Van a in other cities:
Had the luck to visit them the last day in July before their vacation. This place is 10/10 for everything, the food is delicious and the staff has extremely friendly all night. We order lots of dishes and shared for the table and everything was amazing. Would definitely be coming back, enjoy the time off guys well deserved!
The food is probably a solid 4 but the service was a 1. The mochi dumplings and grilled cheese were good, get those. The shaking beef was tiny for its price. Stir fry pho was good but a bit salty. Most of the portions were ready small: $40 per person will not fill you up. The service was terrible though. We had reservations and they could t seat us until 10+ minutes later even though the restaurant wasnt busy. Food took over 30 minutes to arrive with some dishes arriving 1.5 hours after we ordered. The staff blamed it on the small kitchen. Even if its true, you shouldnt have restaurant that cant produce food fast enough to feed your guests.
Such a fantastic experience for this new location in the lower east side. I’ve never experienced five star or fancy like Vietnamese food but I have to say nearly everything I tried was a first experience from the norms of getting pho or bahn mi. Make sure to make a reservation. It’s a great place for an intimate date or catching up with a good friend.
Found this place on a recommendation from thrillist. Delicious meal, comfortable restaurant, and good service. We ordered four dishes based on our servers recommendation for our party of two. The meal was presented in an order from lightest to heaviest. It was also nicely paced with each dish arriving after a short break in between. We ordered: Julienned Green Papaya which was refreshing, light, and just a little spicy.Pho Short Rib Grilled Cheese was just as delicious as it sounds. The bread was perfectly toasted crispy. The short rib was delicious and the shot of pho broth on the side was excellent.Next up was the Stir-Fried Pho Noodles. Again these were delicious and were nicely paired with the greens and mushrooms that came with it.Last up was the Tamarind Glazed Pork Ribs. These were cooked perfectly and fell off the bone. The glaze was perfect and so was the rice it came with.Four delicious courses, two glasses of wine, and a cider all for just under $100 makes this a great NYC meal.
Finally some variety in Vietnamese food !8/10 amazingTruly one of the best restaurant I have been to in recent months! I only knew Vietnamese food through banh mi and pho and this was revelation. Forget about these! Everything here was so new and tasty. Do not miss the Banh Khot, I wish we had ordered it several order of them. The menu is supposed to be served family style and is organized by region and from traditional to modern. I recommend the Huê section the most. On top of this, the sleek and simple design makes you feel at home in this little peace heaven. Expect to spend about 2h there as the service is quite slow, but don’t worry, you’ll wish you could stay all night.More @le_foodreview
Last summer, we visited Chả Cá Lã Vọng in the Old Quarter of Hanoi 🇻🇳. Needless to say, we didnt think the 100+ year old marinated turmeric fish (lightly fried) recipe 📜 could be topped and elevated.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Thats until we went to Van Đa and had their Branzino version topped with a heap of dill and peanuts. You know a dish is great when the original and the progressive recipes can live side by side 🤝.-----The city of Huế owns the rights to some of our favorite 🇻🇳 dishes, and the bánh bột lọc sit amongst them. Each translucent shrimp and pork tapioca dumpling is loved ♥️ and hand packaged 🤲 in banana leaf, a presentation (𝖔𝖓𝖈𝖊 𝖚𝖕𝖔𝖓 𝖆 𝖙𝖎𝖒𝖊) made fit for emperors 👑. A tedious process no doubt, but if we could have anyone create these gems, it would be a child of Huế (ʜɪɴᴛ: ᴠᴀɴ ᴅᴀ 😉). Glad to finally see this in NYC!
We came in a company of 4 and ordered all possible options it of the tasting set menu, so it was a great chance to try them. My favorite were appetizers (especially steamed rice in a tiny ceramic plate) and salads (Papaya mango!!!). By the time we got to the main course, I was too full to give it a proper rating.Overall, great value for 50$ sets!
Seemed pretty hype given how popular the place was. We booked a table for 4.Unfortunately I think they are pretty understaffed so our food and drinks all came pretty slowly. This was okay though since the service was great. We did a la carte. In terms of the actual food quality, it was okay. Nothing really stood out and the portion sizes were small. Because the dishes each came out so slowly, we were never full. At the end we were still hungry and we were told we ordered enough food. The drinks were also pretty mediocre, despite the aesthetically pleasing looks. For the prices you are paying and knowing what Vietnamese food actually tastes like (please try eating some outside of nyc), we were a bit disappointed. They call themselves modern Vietnamese but none of the dishes we had really seemed like a modern take except skimping out on portion sizes.
For those who think this is authentic Vietnamese food, I feel sorry for you. Food quality was average (but original to be fair), portion was laughably small, the place was very tiny, and service was below average (the waitress didn’t know we placed an order already 25 mins in). There’s really nothing “fine” about it considering it’s supposed to be “fine dinning”.
I was excited about this place. I had a good meal and service was very nice, but the food wasnt memorable and Im not planning to return to sample more of the menu. I took the dumpling menu tour. It started great, the dumplings were like nothing Ive had before and the high note of the meal. The rib cheese sandwich tasted like a cheeseburger, the flavors all melted with each other, while I prefer distinct flavors. Last was the stoked meat. The marinade was too salty, the meat a bit tough, and the leaf vegetables too sour. The top water tasted dusty, a first for me in a NYC restaurant. To me, service and atmosphere come second to the food. Good Vietnamese food is fortunately getting easier to come by in NYC, and Ive had better for less.
Really pretentious, from all their advertising about Michelin, I thought they have a Michelin star.Guess what they do not.Food is mediocre at best, very small dishes, they have the Hutzpa to suggest a tasting menu for $33 but then you see the small prints that it’s actually only for 2 people, so you pay $66 for 4-5 small plates.Service was good, but the food was not.Calling a coconut milk with tapioca- tapioca pudding does not qualify as a desert.Definitely not going back there.
Van Da is my new favorite restaurant in NYC right now. I went here for a friends birthday dinner with a prefixed menu of $38/ person with plenty of food to go around - I was very full before the full menu even came out. The food was incredible. I’m leaving this at five stars because of the quality and taste of the food. Our server was a bit curt and rude (I showed up late and was told by another guest that it may have been because there were a lot of demands and requests made prior to my arrival that could have annoyed him), nonetheless, treat every guest as if it’s their first time and with the most respect! He got better as the evening went on but I didn’t love his attitude towards me when I initially walked in. HIGHLY recommend their food.
The food is indeed good (though average/nothing special for the neighborhood), however the service is much to be desired, you’d think the staff is instead paying you a tip. It’s unfortunate since I was hoping this would be a great add to the neighborhood. Also, don’t be surprised if you have to wait 30+ mins despite having a reservation 👎🏼👎🏼
Perfect dinner evening.Cocktails were original and well prepared. We shared few appetizers and noodles. Everything was delicious, especially the crispy mochi dumplings.Service was perfect, the different plates were brought with good tempo so we could enjoy each of them fully.
The food was good. The dumplings only come with 2 or 3 pieces. $10 is pretty pricey for 2 dumplings. The rib entree was a good size for sharing though. The meat was tender and the garlic rice under it really good. The shrimps do come with the head and arms still attached. It was a lot of work. It reminded me of a seafood boil I went to the night before. Not bad for a fancy night out but not something to do every week.
Authentic, scrumptious Vietnamese. Went with friends last night, ordered lots of dishes, every single one was so inspired, we wanted to order two more. Cocktails were awesome too. Atmosphere is shadowy and mellow; sound level isnt crazy. Best of all: Price is super reasonable. Cant wait to go back!
Definitely disappointed with this spot. Slow service and tiny portions of overpriced, mostly flavorless food (we did the sampler menu) left us hungry and having to stop at a deli on the way home. The pho grilled cheese was pretty average and hilariously small (think one bite per person). In my opinion, skip it.
We had a really joyful time tasting Vanda’s set menu. A great amount of good quality food; even the drinks were tasty. All the staff members are super nice, and promptly helping us when we needed! Gary’s explanation of the menu was passionate and easy to understand as well. A cozy restaurant; we would definitely recommend it to anyone who loves real, nice Vietnamese cuisine! The icing on the cake was the surprise BD dessert we got after our meal.
Good food, great cocktail and great vibes for having fun with you friends. However, thats about it.The service was ok, but the hospitality is terrible. That destroyed everything good I mentioned earlier. We started getting the seat at 9pm for the party of 7 thought we reserve the table at 8:30pm.We finished dishes quite fast and didnt order anything at the closing period. We started packing and waiting for Uber. One of the hosts coming down and rushing us to wrap things up. This is so rude.
If youve been to your standard, good Vietnamese restaurant, you kind of know what youre going to get. But not this place - Ive never seen many of these dishes at any other restaurant AND it was really, really delicious! Kudos to the chef for putting together a memorable and unique menu! Already trying to figure out when I can get back there....
So, I’m not certain this “review” ought to hold as much weight as others but I’m writing in response to my brief experience yesterday. It was pouring outside and my wife and I stood outside the restaurant wondering if we were at the correct location. The host opened the door for us and welcomed us inside. We didn’t have a reservation but the host offered a table that was available for one hour before a reservation. He was fairly confident that some covers would cancel but wanted to play it safe. Looking for something more leisurely, and not wanting to add pressure for our lack of planning, my wife and I decided we’d come back instead, and to make a reservation next time.I’m writing this review because I am certain I will return here to dine. It’s hard to find a genuinely welcoming dining establishment in this city but the host won me over with his persistence, really making me feel like he was on our side. I’m excited to taste the food. See y’all soon.
The food is so good and original, we enjoyed the dumplings and the noodle so much, you can get wrong. But! The service was the worst I had in a while. It barely exist actually. And when the waitress did come to us, she was just useless. Couldnt even explain about the food or drinks. Too bad
Not the greatest nor something you cannot get anywhere else to be honest as we were told when being handed the menu. Upon arrival the host seemed to be annoyed a bit at the fact that we were slightly 5 minutes late because he treated the time and also looked at his watch...as if we didnt realize we were late. Nonetheless, onward with the food! Presentation was nice for upscale Vietnamese cuisine unlike traditional that is. I had these rice cakes on a petri dish which again was told dishes here cannot be found anywhere in NY or probably US he said but indeed Ive had sheet tray full of them before elsewhere and they were delicious. I had the chicken salad which was basically boiled chicken and shredded then tossed in with the salad which was mostly mint and onions and fennel, it was bland and not an acquiring taste, packed it to go in the middle of my meal. My friend however got what traditional Vietnamese would call it beef cubes. I had a piece from her plate and the meat was rare inside as in bright red like taretare. I expressed my concern about that and when the server returned he said its actually meant to be medium rare anything that has the word rare in it especially meat the customers are usually made aware of it prior to placing the order. However, he then proceeded to say after taking the dish back to the kitchen with my piece of raw meat he came back and said i just tempd your piece of meat and it tells me its medium rare Im not quite sure how that can possibly be possible if it had sat on the table for over 1 hr yet it is able to give you a read on the thermometer as a medium rare doneness for meat...if they were just to tell me its only seared on the outside and inside is meant to be a bit on the rare side and thats how it is served I wouldve been like okay but lesson learned i hope, never underestimate your diners and their ability to distinct how food is served or should be served! By the way we didnt like it overall and would not return so not recommended 🤷♀️

2022-06-02Expect to order about two dishes per person at least since the portions are smaller. We ordered everything the waiter recommend and it was excellent! The grilled cheese with pho meat and broth was a favorite. So was the duck dish! As for cocktails, I ordered the ho Chi Smokey and I loved it.

2022-06-17This place does everything right except for it’s food. The atmosphere and space is extremely cozy and cute, but the food just did not deliver. The only thing I enjoyed was the pho short rib grilled cheese. However, the mochi dumplings were dry, and the rest of the dishes the stir fried pho noodles and the shaking beef were extremely salty. This says a lot for someone who enjoys food on the saltier side. On top of that, the serving size is incredibly small and not worth the price.

2021-10-23Elevated Vietnamese cuisine! Great to have a restaurant showcasing the diversity of Vietnamese cuisine. Come to get items that you wont normally find elsewhere in NYC.Food, service and ambience is on point! The pre-fix menu is easy, come with more people so you’ll get to try more items. Family style! It is on a pricier side but the quality of food and service makes up for it. Must try!

2022-04-03As a Cali native its pretty challenging to find good Vietnamese places in NYC. They food was good, most dishes are on the smaller size and good to share. Got the banh beo, grilled cheese with the pho broth dip, and stir fried pho. All were good. The highlight is their hot sauce, just spicy enough. The cocktails were on the sweeter side, but delicious (ho chi smokey and hue of the dragon).

2022-01-09Extremely love the love on my first try!I always want to go there for few time, but I could not make it until now and it’s really worth it and I love it. I definitely will go back again to try different dishes. I had the duck with noodles, it was perfect the way I would enjoy it. My friend had the fish with coconut rice and he love it as well. The desert was a plus. The restaurant atmosphere was very pleasant and the service was friendly. Overall we enjoyed our first dinner there. Also don’t forget the cocktails 🍹 😍😗

2021-12-31Great food and amazing experience! You must try all the Bánh. They are light but so flavorful. Especially Bánh Khot, wonderful cake with herbs and a touch of coconut milk. You gotta bath them all well in the house sauce! I ended my meal with Chè. What a sweet treat! I’m Viet and proud to taste my food like this. Totally recommend to my friends!

2022-03-21Great ambiance & food & drinks & service! Perfect spot for dinner date. If only the portion of food was larger - it was a bite size for a grown man like me!

2021-11-14I’m extra critical in this review since I’m Vietnamese, so don’t take this the wrong way when I say the dishes here are not authentic at all. All the dishes we tried were too ‘Americanized’ for my taste, catering to the demographic in East Village. If you’re looking for food that closely reflects the rich culture and flavor of Vietnam, you won’t find it here. With that said, the banh beo was my favorite dish, but subpar to the average quality I’ve tried in the West Coast. If you’re Viet and craving banh beo, I guess you could come here and give it a try. As for dessert, the che was mediocre and extremely limited in portion… like come on no proper Vietnamese shop serves that little che.Honestly, if you’re Viet and think this is authentic, you haven’t tried real Vietnamese food.

2021-07-17Went there for a date night dinner. We both enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. The restaurant is small but they do a good job with maximizing the space while making every table feel spacious. We ordered the banh beo (vietnamese dumplings) & eggplant salad to start. Both were phenomenal, although the eggplant salad was more of a delicious vermicelli noodle salad with a few slices of eggplant. They sauced both items well. For the entree, we got the Short Rib Grilled Cheese with a shot of pho (we later asked for more pho b/c it was so good). They can make a no-cheese version if you ask! This was the star of the meal. We also got the stir fried pad thai and glazed pork ribs. We could have done without the paid thai but the pork ribs are a must have.Cocktails were good too.

2022-04-10My fellow diner and I did not have a good experience at this restaurant. We arrived on time and were shown to a table. After a few minutes they realized we were supposed to be at a different table, outside, which was still occupied. “Girls settled in for a good night out,” said a waiter sympathetically. So we were seated at a bar to wait for a table. Eventually they seated us (again: third time) and took our order. Our own chances of having a good night out were to be nil, however. Our food service was rushed, and then, when we’d been at this table for an hour at most, we were hustled into paying and leaving. There are so many ways the restaurant could have handled this better! Leaving us at the first table; offering complimentary drinks or dessert; allowing us the full quota of dining time instead of subtracting the time they’d taken to get us to our eventual table — any of these would have resulted in an enjoyable evening, because the food is really quite nice. As it is we would definitely not recommend this restaurant.
