A brilliant little hole in the wall, perfect for a drop in or a night of Belgian-fueled leisure. The fries are delicious and complement the beer well but eat beforehand if youre in the mood for something else. Its a little pricey but the beer is top-notch and service at the bar is quick.
Overpriced Mainstream Belgian Beer at $18 a pint (they give an 8 oz pour for an average $9). No happy hour. Service is friendly but lacking. I watched people ask multiple times to close out. Patrons ignored for too long waiting to order, etc. On the upside, the space is warm and welcoming. It is a nice place to meet up and has an outdoor area. Cider on draft was good and at reasonable pricing. Fries are fine but nothing special enough to warrant $6 for a little cone. So generally I wouldnt go here cause its egregious pricing and inattentive service outweigh the nice interior and friendliness once they do pay you attention.
A very cool, low-key bar in the heart of Greenwich Village. I really like the ambiance: a low-lit interior with a reddish hue and a nice little terrace out front. Well-suited to conversation (i.e no loud music and ample seating) and a nice selection of Belgian beers (and fries!). Plus they take credit card! The place gets packed on weekend evenings, but that isnt a huge surprise. Great spot to blow off steam mid-week, though.
Vol de Nuit has been closed for a while during the pandemic so I’m really hoping it roars back to life soon. A gréât place that really captures the feeling of a Belgian hangout. Of course an excellent selection of Belgian beers and frites with frite sauces. Im hoping they bring back the mussels one day!
One of the great underrated and little know bars in the village. The outdoor courtyard is a terrific summer hang spot and the bar inside is dark, and brooding with an old school charm. They have a great selection of draft beers and an eclectic crowd of people. They only have one bathroom and the lines can get crazy. The bar situated in the back left corner is a bit trying to get to at times but its worth it for the chill atmosphere this place offers.
Last Saturday I went here from my fiances birthday. She is always like this bar and wanted to bring a bunch of friends here so we decided to check it out. The waiters were nowhere to be found and when we finally did find them it seems like they were angry that we had disturb them from whatever they were doing. All of the drinks are incredibly overpriced and the seating is uncomfortable. There were some chairs that honestly had no backs on them. It seems like the staff was irritated by the patrons, their jobs, their lives, and the whole experience. I have to say I would agree with them. I will probably never go back again. Needless to say, I was disappointed.
The Upsides: They serve La Chouffe, which is a really crisp, slightly sweet, floral Belgian beer. I rarely find this on tap elsewhere. Trendy yet laid back crowd. Dark red lighting which makes everyone feel kind of cooler. Serve Belgian fries w/various sauces - nothing really unique about these but theyre a welcome accompaniment to the beer.
[Very] dimly lit bar in the Village with an average beer selection. Great for a date night, music isnt loud at all so you can actually have a conversation. They lost my credit card here, I think they gave it to the wrong person. I came back the next day. They spend 10 minutes looking for the card - it was evident they recall seeing it at some point - but told me they couldnt find it. They then printed me a receipt with an auto-charge tip. This is standard if you leave your card behind at a bar... but, they fully admitted to losing my credit card. I was a bit shocked that they thought this was in any way acceptable. After complaining they removed the entire charge, which I appreciated. However, there was no apology for losing my card.
Good selection of Belgium beers under dim red lighting make for a different sort of NYC bar experience. Its location of down a short alley off of west 4th give it a hint of seclusion in an otherwise very crowded area. The dimly lit interior can be a little loud for conversations when its busy, but theres also a good outdoor seating area which is much quieter and a cool place to chill out if you can score a table.
Great place with out door but enclosed patio. Well thought out draft selection, with many favorites and some herder to find out Leser know ones, at least here in the states. They have fries for food, with a few topping selections. Well worth the visit, and really chill staff and easy location.
Great beer but the ambience is robbed as they don’t enforce a no smoking policy in the courtyard where they serve you. The courtyard is pretty self contained so it’s not well ventilated and therefore you’re stuck with second hand smoke. Told the staff and manager about the table next to us smoking and they flat out stated they don’t enforce it and that “people come here specifically to smoke.” Both disgusting and illegal.
I described this place to my friends as the place thats dark and red and has lots of belgium beer because I couldnt remember the name. When we finally got there, they were impressed with how apt my description was.The beer selection is excellent - I dont know of another place in this area that has as good a selection of belgium beers. Anywhere you can get Chimay Blue on tap is fine by me.The place is also pretty spacious. My only complaint is that the patrons seem to think theyre pretty hip for being there, so you have to kind of deal with that, but its not too big a deal.Note - there is a $20 minimum for credit cards.
Ive gone a few first dates here, and I must say its a great bar to make conversation enjoy the atmosphere. I wouldnt say its explicitly romantic, but it has that vibe that can make a conversation at a bar seem intimate. Of course, Im also a big fan of belgium beers and fries, so thats a bit plus. Id definitely recommend it, both for dates and friends.
Belgian bar is one of the best bars by NYU. I say Belgian bar, because in college I had no idea what its real name was; thats what everyone Ive ever spoken to has called it. You go in on theres an outdoor area with seating and a bar thats closed unless theyre packed, and then theres a dark, indoors area with more seating and a full bar. All the beer is from Belgium or is Belgiam-style, as you could expect: Hoegaarden, Chimay, Lindemans, etc. Some of the beers are fairly common in the city now a days, some are more rare. Between the tap and their bottle selection, if youre a beer enthusiast you should be satisfied. Prices are good considering that these beers are much stronger in alcohol content than normal beers--and more satifying. Ive their frites a few times which are good for bar food; I wouldnt try anything else. Service is good at the bar, less so if youre at a table outside. This place definitely has that cool craft bar vibe to it if thats what youre looking for. Ive had some great times here in college just hanging out, and it says something that I continue to come back when Im in the area.
Duval is the national pride of Belgium, or at least Im told every single round when Im out with my Belgian friends. Duval Green is a small batch variation made specifically for Belgian themselves, tailored to their taste instead of the one sent abroad. Not only does this bar have Duval Green, but they even have it on tap, which is apparently rare even in Belgium -- all for a price comparable to most beers in the city. The place is fantastic and in a great location.
Vol de Nuit is a hidden Belgian bar in the West Village. Its got that dim, red lighting that most other NYC Belgian bars have. Its also got the pricey drinks. But with this price tag, you do get quality Belgian beers. You also get the comfort of a seat and no crowds, which is hard to come by at bars in this neighborhood. It wasnt packed for a Friday night, but I imagine its because a majority of the population frequenting the bars in this area are broke NYU students looking for Off the Wagon type places.Bottom line:Pros - good beer, no crowds, Temptations-era playlistCons - pricier than average, too much heat
I don’t think of this place unless it’s warm out and I’d like to have a great Belgian beer in an outdoor patio. The air in NY can be disgusting, but when you find a cool relaxing spot like this, there’s really nothing better. Unfortunately, the inside of the bar is of no interest to me (especially when it’s warm outside). I don’t usually care for the music played indoors for some reason and prefer the patio area. It’s like there’s two different bars in one here. The scene indoors does nothing for me yet the scene outside is chill and hard to beat. However, I must remember to try their pomme frites the next I’m there.
Amazing Belgian beer is hidden in this nondescript bar. Behind a small courtyard, a simple sign is your only guess of the revelry inside. A neighborhood institution, and common IFC theater hangout, get there early so you can enjoy the mussels and frites without the roar of the crowd that grows through the night. Dark, dim and red, Vol de Nuit is sultry and the only place I know to get Duvel Green on tap.
So they still make fries but no mussels?! That was the whole kitsch of the place! Its why I brought people! Also I had to REMOVE A BATHROOM DOOR FROM ITS HINGES BECAUSE SOMEONE GOT STUCK INSIDE. A broken door knob takes all of a single trip to the hardware store and ten minutes to replace. Really sad, I loved this place.
Bad service. Ive been here a few times, 5-6 over 2 years, and on 3 occasions I had to ask them to adjust the check because they were charging 1-2 more beers. This last time it took them 25min to bring an order of large fries (a total joke because it was a small paper cup). At the end, the waiter got mad at us and kicked us out because we did not agree with the check.

2022-06-20This bar was not too busy when I arrived. I ordered a few of their Belgium-style beers and had a seat without much to do. Its a fairly minimalist place, as there really isnt anything to do and its seating doesnt really encourage social interactions. Still, its sparseness gave me something to do when everything else was booked on a busy Friday night.

2021-12-02A very nice Belgian bar that has been around for over ten years. You can get your Delirium Tremens and Frites fix here. They have really nice outdoor seating and two levels indoor. They have an excellent selection of beers from Belgium. I often bring folks visiting me, here, as part of their tourist experience. Its in the West Village, so one can easily hop over to another one of the many bars in the neighborhood for continuing revelry.

2022-04-14I met friends here for a socially distance beer experience. It is charming and sitting in the front outside somehow it feels like we have privacy because it is set back a little bit from the street. I had a Cherry kriek which was just delicious, and later another lovely and strong Belgian beer that the bartender recommended. I cannot say a bad thing about this place.

2022-05-22One of my favorite hide out bars... you walk through a small tunnel to open up a little bar that feels like you are in Belgium. They used to have the rasberry on tap but the last i went they did but they do have it in bottles which is still great. They also have a good choices of finger foods to go with the frambios so definitely a place to check out and highly recommended

2020-01-18Came here for drinks on a Friday night with a large group of friends in January. We were able to grab a bunch of seats by the door, which was great but it was a bit cold. We had several orders of fries, which were delicious. They were served with both ketchup and mayo. The white wine selection was a bit limited, but I guess that’s expected at a beer garden.

2020-01-23Very good place for Belgian beers. Smaller selection of draft Belgian beers but its a very chill place and still has good prices and good beers and it’s close to one of my favorite restaurants on the city. They only serve fries though so if you’re cool with that, go for it (small update: you can bring your own food if you want)

2020-02-28The selection of Belgian beers is impressive, and the ambiance reminds me of some of my fav bars in Europe. Plus the bartenders are so nice! I left my bag one night and they kept it safe for me to pick up the next day!! Much appreciated!!

2022-04-22Would love to see the Belgian theme be pushed further, maybe with Jupiler commercials and Brel posters on the wall? Also, bottled beer are pretty expensive and there arent enough tables.

2022-07-16Easily my favorite bar in the city. Maybe for sentimental reasons, those reasons were well earned however. Love it here.
