**Note ** this review is before Blue Cross changed hands. Its not the same now.** I have brought our family pets to Blue Cross for decades. Dr. Brown is the best! I have a rescued senior yellow lab who actually likes to go to the Vet because they are so nice to him there! Dr. Brown saved his life when I was sure that was it and worked with me on other things to make my old dog comfortable within budget. They have seen me happy with my animals in for routine visits and they have seen me as a sobbing mess when I have lost an animal and they have always treated me very well and with respect. They have been so good to my animals too that I figured it is about time I write a review.
We have been to a number of local vets in the area before landing at Blue Cross Animal Hospital and all I can say is I wish we went there sooner. We have 3 dogs who are much loved so having a positive relationship with a vet is very important to us. The office staff and the vets are all so friendly, knowledgeable and kind. They are efficient while still giving very personalized service at each interaction. One of our dogs was recently injured and when I called the office I had to also explain my husband lost his job to COVID 19 and I was worried about the funds. They responded that they were there to help in any way and helped us with an emergency fund. That is true compassion. They saw our dog, all while maintaining social distancing, and gave her the help she needed. I cannot recommend this vet clinic highly enough!
Blue Cross Animal Hospital is a wonderful Veterinary office. I’ve been coming here for almost 15 years. We came when I got my first puppy and Dr. Brown was recommended by a friend. Over the years we have seen multiple vets at this office and they have all been amazing. The office staff is beyond friendly and always remember you and your animals. I now have two dogs and a cat and every emergency, big or small, (even when my lab ate about 30 paintballs at the park) they handle with promptness and professionalism. If I could give them a million stars I would. Absolutely love this Vet, they’re like family.
I have trusted Blue Cross Animal Hospital with my precious fur babies over the past dozen years or so! The Doctors and staff are very caring, friendly, knowledgeable and professional! We’ve been through some rough times, as well as happy times together! Love them! Highly recommended!!
Having been using BCAC for all of my animal care for the past 20 plus years, I can excitedly endorse them. I have had professional and excellent animal care through the good time check-ups and treatments. They are compassionate and truly empathetic during the loss of a pet as well. These folks care for the animals as if they were their own.The staff is the best there is. Every doctor, technician, and receptionist are the best of the best. My sincere appreciation to you all for the great care for over the years. I look forward to many more.
The staff and the care provided is top notch. They were very compassionate to our animals. Our only con would be the lack of transparency in cost. By the end of the exam we were always presented with a laundry list of services they performed or were pushing to perform. Some of the services were absolutely unnecessary and only made the bill skyrocket. Weve switched to new vets due to the overall lack of communication.
Great vet, these guys are so caring and very thorough, they really do care about you and your fur babies. There prices are not bad. You can go on line and get a coupon for a free vet visit for up to two animals dogs or cats. For the Best care for your fur babies this by far is the best place to get excellent care.
My grandparents and I have taken our dogs here for years. Even though I have relocated to downtown Buffalo I will continue to drive to Amherst to bring my dog here and will continue to go here in the future. The staff are so kind & friendly. From the receptionists to the vets and techs I know my dog is in good hands. They are so knowledgeable and always are able to see us for sick visits right away. Thank you blue cross team for being so kind and compassionate to animals!!!!
They are amazing people!!! Extremely friendly, extremely knowledgeable and just overall good people. You can tell that they love pets and they treat your pet as of it is your own. I was looking for a new vet and this location was recommended to me by my neighbor. I cannot thank them enough! They discuss prices and treatment options without making you feel pressured into doing something that you are not comfortable with. I am extremely happy that this location was recommended to me and I know that they will always do what they can to help my pet and make sure that he is healthy.
Our lab has been going to Blue Cross Animal Hospital ever since he was a puppy. The entire staff is so pleasant to speak to over the phone, and even more lovely in person. The system they have in place during Covid-19 is fantastic. We felt he was in great hands even though we couldnt go inside. After his appointment, Dr. Hillegas gave us a call to go over everything and she. was. incredible. I just cant speak highly enough of our experience during this difficult time.
If you are looking for a vet to build a relationship with this is not the place. In the past we have had great luck here but in the last 2 years it could not be any more clear that you are just a number and nobody here truly cares anymore. This is the kind of place you can walk into 3 times in the same week and everytime you start from square one as if they have never seen you before.
One of the best vets in Buffalo. Unfortunately I moved out of Amherst, but my cats were treated so well. I highly recommend them to anyone. The staff and doctors are amazing. They spend time with you and answer all your questions. You can tell everyone there loves animals and will do everything to help them. This office is the best choice!
We have taken our pets here over the past 25 years. They are wonderful. The staff is friendly and helpful and the Drs. are knowledgeable and compassionate. It doesnt matter what service you need, they do everything to the best of their ability. They cried with us when our dogs had to be put to sleep and sent us handwritten sympathy cards. They are the best.
I wouldnt go anywhere else with my fur baby ❤️ The vets and staff at VCA Blue Cross Animal Hospital are simply the best! Youre not just another client to them, youre family. Dr. Funk, Dr. McCormic, Olivia, Shannon and all the rest do everything to make your fur babies happy, healthy and loved. 💯
The staff at Blue Cross are always caring and competent. Upon walking in, I am greeted by friendly receptionists who swoon over my pooch. The doctors have great communication skills and take the time to explain physical exam findings and why they are making certain recommendations. Also, I am pleased to hear that the staff has undergone extra steps to become a cat friendly hospital. My cat loves the soothing classical music, the soft mats, and the feliway plug ins. Ive never seen her so relaxed at the vet! These people are soft-hearted humans. Go here!
This vet office started out very nice. Gave my daughters dog a cookie , said she is a very sweet girl. Well before they would examine her they slapped on a muzzle. This dog has NEVER been muzzled before. There has NEVER been a reason to. I have been a dog groomer for 25 years. Never would I do That. Even dogs that are uncertain I wont. Not unless there is a good reason. That is such a bad practice. You will never gain a dogs trust doing that. WE WILL NEVER GO BACK THERE! They are also very pricey. I dont recommend them. Especially if you have a sensitive dog
I have been going to the Blue Cross Animal Hospital for years for my dogs and cats. Any time I have brought them in, I have always felt that my pets were in the best of hands. The bed side manner, willingness to help, professionalism, and sheer dedication of the doctos and staff never ceases to amaze me. I highly recommend them for any of your pet care needs,
Awesome place to take your pet. The staff is very friendly, and it is obvious that they all love animals. I would recommend to anyone, if you are looking for a good vet to take your pet to this is the place! Very competitive prices and gave us some free toys and dog food!
Yesterday, was a very hard day for me. I had to let my Ronnie go, let him go to join the others over the rainbow bridge. It was a very difficult decision for me to make. He is my little man, and will forever be my little man. I miss him already and I feel a lot of pain now that he’s gone. But, I would like to share with everyone, the love and concern I received from the people at the Blue Cross Small Animal Hospital (Amherst, NY) The doctor, who helped us, I cannot remember her name. But, she was the most wonderful person I have ever met. (Long Blonde hair). Love, compassion, patience and understanding. I did not make her job easy yesterday, but she helped me. I want everyone to know what a wonderful person she is, and the woman at the front desk, was also, so very understanding. Thank you everyone for your help yesterday. I will forever use this veterinarian for all of my pet needs. For those reading this, you should use them too. Thank you again..
Took my puppy Khoie here (8/14/15) after she experience a terrible seizure. The staff super friendly and helpful when I called to bring her here for the first time(which I was shock cause the Vet that I take my other dogs to wasnt able to get her in until next week). Dr. Brown is the best.. he put my family at ease with our concerns regarding our little baby. He didnt do like most vets do which is have you go thru all those expensive tests and medicine that has no need for her condition. I had such a good feeling and experience there that now my other two dogs will be going there...I will suggest this place to all my pet lovers...plus the price was reasonable(bonus) in book...
From regular check ups to mild injuries and illnesses, Blue Cross Animal Hospital has helped my family care for our furry friends for over a decade. The receptionists, technicians, and veterinarians have been wonderful. Even more so during times when you dont want to be there because you need to say goodbye to a member of the family, BCAH made a heartbreaking time bearable. Thank you.
Dr.Hillegas is great. She is ultra intelligent, has compassion and a truly fantastic Vet. We have been taking our kids to Blue Cross for years, and found the entire staff to be terrific, under sometimes crisis situations. Many thanks to Dr. Brown and his truly competent ,caring staff.!!Larry & Laurie Bart..and Sammy the Wonder dog...
Took me a few weeks to write this review because my cat passed away. I came here to have my cat looked at. They told me he has cancer 😢 while I was in the room crying a staff member comes in with the bill. I understand I have to pay but give me a little bit!! I paid the bill and went back to my old Vet. Ill never come back here again! Seems like more of a dog vet. I miss my cat 😢
I went there with a friend whose dog was sick. They were able to get an emergency appointment, it was rather costly. The vet came in with a technician and to the quick evaluation of the dog. They prescribed antibiotics as well as a prescription wet food. However they did not run any blood work or have any stool sample. They were just going based off of what we told them and really didnt have any factual evidence the dog has been feeling a little bit better, but symptoms are still problematic.
We cannot say enough positive words about the kind staff and knowledgeable doctors at this office. We bring our two dogs and cats here and they always fix them right up. Dr. Gorbacki is excellent. He very quickly diagnosed a life threatening blockage in our year old cat and helped us make the decisons to save its little life while being patient and understanding (we were in tears and he was very kind). The staff genuinely care about their clients, both animals and people. They always call after emergency visits to see how our pets are doing on treatment. Please, if you take your pet here consider donating a few bucks to their emergency animal care fund, which is used to help people with unexpected costs of treatment. It can save a pets life!
We have been customers of Blue Cross for our pets for over 20 years. The staff and vets have been great with all of our pets. When we moved out of state, they helped us to find a vet in our new area that could treat our cat with hypothyroidism, so her care wouldnt be interrupted. When we moved back and needed a vet again for our newest family member, we returned back to Blue Cross. We were pleasantly surprised that the bill wasnt as much as we thought it would be. We know what our vet in Indiana would have charged, and the bill Blue Cross charged us was almost half of that. Those that are commenting here about the cost of pet meds obviously didnt know they could ask for a script and fill it elsewhere if they thought the cost was excessive.
If I could give less than 1 star I would. When I questioned an additional surgical procedure I was being asked to sign off on when dropping my puppy for neutering, I was told my husband requested it. That was a lie. They drained my cats lungs saying there was fluid on them before discussing options with me or asking permission. Then sent us home where the cat died overnight what seemed an agonizing death. I tried to seek assistance for a bunny suffering a broken leg, they refused to see him or refer us to someone that might help. The vet down the street treated him and pointed us to a rehabilition center that reintroduced him to the wild after healing. My dog needed some quick medical assistance and my new vet was on the other side of town. (I switched after the above mentioned issues) Blue Cross had me fax over his rabies certificate, then refused to treat him because they were not the ones that administered his last annual check up citing it as a violation of NYS law to see him. When questioned they could not cite specifically which law this was. It was this last exchange that prompted this review. Overall I found the doctors to be mostly proficient but the nurses and desk staff are atrocious. If someone in charge reads this- please put some time into training your staff.
Dr. David Gerzak provided exceptional care for our yellow lab, Bodhi. His genuine, caring demeanor, as well as his great ability to share information that was easy to understand was truly appreciated. We couldn’t have had a more competent and compassionate individual help us through such a challenging time.
Years ago I took an elder cat here to get a check up and to see why he was not feeling well. After x-rays they had determined that he might have a massive tumor in his lower intestine. A few days later after they freaked me out they took another X-ray and it was gone. One might think that it was a miracle, but in reality just turned out to be him storing up his fecal matter before he pooped it out. During his check-up they failed to notice one other thing that a week later I noticed that his eye looked funny and when I took them in they could not diagnose what was going on with his eye. So I ended up taking him to a different doctor who determined that a tumor was growing inside of his eye that was causing pressures within and that he was in danger of having his eye burst.$1,600 later I took home my one-eyed Kitty after taking him to an eye specialist. The fact that these veterinarians cant distinguish poop from a tumor or a tumor growing within an animals eye is quite discerning. I cannot recommend anyone bringing their beloved pet to this place for even anything as routine as a check up!
We would like to thank the Blue Cross Animal Hospital at 3921 Main st in Amherst for the professional help , respect, dignity and care , that they extended to our family for the loss of our dog Happy. Dr McCormic and Dr Brown and the extending staff where very professional and caring to our needs and our family thanks them so very much and we highly recomend them to any pet owners that may be in need of their services.
A friends cat had mouth ulcers. Blue Cross performed unnecessaryx-rays, held the cat for 3 days, force fed the poor thing when all it needed was doxycycline. They soaked her for almost $2000. I also had a bad experience with them. I would not recommend this veterinary clinic to anyone. They are money grubbers.
Horrible place. My dog was dizzy and fell, they diagnosed to with vestivular illness. When she wasnt getting better, I took her back. Same diagnosis. When she was shivering and panting, i called for another appt. No, said she didnt need one. Called again for pain, on a Friday afternoon, vet did not return any calls, at least 3x Saturday, took my dog out and when she came in was paralyzed in her hind legs, tongue and gums were blue and she was in obvious distress. Rushed her in to emergengy clinic where they put her to sleep. I called Monday, said she died, got not so much as as Im sorrry, when i requested her records, two pages were missing and they refused to give them to me. Do not go here.
I wish I cpuld give 0 stars. My older cat was very sick so I took him here while they did an xray. Dr said it was a mass and recommended I put him down. I took him home to sat goodbye to the kids and wait for my husband to get home from work. Took him back in where they prepped him - shaved his arm where the needle would go. My husband asked to look at the xray (hes not a dr...guess it was a gut feeling). The radiologist report said he was constipated. The Dr couldnt believe it. They kept him overnight and did an enema. That was a couple of years ago and hes still alive now! I was beyond furious. They didnt wait for the radiology report before diagnosing. DO NOT GO HERE!
Classic bait and switch technique. They rope you in with a free exam but then money grab at every opportunity.Today, I became aware that fish oil pills can cost $50. FISH OIL PILLS! The same pills at Walmart are $10.55... actually sorry, the pills at Walmart don’t have a pretty picture of a dog on the bottle.Ridiculous.
Wrong diagnose. ..wrong info...delayed my little girl from getting the proper treatment ...for a week waiting on them.. Were supposed to call me never did I had to make the phone calls... Very disorganized one person didnt know what the other was doing its been almost a year and Im still upset about it thats why Im writing this review
We said goodbye to our beloved Wheaton Terrier Finnegan almost 2 weeks ago. He was 15 years and 3 months. Everyone at Blue Cross was so kind and understanding. It was a very difficult decision for us, but it was the right one for him. Thank you for all the wonderful care over the years. He saw just about every vet and tech at some point or other and always got the best care.Thank you!Heather and Tom Appenheimer

2022-08-06As someone who’s family has used Blue Cross for close to 30 years, this vet has completely declined in service and care for animals. I was always happy and referred other pet owners to them. This has drastically changed over the years. Ever since Dr. Brown retired, this place has changed into a corporate, cold environment that puts profits over the well being of animals and their care. You can no longer bring your sick animals here for same day appointments, instead they refer you to emergency vets, that are completely unaffordable, and do not know your dogs history! What is the point of having a vet if you can’t receive care when your pet is sick? I called begging them to see my sick dog and they refused her care, after almost 9 years of her being in their practice. This is a new way of doing business, we could always get same day appointments before. Dr Brown would have never treated patients this way. I will be leaving this practice immediately. Consider taking your dog to a smaller non- corporate vet, where they care about your animal!

2022-04-26Great vet with friendly staff. When no vet could get me in for an appointment not even my own vet, they were able to get me in right away to help my Pug puppy. Im so thankful for them 💖🐾

2020-05-29We took our puppy Petey for his first checkup, and the staff could not have been more professional or friendly. We were a little concerned about the visit with COVID measures still at stage 1, the team at Blue Cross it handling things phenomenally and we were immediately put at ease. Petey was comfortable and well cared for, this is going to be his permanent vet. For extra peace of mind it is good to know they have an emergency clinic as well.

2019-11-08I have been going there for 14 years. I have three pets. Every vet is good, helpful and offers me various alternatives within my budget.Dr Hillegas is especially helpful with my kitty who has Feline Herpes. She was dogged ( pardon the pun) in striving to find an alternative treatment for Francis the cat do he could breathe. She would not quit until we figured out how to help him. I love the staff. Shannon and Olivia and Sam and Desiree. So good natured and kind and joyful.

2021-12-21I’ve been taking my dog to the VCA for about one year after switching from a different vet and have had nothing but great experiences. Everyone on the team is always knowledgeable, professional, and friendly. They always give great guidance and are able to provide pricing that is extremely affordable, making sure that my pet gets great treatment at a fair cost. I would highly recommend them to anyone in the area.

2019-07-13Love this vet! We have been through a ton of vets and none of them felt like they were good enough or cared enough. Blue cross makes you feel like family. Customer service? Oh heck yes. They call all the time to follow up after appointments and made sure my cat was comfortable 100% of the time. He is a hard cat to deal with. We saw Dr. David. He was professional, prompt, and honest. All the staff was great. Our cat needs special food, they told us to shop around and look for a good price and if we need us a script to get it somewhere else they will provide it. Its weird being at a vet like this, one that goes above and beyond.

2021-09-24I have been taking both my dogs here for a year now. I have a Rottweiler and a Husky ( mike and Paul). The staff here has been absolutely amazing and compassionate toward my animals. They take extra time to make sure if you have any questions they answer them. Everyone knows my dogs name when they come in and they extremely friendly and professional from the front office staff to their nurses and doctors!! Highly recommend

2021-11-17The most compassionate and caring Vet staff I have ever come across. The entire staff was friendly, empathetic, loving towards the animas and a general pleasure to speak to. I will ensure this location is my primary vet for all my pet needs. I cannot say enough good things about the staff here. Takes a huge burden off of your heart when your pet is sick. Thank you. To all of you.

2020-12-06I left my previous vet after 18 years due to their treatment of myself and my bully breed doggies. After trying out several other vets in the area I called Blue Cross. From the very first phone call to the recent passing of my senior boy I have nothing but praise for all of the staff...Most of all Drs. Hillegas and McCormick. Dr. Hillegas went above and beyond when caring for my senior boy...even consulting with a human doctor at one point. She gave us such great and caring advice...always talking to us at our car (through the pandemic) and not on the phone. I cant say enough. Dr. McCormick was with us at the end and was so calm and gentle with our boy and our family. All of the staff made it so much easier. Just wonderful people here at Blue Cross. I really look forward to continuing care of our other pups here.
