Ive been going to Reuben for haircuts for many years at this point and have never been disappointed. He opened this barber shop in 2020, he used to be at Columbia Barbers on 121st and Broadway. Every single guy in one of my extracurricular clubs would go get his hair cut at Reubens!
Ruben is one of the best barbers I’ve ever been to. He is professional, friendly, attentive, and does exactly what you ask. The haircuts are great, have never felt rushed and he makes sure every detail is what you wanted. This is now my go-to barbershop. I could not recommend this shop more.
Absolutely horrible!!The lady who cut my hair doesnt know how to perform a pixie short haircut for womens. She literally shaved my hair in a super weird way.The guy who I guess is the owner is not very friendly, super nosy.. and first thing that he asked when I went inside, was where are you from? I told him where I come from (European non Spanish speaking country) and my country of birth ( just to be polite and friendly) and then immediately told me you can speak Spanish with the hairdresser (Really not polite to make generalisation). Total lack of cultural intelligence and customer service.

Universal Barber Shop (Columbia) is a first rate barber shop. I received multiple haircuts and shaves from Ruben over the course of 3 months. Ruben is a master with a pair of clippers and his straight razor skills are beyond compare.I will go back when I am in NYC.
Best barber shop in the area! Reuben is fantastic at what he does. I always walk out of here with a fresh, nice looking cut in a very reasonable amount of time. The shop is clean and neat and has been extremely COVID-conscious, which makes me feel even better about coming here. There are only two chairs in the shop, and everyone’s masked at all times. They also take temperatures and contact info upon entry and often cut with the door propped for airflow. Highly recommend!!
I randomly decided to get a haircut and came here based on the reviews I read online. Im so happy it didnt disappoint! I met Marina and she did a wonderful job giving me a pixie cut. The service was quick and the price was great. Will definitely come back :)
If you ask me what is one best thing occuring to me this month, its going to this barber shop. I had had a terrible haircut and decided to have my redemption in here. More than expected, the hair dresser rescued my hair! His professionalism and expertise are unquestionable. Plus, he has the empathetic ability that he can understand your needs without too much asking!

Outstanding barber shop with friendly, but quiet staff! Went here for a scissors cut ($30) after 4 months of quarantine. Ruben gave an amazing cut that was so good my wife is no longer angry at me for ditching her to grab a beer with the boys. Thank you!
Dont go. Overpriced, not professional and not clean—Barber, could you at least wear a mask during a pandemic? or could you maybe clean you hand? There are other much better and cheaper barber shops around Columbia.
Ive visited thrice, and plan to again whenever Im in the city. My barber does an excellent job of turning my daydreams into reality. My haircut was nice. I will recommend the barbershop to my friends!
Ruben gives the best haircut in the city, and at very competitive prices. Never had a bad cut here and Ive been dozens of times over the years.

Reuben is the legend. I only trust him with my haircut. Time after time he gets it right.The place is tidy and you may have to wait because this guys is popular... But its worth it.You wont find a better place in the are, thats for sure.

2022-01-27Best in the Upper West! Coming here over a year now. I had tried a few others in the area first but didnt compare. Its a very relaxed environment with no frills just solid haircuts! Rubin is my go to. Fantastic old school barber and a very nice man but have had cuts from everyone there, always happy.

2022-01-30Twice now I have been disappointed by my haircut from here. They are very friendly and give good haircuts (youre not going to come out looking like a crazy person), however they have never been able to give me what we agree upon before starting. Very frustrating.

2022-02-15Not the place to get a haircut if you’re black. Nice barbers, they just don’t do a good job cutting non-straight hair. My fade was starting to grow out and at a point where it would be easy to see see how it was previously - apparently not because he did his own thing and pushed back my hairline.

2022-03-22I have been going to Universal Barber Shop since it opened a few years ago and I went to their other location on Broadway btwn 121st and 122nd before that for about five years. Ruben is an amazing barber who always does a great job! He takes the time to do it right every time. I cant imagine going to anyone else.I have a friend who used to live in NYC and now lives in Honolulu. Every time he returns to NYC he goes to Ruben for a shave because he cant get a shave like that anywhere hes tried in Honolulu.

2022-07-02This place is NOT universal. The service I got today was sloppy, clearly lacking knowledge about my hair type (4B), and over-priced service for a simple cut task of cutting off my sideburns. The barber was about to end the haircut without giving me a shape up (a separate cost apparently), and clearly wanted me to look messy walking out of there since he put in minimal care to cut my hair. After all was finished he had the nerve to ask me for a tip (which I unfortunately gave him) only to fix the bad fade, crooked shape up, and untrimmed sideburns myself at home. If youre a professional, you should be doing a professional job.

2021-11-25I dont really know why other people are happy with the service. I called the barbershop before going in and was told that there is no line. I arrived 4 minutes after the call and there are still 2 people in front of me. I didnt really know why the barbers in the shop decides to dress like they operate in the prison. Once I got a taste of how they cut, I understood. They were very rough with their hands and did not smile even a little bit. I got one of the worst haircut for the $35. Perhaps they are not good with dealing with my type of hair, but their attitude for service is just confusing. Stone faced the entire time. Will never ever go back again. I suggest you do that the same.

2022-02-24First-time customer, walked in for a haircut on a Thursday afternoon with no appointment. I was a little trepidatious. When you go to a new place, youre never sure how its going to go; sometimes they cut too short or give you something different than you asked for. UBS is no frills, cash only, but no wait, very reasonably priced, and Igor did a great job. He didnt talk much, but so what? I dont come for conversation. He listened carefully, double checked with me to make sure he was cutting the right length, and delivered exactly what I asked for. I plan to come back for my next haircut and would recommend to others.

2021-11-16I stopped in for a haircut on my lunch break. The wait was less than 10 minutes while they finished up with another customer. Marina took her time to understand exactly what I was looking for and then she delivered it perfectly! My haircut was only $35 (this is super cheap for a ladys haircut) and Im thrilled with how it looks. I will definitely be going back.
