Must give 5 starts for service, all servers was really nice. Food was disappointing, we have 7ppl and all leave hungry and unsatisfied. Food was very salty, heavy flavored sauce. Didnt get to take all the pictures of what weve order, appetizers was so disappointed we didnt take any entrée photos. Our bill end up to be more than 1000 but totally not worth it.
We were staying at the Dominick and decided to make it easy and dine next door. What a fantastic choice. This is a dining experience on par with its Michelin star. I loved the service more than in any other Michelin I’ve dined in because the staff is exceptionally authentic. We were seated quickly and treated to the bread and butter. It sounds so simple but it was a precursor to the fantastic food ahead. You have to eat the bread and butter. The soy is a different experience and one you’ll want to have. We elected to order the food and then get a wine recommendation from the Sommelier. She was very nice and really looked at what we were eating to make a recommendation. We ended up with a nice bottle of Champagne that just worked. I chalk it up to her excellent abilities. The Waygu and Beef Cheek were perfectly cooked and really exceeded expectations. There’s not that much to say about it other than it’s a very refined, well balanced plate and I would absolutely recommend it. Portions are quite a bit so some hungry. For dessert we went with the cheese cake. It’s whimsical and delicious. I don’t often get dessert but this is one of the items I’m glad I did.All in all it’s a fabulous restaurant that will absolutely meet your high expectations. The price won’t shock you either. For as good as it is I found it to be a really good value.
Ambiance is nice and chill, definitely a good spot for drinks as we had a couple of rounds. The food was good, each product made to execute its best flavors- though my favorite of the night was probably the complimentary bread and kombu butter.Service is attentive and informative.
Ambience: 4/5Food: 3/5Service: 4/5Value: 2/5Overall: 3/5Highlights:1. drinks were fantastic with the seasonal pumpkin being the highlight of the meal2. Soy sauce butter was delicious and couldn’t stop eating3. Chutoro was nice crisp and sauce was deliciousLowlights:1. The Salmon was over cooked and was sent back. They made us a new one which was significantly better but at that point we just wanted desert2. Salt. Everything was very salty and we couldn’t eat without drinking heavy amounts of water3. Minor: my mouse wasn’t facing the cheesecake. For a restaurant of a star caliber, you would expect better attention to detailSummary: good place to grab a drink but spend your money elsewhere. Food was ok but not worth the hype and nothing special vs other higher end restaurants in Manhattan.
I still give it a five star because this restaurant has a lot going for it. The decor and the staff are excellent. The food is great but curiously a couple of things are really not impressive even cheap tasting. This is the case for the Nori chips and the tuna toast they currently have on the menu.I’m not sure I’d drive 30 min to get there but it’s a nice restaurant that doesn’t deserve anything less than five star.
This review is geared towards the wyagu which should be tender, it wasnt. Did it taste good? Yes but chewy. The scallop was probably the best I ever had. However, I was invited here. Would I come on my own? No because the plates are tiny. I love the art and the taste but this is more of an experience than a meal and for that Id give it about 3 stars again due to the steak not the scallop dish.
Excellent food. Very much relying on the quality of the ingredients and à point preparation. The tastes are straight without any surprise sophistication. You may wonder if you can expect more of a 1-star Restaurent (Guide Michelin). The service is attentive without any formal or ceremonial style to it. Tables are bistro style without table cloths/linen. The utensils and dinnerware are. stylish. Noise level medium. Good for a urban-night hip dinner, but do not expect a European-style formal haute cuisine type restaurant.
Michelin star Punking Vegans. The chefs need a wake-up call. This restaurant hates vegans and food allergies. I planned our 2021 Christmas Eve dinner in July and the untalented team of Chefs was incapable of creating an amuse bouche, appetizer, entree, or dessert I was able to eat. Instead of saying, Nope, go somewhere else, they just stole my $$. They flat refused to provide a meal I could eat and refused to let me pass on dining. The $900 bill was a joke. They served up, no amuse- nothing-zero-goose egg, mushrooms & cream goop, slop risotto a 3rd grader made, and gimmicky diary desserts. All laughable, how on earth it has achieved this status is beyond me.The manager was so incompetent, that she/ he never addressed my table. A charge back is in order on my meal. Vestry, you cant take my reservation, charge me, and then deny me a meal.
Amazing vibe (sexy, with some dimly lit areas, modern design, elevated feel), very delicious food (especially their tuna tartar which comes in 2 pieces - perfect sharing, squash blossoms stuffed with shrimp, and cod). Great and knowledge service, good attention to details. My new go to place in Soho for a nice dinner date. Well deserved michelin star!
We came to Vestry on a recent outing looking for a place to sit and chill out after a nice afternoon in Central Park. We didn’t have reservations and arrived a little after they were opened for the day. They have an outdoor pavilion for outdoor dining but we opted for indoor seating. We were the only ones inside which was nice. The staff were very friendly and professional. The decor was good and the selection of flatware and cutlery added nice touches to the enjoyment of the food and experience. The menu is concise and you’ll find something to enjoy and be able to share. We ordered the nori chips, warm oysters and fried chicken. And we had two rounds of drinks. All were surprising and beyond satisfying. It was enough food for the both of us. Everything was beautifully presented. The warm oysters were our favorite. If you enjoy oysters on a half shelf offer raw bar foods then you will most likely enjoy this too. It’s similar in that instead of chilled oysters, they are warm and not fully cooked. It already comes dressed with an umami dressing that pairs well with the briny oysters and finishes off with a delicate apple taste that also cleanses the palate. The limited time cocktail “out of the woods” was absolute sublime mainly for the fact that it is a warm cocktail and served from a Japanese iron teapot and poured into a beautiful teacup with saucer. We look forward to returning for a nice quiet and relaxing respite of hanging out in the city.
This menu is innovation just for the sake of innovation. A Michelin star feels GENEROUS. Too overly complex to enjoy dinner without the conversation inevitably being about the meal...in a way that brings more questions than answers. The salmon (the easiest fish in the world) was pretty good, but not mind blowing. But caramelized rice? Why? Rice is already a beautiful thing. I ended up feeling nauseous after Day 2 of dinner. Also not sure I love the cheesecake literally coming with a faux mouse on the plate. This is New York City. Were outdoor dining, babe. The PTSD is real. Also if you want to eat dinner in under 2 hours, good luck! This restaurant is your new home now. You want to order? Too bad.
Not a Michelin star place any more… service is unacceptable!!! Not worth your time or money. Staff is very unqualified and service is worse than Burger King… Food is terrible with zero introduction of the meals. My friends and I had to ask what was served and this is not how this level place should provide service, and used to be much better. Next time please make sure you serve plates for food for share, check on water and drinks, especially when taking glass away and stop by sometimes… very disappointed!!!!!! Server has no idea what is in the menu and staff that brings dishes does it worse than in any chain on highways. Even after complaining about poor service nothing was done. Had to micromanage each step to ensure service for my friends who I was praising this place to: asking for plates, drinks, water, asked to explain what is served and to clean plates. What happened in the last couple of months? Tons of staff running around with zero attention to customers. Disappointed as this place had such a promising beginning.
I went here for Thanksgiving dinner. The prix fixe menu wasn’t as pricey as other restaurants at this level which was nice. I had the quail, shrimp risotto, cheesecake and two cocktails: one of them was the eggnog. Everything was delightful. I would come back here for a special occasion.
Excellent food that was carefully prepared! Wonderful ambiance! Just the right darkness! Service was friendly and attentive !! Outdoor space was beautifully done! The stairs to the bathroom is haunting. The place is a bit pricey but I would highly recommend the place! It’s right off the Sprong street around the corner from the MTA Blue Line-C or E train. Across the street from TraderJoes.
This was a real mixed bag of a meal. Some good, some bad and overall fell well short of its Michelin star. I tend to judge restaurants with the trappings and ambitions of fine dining a little more harshly than cheaper more casual restaurants. The service had problems (to be precise someone managing the service had problems).1) I was there with someone in the industry who notices these things. When we checked in for our reservation the hostess urged us to sit at the bar while we waited for our table. We ordered drinks and before they were done our table freed up. The staff offered to bring the drinks we ordered from the bar to our table once they were ready. The drinks never arrived so 15 minutes later we had to ask the waiter to bring them over since we knew the bartender had made them.2) later in the meal we ordered a bottle of sake. Someone managing this restaurant made the baffling choice to serve the sake in opaque ceramic cups and then put the bottle on ice to chill several feet away from our table. This creates an impossible task for the waitstaff because we can’t refill our drinks ourselves and the cups mean the waiters can’t easily tell if we need a refill (compared to a transparent glass). We had to ask for a refill every time, which was often for little ceramic cups smaller than a wine glass. The restaurant essentially promised a level of service that it couldn’t fulfill. Just leave the bottle next to the table so we can refill ourselves and take some of the burden off of the very busy waiters (the place was packed)!BitesNori Chips - really light and delicious. The seaweed has a nice crunch to it.Shiitake Handroll - also pretty good!Small PlatesSushi Rice - salty and scrumptious. The egginess makes the rice extra savory.West Coast Oysters - absolutely horrible on every level. The worst thing I’ve ever had in a restaurant with a Michelin star. They came topped with this overpowering and much too vinegary orange foam. They were sitting on what appeared to be little black rocks which would get caught in the oyster shell when you picked one up and fall onto your plate. When we asked the waiter what the “rocks” were he explained that they were large inedible salt granules that had been painted black — insane, stupid and unnecessary. This is the sort of thing that should never have been on the menu and where a chef’s pretentiousness far outstrips his sense. The beautiful thing about oysters is that they are naturally almost perfect and you don’t need to do much to them. This dish displays an utter contempt for nature and it’s ability to make the food which sustains us. An abomination.Large PlatesNova Scotia Halibut — fantastic. It came in a small pool of bright green sauce that had a little sweetness and hint of lime. Fish was delicate and perfect. Awesome dish.Local Cod — bland and flavorless. Felt like the dish was missing what makes it “go”. We both agreed the Halibut was much better and we didn’t finish the cod. Both large dishes came with a tiny bowl of heavenly bright orange squash purée which should have been it’s own dish on the menu so you get more of it.Overall a disappointing experience with some very good notes and two unforgivably bad dishes. Some mistakes in the service which feel more like the result of bad management than anything the waitstaff did wrong. At this tier (and high price) of dining these things are pretty glaring and I don’t know how this place has a Michelin star, especially given the problems with the menu.
I was just talking about the amazing acoustics at this restaurant the other day. Theres something about being able to hear your fellow diners that is rare these days.We were thrilled to find out that Shaun Hergatt had opened a restaurant in New York during the pandemic. We had eaten at Juni by chance many years ago and never forgot it. Vestry is a little more casual food wise since its a la carte even though its definitely a more beautifully designed space. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. I specially appreciated the steak. I dont usually order steak at restaurants because it usually comes like a big hunk of meat and Im kind of done after three bites and pack the rest up. This was the perfect portion of stunningly prepared wagyu. We had our vegetarian with us and she loved it her 21st birthday dinner. Having Shaun himself shave her truffles on her risotto was completely delightful for her.The cheesecake in the shape of cheese with a little apple mouse was adorable!Definitely a great spot for a special dinner or a nice dinner out. Unless youve got it like the guy who goes there three times a week for dinner every week that Shaun told us about.
They cancelled a reservation done weeks in advance only 2 days before, with no care in the communication. We ended up having a hard time finding a new place at the last minute.A place that has this type of price should care about the service and client experience which they dont.Absolutely a no go for me!
I am not sure the cuisine deserves a Michelin star. Most appetizers/bites were nothing special, lacked of sauce/seasoning (the mushroom in a leaf for example) and most importantly the raw fish ordered was frozen once served. The toro was also served too cold, and once unfrozen had a cardboard texture. For an appetizer at $42, its underwhelming. On the other note, the cocktails and wine were great.I would unfortunately not recommend this restaurant...
Had a delightful lunch of small bites at Vestry. The tuna brioche was textured and balanced, and paired perfectly with a glass of Japanese whiskey that was suggested. West coast oysters were fresh. Service and space was relaxed. Looking forward to coming back for dinner to try the larger format seafood dishes.
As a non-seafood eater (who is allergic), this place was fantastic, even tho it caters to the seafood lover. Really enjoyed the shitake handroll and sweet corn risotto while hubby indulged on toro special and salmon entree. Sourdough was a surprise with this type of meal but it was excellent and the butter was surely unique. Service a bit slow but not a deal breaker.
The service was unapologetically slow and very disappointing. The tuna toast and sushi rice were both delicious. The hamachi crudo was enjoyable but not sufficiently unique. We really enjoyed the wagyu beef and organic chicken and found the local cod and Atlantic salmon to be decent. The cheesecake was tasty and delightfully plated.
We came with our friends and their kids and our high school-aged kids and took 2 tables in the sturdy and attractive covered outdoor shelter. Temps were in the high 30’s and the staff provided electric heaters. With that we were warm enough. The manager and staff could not have been more welcoming or accommodating. Pacing was perfect for a leisurely meal. Drinks were great. The food was absolutely delicious and we had a wonderful time.Overall an excellent experience. Yum.
Our experience at Vestry was not what was expected coming from a Michelin star chef of that caliber. Our dinner took over 4 hours. We didnt receive our first dish until 1 hr into the meal and there was no communication from the GM nor the server (to whom we didnt even know who our server was). At this point we had only had one beverage and was not offered another, until we asked. We had to send back a dish or two due to poor execution and flavor. We informed another server that the tuna toast wasnt too our liking and they kindly removed it. There was clearly no communication with our server, GM nor kitchen because the same dish came back out with completley different toppings and still soggy bread. Our server came by the table and asked how everything was, we told him we didnt want the dish as it was the same, just with different toppings. He said okay can I get you another one? Not knowing that this was our 2nd try. The GM came out a bit later and said guess we cant win with the tuna toast, I think we should just move on. I dont understand this kind of service where the GM mocks the guests, kind of rude. We then waited anther 1hr for our next round of small plates. Directly after the clear and heading into what we thought would be our entrees, a runner drops random garlic soups at our table and walks away, with no explanation of the dish. We assumed these were compliments of the kitchen, but yet no communication as we did not order these and all we wanted was our food. The soup was so overpowering with garlic that the rest of the meal was compromised. None of the dishes matched the opening presentation nor social media. I am sober and was served a vodka based Moscow mule (not sure how this happened). The mocktails were un drinkable so I switched to ginger beers. At this point the GM was no where to be found, didnt touch the table, didnt apologize for the miscommunication and drastic delays between courses. We understand its trying times right now, but its the GMs responsibility to make the guest experience flawless no matter whats going on behind the scenes. We didnt feel welcomed, it felt like service not hospitality and we genuinely felt disrespected with how everything unfolded. Especially when the GM comps 50% of the check and cant even drop it himself. We will not be back and we really hope that chef can correct this, especially when hes away from the restaurant like last night and his team is running the ship.
Not sure where I should even start. Made a reservation for Saturday July 24th 5:45pm. Let’s start with the fact that one of our main course was completely forgotten after waiting for over two hours to get the main course. Once I have received it after waiting second time now I received it with no other then a HAIR in it. One of the waitress which was nearby saw me taking the hair out of the dish and went to call the manager. This has never happened to me before and was definitely not expected in a Michelin star restaurant. I wasn’t sure what was worst finding a hair in my food which wasn’t mine or actually having to hold with my fingers the hair until the manager came out, That was asked from me from the waitressed that witnessed it to hold the hair until the manager comes out. As expected they asked if I would like to get a new dish. As I was already there for over two hours and had been wanting to eat for so long, ones because they forgot to put in the order and second time because there was a hair in my dish. I was asked if I would like them to bring out a new one which I said yes. Now once I have asked for the check the waitress mentioned that they are bringing out a cheesecake for us complementary on the house. That was great and thoughtful. Never gave a discount only gave a cheesecake which was never asked for. Very disappointing. I have shared my experience on Instagram via DM to the account and they mentioned that someone from management will reach out. That was on July 27th. Never heard back. The food was great. The experience was disappointing.
I was disappointed by Vestry, and my three stars are an attempt at objectivity. About a decade ago I stumbled into a restaurant near Wall Street named SHO that was a transcendent dining experience. The chef, a Shaun Hergatt from Australia, created a mind blowing Asian fusion menu with the creativity of an Alinea and a taste explosion reminiscent of Jean-Louis Palladin. I ate at SHO every time I was in New York and sent dozens of people to eat there. Sadly, SHO closed, but Chef Hergatt continued to open restaurants in NYC. Vestry is his latest.Located in the former Trump Soho Hotel, the space has been home to several restaurants. The decor of Vestry may be a mixture of all of them. I didn’t get it. A cross between a flashy banquet hall and a Las Vegas nightclub, it was uncomfortably jarring to look at and did nothing to enhance our experience. Service was all over the place, with a cadre of people serving, pouring and removing. They filled the spaces between the tables scurrying about, only adding to the cacophony of noise. Vestry is loud, and hearing our server explain the menu through her mask was next to impossible.Appetizers came out quickly and were as good as the sushi place across the street from our place in Seattle. The raw fish was fresh, but where was this chef’s talent? This man has a gift. The appetizers displayed nothing. Finally my cod entree showed Chef’s Hergatt’s delicate touch, cooked perfectly, with a sublime sauce. Bravo. Yet, the risotto was heavy, laden with cheese, tasty but not gourmet. Desserts were a mixed bag. The ice cream sandwich pedestrian, but the strawberry panna cotta sublime. I was let down by this dinner. However, the diners around me, very young, casually dressed in T Shirts and blue jeans, seemed to be having a great time. None of them ate at SHO. They did not have my expectations.Perhaps Vestry will make Chef Hergatt money and the concept will be successful. However, I yearn for his gift, his art, to have a worthy showcase. Unfortunately, art doesn’t always “put food on the table.”

2022-01-12This restaurant is focused more on presenting an experience rather than filling you up. Total for two people with tips included $620. That’s because the caviar was ordered, which was phenomenal and worth it. The salmon is severely salty and was a turn off, one bite and left alone for the rest of dinner. Everything else was great. Let the pictures speak for themselves. The price they ask for is as if they are a well established restaurant that is fully booked every night. This is not the case. It looks nice, but needs some work before it can demand the price it asks for.

2022-01-16I thought the small plates and bites were good. The items were a little salty but overall good. We really loved the bread and butter. The butter was so savory and different from what we’ve had before and we enjoyed it a lot. The main course, the salmon was okay. Very monotonous. The butternut squash soup/purée on the side was good!

2022-05-25The the best restaurant I have ever been to in my life! The service and food was absolutely incredible!!! 😍 The flavor of the food was indescribable. The only bad part about this restaurant is that now when I go to other restaurants, it won’t be as good and I will never be this satisfied again.Unfortunately, New Yorkers don’t have good taste when it comes to food. All of the most highly reviewed places in NY do not taste good: all it has are big portions, which is what all New Yorkers care about in a restaurant. If you are someone who has taste and can handle unique and jaw-dropping, delicious flavor, you will love this restaurant.(The bread and butter is fantastic)

2022-02-03Everything here was immaculate. From taste, presentation, etc. it does tend to get busy, even on a week night, so service might be a bit slower. However this was an amazing experience, and I would definitely recommend to anyone else looking for a nice fine dining experience in the city. Every dish was satisfying and beyond tasty.

2022-06-05Decent place for a la carte fine dining! Interior is super, staffs are nice. For food, each menu has quite a small size so make sure to order some supplementary small bites beforehand. Still, overall experience was nice and I love the fluffy chairs!

2022-06-22Its always fun to try menus with a lot of inspirations from foreign cuisines. Unlike many Japanese-inspired places, the appearance of each dish shared a lot of similarities to authentic Japanese dish, but each dish had delicate touches to keep them very unique. We were advised to pick at least one appetizer and one entree and order together. They emphasized on how kitchen could arrange orders in the most appropriate sequences. This pre-fixe style makes sense, but I somehow felt a little nervous to order, as there were many variables and I found more interesting-sounding dish in the appetizer section. I would recommend people to visit in group of four or more, so you get to order more dish without hesitation.Entering the door, overlooking its interior, to receiving the first drink are all chique New American type of experience, until I got to see the food menu. Although the atmosphere felt a little tense in the beginning, all staffs were friendly and we got to be very comfortable immediately.

2022-04-23Where should I begin ? This place is amazing. From the service to the presentation, to the quality of food, this place is definitely a gem in SOHO. Upon entering, you can visualize the attention to detail that went towards the creation of this restaurant. The cocktails are delicious as their food. An absolutely lovely experience.

2022-04-14Creative menu, and nice ambiance. The vibes are pretty fancy/high end but casual enough to walk in off the street. Really liked the Oysters and the Tuna toast.

2022-02-13A seemingly unassuming place that we chanced upon in SoHo, we were blown away by everything on the menu. The drinks were well crafted and delicious, and every dish had rich flavor. The food got us full but was not at all heavy, and we greatly appreciated the hospitality extended by the wonderful staff.Tried the Shiitake handroll, maitake mushrooms, hamachi crudo and the homemade cheesecase. Every single dish was amazing! The complimentary bread and the accompanying butter is exceptional. Highly recommend this place!
