My son and I went there to check out the abandoned buildings. We loved it. It was a different experience, fascinating to see some of the old buildings and machinery (probably old furnaces), and even some beautiful graffiti. I have no idea what the history is behind those buildings, but Im about to look it up...
Welwyn preserve was a great location! It was a little confusing to find because Google Maps gave us a different address/location. We did a search en route on Google and that gave us the correct address.Once we arrived, there was a narrow road through a gate thats unmarked as to where you should park. The road deadends at a beautiful building and its a short walk to the dirt trails which meander through the lush greenery and past a pond. You can choose the paved road down to the beach if you dont want to hike.If you choose the trails remember that they arent marked, so keep track of your direction. We took the trails but we got turned around. Once we got our bearings, we back tracked and went to the beach to catch sunset. It was beautiful and chilly! After our visit to the beach we came back up on the paved road because it was dark.Make sure you know before you go so youre prepared for the weather.Have fun!
One of the prettiest nature preserves around lots of interesting things to look at throughout your hike. Whether its walking over a little wooden bridge, or going through a descending Trail to get to the beach, theres also a meadow, a Childrens Garden and some really interesting graffiti in the old greenhouses.
Im a lifelong native of Glen Cove. Having lived around the world, home is home. Being a Movement Coach I love training people out of the proverbial box and to see clients especially people from glen cove stare in wonderment is gratifying. Wether your running full speed or just walking and taking in the Nature. Go! Go tomorrow👊👌

A very beautiful place to experience some nature. The museum is currently closed as of 4/5/21, but the grounds seem well kept. There are many trails through the woods that wind around leading towards both the bay and the beach nearby (there is a direct route towards the beach too but thats just boring). Along the paths lie many abandoned houses and greenhouses that the local artists have turned into a beautiful art culture sight with vibrant artworks and murals that change on almost a weekly basis, well worth visiting often. Do take care though as I had to walk through a shallow muddy creek as one of the trails I took was being reclaimed by nature, but I took the roads least taken and the most exotic route possible in my nature hike. Overall the wooden bridges may seem damaged at times but still serve their purpose so I have to say that as a nature hike path, it really is still a nice and beautiful one.
This place would be a usual 5 stars but the lack of upkeep this summer and early fall after tropical storms herni and ida have really taken their toll on this place. Lots of the bridges are damaged and unstable, the stream has brought alot of debris to the trails, and there are some trees down that block access to certain areas. In addition there seems to be a fair amount of washout and erosion on the trails. It’s a shame considering this is one of my favorite old growth forest hikes around. It seems there might have been flash flooding in the little stream and it has dumped so much debris and garbage into the sound and marsh areas and shorelines that is all washing onto the beach. A good cleanup and trail maintenance should straighten things out. I might even bring some friends to do a beach and tidal marsh clean up 🤙🏽
Place is amazing. Grew up in Glen Cove probably spent days of my life here in total... Literally. Nice abandoned building with graffiti. Trails are beautiful and well maintenanced. Theres a beach, with some jetties. Pretty good size too for a preserve. All around awesome spot.
Nice place for doing some unpaved trail hikes. Its a large mostly forested area. I looked online, but they dont seem to have a map of the trails, which would be helpful. Not a lot of signage. There is a paved path from the parking lot to the beach, which has a short paved boardwalk and some benches. No public restroom. There is a restroom inside the main building, which is a museum, but that requires admission (and a reservation during covid). Not sure that I would come back. But there are abandoned buildings on the property which are mostly being allowed to return to nature. You have to seek them out mostly.
The Welwyn Preserve County Park is a gorgeous public nature reserve located in Glen Cove, New York.Welwyn Preserve (formerly the Welwyn Estate) once served as the estate of Harold Irving Pratt, an American industrialist, philanthropist and member of the prominent and wealthy Pratt Family. In April Of 2021, my wife and I visited the Welwyn Preserve and explore the site’s extensive woodland area and viewed the coast facing the Long Island Sound. The major attraction of Welwyn Preserve and where my wife and I also visited and toured is the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center Of Nassau County. The Holocaust Memorial & Tolerance Center Of Nassau County is an exceptional institution that honors the memory and experience of the Jewish people during the Holocaust, one of the darkest and most troubling chapter in human history. Both my wife and I very much enjoyed our time at the center. We definitely recommend that everyone visit this institution and also take the time roam and explore the incredible woodlands of Welwyn Preserve!!!
Great trail and beautiful forest. Some things to watch out for1 lots of mosquitos, there is a marsh after all2 glass from broken beer bottles in some places3 people illegally fishing4 people who unleash their dogs - supposedly no dogs allowed in preserve but once people sneak their dogs in many figure it’s out to unleash their dogs5 groundskeeper starts beeping his horn like mad person around half hour prior to close every night and starts yelling at people to go home, intimidating,, would try to avoid going around then
This is one of my favorite places on Long Island. Many people dont realize that the forest to the right of the mansion is an old growth forests -- actually one of the most spectacular forests Ive seen on the east coast. The tulip trees are gigantic -- they actually remind me a little of redwoods. A must see for forest lovers!
This is one of those parks that looks amazing all year around. I came here about 3 weeks before the fall foliage and then on the peak of the fall foliage. On the first time, I came across a hidden trail that seems that many people do not know about on the Northeast side of the park with more ruins and graffiti art, and it was lonely compared to the graffiti building next to the museum and parking lot. This hidden trail goes towards Acres Way.
I like this place. It is not extremely far from Queens so 50 min in traffic will not kill you and it is nice get away - kind of all in one as you get to hike, see nice old mansion plus rest by ocean. Why four stars? Because: there are falling apart buildings on the property with graffiti and garbage around them what is artistic but slightly scary. The beach is small and not crowded but it is a bay so stony, smelly and slightly dirty.Additionally there are signs that dogs are not allowed but dogs are everywhere- what makes me happy as a big dog lover.Nothing impressive but not bad for short drive escape.
This is a beautiful place for which we who live there pay plenty of taxes. However, it is extremely poorly maintained by the city. There are not enough garbage bins and and the trash is enormous and spread all over. The “visitors” (read not the ones who pay taxes to the city) have turned the trails next to the beach to a toilet with excrement deposited directly on these. Be ware if you risk to venture there; you may need a new pair of shoes after you step on one of these “mines”!Toilet paper, diapers, sanitary napkins, decomposed food, etc. abound! What a shame!Constructive suggestions?:1. Bring more garbage bins.2. Have these emptied every day.3. Bring at least 1 and yet better 2 bio-toilets.4. Institute fines for littering and enforce these strictly.5. If needed, restrict to use only by citizens of Glen Cove. Just like the beaches. By permit and even better by ticket. The proceeds can be used for cleaning and whatever installations are needed.
Beautiful grounds and fun trails. There are a couple of abandoned structures that are picturesque and great to explore, including an old greenhouse. Theres a short hike to the beach where you can sit by the water or fish off the jetty. Definitely recommend, especially if photography is a hobby of yours.
Very nice trails in spring, fall. Overgrown in summer as the county rarely comes through to cut back. Can walk through woods to get to Long island sound, or park by Holocaust museum and walk down paved path to water. Can be buggy if theres no breeze or when sun is starting to set.Could be a real gem if Nassau county would take better care of it.
Not as good as it used to be there was a film crew overtaking the areas and it was kind of annoying. Also most of the graffiti was gone that was once there a few years ago which was really amazing. Now theres just really bad graffiti over it. But all in all a good place to check out some local ruins from yesteryear
My favorite place to go on LI. My friends and I would spend countless hours exploring this park. There are so many trails which are off the beaten path, and you dont usually come across too many people. I recommend the streams for meditation. Also, a hidden pond if you take the right trail. Please never change, Welwyn!
A beautiful place turned into a garbage and public toilet. Thanx to the “picnic lovers”, who can’t pick up their own garbage and the city of Glen Cove, who seems to have no budget for an extra garbage bin and bio-toilet for the visitors, who came to enjoy the “beauties” of rare landscapes of Welwyn preserve. It is a big shame, how the city can’t maintain even a small part of whatever treasures were left to us by the Pratts.
Welwyn is a proper old growth forest. The only other place Ive been that remotely resembles welwyn is the joyce Kilmer memorial forest, DEEP in the smoky mountains of North Carolina. Welwyn is a national treasure, hands down. Try and find another tract of massive old growth tulip trees anywhere in north america thats open to the public or private for the matter.I gave welwyn 3 stars because its horribly managed. Numerous trees are spray painted by delinquents. Trails are not well maintained. Plastic bags choke numerous sections of the rare and otherwise pristine streams that traverse the forest. Ive even seen gasoline in the streams. Invasive species are allowed to flourish unchecked. Dogs run rampant. The list goes on.
The truth is a nice place if you want to be in touch with nature, it is very beautiful in summer when the trees are already full of leaves and you can better appreciate the forest where you can walk or just put a hammock and spend a good day resting in a very quiet place I recommend not to go alone because it is a large forest and they could be alone it is always good to take safety measures

2021-12-22Great place for escapism and relaxation. Only beach on Long Island (so far) that I love. Clear water, is rocky but manageable. There was beautiful graffiti on the walls but they keeping removing it. Always a pleasure coming here.

2022-03-28Shame they dont break the stars out=it would give them 3.5. nice enough for what it is, we went to the water & not to the abandoned buildings. since heard that side was much more interesting. one of the problems is that there is NO signage to direct you. large area with the Holocaust Museum in the middle. seems like a walking place, lot of hikers/walkers & dogs. next time perhaps we will try the other side & see the abandoned buildinns & the graffiti...

2021-05-11It’s a small little beach, good place to see the sunset. The beach has many rocks and even though it says no fishing there are many people fishing there. There’s an abandoned graffiti house and I haven’t been further out than that so I’m not sure about the walking trails. The trails usually lead out to the big road that leads to the beach. There is also a small little plaza like area that is beautiful with flowers and a small little stadium

2020-08-30Very beautiful preserve that you can tell is very old; it gives it that deep nature feel. Read up on the history too, very interesting. The trails were not very well maintained which is fine, but I have a problem when there are no trail markings. It was just by chance that I was able to find the abandoned greenhouse and the way back to my car. I came across a small stream, algae covered pond, interesting graffiti on trees, and a part of the Long Island Sound. Overall a very good preserve, just expect uneven and covered trails with overgrown brush.

2020-08-24Really nice trails and a beautiful, small pebble beach overlooking the LI Sound near the trail. Welwyn Preserve is worth your time, though pity the trail has some litter due to some unscrupulous visitors. Either way, the trails are nice and the views are worth the visit.Overall 10/10

2022-03-15If you enjoy the in-person experience of exploring historic buildings in a state of dangerous disrepair, covered in graffiti, and littered with trash due to government incompetence — Welwyn “Preserve” is for you.Leave the iPhone and take your best DSLR to capture the beauty of precious wetlands sprinkled with abandoned tires and beer bottles. But wait, there’s more! Enjoy time on a secluded beach composed of deteriorating asphalt and other mixed construction debris. Even if you’re a discerning beachgoer who demands to lay your blanket on only the finest chunks of concrete complete with rebar you won’t be disappointed. With an endless supply of single-use fast-food containers and micro plastics gently pulled in by the waves of Long Island sound, it’s time to forget about all those other disappointing seaside spots you used to frequent. If you’re nostalgic for the Gatsby era of Long Island’s Gold Coast, you won’t find it here.

2022-05-24Beautiful nature trails some cool abandoned buildings, a nice 1-2 hours worth of hiking between the two trails.
