We were a party of 7 including couple of kids for lunch on Saturday. We had reservation but we were told to wait until rest of our party arrived(this was fine). We ordered appetizers; shishito peppers, duck (grilled?), and shrimp katsu. It was okay. I didn’t try the duck since it did not look like it was grilled. Didn’t look appetizing. For main menu we had; Tempura Udon, tsurutontan delux, Omakze(restaurant week special menu), and Uni Creme udon. The Uni was the worst. Smelled like toilet. Other food was okay. Nothing exceptional, but not bad.Overall ambiance is nice, pretty cool and can be romanic even..I don’t think I would go back since there wasn’t any food that want me to go back to eat.
This place has easily become one of my favorite places to eat lunch at in Manhattan. The sushi is always so fresh and delicious, and on top of that, the udon is so hot and savory. The sushi pairs really well with the udon. On top of that, the interior of the establishment is incredibly friendly and casual, and I always get such an amazing vibe and ambiance from here. You also cant beat these prices in Manhattan, the dishes are very affordable.
Not gonna lie, Food was great. I just dont like the servers attitude and their services. I asked to turn down ac, they cant, which I understand. But then I ask to switch seat, they gave us dirty look. Didnt even say thank you after dropping the check on the table. Completely ignored us when we leave the restaurant. 🤷♂️
I must preface by saying i am an udon fiend (you can check out some of my other udon reviews). for udon i primarily look at: 1) noodle texture, mouthfeel, presence in the dish, and 2) quality and balance in flavor of the broth.tsurutontan has a very wide menu covering many types of udon dishes/bowls (maybe too many?) that are slightly experimental. i applaud them for the creativity and trying to use udon as a medium to be used in a greater context for the culinary experience.that said, i have tried two dishes from here. the one pictured is the uni crème udon. i have also tried their tan tan udon. both times, their udon noodles just didn’t have the right texture. the noodles were very soft and a bit mushy (no bounce, and lacking the slippery mouthfeel). the tan tan broth was pretty decent, but the uni creme broth was a bit lacking. the uni was fresh but the broth was a bit simple (almost like a cream of chicken with tobiko caviar sprinkled about) and came out lukewarm. again, i love the creativity but the flavors weren’t really working together for me to create a delicious eating experience.for those who care for environment, the restaurant has classy decor and a fantastic ambiance.
I’ve been to this restaurant twice and each time has been great. We came in for lunch, and we were seated right away. I really liked the ramen/sushi entrees; get a little bit of both 😉. The chicken karage was soooo good; fresh and perfectly crispy (I didn’t get a photo because we were so hungry lol).
The flavor of udon is not as amazing as the huge bowl… I really like the presentation of food, but to be honest the noodle and soup is not the creamy type that I expect. I would hope it’s more savory or creamy. But would like to try some other udon next time. We ordered the shishito but the kitchen is too busy to prepare it until the very end, and they just took this on them and didn’t charge us. 5 star for the service and vibe!
Overall the food was not bad. Except fried chicken was too salty. By the time we finished the fried chicken appetizer my mouth was so salted I could barely use soy sauce on my sushi. And it came with udon on the side. The udon was mad salty couldnt eat it even tho I was trying to not waste food. Sounds like a lot of complaints but they probably still deserve a 4 star. But where I was seated it brings it down to 3. I was placed by the toilets when there were plenty of seats available at this place. And there were small flies flying around by restroom.
Went here for lunch on a weekday and the lunch special is such a good deal! $24 for a HUGE bowl of udon + sashimi.- Sashimi (4/5): The cuts were thinner than what was pictured, but the fish was super fresh! Would try out the tri-color next time though- Sukiyaki Beef Udon (5/5): Very tasty & huge portions!
Gourmet udon noodles with good portions and excellent flavor. Happy hour prices also made the meal prices more manageable (happy hour is all day Sunday to Thursday and limited hours Friday and Saturday). But you get what you pay for. Just a unique experience with flavorful udon and broth. The broth wasn’t salty and was light flavorful and among the best broths I’ve had
The service was excellent and the food got to me really quickly. The noodles were great and the broth was very flavorful. I had gotten the American wagyu udon and the wagyu was superb. The price for a bowl of udon is around $20 and it is a great place to go out with your friends if you want some lunch or dinner.
Came with 5 adults, 1 toddler, 1 baby. They were accommodating to the kid’s needs and placed us at an appropriate table. The creamy udons were too rich for me. They have a variety of set options so you can try more than just the udon, rice set with mini udon on the side or sushi set with mini udon on the side.
I was pleasantly surprised. Didn’t expect much from such a huge, commercial feeling space but the udon hits the spot - nothing that will blow you away, but really really good. I came for the lunch special, and I gotta say, their lunch deal is insane. $12 for a full size sukiyaki and one of their small sides. Other combos can be more expensive.
My spicy tan tan is pretty on point, wish it came with a little more noodles though. My partner ordered the combo w small udon bowl, his broth was really sweet. Our seating was right by the bathroom and tables are really close to one another. I prefer the 46th st location tbh.
Ordered the value omakase with spicy tonton. The udon was a highlight—broth was very flavorful and udon texture nice and chewy. The sushi, on the other hand, was very average. Some of the sashimi pieces were fresh, but the rice was bland and dry. Would recommend sticking to the udon.
Ive been here many items, but never have I experienced such disrespect, rude and untrained staffs tonight. We got in and started ordering about 730pm but waited for awhile before a waiter attended to us to put in our order. However, we waited for another hour asking a waiter/waitress why is it taking so long for our food to be served. Apparently, the staffs all do not know what is going on and the kitchen doesnt know how to prioritize their orders. If I didnt speak up, I wouldnt even think I will be getting my food before they close. The waiter didnt even apologize for taking so long and thinks that was okay. We ordered 2 cans of coke cola and yet we got yelled at by one of the female manager saying that they do not allow cans to be served, etc. It wasnt even our fault and yet my friend and I got blamed for their untrained staffs who was the one who served us. Over the years, their quality of customer service and their food has gotten worst every time I do come here to eat. After we called for our bill on a split bill between my friend and I, beware that the suggested gratuity is for the original total amount and not the split %.
Come for the restaurant week. They do not have uni so I order the basic set. Nice sushi and udon soup. The regret is the udon itself. The inside part taste like flour. Besides, the waiting time is beyond my expectation. Both for waiting to be seated and waiting for the food.
Im giving this place a solid 4 stars. The only reason Im leaving out the 5th is strictly based on the atmosphere of the restaurant itself.Tsurutontan is great for a night out with some friends, a first date, and an anniversary dinner. I would have to say it isnt the best place to bring kids or younger children. Its more romantic than anything else. Id describe the aesthetic as minimalistic, contemporary and abstract. With that said, its very easy on social media and popular with people ages 20-40.It has a beautiful bar, I personally do not drink so I have nothing to say about the alcohol.I love the noodles, its free of charge to double the size of your bowl. You get a little bit more soup and noodles with the option. The curry options are thick and flavorful, while their soy sauce/dashi options are more refreshing and sweet.I highly recommend this place for dates, the presentation of all their food is beautiful and perfect for that social media story snap. The portions for the noodles are definitely enough for the night. Some might say its too big. The noodles are hand made and have a nice chewy texture. The price point is a little high for a bowl of noodles, but its well worth it.
My first time eating here. Went with a friend. The food was absolutely phenomenal. It left a very good first impression. Ive already recommended it to close friends that visit from around the country. The only thing that topped the food was the immaculate service. I cant wait to go back.Oh also, for anyone who does not have an issue with red meat, I recommend the Wagyu sushi. The flavor is amazing and melts in your mouth.
I love the vibes inside, music, service, and overall atmosphere of the restaurant. But I cant believe Im saying this but maybe the portions are too big? Like who on earth can finish that entire bowl of udon? Its like 3 whole meals lol. But other than that the flavours were good. I got the deluxe wagyu sukiyaki and I liked the broth but was a bit disappointed that the meat was a bit too chewy and not soft/melt in your mouth. The noodles were also not chewy to my liking and closer to the mushy side. Still a very cool restaurant tho and maybe Id try the other dishes next time, but definitely gonna share with someone instead
It pains me to leave a two-star review. I would frequent Tsuru often before the pandemic, and have been a few times last year. I recently went and I sadly have to say that it is going down hill. Firstly, the Sanitary score is downgraded to a “B” grade (which I didn’t notice until after we ate). They try to hide it in the bottom right corner of their front window, behind a sticker.I sat at the bar area and there were so many flies, that I had to be reseated. As you all know, these are flies that accumulate due to a bar that has not been cleaned properly, or at all.Our server kept touching and running her hands through her hair, and then would handle our food orders. Gross. We also saw the chefs walk in and they were wearing flip flops. I don’t know. The place just felt like it is degrading into a dive bar.The food was weak. The rice in our sushi was not the same. It tasted a bit dry and used to be much fresher and softer. The fish on some pieces was okay but on others tasted like supermarket fish. The noodles were overly soft.Overall, I am sad that Tsuru has lost its touch and been a victim to the pandemic. I suggest they lower their prices to reflect the degraded experience, otherwise it’s just overpriced and not worth it. Sad!
The staff was good, and sushi and tempura were great. But udon noodles were terrible. The noodles were too soft as they were boiled to much. The staff told that the flour company from where they bought noodles had closed because of the COVID and they changed noodles. I never go again as long as they use the noodle.
I guess we were expecting a bit more and the place just didn’t deliver - so the 2 stars. Ambiance? It’s trying hard to be almost pumping night club, but also a restaurant. The service was spotty and inattentive. The food was fine and plenty, with good presentation, but was neither extraordinary or bad - just middle of the road sushi and udon. SoMany great restaurants in the city and I am there isn’t enough going on with this one to come back. Needs to up its game and offer lore than good prices
Been going to this place since it opened and have been to both locations. Always a great experience. The staff is nice and the food is delicious, though I might be biased since udon is my favorite type of noodle. I appreciate that they have Uni because its also a favorite of mine thats really hard to come by even though sometimes its not the freshest but ill eat it anyway because Im gross. Checks all the boxes for me though. I love it here.
Came here during their 50% off special 2 weeks ago with my friends. We made a reservation a few days beforehand using Resy which was no problem at all. When we arrived, we were seated inside the booth seat. The waitress who served us, told us that due to Covid regulations, sharing food would not be allowed, so they did not give us separate plates. We ordered a medley of appetizers for each of us, from Wagyu sushi to shrimp dumplings. My favorite was definitely the cucumber salad, even though we got full at one point the cucumber did refresh us.We each ordered an udon dish, and did not expect them to be huge. They were bigger than our faces. As mentioned by my friends, the udon was delicious and the curry was really flavorful. I loved my Wagyu sukiyaki udon, as the broth was sweet and light; it really mixed well with the onion and the poached egg. The udon had soaked up the broth and adding the fried chicken from the appetizer, my appetite was satisfied. Came out of the restaurant full, and our bill was a fraction of the price ($100), as it would be if we ordered original price. We did order drinks which were the original price, but unfortunately they did not have the drink I wanted that had matcha. Instead I got a their version of a Moscow mule, which was refreshing .As far as I know, the 50% special is still going, but I do recommend making a reservation.
I first had Tsurutontan udon through UberEats and it just so good that I decided to go dine-in. Coincidentally, when my friend and I went for dine-in they were doing a promo of 50% off all appetizers and entrees for dine-in only (promo ends Nov 30, 2020). The texture of the udon definitely something you can’t get any where else in NYC, but I feel like its comparable to the udon you can get at the Mitsuwa Edgewater food court. The ingredients used tastes of high quality. Regular menu pricing definitely towards $$$, I’d say one can pay about $40-50/ there if they order an udon and a drink or appetizer including tax & gratuity. The restaurant square footage is pretty decent and spacious, too.
I had the crab truffle udon noodle soup. Broth was rich and creamy, and the udon was soft and tender, but still had some chew. I recommend the cucumber and shishido pepper starters. Only 4 stars because I was dining with a friend who had food allergies which we explicitly stated at the beginning and they proceed to serve us those very ingredients. Otherwise, I would highly recommend the food as an alternative to get out of your normal ramen routine.
I was very excited to come here again finally after a whole year of COVID. I came here with my family. I always had great experiences here before. The service was great. The night started off great even though it was more crowded than I expected. The appetizers were incredible, then it came to a horrifying stop. I had to stop eating after I found a baby cockroach laying in one of the udon soup we ordered. We were really upset plus I had kids with me too. I wouldn’t want them eating anything with bugs inside. Immediately we stopped eating and quietly I got the server as I explained what happen and we asked for the manager. The server apologized and went to get the manager. The manager came over as I showed him again. But he just surprised and said “oh” and took the noodle bowl away. I wasn’t try to make it a big scene. But as a manager, you should at least apologize to us as what just happened. It’s the most basic thing to do as a management. Even though they took the noodle bowl off the bill. But we were still upset with the meal. Unfortunately we will never be going back. I was only going to give 1 star. I am giving an extra star only because of the host. server and runner. Too bad, I forgot to take a picture of the noodle bowl which had the baby cockroach inside. Because I was so upset about it. When we left, the manager only starring at us not even trying to say anything to apologize. I don’t understand how he got promoted.
Meh. Noodles were definitely over cooked (they would be phenomenal if they weren’t). Broths lack depth (curry broth tasted flat and sukiyaki was overpowering sweet because of sugar and mirin). The wagyu beef in both broths tasted like hotpot beef. Service was wonderful, though. Atmosphere was nice enough but surprisingly loud.
I’ve frequented this place a few times since I’m quite a fan of their udon noodles, but it feels as if the taste as been becoming less and less intriguing after each experience. I cannot say for sure whether it is due to my having had this multiple times already, but my most recent visit definitely left me feeling as if the first few times were much better. However, despite so, I would still recommend the place as it is one of the better tasting places that I have been to in NYC!
I love this place! There are two locations but I always visit the union square location. It’s a large venue so groups are welcome but reservations always help during busy times.Food: the noodle selection is incredible along with the broth base. They even have uni ramen for fans of uni.I open opt for happy hour lunch or the evening (9pm+) happy hour for dinner and drinks. I love the spicy tuna cones and their sushi is good quality.Deco: creative walls - jeans, letters, coconuts.
It’s the second time I go to that beautiful place. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and the atmosphere really chic. The staff is very welcoming and helpful when it comes to help us choose the best of the best. The food is really good and comes in very generous portions. The music is very cool also. A few step away from Times Square. I highly recommend this place for any amateur of good cuisine. Prices are really decent for that quality.I’ll go back for sure !
Went there for their covid sale and ended up extremely satisfied. A few important points if you are going to dine there - there is a time limit dependent on the number in your party. My party of 2 only had 45 mins to eat, starting from the time we sat down. Not too ideal as my friend and I ended up having to scarf our food down towards the end. Outdoor seating is horrendous so we had to sit inside. Overall food was good but too many un-ideal restrictions.
Came here on a busy Saturday and this place was completely packed. Wait was over an hour so my group and I decided to get drinks else where prior to sitting down. We ordered the curry deluxe 24, beef udon, small order of uni and salmon roe, and also the spicy tuna rolls. Wow these bowls are massive and packed with so much broth and udon. The Japanese curry was mild and rich in flavor. You want to eat the katsu and tempura rather quickly as they do get soggy. The beef in the udon comes out a little rare and youll want to dip it in the broth a lil longer for it to cook. The small sized uni and salmon roe was perfect with our dish. I was really please with the service here. We felt like we had 3 servers at all times. The restaurant has a cool dark ambient feel to it. Extra comfy leather chairs and plenty of sitting for large parties. I really enjoyed my experience here. Flavors were on point and the massive bowls blew me a way. Highly recommend this to anyone that loves udon and authentic Japanese cuisine.
Though they took 10 dollars off our bill, I feel the need to say something. Me and my friend were given rotten uni during our omakase dinner. The smell and taste was so foul we had to spit it out and rinse with listerine. The taste still lingered in our mouths. When we spoke with the waitress she said that the uni is from Mexico so it’s a bit more fishy. I let her know that it wasn’t a fishy smell it smelled of fecal matter. She said when she asked earlier we said everything was fine, yes that was before we saved our uni nigiri for last…Please beware:Udon was good tho.
I love it, there was not better place to celebrate my birthday the udon noodles were amazing the truffle one the whole party favorite, the decor is instagramable, as well as the drinks and the appetizzers... you may forget to snap a picture if you try these first because they are really delicious, all of the above mentioned we had the cones which come in a cute box full of rice (picture worthy but then you get entangle with the smell and you have to try this little devils, before you know you had them all) the Tokyo mule and the lycheetiny... i will be waiting impatient for one to open in Chicago.
Excellent! My family loves Tsurutontan! The Udon is to die for! We have tried multiple broths and all wonderful, whether you like spicy or mild... 😋👍If you have not yet tried it, do your taste buds a favor and go. And the appetizers are also amazing. My personal favorites... Fried eggplant and spicy tuna tartar cones.. My mouth is watering just thinking about it... 🤗🤣
I used to visit here a lot - back then its a solid 4 star. However things have changed in 2022, the quality of food has significantly dropped. Avoid all types of sushi and sashimi. Also the waiters are quite unprofessional and some of them are even rude. I would no longer recommend this place.
I came here with my sister and she introduced me to this place. I had the pork belly tan tan udon and it was pretty good!! It had lots of flavor. I do with it had more pork belly, it only had 2 pieces of pork belly :( but it was pretty good regardless! We also arrived during happy hour so we ordered the spicy salmon rolls and they were just amazing!! 💕 the salmon was very fresh and soo tasty! Definitely recommend! And its so nice during happy hour because they dim the lights and could be pretty romantic haha!
Our friend recommended this place we made a reservation and we were seated promptly. Our server was friendly. We ordered some appetizers. Wow the creamy shrimp and the tuna in the cones were delicious. Amazing!!!I ordered the curry deluxe. It was ok. I’m a huge fan of curry and I was expecting more kick in my curry. The reason I give the. 3 stars is because I can’t give the 2 1/2.The food I ordered was ok. But my friend orders the sea food plate(she only eats fish and the vegetarian sea food options are limited) which has oysters, shrimps, clams, and scallops. When it arrived it was a tofu and cabbage plate. We checked with the spoon for any type of sea food with no luck. We let the server know we got the wrong plate. He came back with the exact same plate saying he saw some clams I the bottom. 5 tiny clams that we are almost 99.99% sure they added In The kitchen when the server took the plate. After we were done eating we told the server that the plate didn’t have any shrimp or any of the other sea food elements but he kept making excuses. At the end the plate was removed form the check but it was a bit of a disappointment.I would go back for the appetizers tho!
Loved it! I love the decor and the atmosphere. The place is big with several floors but it still gets crowded. I recommend making a reservation. The spicy tuna cones were tasty but rather small. Excellent snow crab roll. The Udon entrees are rather big, and you can have extra noodles for the same price. Ill definitely go back!
Do you like Udon noodles? Do you also love ramen? Then, this is the restaurant you would want to go. They have a variety of Udon noodle bowls as well as an assortment of appetizers: calamari, dumplings. A large portion of Udon noodles is available at no extra charge. Personally, I think it is very filling for one large bowl so next time I would share it. Furthermore, they also serve Cold Udon noodles if you prefer. This is a lightly dimmed casual place great for getting a friendly lunch or dinner.
Delicious Udon and other Japanese dishes. First time there and tried the tofu, fried chicken, nabeyaki udon and sizzling sukiyaki Udon. Sizzling sukiyaki Udon does not come with broth, but it tasted really good. Choose large portion and thick noodle and really liked them. Look forward to returning to try other dishes. Service was excellent. Been back multiple times and the food and service have been consistently above expectation. Must visit.
I visited on Sunday evening for dinner around 6pm. We put down our name and waited until all the other people arrived. The restaurant became full quite fast while we were waiting..They gave us a bar seat for 3 of us, but the arrangement was a bit strange since the third person had to seat on the other side of the bar at the corner..My sizzling sukiyaki udon was good. It was good combination of sweet and salty, meat and egg. However it didnt really sizzle when it come out and got cold by the time I finished it.
I was very excited to come here finally and my boyfriend took me as a celebratory dinner. The service was extremely hospitable, we even were able to change our seats after asking the host. The night started off great and than came to a horrifying stop. After enjoying drinks, and the food being incredible, I had to stop eating after a baby cockroach started to crawl up my arm as I was almost done with my udon soup. Immediately we stopped eating and quietly I got the host as I explained what happen and we just wanted to get the check and leave. The supervisor came over as I explained again and I knew it was a baby roach due to the fact that my boyfriend and I have worked in the food industry for 8+ years and when there is a roach, there are eggs of them somewhere throughout the restaurant. She apologized and we kindly left after paying our bill without making a scene. Unfortunately we will never be going back.
We had a reservation. We had spicy tuna cone and Creamy Spicy Shrimp Tempura (appetizer) delicious! My biggest disappointment was my main dish, I ordered the Spicy Seafood Jjigae Udon and got a different dish. Spoke with my waitrer and let him know I was not happy with the mistake, he took it to the kitchen and 3 to 4 minutes later he came back and said I saw some clams at the bottom, told him my dish does not come with tofu but he just came out with an excuse, at this point I was already upset, I told the waitress that according to the menu my dish did not include tofu and that I found 5 tiny clams which I knew it was added after I complained. He took it out the check, but I ended up with an empty stomach. There is not enough vegetarian or pescatarian options. Overall, restaurant was fine.
Came here for lunch on a cold afternoon. The shrimp tempura was perfect - juicy in the inside, light crunchy salty batter and the spicy sauce was a great accompaniment. The shishitos were plump and lemony, sometimes a little smoky. The Udon bowl was huge! The broth a little more fishy than I usually like, but flavorful. Our server was delightful and he was very busy.I minused a star because there was a hair in our tempura, but otherwise I would recommend for lunch, they have really good deals.
Great ramen udon modern joint in a large scale! I think the starement covers everything. I didnt appreciate the restaurant at the first visit. I start to appreciate the ramen and other rice dishes. It is one of my fav noodle places in the city. Price is on the high side, but it is offset by the size they offer. It is almost comical.
Overall, decent experience. Service was pretty good once we got seated as our server was attentive and cheerful. Got the cha siu udon soup bowl and my wife got the truffle cream udon. Both were pretty tasty, albeit, I think the price of 24 before any add ons was a little much. Tempura could be better, but wasnt the worst Ive ever had.
We arrived without reservations at 12:30 pm on a weekday and were seated immediately. Had the sushi roll and sashimi tempura lunch specials. Each set had generous portions of food and the mini udon was very filling. Great price for the amount and quality of food. The udon with hot dashi base was light and tasty, while the spicy pork soup was a little heavy. Udon noodles were chewy and good. Service was good. Definitely follow up with the waiter/waitress if your food hasnt arrived in a timely manner. Our waiter quickly tracked down our desserts. The udon broth didnt trigger any thirst or headaches (usually get those from MSG) - great! Would recommend to others.
Ive had only one experience here so far but Im already swept away. We had a party of six and the service was amazing despite our larger group size. They made sure we had clean utensil in between dishes and were very entertaining and accommodating. The food was of course very good and sushi was surprisingly great despite them being known for their noodle dishes. I would definitely recommend and will be looking to come back!
Our first visit, on a Saturday night. We tried a bunch of appetizers and sushi rolls at the bar. Staff are friendly and service is fast. Food is delicious and fresh. We had Sea and Truffle Roll, Tuna Tartar in cones, Fried Eggplant and Shishito Pepers. They all went nicely with Sake. Nice atmosphere! Will definitely come back for the noodles.
An okay dining experience. The spicy tuna in a crunchy roll and fried corn was good. But the uni udon had barely any uni and ingredients inside. The sashimi salad udon was also underwhelming, I heard the times Square location has better food so Ill try that location once more. If the food doesnt deliver quality again, I dont think I would return to TsuruTonTan
The restaurant was atmospheric with dim lighting. The table is set up to replicate a traditional Japanese noodle shop with a pair of chopsticks on a tiny rock. Servers are attentive as if they see that you are just sitting there looking around they will come to you and offer information. I did have on server James who was super attentive that made recommendations and made sure we are comfortably settled in and answered all of our questions about the menu. Portions were huge . They have the option of paying the same price for the udon choice with a free upgrade _ getting an additional portion . I dont know how anyone can eat the regular portion let alone the upgrade. But they did allow you to pack to go so the choice is up to you. Food was delicious. I highly recommend the tuna taco !
Tsurutontan greets you with a cozy atmosphere. Dimmed lights and dark woods. Ceilings are tall in the main hall and the whole place gives off much warmth. Once seated, we were promptly attended to and eagerly awaited our orders. I ordered the Deluxe Curry (which comes in a thicker broth (curry) than the rest of the menu, as well as a chicken cutlet and shrimp tempura). I opted for the thick noodles and the larger size bowl. Interestingly enough, the normal and large sizes are the same price but just differ in the amount of broth/curry used. The orders are brought over in these huge bowls and covered with a wooden plate, which is removed by the server once served. We were given ladle spoons and a little holder which is great as we had chopsticks for the meat/ noodles however, you could eat everything with just the ladle. The chicken cutlet had a nice crisp to it. Chicken was well made. The shrimp tempura worked quite well here. Not an overpowering flavor but the shrimp was breaded and fit the dish well. The thick noodles and curry were phenomenal. I highly recommend the thick noodles, which are soft, and add to the eating experience. Together, a large Deluxe Curry filled me fully and then some. Amazing dish. Those who prefer more of a soup texture will enjoy the beef udon. The service was good and the food phenomenal. Highly recommend this!
This place is SO GOOD! I remember wanting to check it out before they opened this locations, and only went yesterday. A Monday, around 4:30pm. To dine in with a friend. Customer service is beyond expectations and they are being extremely careful with COVID. The food was absolutely amazing. Im sure I will go back soon!
Very tasty and the ingredients were so fresh. The broth from the tsurutontan deluxe udon was so refreshing and delicious. The soy garlic fried tatsuta chicken was not too spicy and just the right texture and easy to bite into and chew. Very tasty. I had the sizzling sukiyaki udon which was very tasty and full of flavor. One the ibwould change is to a thinner noodles because the thick noodles was too filling. The cost for large and regular was also the same so of course we chose the large. Delicious but expensive.
Tsurutontan Udon Noodle Brasserie21 E 16th St New York, NY 10003This place has a massive menu almost too many things to choose, We decided on a seasonal udon the Seafood Chigae Udon, with Shrimp, Scallops and clams. Sadly we didnt get the big bowl with this but I cant blame them because it needs to be in a stone clay pot to keep it cooking! The udon quickly absorbs the soup so eat it as you go! I thought it was the right about of spicyness and flavor, the seafood was nicely portioned. We got Fresh scallops and Soy garlic chicken, the scallops were fresh and creamy and nicely priced! The soy garlic chicken was nice and crispy and the sauce made it have a nice flavor that made you dip it back and wipe the plate clean! I think this place is a nice hit, not too pricey but definitely need to take another visit. I went during a sunday and there was a short wait for two, so plan ahead! As always check my photos and my IG Jliueats
Went in as a party of two around 5:30PM and luckily there was no check-in line. We ordered the Soy Garlic Fried tatsuna chicken, uni creme udon, and wagyu shabu udon in truffle dashi and they were all on point. Given the price ($20~$30), portion was decently large and in terms of depth of flavors, udon here was the closest to the ones that I had in Japan among udon places I visited in NYC. I especially liked the broth of wagyu shabu udon which had pleasantly intense aroma of truffle.
Beautiful restaurant eith excellent service. The creamy mushroom udon soup was very flavorful and a great vegetarian option. We loved everything we ordered except for a sushi roll - it did not have much flavor. The pork buns, cucumber salad, spicy tuna appetizer, and dumplings were all delicious. Highly recommend this place.
Wonderful dine in place..Its cozy yet comfortable. Expect to have a warm soothing environment. The food and service is great. For vegans theres not much of options. But meat lovers can dig right in. Take a look at the pictures. And have a wonderful dine in at this restaurant.
The udon here is so good and they now so reservations. Ordered the spicy tuna cones - delicious, the curry udon with thick noodles - delicious although not as chewy as Id like, and the uni udon with thin noodles - this dish is cold and the noodles are perfectly chewy.
A hidden gem in Manhattans Saint Marks Square. Easy to see right off of 16th Street. Parking on the street is available but it fills up fast especially on the weekends and at night. Daily food and drink specials. Great Bar and amazing cocktails. Assorted Beers and Sake. Sushi rolls are ok. The real stars are the Udon Dishes. Large or small, they are the same price. Thats great!! Clean facilities with a wheelchair accessible entrance. Unisex Restroom. We will definitely be going back..
I love ramens and here is the place. There are many options for ramen and also other dishes for sushi. The presentation of the dishes are definitely great and so is the taste. I think the price is reasonable. The big one is pretty big, imagine a bowl twice the size of your face. The amount of noodle is very generous as well. Restaurant light is dimmed, somewhat feeling romantic haha the food area is for whoever that’s eating. If you would like to stay in and continue to talk to your friends, then you would need to move to the bar counter area. At times it gets busy. You will area long line outside, reservation is recommended.
Great udon bowls! The portions here are huge, and you can order a larger order (more noodles) for I believe the same price as a normal order. That being said the bowls are a little bit on the pricey side but for the amount of food its worth it.We tried the salmon and ikura roll as well - this tasted pretty fresh, and was very tasty but it was pricey for sushi. If youre going to an udon place, I think you should get what they specialize in.Service was very good and decor was nice. Overall pretty good!
Wow, I love TsuruTonTan! Where do I even start??I love the modern decor of the restaurant. It made me think it might be an expensive place, it is not. I found the prices quite reasonable for what you actually get. They serve their noodles in these hilariously large bowls. I was worried that the place is only popular because it was a gimmicky thing to do, but my worries disspiated once I took my first bite...it was very delicious!I ordered the Nabeyaki Udon - it was jammed packed with accompaniments. Its got two shrimp tempuras, soft boiled egg, chicken, enoki mushroom, shiitake mushroom, napa cabbage, sea eel and a slice of scallop (?). All of this is simmered in a delicious, comforting broth. The udon noodles were nice and chewy, just the way I like it! It was perfect. Totally reasonable for $20 (lunch price)My friend ordered the cold mentai-kamatama udon. There is a huge portion of spicy fish caviar and youre supposed to mix the soft boiled egg with it along with the udon. The udon in the cold dish is even chewier (in the nice way!), and I love that this tasted light yet delicious. Although I have to say my friend was totally jealous of my dish!Oh, and this place gives extra noodles for free! How awesome is that?? We both got extra noodles and managed to finish everything. If you dont want to wait, there is a convenient app that lets you make reservations. I did not have to wait at all.
Food was ok but service was really below par. California roll was excellent. Liked the spicy seafood udon more. Waiter is cute but seems don’t know what’s going on there. We ordered California roll but served us cucumber roll? My friend asked for fat noodle but served regular one? They kindly decided to waive the charge initially but later my friend cannot finish and asked for take out, they asked for charge again. Honestly just don’t waste the food right? I feel manager was rude while the waiter was just inexperienced.
Its really a mix bag type of place. Its not bad but isnt great either. Ambience is nice but destroy by the club music in the background. My appetizer is the only thing thats good, the udon is decent but you would expect to be better at this place. I had a nabeyaki which is pretty standard menu but their dish look pale and lack the assortment of ingredients that it usually come with. I had a light cocktail, but it was so light that it taste like water. The staff are fine, nothing to complain about. Overall, not impress.
Who knew using could be served in a hip setting? This contemporaey restaurant is made up of many dining spaces spread on several floors. Very cool. The udon is perfectly prepared served in a clearest of broths in a large ceramic bowl. The fillings and toppings are also all nicely put together and complement each other. You can ask for extra udon at no extra cost. Definitely look forward to coming back to try out the other udon and donburi bowls!
5.18.18 - Each time I come back to this restaurant, I think its not as good as its hyped up to be. The soba noodles, thick and thin are good, but nothing special. The various combination of flavors is good, but not amazing and there isnt too much value for what youre spending. The extra serving of noodles seems silly since I feel like big portions seem to be the norm, although I dont recommend it because excess serving of food is overrated. Maybe the other main attraction is the all day happy-hour at the bar...I have to drop this down from a 3-star to a 2-star.10.27.17 - the soba is good and the Katsu Don was fine really well. The shrimp and crab tempura was okay. The service needs improvement as our server seemed out of itsAll in all, its worthy of a revisit.
I was fortunate to come here before 6pm one night and lucky me... no wait!Tsurutontan is an establishment that people are familiar with in Japan and they decided to open up their first shop in the USA by Union Square! This place is decently sized and I think there was a lot of hype in the first week as I heard there were crazy waits. There is good reason though, as I feel the food is great. The ambiance and feel of this place was delightful, coupled with the very nice and attentive servers here. She even was promoting how nice the menu looked (which yes, it did look very well done)! There were so many choices of appetizers and different types of udon (hot, cold, traditional, and unique styles), along with some rice bowls if you are actually not feeling udon (but you really SHOULD try the udon, as its KNOWN for it!). Anyways, after careful deliberation, I decided to go for what was apparently their most popular dish, the cold Uni Udon. When I ordered this, you have the option to get the large order, which to be honest, is still a very manageable size.Upon receiving my bowl, I have to say that this was one of the best bowls of udon I ever had in the United States. I felt there was just the right amount of sea urchin and flavor in it. What really won me over was a very simple ingredient, the sesame seeds, as it provided a nice mixture of taste. The udon noodles themselves were prepared very well with the right amount of texture. This definitely is illustrated by the fact that the udon is prepared in-house.Maybe I tried their best dish here?!? Who knows, I would have to come back here and try some other bowls of udon... but with how good the Uni Udon is... that will be hard to actually follow-through on that idea.
My friend brought me here and Im soon gonna bring some family here. The staff was attentive, the decor was gorgeous and the food was amazing. If this is your first time having udon, youll enjoy yourself with this new cuisine. If youve had udon before, youll love the amount of variety that the menu provides. Be prepared for $20 dishes but they were well worth the money.
Not a good place for vegetarians as they only have a non-soup stir fry option thats pretty basic. Pretty disappointing because our server mentioned that the owner has known that theres a need for well over a year and doesnt have any plyto make a change. Lots of clean seating, friendly staff but there can be a wait, so its best to make a reservation. However, I wont be returning as there are plenty of better vegetarian options at other ramen spots.
Busy and tasty just off Union Square. Reliably well-prepared Japanese dishes (mostly comfort food) in a nice space. Pretty reasonable prices. Reservations recommended.Update August 2020. Ate outside at the pandemic seating, food was tasty and service was pleasant but the staff was not wearing gloves and I felt like the precautions could be a little bit more seriously managed.Another visit October 2020:Still eating outside, enjoying the Sapporo draft for $3.99 and have the hearty oyakodon.
A great spot if youre craving udon. They have many options in flavors such as curry, creme, dashi broth, etc. You can upgrade to extra noodles for free if youre hungry (the standard size has a good amount of noodles already). They also a great number of appetizers to try and I recommend the soy garlic fried chicken. Also, definitely try to make a reservation and come before 7pm for dinner, which is when they start getting really packed.
Excellent happy hour, but its only served at the bar, with a separate menu. We ended up getting a table to try the udon noodles. The way the restaurant is set up my girlfriend and I ended up sitting next to each other, looking at another party through a room separator. We had the Waygu Truffle Udon, which was very heavy on the truffle. The second Udon dish was spicier but unmemorable. For dessert we had the water cake, which is very interesting. It consists of a gelatinous water bubble accompanied with malt powder, chocolate syrup and vanilla ice cream. Try it if you like udon.
This place was an experience! Made me feel like a little kid eating again. Haha the food was great. Im had the tan tan which I thought was a bit too peanut-y for my taste but Im sure there are those whod love it. The wagyu beef udon had one of the best broths Ive ever tasted and their curry is put of this world.
Best udon in the area! Had this noodle shop bookmarked forever and it didnt disappoint. The noodles are served in a MASSIVE bowl with plenty of toppings - I got the Tsurutontan Deluxe and it comes with lots of chicken, beef, shrimp & veggie tempura in an egg drop broth. You can choose between thin or thick noodles, and regular or large bowls. The regular size was plenty and we couldnt even finish that. Prices are a bit steep but the noodles are worth it!
I came here for lunch right at noon when it opened with one of my friends on a Thursday. Originally we were a party of 3 but one person was running late and we were hungry and didnt want to risk having to wait longer for a table so we just were seated in the lower level at the long table seating for 2. It was unfortunate that they were unable to accommodate for the guest that was running a bit late, but I guess that with the high volume of lunch rush they want to get people in and out.Sabrina was our server and she was extremely kind, knowledgeable and helpful! She really helped make our experience at Tsuru ton tan a great one. I ordered the tsurutontan deluxe which had a nice light but flavorful broth with egg, chicken, beef, and tempura in it. I fell in love with the udon and was probably the best one that Ive ever had! My friend who has a different taste palette ordered the sukiyaki udon which has a sweeter and more savory broth flavor which I found a bit too sweet for me, but my friend enjoyed his a lot. They have a selection of Lady M desserts to serve, but we were running low on time since we had to catch a bus later in the afternoon. I would recommend making a reservation when planning coming here to ensure that you get a seat! The price point is more expensive for udon/noodles, but I would say that its definitely worth the taste and flavor.
Ive come here three times in the last year to try to give a restaurant a fair shot. Unfortunately, each time was pretty disappointing. The food is very heavy and over salted. The soup is very thick and oily. What pushed me to not come back was the very last time I went, each glass, dish, and silverware had crusted food on it. The cup I received had the weirdest tasting water when we first sat down. After a cup of water, I and my lunch mate felt nauseous. I ended up throwing up outside before they served us. I had to go outside and throw up. Not a restaurant I would recommend for sanitary reasons.
Get large size for the same price as regular! udon noodles are very well cooked but the Sukiyaki is very salty. Wish there would be more beef in each bowl. The waiter was kind of in a rush of things so we felt a little hurried. Took our check away when we were still sitting at the table.
Come hungry! This place is so yummy, the ambiance is very nice, and all the seating is very comfy. The portions are also huge! I cant wait to come back. I ordered the vegetable tempura udon and it was amazing. I usually cant survive a meal without meat, but this was perfect for me and tasted delicious.
Last night we were walking back to our hotel from Broadway and stumbled upon Tsurutontan. We were blown away by our experience. From the moment we walked in we were treated so well. The hostess, the bartender, the waitress were so friendly, helpful and amazing. The atmosphere and music were so good.We were seated at the bar, our waitress helped us to pick delicious appetizers and main dishes. Each item was more delicious than the next.. We were blown away. Thanks for a great experience
Probably the best bowl of noodles Ive ever had. The broth was succulent and the noodles were perfect in every way. The large portion (priced the same as the regular) is a good deal for what you pay. It is a lot of food - I went in feeling famished and could barely get up after eating. Really awesome spot and worth revisiting.
The reason why I love google map is that they don’t miss a place like Tsurutontan in NyC🗽Of course, I was there two years ago, and I enjoyed extremely dishes. Due to the weather, I was able to remember it again, and I decided to review it.As you know, Udon is a Japanese noodle, so I love to take it when it is raining (haha Ramen, too) and their noodle is really elastic and its soup is full of flavor!!!Thus, I don’t want someone who visit in nyc miss it!!!🍲
This was not the first time there and other times I would have gave them a 5 stars but unfortunately not this time. I mean, the food was very good and I like a lot the sweet broth however we tried the spicy noodles and we were not impressed. The broth evaporated due the high temperature and the actual noodles absorbed a lot of the broth: final result after a few minutes there was no broth and the noodles were soggy. Not sure if this is how it is supposed to be but not impressed with the spicy choice. I recommend the regular noodles, those are amazing as you can see in the photo. The staff is super friendly and the huge bowl where they serve the food is so cool!
Super yummy!! The Truffle x crab cream udon I was super reluctant to get cuz I hate thick broths but this was just perfect 👌 not too heavy and the truffle flavor wasn’t overdone either! Very silky and loved the crab bits. The Spicy Salmon was also delicious -very melt in your mouth fish. Overall their choices of udon is HUGE there’s so many, plus there’s some good lunch deals too. Wasn’t busy when we went around 1 on a weekday!
Wholly cow this place was great. If you like sushi, sashimi and Udon noodle bowels this is the place to go. Want to upgrade your bowl to a large order? No charge to do so. Staff was awesome and very helpful. I would absolutely recommend going here if you are in the area.
Large & regular size both cost the same. The large size bowl has a huge portion! Ordered udon with duck and meatballs - it was delicious and I wasnt thirsty after the meal. Would recommend eating all instead of taking home for a second meal, as re-heated noodles dont taste as good. Very quick service and waiters were friendly.
This place was packed on a weds night so recommend making a reservation. Couldn’t quite make out if this was a bar scene place, Japanese home cooking shop, sushi bar or Korean fusion. However, if they’re naming the place as an udon noodle shop, that’s what i’m going to try.First, the bowl comes super large like a fruit bowl. Don’t worry, just the bowl is large, the portion is actually french food generous but not latino food generous if you know what i mean. The broth was tasty but salty. The noodles come in two sizes, thin or thick. Thin noodles are more like spaghetti thick. The noodles tasted fresh and aromatic, but have to say it came a little too soft. I prefer fresh noodles to have a chewyness to it, which it lacked. And the only vegetable that comes with a beef udon are sliced green onions.Overall, service staff were great and had a fun evening here. Prices were reasonable but if you’re going to name the restaurant as a noodle shop, i expect nothing but the best noodles. The sushi looked more appetizing to be frank. When they change their name, i’ll come back for the sushi.
Hands down must go for NY if you are a fan of udon! Was absolutely delicious, large portions and impeccable service! The price is very good ( you could get a bowl of udon bigger than your head for 20 dollars or less)Staff were so helpful and fast they made the experience absolutely unforgettable. I do recommend!!!!
I expected a lot from this place especially with their good reviews, but I was disappointed. I thought their noodles was too soft, not al dente. I hoped this place was comparable to marugame udon in hawaii, which has the best udon i ever had, but no, not even close. This place was just okay.
Really good udon! Comes very close to as eating it in Japan! Their prices are a bit high but you are paying for the fancy restaurant decor, and their noodles that are made in house. The portion size is lovely and you can pick between thick or thin udon noodles. I had ordered the sukiyaki soup based which was a bit salty for my taste and rather have the sukiyaki broth to be a bit sweeter but the soup still tasted yummy and flavorful. I would come back to try their dashi based broth.
Been here three times now and the food and service each time were wonderful! Got the curry tempura chicken udon (second photo, loved this), dan dan noodle (first photo, excellent flavor and watered down spice from regular dan dan), truffle mushroom appetizer and shishito pepper appetizer (sour! lots of yuzu). The pork belly with daikon appetizer just melted in your mouth another time I went.A regular soup size is more than enough to fill me, which paired with the ambiance and service justifies their price. I’ve upgraded to a large twice and barely finished. Recommend making a reservation online to skip the wait during peak hours.
If you want to come to eat here, make sure you booked in advance and be on time, not delayed. Having this done, it’s all about enjoying their food, cause tastes are great! Also dishes are big so be hungry when you come! There is a variety of noodles to order, with or without broth, spicy, non scipy, for vegetarian...
An amazing experience. Got the wagyu beef udon soup and my friend got the sukiyaki udon and both were just so incredible and tasty. Definitely worth it for the fusion noodle dishes and recommend the thick udon noodles for the soup dishes. Service was great as well and I will definitely be back!
Meandered in here on a rainy day, didnt realize how lucky I was until I was sitting, totally stuffed and satisfied, at the end of the meal with a giant somewhat empty bowl in front of me. The waiter was incredibly helpful, walked me and my mum through the significant menu, and gave us very good recommendations. I got the curry ramen with beef and it was delicious. My mouth burned, but just the right amount. My mum had one of the specials, a sweet potato based ramen (I think). She loved hers. Neither of us could finish our meals, despite getting the regular size (not large, which is the same price).Cant wait to go back. Highly recommend.
Went to this place today 9/4/2021,My first disappointment was that the register lady, color lady, left me talking by myself while I was still talking, second, we ordered the food and they forgot to make one of the dishes, third, we asked if we could order for take out and they said we could place the order at the front desk, went to try to place the order and they said it has to be ordered online,Sucks service!!!Forgot to mention that I asked to speak with the manager and she did not even come out and talk to me, she was there for fact, one of the other employees said that when I asked to talk to her she just ignored him and gave him a bad face, the whole staff but the cleaning people it sucks!
Not a fan of Udon but U Don Know about this place! I thoroughly enjoyed the long thick chewy and doughy noodles. The noodles were so fresh and chewy, perfect to slurp with the warm smooth broth.I ordered the curry udon. Although I think the pork katsu and shrimp tempura lost some of its crunch in the broth, it was still very flavorful and just gave me all the more reason to eat it faster! I tried the wagyu udon also and I thought the broth was a tad on the sweeter side but the veggies were a nice texture element with the chewy noodles.I dont think I can eat udon anywhere else ever again...
Pros: yummy udon at a super affordable price, all day happy hours drinks are dirt cheap, comfortable booths for large groupsCons: long wait times even with reservation, stressed & frantic hostesses, mediocre ingredients / quality of foodWaited 40 minutes to be seated past our reservation time, so the hostess gave us 2 small appetizers on the house.
Ive been wanting to come here for a long time. Finally I was in the area and had an hour to kill during lunch so I stepped in. The decor and esthetic in this restaurant is very stylish and classy in my opinion. After walking in and being shown to my table (bar) I was almost immediately greeted and given an explanation about how I can choose either a small portion, or large portion, both of which are the same price, and are served in these huge bowls that you can pretty much fit your entire head into, so obviously I went with the large. After waiting a bit I got the meal in the picture, which was their take on ramen, only with the udon noodles that this place is famous for. It was delicious. And maybe it was the fact that I came in unusually hungry and took my time eating, but I was almost able to finish the large portion. It definitely didnt feel as though the portions are large only to justify the price. All in all, great service, great food, great place.
Good broth, I thought the portions were WAY too big. You cant take anything to go so finish while youre there. The experience was not very authentic, but was largely satisfactory to our group. Id go back if I was really craving a big bowl of hot spicy soup- but otherwise its not something Id write home about. The service was not great- pretty abrupt and not helpful Id youre looking to explore the menu.
A revelation to me. A place focused on one thing...udon. With that focus came success. Some tasty tasty food. Having a tried cold udon for the first time and was so delightfully surprised that now I’m craving it again. The portions were just beyond! I just wished I had one of these places nearby so I can go try every single one of their udons...the curries, the savoury, the other chilled, the sweet etc...I can’t wait to go back
This chain is from Tokyo. I went to the one in roponggi and now the one in union square area. The serve big bowls of udon. Uní fans would like the uní udon. Sukiyaki udon is a well balanced one with beef, veggies, and mushrooms. Check out the photos. This is reasonably priced, though pricier than ramen. Not much of a wait as they have a lot of seating. Note the large portion and regular portion are the same price.
Booked a table for 5 people at 6:30 on a Friday evening. Our table was only ready once the whole party had arrived. Very crowded restaurant with lots of waiting customers! Although they say they only hold tables for 15 mins, due to the crowds of people around the receptionist, we managed to still be seated after 20 or so minutes! The restaurant is quite dark with loud music.Once seated at our table, we were greeted by Justin who was very energetic and friendly. He ran through the menus with us once and answered all the questions we had. There are a few customizable options available; thick (regular Japanese udon) or thin noodles, and regular or large size for the same price. The bowls were very large, and the portions inside were quite generous.I would definitely recommend this restaurant, and highly recommend making a reservation as the restaurant is very crowded! (Even as we left, there was still a large crowd waiting)
Very yummy udon spot! Go for the larger portion because it’s the same price as the regular portion. One of their signature dishes is the uni cream udon which I enjoyed. I prefer the thinner noodles. The spicy pork belly udon is also tasty, but be prepared to sweat if you don’t have a high tolerance for spice.
Delightfully decorated, this is a hip new chic udon spot for internationals and locals alike.I only waited a couple minutes to be seated, arriving shortly after 9pm when their evening happy hour started. The wagyu mushroom soup looked delicious! The attentive waiter took my order, I waited about ten minutes, and a large rustic pail of soup was brought to me; I dove in. Very hot soup, served with a raw egg that cooks in the bowl as youre eating. The broth was thick and a bit saltier than expected; noodles were great but I put them in the small bowl next to the big pail so theyd cool off faster. Some of the mushrooms came in clusters, attached at the root. The meat was flavorful and done well. The price was a bit high though, I paid just under $30 for the one bowl with no add-ons. For this reason I may not make it my regular go-to ramen/udon joint, but it was a nice dining experience nonetheless.
Giant bowls that easily looks like half a gallon worth of food but expensive and mediocre quality compared to other udon shops. I ordered the tsututontan which had shrimp egg chicken and beef. You would think it sounds good but what it really seems like was they threw everything in the pot and brought it to a boil. Theres a lack of consideration for the ingredients individually. Nothing tasted unique and everything had a homogeneous flavor to it, kinda boring.
Ordered Sushi Omakase in my first visit. The fish part was fresh and sweet. Besides, cutting of each piece was perfect as it’s very smooth and couldn’t chew any hard tissue inside. This was definitely a highlight because it couldn’t be avoided entirely when I went to other authentic Japanese restaurants at same level. It’s worthy the time I had waited for (in contrast to the same time wife finished her udon :p). The only imperfect thing was the rice. It’s not cooked enough time so the rice was too hard to stick together. At least three piece broke off when I dipped the sauce. Price wise it’s $$$
Ive been here numerous times. Today I ordered noodle with a mini sukiyaki rice. And I had a BIG cockroach under the beef. If I wasnt artful I couldve just had a spoonful and eaten that dead cockroach. I am feeling so gross right now so I wont even eat the new bowl the server offered. He claimed its a new bowl, but it came so fast and from the look its very hard to tell if its really a new bowl. I lost my appetite completely so I wont even touch the bowl. He offered to take that bowl off from the price but I dont want to argue anything. I just want to call down and not to throw up when I recall the cockroach thing. I dont want to put the server in a hard position since its not his fault at all. However I think whats fair is this meal should be completely free. Heres the picture.
Expansive menu, great foodThis was my first time here so I ordered the TsuruTonTan Deluxe regular size with udon noodles. Was a huge portion and didnt finish. Had started with the cucumber appetizer and finished with the Japanese water cake. Will be back to try more things on the menu.
I love udon so thought to give this place a shot. Went to the Union Square location and ordered the TanTan Udon. Got the extra noodles (no additional cost) and it was great. It was a generous portion. Will definitely go again to try the rest of the menu. Price is on the high end for noodles but i feel like it was worth it. There are cheaper options available. Ill probably try the Kitsune next time.
Not the place to go if youre looking for fine crafted traditional udon. This place showcases specialty/fusion udon and the non-traditional soups are creative and tasty enough. The place serves ambience in spades. The vibe and decor have a certain wow factor. Even the serving implements are impressive. Service was efficient and professional.----If youre a traditional udon connoisseur, you may be disappointed by the noodles lack of structure and texture. The excellent ones require the dough to undergo intense pressure, ie, flour diamond. The noodles should be firm with initial resistance followed by an elastic give. They should not be soft and disperse in your mouth. The traditional dashi-based broth needs to play around on the borders of depth of umami and a clean mouthfeel. Its an art where the chef checks and adjusts balance throughout the day as water and freshness evaporate in the master pot.
The server took the time to explain all the soup dishes and asked if I had any allergies or preferred something in particular and helped me make a decision based on that. The portions are pretty big I could barely finish my dish. You cant take anything to go but its worth it especially if youre coming with a big crowd. There is usually a wait especially during lunch and apparently theres a different menu for dinner but its definitely a good choice if youre looking to eat something warm and filling.
Love the vibe here! It’s a modern Japanese fusion vibe. A little dark but suitable with the decorations. I had the cold udon with uni and salmon roe. Uni is fresh and melts in your mouth like butter. Salmon roe is fragrant and flavorful. All go very well with the udon and the cold sauce. Staffs are very friendly and attentive. They have two sizes for everything. One for personal and one for sharing. Great find in this area!

2022-03-03Very popular restaurant, be sure to reserve prior to going. We missed our reservation due to parking issues and were seated on the first floor all the way in the back right next to the restroom. The food was alright, fast service. Uni could have been cleaned better.

2022-01-19This was by far the best bowl of udon I’ve very had. The sukiyaki beef was unbelievably flavorful and the beef itself was delightfully cooked. It was around medium, really tender, which is such a delight since so many souls will end up a little tough if overcooked. The sushi was solid, definitely really fresh. The udon is the real star of the show though! Highly, highly recommended. The interior of the restaurant is beautiful, too.

2022-02-27Great food, big portions, low prices (especially Mon to Wed with all day happy hour), large number of options including sushi, sashimi and appetizers, nice ambience and decorations especially near the bar, clean. Would definitely revisit. They also have dividers between each table. We had the spicy garlic chicken and shrimp dumpling for starters and both were really good. For the entree I had the truffle crab cream udon noodle and it was amazing. The broth was creamy, rich and flavorful, the noodle had a great bite and there was a good amount of mushrooms and crab meat. Everyone in my group loved the food and three of us packed up the leftovers due to the large portions.

2022-08-12Such good noodles! I was so so impressed by how yummy the udon here was. Prices are pretty standard across the menu between $20-30, and there are so many options. The atmosphere in the restaurant is also really great - it feels so well designed and hip. Great experience from start to finish!

2021-12-13Upscale Japanese noodle chain, this review is for the Union Square location. The good:- Large selection of udon, sushi and roll options.- Upscale ambiance.- some creative appetizers, spicy tuna in a cone, picture included.- Flavors are decent, but not fantastic. The not so good:- very pricy.- my dish which is pictured, uni, crab and salmon roe on rice was $40, but I luv Uni so was willing to pay the price.- Flavors are decent, but no fantastic, I put this comment in both areas, since i felt the taste and flavors were some where in the middle.- They seemed to be in a rush to get us finished and out the door. All in all, if youre willing to pay the upscale prices, this chain mildly delivers, but by no means is it a fantastic experience.

2022-04-29Food 6/10Decent udon, wasn’t outstanding. A little too salty without any complexity in the flavors. Still ate a decent amount because I love the chew of the udon, but nevertheless it was slightly disappointing.Atmosphere 7/10Very average restaurant, minimal and a little dim inside.Service 7/10Good service!

2022-06-21Even though it looks delicious, it is not. Udon is full of sugar. Udon pasta is too soft. And you cannot even taste the wagyu beef. You dont have to make everything sugary like crazy just because people like it. you have to show some respect for traditional tastes. You must preserve the originality. How to turn udon noodles into a mcdonalds quality meal and get $100 for that sugary taste. The perfect place for those without any taste buds. What is good? Salmon fish was quality. And the staff is friendly. But for a place famous for udon, it was the one of the most fast food taste not sophisticated udon we have ever tried. Since the food is not particularly cheap, the place doesn’t deserve more than one star.

2022-02-21Very filling BIG bowl of udon. I got spicy tantan(minced pork w/sesame oil), but it wasn’t spicy, had two or three shishito peppers inside already, but tangy instead and a lil over salty.Would come again to try other udons tho.I added appetizers shishito peppers and soy garlic into my udon soup broth when it all came, it was good, but alone its salty.Service waa good host and everyone was nice.Pricy but its manhattan so not too bad.(~$50 3things)

2022-04-13I arrived late in the afternoon, luckily lunch menu is still available.I ordered the Uni (cold) Udon. It did not disappoint me. Fresh and qualitu uni (sea urchin) , and freshly made udon. Its delicious. I like the way it come with a piece of Shiso (Perilla) leaf. The dressing is rich and not too thick. I enjoyed every bite of the dish.

2022-02-07I loved the atmosphere, and the service was great. Its just I had a higher expectation for the sushi, which didnt seem as fresh as I hoped. But after all, this is an udon place. The udon was absolutely delicious. I saw other parties have huge bowls of udon... I hope to try one one day!
