WORD in other cities:
This is one of the best book stores in all of NYC. I recently visited for a speaking event for a new book that had just come out and they had drinks from a local bar and gave discounts for any purchase in the store. They also have great book recommendations and gifts. I highly recommend visiting if youre in the neighborhood or getting a gift card for a friend. Support local bookstores so Amazon doesnt destroy community book lovers safe spaces like WORD. This place is hip, approachable, and kid/family-friendly. Definitely a go-to spot in Greenpoint.
The staff here is amazing! I really enjoyed interacting with them and they gave some great personal recommendations. They also had a fun 80s pop Pandora playlist playing that really added to the vibe of the place. I highly recommend if you are looking for a great local bookstore.
Small but mighty neighborhood bookstore, something for every taste from fiction to NYC history to current events to graphic novels to stylish stationery. I love the staff recommends section, and if youve got a kid in your life (or just love great childrens book artwork), the childrens nook is worth a trip. COVID notes: excellent protocols here with sanitizer, plastic shields for check out desk, limited capacity and door kept open to air out the room. In non-COVID times, Word has excellent author readings -- so stay tuned for that!
The staff here is so lovely. I was in the shop the other day browsing books just killing time and one of the store employees came up to me with a book open to such a beautiful poem and said hey here’s a poem for you. Was really such a beautiful moment and I am so happy to patronize this Lovely little bookstore
Friendly staff, amazing selection and community events for all ages. I dont think you can ask for anything better from a local independent bookstore. I moved into the neighborhood in February and I cant resist stopping in the store whenever I am walking down Franklin.
Cute and cozy. Nice ambiance despite the crowded feel. Would probably have been a good experience but the cashier was gossiping with a friend and didnt lift her head to acknowledge us. We walked out without purchasing anything. No big deal, but really not what youre looking for when youre in a quaint little book store.
I work in a bookstore and still shop here. They’ve got all the bases covered, including kids books and paper goods. They also have a loyalty program which is great. Would love to see the singles message board thing brought back, it was cute. Support your local bookstore!
What a cute bookstore. Once I went in, it was like I stepped into a magical world. Been getting more into books lately, so I will definitely come back (even though its quite a trek for me). Thanks for hosting the book signing for Nathan Pyle for NYC Tips and Etiquette! I loved the space downstairs, super homey for events like that!
If only all neighborhoods were lucky enough to have a bookstore like this! Not a huge selection, but I almost always manage to find something here. They have staff recommendation notes around the store, and Ive found some interesting reads that way. They also have letterpress cards and other assorted items, like book cover t-shirts. Theres a kids section, too. They have a variety of book clubs, readings and events.
What a cute little bookstore. There aren’t many of those left anymore. 5 stars for cuteness. 2 stars for not being more organized on a cold and rainy night for a meet and greet for a celebrity who wrote a book. There must have been 500 fans there to meet MGG and the line moved in super slow motion. Other book signings I’ve been to the line actually moves. We waited 3 hours in the cold and eventually rain to meet this actor. Someone should have moved things along quicker. This event was not well planned or maybe this small cute bookstore didn’t know how to orchestrate such a crowd.
Just as other reviews have pointed out, this little gem of a bookstore on the edge of Greenpoint, Brooklyn is cozy, inviting, and staffed by courteous and friendly people who are knowledgable as well as able to interpret what the browser/ buyer is looking for.If you get a chance to get out to Franklin Street and Word, do stop in, and buy a book or two! I did, love poem. Collections for my wife for our anniversary!!
I will have to wait and see if i like my book purchases before i give it 5 stars (i went there yesterday for the first time), but i love this independent book store. tucked away in a very polish section of brooklyn, this little independent book store is incredibly inviting and just asks you to peruse their shelves of nicely curated selections. i get very confused/overstimulated in department-like stores (aka borders, barnes and noble, macys, etc.), so it is nice to come into a small shop with a good selection. and, the staff recommendations posted on the shelves totally dictated my purchases. also, if i like my staff selections, i am totally going to ask for the book a month club for christmas!
I came here first at the spur of the moment to secure my book for Allie Broshs signing of, Hyperbole and a Half.As soon as I saw that there would be only one signing in NY during her brief book tour, and that there were a limited amount of hardcovers printed, I set my alarm and called first thing in the morning to have a book held for me. Being an eternal pessimist, I was waiting to be told that either they were out of hardcovers or that they couldnt hold one for me. But the woman on the phone cheerfully took my name and put it on hold. Yay!Later in the day I went to pick it up. I was too paranoid to just leave it there until the next day, the day of the signing. The thing that shocked me was how small the space was. There must be some huge room in the back, right? Do they not realize how popular Allie Brosh is??? ...thought the woman who only discovered her 6 months ago...The next day I made a return trip with book in hand. Whoa. Theres a line down the block. I mean way down the block. Id read that the tickets for the talk were sold out but I figured that the bulk of the people would inside somewhere. Nope. The store is about as small as it looks and the hundred or so of us who showed up were camped out in the street. For. 6. Hours. No... Im not exaggerating. As I waited, I had lots of time to ponder about this choice of location for this event. Someones got the hook-up. This was a big get for an independent bookstore squirreled away in Greenpoint. Nice work, owner. Nice work. And thank you for the mini cupcakes. But you know what would have killed... coffee. I would have sold my first born for a cup of coffee. I really wish you had room in your store for coffee. And a chair. Just one comfy chair.I wanted to bemoan my fate for having the last letter-group ticket (A-I... of course Id be I) but once I found out that Allie was not only signing books but drawing in them, taking photos, putting on dinosaur costumes, and having meaningful conversations with her adoring fans, I pulled up my big girl panties and set in for the long haul. One Task Rabbit woman was just not up to the challenge and complained bitterly about missing the Red Sox playing in the World Series. Hey... priorities people.Being about the 5th to last person in line, and it being 1 AM, I was not at my sparkly best by the time I met Allie. But amazingly, she was. While we waited, we were asked to draw something in return for Allies drawing. I, in the spirit of Hyperbole and a Half made a drawing accompanied by text. Allie was so gracious about it. I really hope she kept it.With my book signed PARP! and photo taken for posterity, I stumbled my way home in the dark of night clutching my prize. It was worth it.

2022-05-29The best local bookstore - what every girl dreams of where she can shop when she grows up. So helpful, and orders come in so quickly. Also, huge fan of the tarot corner. I go here about once a month and its always a treat.

2021-01-01Love this bookstore. They have a great selection of books and the prices are reasonable. The staff is attentive and super helpful. Went in there the other day and aside from wearing masks, it felt like life was back to normal. This is the kind of small business we need to support.
