynolds had told me but they counter my request by saying, the material that the spoke nipples are made out of is too soft and the whole wheel needs to be rebuilt. I decided to call Reynolds on the spot and get some answers and they confirm my suspicions and reassure me that the nipples on my wheel are the same used on on all their wheels and that I should just send my wheel back to the manufacture to insure that the job is done right. It became very clear to me that this head mechanic either has no idea what hes talking about or was just trying to milk extra money out of me. To top it off, he never marked the problematic spokes so now I have absolutely no idea which were bad. Now I have to ride the wheel until another problem arises to properly diagnose the problem. The highlight of my visit was when I was heading out the door and a sale associate, Ed, said to me, You go get after that company! This infuriated me beyond belief but at the end of they day theyre the ones that lost my business.Note to other – Always deal with the manufacturer on an expensive product or do the research and find yourself a GOOD shop where you can talk to the mechanic directly and not have to deal with sales associates.
I would NOT recommend using Toga services. Its a rip-off establishment !!! Prices are to high, Quality of service provided by its Mechanics is poor and management are unfriendly and disengaged with customers. If you need bike service, go to guys on 72nd st. Between Broadway and West End .
Nice low key place with a very good selection. Hard to believe how they get so many bikes and accessories into the or moderately sized store. Bikes for kids, for racers, for mountaineers, for commuters and a very good selection from within each category. Clothing, tires, tubes, electronics, whatever you need. Definitely worth a stop.
The staff are great fast service but the reason for 2 stars is because I being cycling for long time now and when I get a flat and Im not carrying a spare I go to any bike shop that is the nearest and service the bike but toga bike shop charge me a steep 26 dollars just to fix a flat tire thats crazy even after the pandemic or before I never paid no more than 12- 15 dollars and Ill add a tip make it 20 .peace ✌
Only one experience there. I asked if they had any extra sweat pads for the POC road helmets, since mine is destroyed from use. The person helping me told me no, and I should buy a new helmet 😐. I know not to pay $300 to replace a piece of fabric on a perfectly good helmet, of course, but I wonder what similar things they pull on less savvy people. Cant shop at or recommend shops that try and take advantage of people.
I generally dont write bad reviews, or exorbitantly long bad reviews as this one is. But this is an exception in my case.***I have been a Toga customer for years now, and I tip the mechanics and everything, so this baffles me even more. These guys can build wheels fine and will sell great bikes. Recently, I did business with them above the run-of-the-mill bike tune-up and check-up. I was very disappointed.***I bought the powertap through them and had them build a wheel around it. The wheel build itself was great, (although the tire assembly was a disaster, more on that later) however, at least three separate toga bike people: the salesman, the powertap expert, and the wheel builder, all missed the fact that the power tap box also had other things inside that I might want. Like the powertap computer, the wrench to replace battery, the manual, etc.***They gave me the wheel, but nothing else. They told me it was a hub only sale. I showed them (as we had done during selecting the unit at time of purchase with me and the toga salesman at the same computer) that the sale was actually a hub system (not hub only) and the price I was charged and is on my statement reflects this. The hub system for my model is 999, and the hub only is 849, I was charged 999. This is in black and white on the powertap saris website, and it was inexplicable how they could claim it was a hub only when the price clearly reflected a hub system.***Fine, I was told that the middle-man distributor between them and saris messed up and that they would order the rest of the package for me. (It didnt seem to sink in to the toga salesman that, according to this excuse, what it comes out to is that toga just got ripped off $150 by their distributor, but anyway...)***In the meantime, I took the wheel out for a spin that same day and pinch flatted. Ive never pinch flatted with that tire. I took the tire off and noticed the tube was in a z-shape in one place, where the pinch flat happened. This is consistent with someone trying to jam the tube in and not checking for pinches against the bead. I do not make a living from being a bike mechanic, and yet I know how important it is to avoid pinch flats. This incompetence really staggered me.***Anyway, the salesman told me he would call me back on monday about the rest of the package. He didnt. I called him back on tuesday, and he tried to tell me again that it was a hub only. I again had to explain, for a second time, that I was charged for the hub system not the hub only. Finally he said they will overnight the rest of the package, and it should arrive thursday the latest, and Id get a call. Thursday comes around and I have still not received any call. I called on friday myself and they said package is not there, but theyd call me when it gets there.***Monday, no call, Tuesday no call. Finally, I call them, oh yes, of course, the package is here you can pick it up! At this point I was really, really dejected. I felt like nobody at toga really cared about my situation, and that I had to push everything. What is the point of ordering something overnight, if I get it only a week later? Again, I think this bears repeating, that this is really poor customer service. At this point I had ver low expectations already.***So after a month long ordeal, I have learned that they dont care to return their calls when they say they do, they dont care to receive the packages when they say they will, they dont care if they are being ripped off, nor do they care if possibly the customer is being ripped off by them, and their overall demeanor is whatever. This is unacceptable, and Im obviously taking my business elsewhere. I wish to pretend it was an isolated incedent, but between the three people who went through my sales process and build process, to the pinch flat, to the mis-interaction with my person, Im not sure if now I even trust them enough to hose my bike down with water for fear that theyd mess that up also.
TOGA BIKES, their favorite customers are: rich people who do not know alot about bikes. Of the dozen times I visited that shop I have had painful, humiliating (yes, humiliating) and disrespectful experiences. The staff and mechanics there are rude, pompous and blatantly only concern themselves with the affluent caucasian ( I have observed this with my own eyes, while browsing and also waiting for my bike). Believe it or not, this shop discriminates and gives preference to the customers skin color ( though the staff themselves are people of color!) and they estimate or size–up to see how much the customer looks to spend. They judge you based on you skin color, the price of your bike, your age, your clothing — all for one end: profit, they only care about profit. I vowed to never even return to fill my bike with air over there!;Do yourself a favor by avoiding this disgusting shop!
Walked into store with some time on my hands to get some advice on a road bike that I wanted to purchase. Was warmly greeted as soon as I entered store, but then left to wondering for 20 min some young lady entered after me and she got all the attention. Touch a few things just to see if someone would say something they paid me no mind. Well Ill take my money elsewhere.
Ordered a bike over the phone was told it would be a few days and they would get it in, gave them time after 9 days of waiting I called and was told over the phone it will most likely be in if not that day then the following work day (today) just got off the phone and was told after 11 days of waiting the bike is out of stock and has no eta of when it will be in stock. Not a single apology, not even a care only excuse oh the owner is on vacation, last I checked I didnt place the order with the owner and to top everything off I requested a refund and they tell me I have to come in so now I have to travel from deep in Brooklyn to this horrible store just for a waste of time.
TOGA IS COMPLETELY UNSAFE. DO NOT GO HERE FOR ANY SERVICE!!!!! THEY WANTED ME TO RIDE ON A CRACKED FRONT FORK BECAUSE THEY CANT TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SCRATCH AND A CRACK.I was in a bicycle crash. I went in to get an insurance quote to repair my bike before having them repair it. They refused to look at the bike close enough to determine what was actually damaged (the huge dent in the top tube, the crack in the fork, the irreparable front wheel). I know someone who had a front fork failure while they were riding -- they lost all of their front teeth.I had thought someone who said, I have insurance that is going to pay for whatever is needed to fix this, and they also offered to pay for an inspection would get a reasonable estimate that would cover everything. Instead he argued with me about what was damaged. He was honestly worse than an insurance claims adjuster.Aside from their unsafe and unhelpful tendencies, the staff is incompetent. You can take my word for it but if you want details, continue reading. The staff tried to tell me that every year this years Dura-Ace is moved down the line and a new line replaces it. First of all, Dura-Ace isnt even re-vamped every year (the most recent iterations, ignoring electronic shifting, were released in 2003, 2008, and 2012) . The line below it, Ultegra, was revamped in off years from Dura Ace. If Dura Ace was moved down it would have to be done in the SAME year -- instead of overlapping. Aside from that there are of course real technical differences.First, the weight. The Dura Ace 7800 is close to a quarter pound lighter (I know it sounds stupid but road cyclists can be weight weenies) than the so-called-replacement, Ultegra 6600. But if that werent enough, there are a plethora of other differences. For example, the 7800 Dua-Ace rear derailleur has ball bearing pulleys while replacement Ultegra bushings. The Dura-Ace brakes use two sets of ball bearings pivots while the Ultegra uses one set of bearings and one set of bushings. Clearly not a make or break differences but they are illustrative of the differences and TOGAs incompetence. In the end I walked out and went to a shop that cares whether I lose all my teeth, and you should too.
3rd experience buying a bike at toga bikes (1st bike stump jumper fsr, 2nd bike-wifes cannondale c3, 3rd would be my brothers specialized allez.), customer service is top notch. Hobie helped us through the purchase. He did not rush us at all, explained everything and helped my brother out finding a bike that suits his needs and in his budget at the same time. Thank you toga bikes for being the great bike shop that you are!

2022-06-10I recently bought my 7 year old daughter a bike here. Good selection and she loves her bike. Staff are super friendly and helpful. I also ended up getting a bike as well. Love it and love the service and gregariousness of the staff. Lifetime free maintenance is awesome. Couple snafus with some of the accoutrements but they were totally cool about rectifying. Would highly recommend this place.

2022-06-01I was referred here by a friend. Brought my damaged bike in to inquire about repairs/ replacing the frame. I was told it wouldn’t be worth it to replace the frame and would be more cost effective to purchase a new bike. Fine- I had assumed so and was ok with that option. They only had one bike that was comparable in price to my current bike, but it was a completely different brand. Before I had any time to do research or ask questions, the employee was rushing to complete my order. I said that I wanted to try out the bike first before committing to it and was told that I could not do that because they would be rebuilding the bike for me using some of my components. I explained that I really was not comfortable not being able to take the bike around the block before purchasing it, and the employee grew very irritated with me. He told me it was “basically the same thing” as my bike and I should just buy it. I explained that I tried a variety of similar bikes before deciding on my current bike and he seemed very exasperated that I didn’t just jump on it immediately. He told me if I walk out without purchasing it someone else is going to grab it, and I said I’ll take my chances and left. I won’t ever return to Toga nor would I ever recommend the shop to anyone.

2022-05-28Extremely friendly and knowledgeable, but service is expensive if the bike was not bought there. $200 for deluxe tune up, and still the rear derailleur was not well tuned after 3 trips, had to bring it somewhere else. Everything else in the service was good (and better than other shops in the area).

2022-04-24I stopped by to get some air before a ride and the valve in my inner tube went mid-fill. Asked Lewis for help who expertly changed it out (I didn’t even know that was possible) and sent me on my way free of charge. Real quality gesture.

2022-01-15Great location. Parking lot right next door. I was looking for a bike rental that would have something for my 3 yr old son, and they had the perfect bike trailer. Overall, very easy process. They hold onto your ID and you pay once you return the bike. I paid $22 for 2hours and got a 7speed cruiser with the child trailer!

2018-08-09I blew out a tire on my Citizen Miami folding bike a few blocks away from this place. Went in. Asked for a quote. Got it. They fixed it up. Gave me a swanky Michelin tire. While I was waiting I saw them helping other customers very courteously. The price for the tire, inner tube, and labor were normal for the city.

2021-09-21Bought a bike online to pick up in store. The bike was available as in stock on the site when I bought it. Next day, they called to say that the bike is not in stock and wanted to up-sell me to the next higher model. I get bike inventory is tight but manage your site inventory better.

2021-09-07Beware! My husband went have a flat tire fixed on his e-bike and was given the wrong inner tube! Because of it his tire was flat again in 2 days! Has to have it service again somewhere else. Didn’t even have the decency to offer a refund on shotty work they provided only a store credit?! Who would go back. Was a 1st and last experience with them. Find somewhere else to go.

2021-08-27Togas repair service is overpriced, underperforming, and extremely frustrating. 3 months ago, I had the shifter on my bike replaced and a general tune up. Toga charged me an outrageous $240 for this work. When I returned earlier today with a problem with the new shifter, they claimed my gear shifting issue was something different and bilked me for another $20. To add insult to injury, every trip to Toga takes 1-2 hours. They want you to wait while they work. Then you need to repeatedly test the bike because their semi-competent mechanic cannot seem to do the job right. I will never return.
