Van Leeuwen Ice Cream in other cities:
I asked for 2 scoops of vegan ice cream and was left with less than my friend who got one scoop. Went back in to ask the workers and was told that my smaller portion was due to the vegan ice cream being crumbly and having a sugar cone. Super disappointed that I was ripped off as I paid 9 dollars for less than a full scoop of ice cream. Other locations did not do this. Need to get friendlier, more accommodating staff.
It’s so great having a Van Leeuwen in the neighborhood! I’m a fan of the classic flavors and hot fudge, but the vegan flavors are also incredibly special - among the best I’ve had anywhere. Try the vegan chocolate for something sinfully indulgent, or the classic Pistachio, Strawberry, Earl Grey, or Honeycomb.
When is first opened a couple years ago I used to laugh. There were lines around the block. Eventually I got around to eating their ice cream and now I know why they had lines. Absolutely fantastic selection everything from vegan to real ice cream and sometimes the vegan ice creams taste even better than the real stuff. Nice staff and fast service.
Every time I am in the Upper East, I look forward to evening visits to Van Leeuwen. I am vegan, so I have only had their vegan ice creams, which are shockingly rich and creamy. It is definitely the best, most velvety artisanal vegan ice cream I have had to date, but not all the flavors I have tried have knocked my socks off.On my most recent visit I ordered a cookie crumble strawberry jam flavor, which sounded incredibly and summery in theory, but in reality lacked the buttery cookie and zingy strawberry flavors I expected. It had more sweet cream flavor than anything else. So maybe stick to some of the most robust flavors, particularly ones that include chocolate or salt. All in all, they put out an excellent and truly unique product that is essential to the NYC vegan foodie and visitor alike.
Ordered a waffle cone with three scoops. Came in a cup. I mentioned that wasn’t what I ordered. The guy who took the order confirmed. The woman fulfilling the order said “well it’s says cup” and just walked away. Rather than make the rest of the people behind me keep waiting, I just said fine, whatever. After thinking it over, I decided to return the ice cream and get a refund. How hard would it have been to just fix the mistake that your staff, of their own admission, made? No fancy ice cream flavor can cover up the taste of terrible/rude customer service. And after asking for a refund, and being told the money was refunded to my card, I checked, and it actually still hasn’t been, which means they lied to my face, or refunded a different customer. I’ll be happy to never step foot in one of your stores again. That lesson was apparently well worth the $13.
The ice cream tasted a bit like flavored ice chips, and they needed a few more people behind the counter to make the service run faster - but plan to return to keep trying flavors to see if it was just the espresso flavor that didn’t quite do it for me, or if maybe I just don’t love Van Leeuwen ice cream.
I love the ice cream here. My main issue was with the selling of the Mac and Cheese ice cream. I was in line at the store right at 11am when it was supposed to be available. The worker came out and said they hadnt received their delivery yet. I waited until after 12:30pm and just couldnt wait any longer. If you are gonna offer something for sale at a specific time, especially a limited time item, then you should have it in stock as promised. Waiting over an hour and a half and still having no idea when the item will arrive is unacceptable.
Van Leeuwen has been on my To Visit list for quite some time and I finally made it there for a visit the other night. It was well worth it. There is very limited seating inside (along the left side of the shop), with a small, two person bench out front. The shop is well staffed with about 5 members at the counter. The selection was pretty good for such a small location. I had the chocolate fudge brownie in a small cup and it was honestly, some of the best ice cream Ive ever eaten. It was very fluffy and light. It tasted really fresh and when I was done, I didnt have that awful, heavy feeling in my stomach. They offer cups, cones and even shakes. If you havent visited, I suggest you do.
Something is up with the freezers at the UES store. Love this ice cream, but lately everything I get is soft and melted--falling off the cone and dripping as soon as I leave the store. This was never a problem, but its happening every time now. PLEASE FIX THIS PROBLEM!
Van Leeuwen has a wide enough variety of ice cream for vegans and non-vegans alike. You can get traditional cones, cups, sundaes, and even milkshakes made vegan which is great. The ice cream tastes great. They make it with a mix of coconut, oat, and almond milks. It does give a hint of coconut flavour to all the vegan flavours. So, if you dont like coconut, maybe just be aware of that going in. Otherwise, definitely give them a try.
They were at a private event outside my work place on Franklin Street in lower Manhattan. They were so kind to give me a nice sample of their ice cream. It was so delicious and it was like the guy knew what flavor I would love the most. It tasted like strawberry cheesecake! My favorite dessert has been made into the best tasting ice cream ever! Then he told me the ice cream was Vegan! I couldnt believe it! It was so delicious!
I am absolutely Addicted. Little did the person who was giving out samples in fairway about 2 years know what she was doing to me. The vegan chocolate made with cashew milk is to absolutely to melt and have an orgasm over. It is absolutely crazy delicious with several layers of deliciousness slightly different and each layer. It should come with a label though that you will get addicted. I do think the vegan chocolate is actually much better believe it or not than the regular.
I was originally handed a wobbly double scoop cone with ice cream falling off which proceeded to land on my chest in front of the cashier who was so amazing! She immediately offered a whole new ice cream, took the bad one, handed me napkins, and didn’t charge me. Excellent customer service to go along with excellent ice cream!
My mother and I have been such a fan of this ice cream shops fun flavors and friendly staff that we pretty much made it a routine to come here every weekend after a hot stroll. This weekend my mother unfortunately lost her credit card and didnt realize until the following morning while switching bags. She returned to this shop as soon as it re-opened (noon) as this was the last place she had used her card. The treatment was a total 180 from what were used to. The woman working the front met her with a total dismissive attitude, telling her that she wasnt here the day before and doesnt know anything--before my mother could even finish her sentence. It was like pulling teeth to even speak to the manager (who wasnt there)--the woman texted her, who replied that they will have to look through security cameras. Already extremely strange. Never have we had to wait for a store to look through security cameras just to verify that we lost something there--at most, management might ask about the color or, in the instance of a credit card, the name on it. I have also worked retail before and that has never been protocol. When my mother finally got a ahold of the manager directly, she asked her a bunch of irrelevant questions as if to villify and blame her for the situation--Why didnt you return yesterday if that was when you lost it? How many scoops of ice cream did you have? etc. In the meantime, the woman at the front treated other customers coming in with a completely different, positive attitude. The fact that my mother is black with an accent and was dressed more casually (sportswear) than we usually attend this shop definitely must have played a role. An establishment should never gaslight, villify or dismiss the customer for a situation that they themselves dont want to be in. And with the state of the country right now, youd think theyd do better. I think its safe to say that theyve lost our business.
This place accepts credit cards only. We were touring the city and google had great ratings for this place. We took a cab all the way to this ice cream place only to find out they did not accept cash!!!! Do not go here if you don’t have cash! The management she have it posted on their website!! Am very disappointed!!!!!
Van Leeuwen ice cream is way too rich and buttery for me. It’s never going to be my first choice in ice cream. Beyond that, the staff here is too young and disorganized and distracted by socializing with each other to run a storefront business smoothly on a busy night.
Finally quality vegan milkshakes! The tastes are amazing and we were very well received and informed :)The prices are high (but I want to say like everything in NY 😅) but the quality is there!I had an almond milk shake and churros ice cream, it was delicious! Small flat I dont like cinnamon and I had forgotten that here they put it almost everywhere... 😅But I recommend for vegans who want a little dessert / snack :)

2021-10-07Oh my the ice cream here is just delicious! I absolutely love how thick, creamy, and rich the desserts are. I ordered the Earl Grey flavored ice cream and honestly wasnt expecting it to taste so Earl Grey-y! It had a nice punch of flavor that wasnt just vanilla+more (if you know what I mean). My only complaint is that they actually ran out of a few popular flavors by the time I arrived in the late afternoon (though of course everything is good anyway)

2021-10-02Amazing ice cream with large number of options including vegan ones and toppings, or sundaes to choose from, all at decent prices as you would come to expect from Van Leeuwen. They also have coffee.I had the pumpkin cheesecake and chocolate brownie ones and they were both amazing. Texture, sweetness and flavor were all near perfect. The chocolate brownie one is my favorite flavor at Van Leeuwen as they have a really good ratio of ice cream to brownie and brownies dont feel like hard.

2021-10-05I had the vegan cashew milk, mint chocolate ice cream. They reproduced the texture of ice cream well, and nothing was missing in the mint chocolate flavour, especially with the generous helping of crunchy dark chocolate bits. I think the prices are high for a scoop (why not buy a pint at this point?).

2022-07-05The customer service was absolutely terrible. The fat women with the orange hair serving me seemed to have such an attitude. I dont know how anyone can deal with such treatment. For those reading this review, dont come to this ice cream place if you want fast quality service as well as decent respect, instead go to the gelato place down the block for a much better experience.

2022-06-06First the ice cream is scrumptious-has been since the truck in Union Square years ago. Secondly the toppings are a huge disappointment. Like Im in the old Soviet Union. Thirdly, the place was FILTHY with no one apparently taking the downtime from a Sat eve crush to wipe tables or clean a floor. But the constant please close the door was evident That leads to a 1-2 star rating for the staff: some smiles (hell- an unenviable job) but the surliness of the cashier was beyond unacceptable. I guess UESers accept this type of treatment and are willing to pay for it. Not my wife nor I Well just buy the ice cream itself and the cones and enjoy it at home.

2022-07-16Although I’ve enjoyed Van Leeuwen’s in the past, my last experience was dangerous enough where I felt compelled to write this review.Last time I visited here (in March of this year) I ordered an oat-milk based ice cream, since I’m lactose intolerant and allergic to cashews and walnuts. I very intentionally said the name of the flavor (oat milk brown sugar chunk) while ordering. The cashier appeared to be struggling to find it on the list/toast tab selection of flavors and seemed to sort of haphazardly select an option after 30 seconds or so. I was a bit unsettled by that, but figured I should trust the process. The item I got tasted much more like peanut butter (fortunately a nut I am not allergic to) and I figured I was probably just tasting something funny on my end. A couple minutes later, though, I started getting the itchy & throat-swelling sensation I do when I eat nuts I’m not supposed to. I looked at the flavor list online and realized I had probably been served the vegan peanut butter brownie honeycomb (they look pretty similar). Normally not a big deal, but that flavor is made with cashew milk. Fortunately my allergy does not cause anaphylactic shock and I quickly recognized the mistake and took 3 Benadryl.Upon telling this story to a friend recently, I realized just how not-cool that was and how it would’ve been very bad for someone with a more severe allergy. I really like this place (very yummy oat milk flavors, normally) and their dietary options, but this was not a great experience and definitely should be avoided diligently in the future.
