Union Market in other cities:
An upscale market with nice selection of specialty items. The veggie section is well kept and fresh. Good cheese selection and small meat and sea food sections. Some deli and prepared foods and a small bakery section. Store is clean and staff is helpful. A smaller, friendlier Whole Foods type store but also more expensive. I usually split my shopping between here and the Trader Joes on 14th and A.
Love this grocery store! I dont do the majority of my grocery shopping here but I think this place is worth going to if you want a good selection of clean fruits and vegetables. Not everything is crazily overpriced as it may seem. A lot of the items I pick up here are reasonably priced! I love buying the fresh squeezed orange juice, rotisserie chicken, and the produce here. All my other groceries I pick up at KeyFoods just because some items I dont necessarily need to be organic or super healthy. Sometimes I just want to buy a dozen eggs for $1.89 not $6 from union market.Overall, you can find a lot of good deals here and I highly recommend if you live in the area.
Been to this supermarket twice and although it’s clean and organized we were treated like we weren’t wanted in the store as of because we are black we don’t belong in there I swear I felt like someone was following us the whole time . I will never shop here again till everyone is treated the same.
Expensive, but a lux experience compared to Key Food. Some thing are so marked up here its worth going to a big grocery store instead (condensed milk for example, was twice as expensive as it would be anywhere else).Produce, proteins and cheese is expensive here buy way better than nearby stores. Worth it for that stuff. In short, if you can swing a markup on stuff this is a good place to shop. Feels very COVID friendly, not that crowded and the people who work there are very nice.
This grocery always has fresh produce and a pretty good selection given how small it is for a grocery store. A little expensive but worth it if youre in a pinch. They have a great deli with amazing pre-made food. The staff is always friendly with good advice and very knowledgeable. I always enjoy going into this place.
This is a really nice and convenient place with a good selection of fresh fruits and veggies and a nice clean meat department. WOW they are expensive though.I will continue to go here on an as needed basis. If their prices were better I’d reconsider. The people that work there are super friendly. I actually enjoy them the most.
Union opened here, planning on hundreds of up-and-coming New Yorkers filing in for groceries before they climb up into their groovy pads nearby. Indeed it appears to have worked. And the rest of the hood is often here, even tourists - this place, with its narrow aisles, can get stopped up at peak times.Fabulous fresh and varied bread daily. Superior selection and quality from many local bakeries.Fresh vegetables. In midwinter this is a real treat. Veggies and fruit expensive unless on special.Good cheese selection.Packaged exotic and local roasted coffee.Fresh fish (and meat) with live butchers! This is by far not all this Union offers (its a pretty complete food store). This is a snapshot of the areas this reviewer likes and has had adequate experience with.
They have one of the largest cheeses selection that I have ever seen. They have great selection of vegetables and fruits as well. The meat department is smaller than Whole Foods but they still have the main items. Usually there is line at the register but it moves fast. Staff is friendly.
I recently found this place because it is not on my usual commute route. But this is a nice market with a lot of fresh vegetable and fruits options. If you like buy ingredients and cook by yourself, you will love this place. I can get everything I need to make lunch sandwiches, dinner rolls, office snacks, to-go nuts, etc.
Not only do I shop here, but I work here. Not only is it a very high end place to shop, but all of their products are nothing but the finest. Their prepared foods dept serves a half rotisserie chicken meal with two sides for such a reasonable price that fast food for dinner is obsolete. Theres no better place to get a healthy and quick meal after a long day at work. Not to mention their quality meat, seafood and produce as well as their outstanding assortment of daily baked breads. Definitely Your Neighborhood Source for Fine Foods.
The location is great and the quality of the food looks good. They try and sell $2.99 for a hot drink and pastry to draw in the morning crowd. Honestly though, the prices are high compared to whole foods down the street. Plus the way they have their store set up forces you to walk in a zig zag through it, which can be kind of confusing at times. Hope this helps!
Life saver! This place literally saved my life bc I was experiencing a hypoglycemic reaction and this store had all the essentials. Plus there was a bench outside to relax and regroup. Dont know where Id be without this place or what wouldve happened. Only thing that I wasnt crazy about was priced. Items seemed to be a bit marked up. But I guess its understandable given the highly coveted location. Lastly, staff was extremely courteous and friendly- have to love that aspect.
I love this (not so) little market. They have a great variety of fresh produce, cheeses, an olive bar and both a butcher and a fish monger. Along with the fresh foods they have a nice pre-cooked home cooking. Today I got roasted beets with candied pistachios and truffle vinegrette and creamed spinach with gruyere cheese. Tip: never go in there hungry. Definitely not the cheapest but nice for a splurge.
They dont let you try the fish for freshness. I understand if I had no intent on buying anything, but after acknowledging I was going to buy the salmon, I wanted to try the scallops to see if they were worth buying. The man told me no. If you arent willing to sample out your seafood. Thats definitely a warning sign!
3.5 stars.4 Stars for freshness and quality.3 Stars for Price4 Stars for helpfulness of the StaffThere seems to be always samples to try like cheese, crackers, chips, pickles and olives. Every time I try something there I buy it...but thats it! Everything else is expensive. In terms of snacks and small bites, this is a pretty good place to check out. But prices can be high and may possibly make a hole in your pocket. This store represents why New York City is so expensive. But quality and freshness is all here. They try to fill in the neighborhood void of markets, which is now full of restaurants and bars, with simple necessities new yorkers need...but at a high price.
Great place they have really good prepared food everything is good.. its a very convenient location for me right on Houston and avenue A.. they have really good fresh fruits and vegetables and a lot of other fresh foods and fantastic bread Im really happy they open this place so close to home its not much else I can say just that its a great place and if youre in this area you should definitely try it
Inside this neighborhood market youll find everything a natural heart desires. Sustainable farmed salmon, nut thins, vegan ice cream, and veggies galore are available. The only downside is the cramped spaces down the narrow with a lot of shoppers, but I suppose this is the norm in NYC.
The rudest. The only kind female worker is the Black girl. The Arabian looking woman has such a filthy energy doesnt even greet you upon going to her register. I said hi and nothing. They also make up prices it is strange. Until I checked my receipt one day, I was paying a fortune for food since they charged me the wrong price the entire time. Rip off store with miserable morning women charging fake high prices on customers that are not watching.
I love shopping here! I come here for their fresh and organic produce. Their bagel/pastry morning special is what gets my day started. That said, I find it quite absurd that with such an abundantantly stocked supermarket/deli, they are unable to cut tomatoes to add to a bagel or sandwich at a customer’s request.I find this interesting considering that I’ve ordered sandwiches from this location where one of the ingredients called for a...(that’s right you guessed it) a tomato! To add even more comedy to this tomato sitch, when the Caucasian lady in front of me ordered her sandwich the guy at the deli suddenly made it rain tomatoes. If there’s one thing I love more than racially biased interactions at 7 am, it’s minorty on minority Uncle Tomery from the Latino union market worker half my age. : )slave mentality...Happy shopping!
The details that make it worth it..lots of high quality stuff good turnover, and decent prices. some stuff a little pricey but simple things like a plastic bag on the baguette on a rainy day or a free recycleable bag when I came in during the snowstorm make it all well worth it!!!
On the last 3 times Ive shopped here Ive been OVERCHARGED. The prices marked on items do not always reflect what is in the system. On two occasions the shop assistant told me the correct price is what is in the system and *not what is marked on the product*. Unacceptable!

2022-04-14The employees are great but extremely overprice. There prices are way higher the any other supermarket and there’s absolutely nothing unique or different. Whole Foods sales more unique items and at a lower price and they are just 4 blocks away.

2022-04-21Not overpriced; no idea why people are saying this. Many items are the same price as the local supermarket, Key Foods, and their own brand organic milk and eggs are much cheaper. The produce has better variety than Whole Foods and their meat and fish may be costlier, but you definitely get what you pay for.

2022-07-07You’re better off walking two more blocks to Whole Foods.Too expensive, too niche, has everything and nothing at the same time. One time, I got a pound of mussels and they were all dead.I give it two stars because their pesto is perfect. It’s my favorite store bought pesto.

2021-09-22Expensive but during the pandemic - it was the only place stocked with food. and they are a great group of friendly people. and super helpful! the sushi is good and they have a large selection of beers gourmet of course ha! and they sell the ronny brook egg nog in the winter (in the bottle) it tastes like old time egg nog that grandma used to make. but also is like $8 /qt. still good tho. great selection of ice creams and veggie burgers. also they have laundry detergents / soaps / and kitchen misc items. i am posting some great hot fudge sundae that i made today from some vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup that i bought today at union market

2022-02-06If youre going to spend good money and able to walk a few blocks west, do yourself a huge favor -- SKIP union market, and instead, go to Whole Foods. I grew up in the LES/East Village and succumbed some of to the charming benefits of gentrification (cafes, gift shops, Supper), so I was excited when UM came to my hood. However, this store is a complete disappointment in every way, from pricing to quality. Everything, EVERYTHING, is completely overpriced, boxes and bags of dry goods on the shelves are EXPIRED or close to it, as are dairy products! AND, every time I have bought fish or seafood at the UM counter, it has been spoiled and smelled TERRIBLE; at first I would just throw it away, but the past few times, I have gone back to the store and returned spoiled fish, mussels, shrimp, etc. DO NOT buy the shrimp cocktail that youll find near the register -- its almost always INEDIBLE!

2021-10-06Love the Sushi, the fresh bread, the desserts and all the fresh produce! Great gourmet place. Yes it can be pricey as some have said, but its not just some average market. So its worth the price for me!

2021-09-09This supermarket looks very organized and clean, but I honestly dont know how fresh their food is. In a year or so that I been a customer there, Ive gotten sick at least 3 times from eating their food from the deli dept. For a while I stopped buying food from the deli to avoid the frustration of getting sick, but I decided to go back and once again it happened... its funny because their refrigerated food looks so fresh, and appetizing, but Im now convinced its not always fresh... it was actually their roasted chicken and kale that made me sick.
