An intimate NYC jazz club with excellent music. We sat at the very front, so close youre touching the stage. We could see every movement of the performers hands as they played, and every facial expression... What a great way to watch such masters of the genre! Be sure to get there before the doors open to get the best seats.
Very affordable price for the greatest jazz experience. This small spot is always packed and the seating is not super comfortable, but who would mind it when you listen to the jazz legends and new talents playing live just few feet away? Can’t wait to come back again soon;)
Disappointing to our surprise, mostly in comparison with the Blue Note and Midland which we attended the same week. Although we were seated close to the stage we felt little pleasure and certainly not that intense vibration which fills up other mainstream jazz clubs elsewhere and abroad. Was the band tired that evening ? Bad choice in programmation ? Anyway cant understand how it is so well rated.
The music was breathtaking, the band is beyond amazing. The place, however, leaves much to be desired. I expected it to be cramped but I was quite dissapointed to see that the band is partially blocked from view from several seats. The service was amazing. Would highly recommend for any music lover coming to NYC, it was an amazing experience, just get ready to feel cramped.
Historic jazz club home to some of the best musicians in NYC. Lovely, atmospheric venue, good seating and staging, and of course fantastic musicians playing all night long. My only complaint is that the pricing is steep: $35 for a standard ticket and then you have to buy a compulsory drink per set with the cheapest beer costing $8. I understand that this is NYC, but other jazz clubs such as Smalls and Mezzrow have equally good music but for half the price.
Its hard to believe that this is the same place I went to in the early 60s when I was in high school to hear the Paul Butterfield blues band! But apparently it is. Reasonable admission fees for sets and a one drink cover. I had sparkling water; beer and wine are available of course. No hot tea or coffee. The mens room is all the way in the back pass the kitchen and past the the room where the musicians hang out between sets. There are seats with limited views but overall the acoustics are great. This used to be a place to hear folk music when that was the rage and is now a place to hear great jazz.
The vanguards music set was exquisite. The 16 piece jazz group had everything. It is a cosy place and if you want the best seats, it is best to arrive early. We reached at 10 pm for a 10:30 pm show and all we got was seats at the back. We probably should have arrived 45 minutes before to get better seats but the jazz was great.
I went to see the Bill Charlap Trio and had an incredible time. From the staff at the door to our server the entire experience was excellent. I now listen to this jazz trio often on Spotify. My wife and I can’t wait to return. The only thing we wished was that we were able to attend the earlier show and stay for an extra set. Places like this truly make NYC special.
The high temple (in a non-religious way) of modern jazz. Nice and friendly atmosphere, you immediately feel welcome. Finally getting the chance to visit after having digged all those Live at the Village Vanguard recordings throughout the years was like a dream come true.
Though I spent a sweet evening, I am very disappointed of the ticketing service. I tried to buy tickets a first time, but as I didnt receive any confirmation email or messages (I waited for more than 2 hours) I bought the tickets again. Once arrived at the Village Vanguard, they told us we had 4 tickets instead of 2 and didnt want to refund us! Nevertheless I NEVER received my tickets. I sent 3 emails but no response. Its very disappointed, I will never come back again. Be careful.
Classic New York. VV needs no introduction. If youre tired of the trendiness of newer establishments and youve never been to the Vanguard, go immediately. Never overly crowded, always wonderful jazz. Buy tickets online to avoid waiting in line. Ive never been unhappy in this place. Coming here is refreshing and always memorable. Ive discovered a few new favorite musicians at this venue. So much is owed to this Village establishment.
What a classic place that doesnt just stand on its storied history but continues to host great acts. A bit cramped and tight but it doesnt matter when everyone is friendly and the staff are super helpful and efficient. Whether a local or a traveler, you simply must go at least once, but hopefully again and again.
Great vibe. This is one of those legendary new York places that lasted at the same spot since the old days. You can really feel the presence of all the jazz greats lined up on the wall here. I mean, every jazz great had an album titled Live at the Vanguard, and you can feel it when you enter. Trane, Monk, Miles... its inconceivable that they played at this very spot!Service was good, seats comfortable, prices reasonable. Audience respectful of performers. What else could one ask for?Make sure to get there early, I suggest 30 min before the doors (about 1 hr before show) to get a good table.
I have no Jazz gene. So I am biased. But went with a friend who loved it and likes Jazz.My feeling as a non Jazz lover on a Monday when the Jazz House not so big band plays at 20:30 or 22:30.It is one of the best clubs according to the lists. So if that is the case then I went to a great place. But:You pay 35 dollars entry fee and you have to take a drink which are expensive. They play for 1 hour and 10 min. With a lot of talking between it. Also they emphasize a lot on solo’s.The place is cramped and I really wondered if it was save incase of an emergency as you are in a cellar and there is very very little room between the tables and chairs to get out when needed. But if you take the subway in New York you probably do not mind this club.
This classic jazz club and Greenwich village institution has stayed true to its origins.Musicians play two sets, and I prefer the late set after having a drink nearby with friends. The ambience is great and I keep coming back every time Im in New York. Highly recommended!
THE place to go for jazz in the city. The history of this venue is astounding. You can’t get any better than the Village Vanguard. Monday nights are especially great because the house big band will play music from past bandleaders such as Thad Jones. The talent that consistently comes here is always above average. Seating can be first come, first serve, recommend coming 40-30 hour before your set time to guarantee the best space/view.
This is an incredible jazz club with a rich history and legacy. Many jazz greats of the past and present have performed here and will continue to perform at this venue. The venue itself is adequate in size but still cozy with a great atmosphere and vibe, the perfect setting for an evening of jazz music. The acoustics in this building are also top notch.Minors are welcome here. I am under 21 and had no issues with buying a ticket or being seated. There is a one drink minimum per set, but there is a non-alcoholic menu. That meant, however, that I did have to pay $5 for a glass of Tropicana (plus a tip).
Wonderful night and well organized, we had a great view quite close to the front. The sound was great and the waitresses were discreet but attentive.I would advise to arrive early to assure yourself of a good seat. We arrived 35 minutes before the performance and waited around 15 minutes before the doors opened. Over in we were seated quickly and were soon enjoying it drinks and some great music.Definitely going back.
Iconic, legendary jazz club. Terrific atmosphere. Keep this intimate? basement place going forever!! It is a phenomenal place. Jazz, art, nice people. Bar and table seating. Big band on Mondays. A good bet anytime. West Village location and easy to find. Friendly staffers.
A legendary Jazz club that has entertained thousands of people since 1935. If only the walls of the Vanguard could talk. I first went in High school and always enjoyed this club and hope to do so for many years to come. Definitely recommended for all those from NYC and anyone visiting the greatest city in the United States. The Vanguard continues to serve all patrons of the art of Jazz should definitely be on the bucket list for all of those who have yet to attend one of their live shows.
Its an authentic experience. The location is great, and the trio playing the night we went were great and very talented. We were lucky to be seated close to the stage. Just FYI you can only order drinks before the show starts, there are no breaks, so if you are in a party mood, just make sure youre good before they start.
This place is historic and typically brings in world class jazz artists. Everyone who loves jazz should go at some point in their lives. But the Jazz Standard brings in the same quality of artists (many play both venues), and provides infinitely better drinks and service in a much more comfortable (i.e. less packed) environment. Hard to see myself returning here except when there is an artist I simply have to see.
Without a reservation you wait for a long time for seating. When you do get in youre crammed tightly between others. There is a drink minimum and most drinks are expensive. Entrance was fairly pricey, too.The sound is great and the atmosphere is very quiet and attentive once the music starts. There is a palpable sense of history here. The performers were veterans and gave off the sense they were performing for old friends.
One of the best jazz places in New York. If you want to get good seats, I suggest arriving by the time their door opens, as lines begin to form. We booked tickets online for the 8:30pm show and arrived by 7:30pm. The lines quickly formed, but we had one of the best seats.
Incredible jazz club! Great vibe. A NY institution with a rich history. Get there early for good seats. No videos or photos allowed. Which I though would be annoying but is actually kind of refreshing. We were able to really enjoy the show without the distraction of needing to capture it.
Fantastic and intimate hole-in-the-wall jazz venue with great acoustics. Its literally underground, and the music is hopping. The cover is $20 cash (look for student discounts for late shows), and youll have an unlimited pass for a nights worth of live music here and the more mellow Mezzrows (nearby). With drinks, a night here might get a little pricey, but there are way more expensive jazz options in the city, and the musical experience was superb.Tip: come a little early to ensure you get a seat, as the venue gets packed! Id assume that youll avoid those weekend lines on weekdays. Perfect spot for an after-work date or a social event with a small group of friends who appreciate good music.
A Definitive Jazz Dive: This place is just about the music and steeped in the history of jazz. Its a dank basement crowded with hard seats, tiny tables, a weird shaped bandstand with a partially obstructing support, and a funky ripped drape as a backdrop. Walls covered with pictures of the most accomplished jazz musicians since 1935 when the place opened. But the great ones still play there and most feel more than lucky to have seen and heard them there.
I was there last night and loved the music. But the way they set up the seats made it impossible for anyone sitting in the back to see any of the performers. The performers were on a make-shift stage at one end of the room instead of the stage that I have seen used before that is in the center of the room. If I am going to go to a live concert, I would like to see the performers. It was like listening to a good DVD. I would have been better off watching them on YouTube.
Legendary venue that lived up to its name. There is nothing like descending down a steep incline of steps and being greeted by a room full of history and class. There is a drink minimum that has to be met but that was actually a perk because the bartender was killin it when I went with some pretty stout drinks. Not to mention the jazz. The jazz is what makes it happen in there. Go experience NYC history and see the Village Vanguard. I guarantee you will be blown away.
I went to see the Bill Charlap Trio at the Village Vanguard on Saturday. The atmosphere is an old school 60s vibe...artsy and vibrant. While the seating is a bit tight, if you go early, you get a seat next to the stage. You hear every note, see every expression and feel the energy coming from the artists. Theres a one drink minimum but the ticket prices so reasonable there isnt anything to complain about. I truly enjoy a good night of music. The Village Vanguard provides it.
Happy Birthday to Bill Frisell :) Wow his live streaming session blew us away! This streaming would be supposed to be by today, but I hope I would love to see this session later again(eager to pay in that case). So great.Thank you Village Vanguard for amazing live streamings. You saved us many times during this pandemic!
There is a lot to credit this place for, and Im glad to have been able to see a show there, but being honest, it will never be among my favorite venues.Plus; It gets some of the best talent in jazz, the sound system is impeccable, the audience pays attention to the music, the decor (photos of artists that have played there since the 30s) is awe-insipring.Minus; Very cramped seating on uncomfortable chairs, poor sightlines (I was less than 1/2 way back and couldnt really see the drummer much at all), no hot drinks (no coffee). When I had trouble seeing I tried to stand up for a song or two, toward the back with no one behind me, and was admonished and told to sit by facility staff. There is no question that this place is a sort of jazz-church/mecca where people go to be reverent. The audience applauds politely but it is hard to say that people are having a good time. I left after a recent show and walked about 2 blocks to another Village venue (The Garage) where I saw another jazz-3-piece play a set with no cover, lots of enthusiasm, a full bar with food (and coffee) and genuine joy and enjoyment. I also will admit that the no devices policy, and severe enforcement kind of bugs me. I understand that in todays device obsessed culture it sucks to have some douche with a cell phone taking flash photos or video recording whole chunks of a set, or a whole audience of people looking at their screens instead of the stage but this place runs the other extreme and I just wanted to snap a couple photos as a reminiscence of my evening out with my friend Michael.
Terrible attitude and service. People are getting cramped in the small space. We were first seated in a row of chairs with no table. When we asked to move they moved us to a table in the passage to the kitchen and warned us to not move our chairs from against the wall to not block the way. When we were asked if the new seat is better and hesitated to answer for a second, the person started yelling at us Yes?? No?? What do you want?! And walked away. Show was ok but definitely not supporting this terrible attitude again, there are plenty of jazz clubs in NYC
The performance was great but the service not so much. I went to the showing on October 20th and the process was pretty straight forward, we were seated easily but the waitress did not have the training needed to accommodate a large group. She only came by once for our drink order and had an attitude.
I have been coming here since 78. My dad would take my brothers and I when we were kids.I stopped by The Vanguard this past fall and it is exactly as I remembered as a kid on Monday nights. Some of the greatest jazz musicians on the planet, all in one room playing Big Band (Thad Jones/Mel Lewis) tunes from 40 years ago.No where in the world have I ever been sitting that close to so much talent. This place is heaven for jazz lovers.
On a whirlwind 36 hour trip to NYC, we made the decision to go the Village Vanguard to hear Kenny Barron. My 17 year old daughter has always been a casual jazz fan, but this visit strengthened her interest and she got the live experience...that thrill of jazz in action. The weight of the history of the Vanguard is palpable. You go down to the basement and feel the buzz of the place immediately. The wait staff is pretty friendly and theres a 2 drink minimum..but you dont have to have booze. The crowd is amazing. You know youre with serious jazzoids in here. A table of French jazz aficionados sat behind us - several tables of Japanese fans were across from us, and that impressed my daughter as well.To enjoy Kenny Barrons trio live was sublime...and watching my daughters world expand is priceless.
What can one say about the mecca for live jazz in NY. . many a greats have bloomed from its hallowed stage. If you are in it for a glitzy glamorous top class service and food, please do not visit here. But if you are going for purely the music, highly recommend it. $30 for the kind of artists these guys put up is a small price.
A jazz legend in and of itself, the Vanguard is largely unchanged from its glory days. You cant smoke down there now but close your eyes and you can almost smell the cigars from decades ago while the jazz goes long into the night. Vanguard does an outstanding job of balancing old-school heroes with formidable young talent without dropping a beat. Drink menu is expensive but solid. Expect to spend some money and be so glad about it.
My visits started 1974 and went on trough the 80s 90s to CHANGE of centuriesvisiting the AES audio engineering society or importing DiMarzio pick Ups ,or Community Loudspeakers ,Pioneer TAD compression driver ....and hanging out here to listen to Ron Carter , Dizzi Gillespie eg.nice to see and hear it still is THE CLUB letsmove for ONE WORLD with good attitudes toUN & UNESCO culture
Jack Kerouac’s beatnik style has been embraced by grottoes and coffee shops across the United States, from Greenwich Village to San Francisco. The Village Vanguard, however, was at the center of the movement, with Kerouac himself having performed poetry at the club. Visitors can recapture the spirit of the Beat Generation by checking out live music from the likes of the Chris Potter Quartet, the Fred Hersch Trio and Donny McCaslin. Those looking for something extra special should head to the club on a Monday night to see the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, who have performed in the same slot since 1966.
I am from Mpls. Bought 5 tickets for what I thought were for Wednesday (4/24/19) to see the Gerald Layton Quintet. Oopsie! In reality I bought tix for Tuesday 4/23/19. Silly humans and technology, slip of the finger. We get there to find we were 1 day late. In make-believe world, where shows are sold out on Tuesdays or Wednesdays in a has/been, $hit hole jazz club - MY BAD. In the REAL WORLD, when the show isn’t sold out on either a Tuesday or Wednesday for the late show - these yay-hoos actually refused to honor our tickets. It was showtime and nobody was there. They sent us away. So stupid. They LOST money on us. We drink. They could’ve sat us in the back corner and kicked us out if they sold out. How sad Mr. Layton didn’t have a full house of admiring admirers. And for WHAT?!? The Village Vanguard thinks more of themselves than they do jazz artists or jazz consumers. So precious. So LAME. Dingbat at the ‘desk’ was an auto-motron spouting the corporate line. Ya lost money that night, kids. F U.
This place is a Landmark for BeBop Jazz heads. I used to go to the Vanguard In the early ‘70’s with my little Brother and Parents(we were 12 and 10 years old -Fathers clout In the business and Max’s Love allowed two young boys to partake in the history making shows... Lee Morgan , Betty Carter and so many more to name) My father is legendary Jazz Promoter Jim Harrison. The place still has that same beautiful Jazz Spot of yesteryear. It’s a nice walk down a flight of stairs into the club of Jazziness and Happiness. Max’s legendary Jazz Club carries on with the Class Style and Finesse as it was meant to be! GO CHECK IT OUT! 🎶I was just there for the reading and playing of the Legendary Dexter Gordon’s Book “ SOPHISTICATED GIANT” by The Wonderful MAXINE GORDON. #villagevanguard #dextergordon #sophisticatedgiantbook #maxinegordon #bebopjazz
Caught the Tom Harrell quintet. The set combined with the history of the venue made for a rarefied experience. Set was sold out the morning, but managed to sneak in due to some timely cancelations. Try and reserve a week in advance if possible, or gamble on seats, if you want the earlier set.
Such bad modern what they call jazz. What a let down! Beyond disappointed... We left early and even the manager apologized that the definition of jazz is very different today... Ive seen a lot of jazz and this was a terrible experience... What great history that lacks substance today...
Went to see Jimmy Heath but he was sick. The Vanguard didnt announce or tell anyone that he wasnt showing up but they had some subs that couldnt cut it. Then at the end thinking that they were the warm up, the Vanguard passes out the check for full price. What a bunch of B.S. no ethics people. The current management has really turned the Vanguard into a tourist trap willing to soak anyone who walks in the door and play them like a sucker.
I saw Esperanza Spalding and Geri Allen play in this venue past December!!! The atmos is very cozy /Intimate, and obviously historic. Its tiny underground situation subtly saysvspeakeasy and the performance space really brkngs the artist(s) into full focus. Go There, haha, and have an awesome evening.
I bought my ticket online as a birthday present for myself. When I arrived the host told me the ticket wasnt for that day, but instead for the day I purchased it (2 days before). I appealed to him explaing that it was my birthday and I specifically bought the ticket for that day b/c it was my birthday. He insited I had the wrong ticket and finished with Im sorry, were fully booked and called the manager. Once I began to talk with the manager, I asked what can we do about it?, here the story changed, and the manager said If you buy a new ticket we can certainly accomodate you. Im sorry to say that the management really disappointed me. Instead of taking the oportunity to make a life long client who will bring friends and family time and again, they chose to be greedy to make an extra 30$, and a result gainned this review. I would have stayed for the second set as a thank you. As I left, I chatted with one of the mucicians at the back door, he offered to let me in through the back stage, I thank him dearly for that, but instead went to Smoke Jazz, where the staff are great, and theres always someone with a warm smile to greet you in. Im sure the Jazz at the VV is great, but I prefer to go to places where people are treated as people, not as an ATM.
What else is there to say? Its the Village Vanguard!Ive included a picture of their latest sanitary inspection grade. The Vanguard got an A! Who wouldve believed it? After all these years of wondering who owned the cellar (Lorraine Gordon or the neighborhood rats), we finally have an answer.
I can’t even believe I went through what I went through when coming here. The most racist people I have ever encountered. I have heard bad about this place, then i decided to come see for myself. The way I was treated was unexplainable. The service was terrible. There were people rude. I would never recommend this place to anyone.

2022-04-12An iconic New York jazz club, cozy and small in size. Its an old establishment, the tables are close together and the place feels a bit crowded. Despite this, the acoustics are very good. It is highly recommended to go on a Monday to listen the mythical big band The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. They offer two functions at 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. It is convenient to get tickets online beforehand, although the location is then by order of arrival. Therefore, there is usually a queue at the entrance prior to each function and the situation is complicated in case of rain because there is no adequate protection.Currently they also require proof of vaccination to enter. In addition to the $35 admission, a drink is mandatory, the cheapest being a $9 beer.QR tickets are sent by email.A necessary visit for jazz lovers.

2022-03-21The place of jazz legends. Monday night with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra (formerly Thad Jones/Mel Lewis). Its a very intimate setting. With all thats been done here and the enormous shoes that have stood on the stage I would have expected it to be more expansive. But then, thats not jazz.

2022-04-22We saw Aaron Parks on a Thursday night. We got there at 7:55 for a 8 pm show. We should have got there early. They gave us two small seat at the back. But it was cool. The show started at 8:20 . It was pretty much a one hour set. I wanted more. I thought it was short. But means it was a good show.

2022-05-04Different show every night in one of the most iconic jazz venues. I can’t think of anything else more appropriate to unwind in the city than to enjoy a drink listening to the fabulous artists present here each night. It can’t get any more New York than this.

2021-12-07Great jazz in a cozy club. Table service only which was slow because there was only a couple servers for the whole place. Drinks were great and music was amazing. Didn’t get too many photos as they asked not to use photography.

2021-10-31The legendary club where all the greatest jazz players have passed through, the Vanguard is more affordable than its NY cousins, the Blue Note and Birdland, with truly reasonable ticket prices and drink menu. It is hard to be more intimate with the artists than in this magical venue.

2022-02-17This is a classic New York jazz club. The atmosphere is small and intimate, the entrance is down a flight of stairs to the basement, adding to the atmosphere of the shows seen here. If youre a handicapped individual the staff is willing to help you down the stairs but there is no designated handicap entrance. All should purchase tickets in advance and you should arrive early for the show as they fill seats from front to back. There is also a one drink minimum per ticket, the drink menu is certainly adequate with several liquors, cocktails, wines, and non-alcoholic beverages while the beer menu is more limited. As is the standard at most venues and restaurants per the continuing pandemic a mask is required as is proof of covid vaccination. Overall I highly recommend this venue as it is a classic New York jazz club and not one that should be missed. Their shows are well curated and run for a couple weeks at a time. Doors open at 7pm with shows starting at 8 and 10pm.

2022-03-04The Mecca of Jazz. The history seeps through the room. Cozy and tight, but a great club. Fairly quiet all considered. It is an older establishment, so prepare for staircases entry and exit. Great acoustics. Great staff, good drinks, good sounds. Worth a trip downstairs.

2022-03-19The Village Vanguard is probably the last of worlds great original jazz clubs. Based in a cellar in New Yorks Greenwich Village, the place oozes jazz history with magical albums made there by the likes of Sonny Rollins, Bill Evans and Art Pepper. The club opened in 1935, becoming a jazz club in 1957. The Vanguard is tiny, seating around 70. There is no kitchen, so no food is available. There are however beverage servers who will bring drinks to your table.Over the last 60 plus years the Vanguard as featured virtually all of the jazzs top performers. I went there a couple of weeks ago on a Wednesday night for the second set and had the pleasure of seeing a jazz legend in the shape of tenor saxophonist, George Coleman guesting with the Peter Bernstein Trio. Despite his 87 years, George Coleman enthralled the knowledgeable audience. A memorable night indeed! Also, I must mention that the Vanguard staff are extremely friendly.
