I have been buying plants consistently from this place since last summer.Unfortunately my last visit was really disappointing. I asked for a team member to get me different plants as I pointed at them. Then I heard the guy talking to the cashier and laughing. I didn’t get why.I payed them and when I got home I realized they sold me 5/5 unhealthy plants (brown roots)I then understood why they were laughing while I was paying the plants.I tried potting them anyway and as expected, after only two days the plants are dried.
Amazing plant selection. Would deserve a 5 stars rating normally.-2 stars for dumb covid policies. Despite being outdoors, they require masks, which although mostly unnecessary, isnt terrible by itself. But most of the employees wear masks improperly (nose or even mouth uncovered), so it seems hypocritical. They also only allow 3 people into their greenhouse at a time, while their employees are inside without masks, which is way worse than having more people inside with masks. Finally they recommend gloves, which is explicitly against medical advice (they dont protect you while also giving you a false sense of security that promotes risk taking). I respect the intent, but looking up the science would also be good.
I wanted to surprise my friend with a house plant to prove that she can keep a plant alive, and to also show her that caring for plants doesn’t have to be intimidating. I ordered a 6” mother-in-law’s tongue from Urban Garden Center. I spoke with a friendly and helpful employee who answered my questions regarding their curbside delivery option. The plant, terra cotta pot and saucer were all delivered on time and in excellent condition! The delivery person was courteous. I would definitely use Urban Garden Center again.
I absolutely love this place. Walking around looking at the plants and their environment, you can tell that whoever works there and tends to the plants and flowers, they do such an amazing job. Ive bought quite a few plants from UGC and Ive had zero problems with them. I check plants for any pests, damage, diseases, etc before I purchase from anywhere and Ive never seen their plants have any issues, everything seems to be very healthy. The staff are SUPER helpful with any questions you have, assistance is carrying heavy items to your car/cab. They always have sales for holidays and every weekend, plants are 30-40% off which is amazing. They deliver, and offer different services.
Great tree, great service. Only complaint is that - we’re in a global pandemic. Delivery people did not have masks when they came to deliver our tree in a house full of unvaccinated children. Inappropriate and dangerous. Considering the high expense for this service, I would expect a bit of courtesy and responsibility.
I do like this Garden Center and they do have a good amount of plants. But what bothers me about this center is that the plants have no prices on them. I recently went there to look for a string of hearts. I found one that was $40. I was going to get that one because they had a 50% off sale on plants. I then found a smaller version of the plant and was told that too was also $40. Id seem fishy, and as there were any prices on the plants how am I supposed to know if that was the actually price of if worker was just coming up with these prices on his own. They really need to put prices on these plants
My fiance and I bought a fig tree here a couple of weeks ago. The product is beautiful and well maintained. The staff was very helpful with the purchasing and delivery of the tree. I was concerned about how to care for the plant so I called back recently and spoke to Sarah who was very informative. It’s nice to know how to care for a plant from an expert. I highly recommend going and checking out their inventory. I just like going and walking through all of the plants. Feels like an oasis in the middle of the city.
Nice tranquil spot in a most unexpected place. They carry many plants (indoor and outdoor) varieties. As well as many different sizes. Lots of lay pots and trees and rocks. You can roam around and take your time, and nobody will bother you. The staff is friendly and very helpful.
In a sea of large / corporate chain stores, Urban Garden Center is a beacon of how a small businesss ability to actually connect with their customers can make a huge difference.I had several questions regarding my order and *not only* did I receive an email from the owner directly in response, *but also* had pleasant and helpful interactions with the staff. Highly, highly recommend this gem of a business. #buyplants
It was a pleasure visiting Urban Garden Center. The experience was great, walking doe-eyed amid hundreds of plants, and became even better when Ramona guided us through. Wonderful NYC-approved flora, planters, and expertise in this field. Highly recommend purchasing from here.
Summary: This place is a SCAM!!! Horrible customer service, they inflate prices online and plants arrive with price stickers with lower prices. They stole money from us and there is no follow up on returning it!!! Stay away!Full Story: My husband ordered online from Urban Garden Center, we received the delivery and one plant was missing. Ok no problem we thought! We will just call and get the amount back, then we noticed price stickers on the pots of the plants that we did receive and prices were lower (- $5 each more/less) than what we have paid online. I emailed their info@ email with pictures and invoice copy and got no reply, I followed up still no reply, then I called and finally got someone on the phone. The women I spoke to told me that she will credit back the amount for missing plant and discrepancy in price back to original payment method. Great but no, I received the notification of the return and saw that the payment method that they credited money to is a completely different one, they credited VISA card and we payed with AMEX....I called again, explained the whole situation (and send them an email with prove that we paid with AMEX and they credited VISA card) that same women promised to call me back and sort it out and credit us the amount to the card that we paid with but I heard nothing back. I try calling again but no answer second day in a row.... I honestly cant believe it, its been more than a month and I feel like we will never get our money back... they owe us $45... I would not recommend, stay away...Funny thing is that we wanted to support small local business by shopping with Urban Garden Center and not HomeDepot but at the end with the customer service that we got I regret it so much!
I received a housewarming gift in the form of a gift certificate to this store. After reading so many wonderful reviews and seeing that they had curbside delivery during COVID, I was really looking forward to buying from this store. Unfortunately, it has been over two months since I placed my order and I have had to call over thirty times. When I finally got in touch with the store, they were surprised that I had not received anything yet and promised to call me back. It took several more days before they would answer my call again and once again they didnt know what was going on. Their voice mailbox was full and I sent many emails. They finally delivered last week and almost every single pot and saucer was broken. I was told they would be replaced the next day, so I waited in my apartment for them to ring up. They never showed up. After many more unanswered calls and emails, they finally came to deliver the replacements two days later without advance notice (luckily I was available), and once again, the order is wrong, and once again, they are not responding. I have filed a dispute of the charges with my bank. Perhaps this company is good in-person, but I dont recommend anybody order from them...unless you want lots of anxiety and wasted money.
Great place to stop by and adopt a plant. Great location, great staff, but there are some minuses There are no prices on indoor plants. At times they seem to run out of plants or the plants in stock do not look healthy. There is only one area to pay/check out. The staff is very nice and its a good place for indoor and outdoor garden needs and ideas.
Great selection of Christmas trees, no Fraser Firs but a hybrid that has strong needles and good smell. Only one guy working the trees, so be patient. He didnt rush me, even helped me find a fatter tree and opened it up so I could verify. Good prices in this odd year of double prices on Fraser Firs at temporary tree stands! Love supporting this local company.
Nice selection though not for anything really rare. Nothing is labeled unless by the grower, though thats ok. I know my stuff. But what about prices? No prices listed. So I expected to buy about ten medium plants and maybe two big plants, and I bought nothing. Too much trouble to ask for every little thing all over the huge store. Only one guy knows the prices so anyone you ask has to ask him (hes busy and surly). Ask about specific plants he says I dont know. Theyre all over. Great, thats helpful. Oh and theres a sign for 25% off but no one knows when it starts. Truly disappointing! Didnt think a store could take the fun out of plant shopping, but they did.
Terrible experience. Three times the wrong order was delivered. The herb plants were scrawny and more expensive than the local farmers’ market, which had far better herbs. After asking if they might simply drop off the last missing herb for all of the hassle ($5 on their part), I never heard from them. I’d never buy here again nor recommend this place to anyone. They get one star because the person on the phone was friendly and tried to be helpful.
One start because of their prices. Ive been here several times just to browse and compare. Literally outrageous comparatively. In Harlem there are at least 3 other plant shops that sell the same plants for half the cost. I wanted a simple Ivy Plant and it was $35...got the same plant at a hardware and plant store on 125th for $20. I wanted an alocasia polly they were charging $45. Another plant store on ACP and 119th? $20. Potters, soil, even the planting accessories are so outrageously upcharged. I got an identical red pot from a place in lower manhattan for $12. The same branded pot at Urban Garden Center? $25. Do your research folks, there are other places in town that are much more affordable with the same quality plants with folks who are just as knowledgeable.
I had nothing but headaches with this company. A friends grandmother passed and I ordered a plant to be delivered on a Friday. They were out of the pot that I wanted and never called to tell me they couldnt deliver Saturday. Got that resolved..plant was suppose to be delivered Monday. Found out from friends husband it wasnt delivered. Called Tuesday and was told they were unable to get ahold of anyone calling, buzzing and doorman was missing. Got delivered Tuesday. No real apologies for the headaches. They are expensive and with no tracking; I think Ill stick with the bigger companies who are more reliable.
Amazing selection of indoor and outdoor plants tucked under the Metro North tracks! Staff were really helpful and friendly, and prices really reasonable by NYC standards. Yes, I could’ve gotten the same plant off of Amazon for $5 less, but an extra $5 is more than worth supporting a 4th gen NYC family-owned business, and knowing what you’re getting for your money!
They have an impressive selection, Awesome place nice people too.. they have a huge variety of plants for home or gardens. This is one of those places you have to visit more then once. The staff was very friendly, patient and helpful. A good way to get started with our garden. The plants are also very inexpensive especially since they are not a big box retailer.
They have an impressive selection, but unfortunately none of the indoor plants are labeled. I was interested in picking up some plants for my first terrarium, and Im not yet able to simply identify plants by sight. Short of asking a worker to ID each plant that interested me, there were no other options. Since I didnt have a lot of time to have a worker ID each plant, I left empty-handed. Had the indoor plants had labels or tags, I likely would have bought a few.
Was there with my mom and dad terrible experience the sales reps have no idea what theyre doing with the biggest attitude. I emailed the owner to ask a few questions got the most ridiculous response the owner has such an attitude when arriving the game to the premises the owner was yelling at his work hes screaming person totally disrespectful person. After speaking with some other customers at the Garden Center we all had the same feelings and emotions and a terrible experience would never go back there again the plants that they sell plants and flowers dont last long very overpriced when trying to return a plant that died one day later the only gave such an attitude I dont understand how they kiss to survive in business they have no work ethnics no respect so customers my worst experience ever shopping if I could give a zero-star I would. We spent $200 2 days later all the plants died.
I love this place and give them a lot of respect for the way theyve grown The customer service could use a little love. I got a hassle from a young clerk regarding my face mask...go figure. But aside from that this is a GREAT place for your plant and gardening needs. I highly recommend Urban Garden Center.
Great selection! knowledgeable staff that helps so you find what you are looking for. They modified the pot size so it would fit the size I needed and provided extra items to prevent water leakage. I highly recommend this place if you are looking for great selection, service, and prices.
Urban Garden Center is a joy to browse at. Within walking distance from my apartment Ill always make a few trips a year in the summers. But covid has taken its toll on the business. The employees have become apathetic/unhelpful and the checkout process is ungodly slow. I was 7th in line, and did not check out for an hour.I think the issue is the orientation of the cashier and the indoor plants department. With a limit of one person(?) inside at a time, its stunting checkout efficiency.Ill re-review once this gets solved. Please move the cashier or invest in Square/PayPal remote card readers so multiple employees can checkout at the same time.Im completely understanding with the local limitations due to this pandemic, but please treat your customers with respect and make the shopping experience more helpful. There was only one empathetic employee in my entire experience.
Went to Home Depot: it was packed - and I mean packed - with non-socially distancing people. I darent go in for fear of Covid. So then I went to the Urban Garden Center. Lovely, not crowded, and they had the topsoil I needed at a good price. Also, I bought a wreath which was lovely but expensive. But hey, this is Noo Yawk.
Great place for outdoor and indoor plants. I run a block association and do the gardening for my building and I buy all my plants and gardening supplies from them. Their selection is much better than many of the other city place..... better than a lot of suburb places too. Really helpful staff and very customer service oriented.
I called mid-afternoon on a Friday to see if they could plant my window (balcony) boxes for me. They said they could probably do it in a couple of hours! On my way over I realized I forgot to ask the charge. How nice that there was NO service charge, just the cost of the plants and soil. The people working there, from the woman on the phone to the guys doing the work could not have been nicer!
I want to start by sayin Ive never done a review before but when I get great service I speak on it because these days its rare. I was making an online purchase with them on soap which they usually do not ship out. I emailed before I made the purchase as advised on the website and I got prompt service and answers to my questions. A guy named Dimitri was the one who handled my order. He did everything necessary to assist me and even shipped my products and emailed the tracking information. The response times were even great. I will definitely do business with this company again. The level of professionalism was amazing & Im sure Ill love my product which Ive been searching high and low for. Thanks Dimitri!!!
Awful customer service. I called before I made the trek up there and was told they had an item in stock for $125. When I arrived, I asked the woman working there for help finding it. She barely looked up from her desk, and seemed annoyed that I was bothering her by asking for assistance. Begrudgingly, she located the plant (which looked sparse and it poor condition) and it was $175, not $125, and a completely different size than described on the phone. I asked why I was given misinformation, and she stared at me blankly and said, the owner probably told you that and she isnt good with remembering things, before she walked away from us, rudely, without a word. Seems like they have a good selection of plants, but the service was so offensive Id never go back or, in good conscious, give them my money. Note to the owners: keep an eye on who is representing your shop and interacting with customers.
Terrible. My order was delayed by weeks, required a few calls and the plants seemed much smaller than the ones I selected. Then after a month two of the three died. Urban Garden basically did not care and was not helpful. Its a fun place to visit but I would not purchase there. Just over the GW is an amazing nursery in Ft. Lee - they deliver too!
My wife was there earlier and was basically shamed for wearing a mask. The sales man was aggressive and said “I feel sorry for u, you’re living in fear” at the checkout. He wasn’t wearing a mask, and many of the other workers weren’t either. No social distancing, totally unacceptable. We went there to support local business, big mistake.
After reading all the great reviews I had high hopes, but was never asked if I needed help, when I had questions I was met with either indifference or monosyllabic answers (except for one man there one time on my way out) and the cashier was extremely rude with a bad attitude. No thank yous good days can I help you or advice on plants at check-out. She put my plants in a plastic bag which I had to carefully remove and reposition since they were getting smushed and bent. When I told her I didnt want the plants to come loose and the dirt to fall out, she said well at least it will be in the bag. Neither her nor the woman next to her said anything to me after paying. My Aloe Vera is now crooked and bent thanks to her. This woman seemed not to care - I was not taken care of there at all and would absolutely never ever give them my business again or recommend them. Also, for such a trek uptown, the prices arent even that great.
I was working on film that needed last minute a ton of evergreens and winter plants. I called all over town and I mean ALL over. These guys were the only ones that were able to get me over 60 trees /plants of various sizes and deliver them to Suffolk county. I called on Friday and they got them to me on Sunday. I am extremely thankful to Dimitri and Sarah! Wow. A++
This place is a true NYC gem. A wonderful garden center tucked under the MetroNorth tracks at 116th and Park, is truly the perfect contrast in urban living: The roar of train above you and a lush oasis around you. It is clear that this place is family owned by the service offered and the down to earth - non corporate feel. Already bought our pansies and looking forward to when its warmer to stock up.
Hidden under the MetroNorth elevated tracks, the Urban Garden Center is a cool family run establishment that has good inventory, great prices, and something for everyone. I walked away with some houseplants, while my boyfriend found some used books. Even better, a lot of the plants are locally grown!
I pass by here during my jog sometimes. The location has two exits. One in the front under the subway bridge and one in the back. More recently I started purchasing smaller plants . But just the other day I witness a old lady (staff) belittle and shout at a group of handicap people. It was really toxic and ill mannered. Definitely avoiding this place in the future.
Not only does this place carry a variety of amazing plants but the STAFF is amazing and knowledgable. First, when I called the woman on the phone she was pleasant and when I met her in person a half hour before closing, she was even more pleasant. I wanted a plant as a housewarming gift for my colleague and she helped me select the perfect pot which happens to be one of her favorites, and omg she re-potted the plant at no additional charge. The customer service deserves 10 stars. I would recommend visiting the Urban Garden Center even if it is just for the experience. I love plants and will definitely return and tell anyone who will listen about my experience. Thank you Urban Garden Center Staff, youre the best and I wont go anywhere else!!!!

2022-06-19The transplanting of my 55 year old plant was done beautifully. This was the 6th transplant since 1967 but the most delicate as it involved separating several stalks and downsizing to 2 smaller potsGreat job and it has never looked better!

2022-03-24I love walking through there, big trees, large plants to tiny babies. The owners are nice they have a Q&A, sessions on Instagram, they post up coming sales for the weekend.

2022-05-06🐝 Buzzing, busy local business; worth the wait for beautiful healthy plants personally advised — based on environmental details of my garden.🌲This was a personal project, and they took time to engage with my design and concerns thoughtfully. 🚛 Delivery was impeccable. The driver insisted on treating me like a lady, and moved all my heavy trees and bales of earth to where I could most easily work with them, basically white-glove level care.💯

2022-04-20This place is absolutely WONDERFUL! Great and healthy plants, reasonable prices (for NY standards), awesome sales/discounts (follow on IG or sign up for emails), but most importantly— I so love the people who work there! I went in for a bamboo palm a few weeks ago and had the best experience during this particular outing. Between the man who usually works the cash register, ole dude from Down South who was helping wrap my plant for transplant, and the wonderful Ramona who is a magical, magical woman who has such a wealth of plant know-how and enthusiasm— I felt SO taken care of. In this city where so many things are transient, it’s nice to feel like that :’) Couldn’t recommend this place enough. Thanks, y’all!

2021-08-21Huge space set under the 6 train subway tracks in East Harlem - enormous selection of outdoor plants and a big enough selection of indoor plants for my plant apartment needs - they have pothos, orchids, cactus (and lots of others I don’t know the names of) I came away with a 3ft Monstera plant, a medium Monstera and a baby Monstera - I guess I’m just curious to see how they all do in my north facing but sunny apartment. I walked the half a mile home with no troubles - it wasn’t too heavy, thank the lord they didn’t water it too much otherwise it would have been a job for a taxi cab. The staff were helpful and friendly and signed me up for their plant club - not sure what that means but I’ll find out ;) they also have been offering weekend sales with 30% off…

2021-04-06The Urban Garden Center has an excellent variety of plants and planters. They also have whatever you require for your planting needs-- like hanging planter rope, air plant holders, terrariums, compost!, standing terra-cotta plant holders, etc-- the list goes on!They have appropriate price points for their plants too.Even if you just want to take a nice walk through nature ( under the train station) in the city and see some beautiful greenery-- stop by and enjoy!Oh and they have chickens!

2019-06-05Really nice place in the area. Actually one of the only places I know uptown you can buy quality plants and trees. And there is delivery. It’s a more get what you want, and they don’t exactly wait on you unless you have specific question. Still... Recommend it highly.

2022-03-12I’m a new plant mom!!! Lloyd and the team were so kind and helpful. They explained everything I needed to make my selections!! And I have my new babies names. I will definitely be back for more plants and accessories 🤩
