OMG this food was so good! Were new to NY so friends recommended Ya Yas and it did not disappoint. Friendly customer service, good portions for the price and everything was fresh. Ordered the Ribs, chicken, collard greens, potato salad and corn muffins. Reminded me of my grandmas cooking. Will definitely be back.
I have been going to this soul food restaurant when they were on Lafayette Street downtown Schenectady. I was extremely pleased when they moved to Broadway across the way from the lottery building. The food is delicious and the owners are beautiful people who serve the community and cook up down home soul food.
Three of us visited yesterday for the first time, but definitely wont be the last. The best skillet-fried chicken, fried catfish, collard greens, candied yams, and corn muffins we have ever had or ever will have. Huge portions; we all took home enough for a second meal. What a treasure!
I got the catfish and the daily special of oxtail, my girlfriend got the fried chicken. All meals came with collards and candied yams and then we got potato salad and macaroni salad as well. Everything was beyond fantastic, collards are among the best Ive ever tried, I dont even like yams but these were delicious. The oxtail fell off the bone and had a wonderful flavor as did the gravy it was served with. The cornbread, catfish, and chicken were all outstanding. Ive been wanting to eat here for years and finally got the opportunity to do so; it was all I hoped for and more. Extremely friendly service as well. Highly highly recommend ordering from here and I cant wait to go back.
Awesome food every time.2021: placed a catering order for fried wings and fried haddock. The food was ready promptly and I received a text message reminder to pick up the order. (I chose pick up as my delivery option)The food was absolutely amazing and the fish flew out of the pan (literally and figuratively). By the end of the afternoon everybody kept asking who is Ya Ya?The 20 minute drive from Albany to Schenectady is definitely worth it because the food is high-quality and made with love. For the time it saved me and the outcome of delicious food it was well worth the price. Ya Ya Worked so seamlessly with our order even though we were under the timeframe she usually likes for catering. I really appreciate the professional customer service and delicious food.
Excellent quality n quantity of food. I had ribs, fall of the bone n juicy, yams n collard greens corn muffin a d peach cobbler. Call in was kind inconvenient but food was fresh wife had catfish, maybe best Ive had, 2 large pieces. Excellent, light crisp batter n not greasy good job folks.
Got lunch from here for the first time. The fried chicken was very good, same for the cornbread muffin. The potato salad had a nice mustard fast to it. They were out of collard greens, so had to have the green beans. Looking forward to going again and trying the collard greens. I would definitely say to give this place a try.
Finally went to YA YA. I am so happy we did. The food was just super. we had the lunch special. My fish was great (they did not have cocktail sauce) next time Ill bring my own. My wife had the chicken, and was super happy. For $5 how can you beat chicken or fish and macaroni salad or potato salad and a drink. So we bought a half rack of ribs for supper. This is not baby ribs, it is full ribs. There was enough for 3 people and that is who we fed for supper. The bake macaroni is off the wall. This not a fancy place, just a place you can be comfortable and its clean.. Try it once and youll go back again and again. We will.....
Fantastic food and wonderful service. I had the lunch special, which was wonderful, but looking at the menu made me wish that I had waited until dinner so I could have had the Saturday night dinner special. Just another reason for me to come back again, and again, and again. The owner recommended the catfish, and my friend Vince and the haddock, but both of us could not have gone wrong with either choice. Vince is a regular, but it was my first time.I kept wondering if the fish fry was actually fried, it had such a light batter and seemed to be actually baked, except that it was juicy on the inside and lightly breaded on the out. The batter was such a gentle mix of herbs and spices that I didnt even bother to try to put my finger on what I was tasting, all I knew was I wasnt going to leave one bite left.Ill make my way back to Ya Yas House again and again. I cant wait for the weather to warm up a bit, but until then if you want to have some comfort food, in a welcoming and joyful environment, make your way to Ya Yas any day of the week.
So I really had high hopes but was disappointed. My first & last time going to the restaurant it was beautiful w a relaxing setting & very clean. The service was great. Ordered Baked fish Mac & cheese yams green beans & cornbread. The fish was bland but looked seasoned the texture was great thou . The Mac & cheese was bland & lacked that rich sharp cheddar cheese taste I was hoping for. Green beans super bland yams so dry along w the cornbread. It said soul food & I was hoping the food would be great due to prices being pretty decent and the restaurants nice setting but I won’t be going back unfortunately. Please add more seasoning make it unique.
YaYa’s always delivers service with a friendly smile. I stop for lunch on a bi-weekly basis.I’ve tried their catfish lunch special which comes with a large filet of fried catfish and a side of Mac or potato salad and the fish is always crispy and delicious.Their sweet chili wings are delicious as well, they are always crispy and flavorful. The restaurant itself has always been clean and the tables are always wiped down. I have only had pleasant experiences at this restaurant.I believe their chicken and fish are made to order so please arrive with the expectation that it may take 5-10 minutes to receive your food if you don’t order ahead.
First time I came here I came right as they were about to close. There seemed to be a mix up of my order and when I got home I had something else then I ordered. I called and spoke to Ya Ya and she said anytime I can come in she will correct it. Well I called many months later (the next time I was in downtown schenectady) I called to ask if I could still get this and without missing a beat she said yes of course. So I came and the food was to die for! Those candied yams good plus that fried chicken is good. I could have eaten 3 of the corn muffins they were perfect. Menu can change day to day so its best to call before you come in to see if they are having what you like for that day. Its on the expensive side but you do get what you pay for. Dinner portions were good.I will be stopping by again when I am passing through for sure.
This is definately the place to go if you want soul food in the Capital District. Lemon Pepper Chicken, amazing. Macaroni and cheese very sharp and cheesy. Macaroni salad very tasty. I loved the collard greens. Im already mentally planning my next visit. I did take out but would like to eat in at some point. The location is very inviting.
This place....... the food and Yaya herself were amazing. I had white meat chicken, cat fish, yams, collard greens, Mac and cheese, corn muffin, potatoes salad, carrot cake and a soda..... NOTHING DISAPPOINTED!!! Food was fresh, made to order and seasoned perfectly. I can’t say enough of how please I am with the food and the service. My new favorite spot.
Took My Sister and her husband to this place ( it was all our first time being there ) with intentions on having a great lunch🤦🏾 the menu was so limited to the point where we were practically forced to choose within a few options that was provided. We still chose to try it out payed almost 30 bucks for two orders of food just for it to turn out bland (no flavor at all ) the potato salad i wont even mention like overall I wil never go back to this place and I wont be bringing anyone else to this establishment, also the cashier was a bit rude when we asked questions about certain meals if I could give this place zero stars i would....
People were very friendly and polite. The place is very cozy and has a homey feel to it. Food was good but very pricey. More than half of the menu was not available at the time of my visit but all in all it was a good experience and people should give it a try if you like good southern food
Stop reading the review and just go. If you are deciding and dont know what to eat please do yourself a favor and come here. The atmosphere is extremely inviting and you feel like you are eating at someones home. The owners we met treated us with such southern hospitality that we felt transported. I got the fired chicken subing mash potatoes for mac and cheese with string beans, a corn muffin, and yams. My wife got the catfish with the same sides. We loved every bite and will definitely coming back. Almost everything was cooked to order and affordable. I dont know what else I need to say to convince you to go, but you might want to look at the dessert menu. They have specials that arent on the menu sometimes so definitely ask, but I will be back for that banana pudding.
I went to Ya Yas on my recent visit to Schenectady, and I waited an hour for food. They seemed very overwhelmed with the business end they could use a manager to run the day-to-day. I did however say to myself wow such a blessing for a small business owner to have people lined up waiting for your food. The flip side is the WAIT was dreadful people were furious, including me with the slow pace prep, and the owner seemed unappreciative of the support. She was rather rude, a customer inquired about an order in which she called in an hour ago. The owner replied she did not know the status of her order! as if it was no concern of hers this women had been waiting an hour for pickup!! They should stick to the passion for cooking food and allow trained restaurant staff to run the front end. But, all in all they will have a very lucrative business forecast. The food was delicious but small portions and over priced. Service gets zero stars they lacked the warmth you should feel going to a soul food spot. They need some business development training on how to run a fast growing business.
Ya Yas house is located in Schenectady right across from where you collect your big winnings from NY Lottery and behind the famous Proctors Theater. Its a real Southern cooked family style good food sit down restaurant run by a husband & wife team that serves up a different dish every day of the week, except Sunday, they give this day to the Lord and family. Was my first time there and was pleasantly surprised to find that it is not fast food, they take the time to cook your main course -- meat or fish and prepare the veggies etc thru-out the day according to lunch and dinner crowd, so everything is always served up fresh. I like that! I will be back, Thank you Ya Ya Pictures next time.
My husband and I tried dinner here after seeing Tamani Wooleys coverage on Spectrum News. We were oh so happy we did! The family members at Ya Yas are super friendly. We both had a huge and reasonably priced dinner of fried chicken with yams, green beans, corn bread, and our last sides were different. I had macaroni and cheese and my husband had rice. Each bite was better than the one before. Heaven on a plate. I know southern cooking well through my own southern roots and can say this is the real deal. The mac and cheese alone is to die for! Skip the fried dishes elsewhere and the overpriced restaurant meals and come to Ya Yas to be reminded of why home cooking is the best but even better when its as good as homemade but you dont have to do the dishes. Enjoy!
When we 1st walked in, we were greeted immediately with a smile. Inside was clean, quaint, and super cute. The menu is simple, which I enjoy, but they do have rotating specials and items that are only made certain days of the week. My mother ordered the $5 fried catfish lunch with potato salad, while I ordered the fried leg n thigh chicken dinner that comes with candied yams and a corn muffin. I went with the mac salad and collard greens as my sides but also ordered a side of mac n cheese. Both the fish and chicken were delicious, crispy on the outside but tender, hot, and juicy on the inside. The baked mac n cheese was awesomely cheesy and delicious as well. I thoroughly enjoyed the collard greens and candied yams which were cooked perfectly, not too soft but just tender enough to hold on to that delicious sauce (which I dipped my corn muffin in so the excess wouldnt go to waste lol). I tried the potato salad, which was very good but was not a fan of the mac salad. It was a bit too al dente for me. We decided to grab some peach cobbler to go (which was fantastic) but I cant wait to come back & try their new white chocolate & blueberry bread pudding, it sounds fabulous. Im also very intrigued by the oxtail special on saturday. So glad I found this place, keep up the good work!
Ya Yas House is divine! This was my first visit and Ill definitely be returning. We ordered a couple of sides and they were delicious. The place is super clean and the owners are so friendly and kind. Top 5 places in Schenectady for sure!! Eat at Ya Yas. Dont wait another second!!!
Great fried chicken and great collard greens. Went for dinner and there are only 2 options, a dinner meal where u can pick breast and wing or leg and thigh and you just get a bunch of sides with the meal. It was kind of frustrating because I just really wanted to try their fried chicken and I got a pretty small portion of chicken and 3 lbs. of sides I didnt really want.
Greatly enjoyed the oxtails which are the premier menu item. The oxtail dinner is $20 if you want to save, go for the chicken. Sweet potatoes, rice, potato salad...youll eat your fill just dont expect low carb. Im glad to see this authentic southern fare right next to our local cultural center (Proctors) Best bet for parking is garage across street which is free at night.
The family who runs this is very nice, but their definition of a sandwich is really just a huge bone-in piece of meat on top of a slice of bread. Its delicious chicken though, and I highly recommend it. I also recommend steering clear of their greens. Everything else is great. Would be even better if they had gravy.
The food under cooked , everything taste like it came straight from the can . The never even put in any effort into seasoning the food. The only thing there thats satisfied me was the chicken and corn muffin , that was great , actually taste like the best chicken Ive ever had in the city of Schenectady.
We found out about this gem on the news today. It smelled like grandmas house on a Sunday afternoon-delicious. Mark (Ya Yas son) greeted us, took our order and did a great job tending to our needs. We got a quick chance to see and talk to the star on the news, Ms YaYa, a lovely lady, as she brought out a hot dish. She is definitely a star in downtown Schenectady cooking up delicious, finger licking southern cuisine. YUMMY!
I eat there 3 times a week. Its not just that the food is A-MAZING, they cater to my nutritional needs which are complicated to say the least! Gluten free folks, keto folks, low carb folks, and everyone else....they do it right. Its a great place to eat homemade food. They treat you like family. If you have not gone worth the trip plus they cater. All around great experience. Thanks YaYas.
I had ribs. Mrs. Jenner had haddock. The ribs were delightful -- 3 huge meaty ribs drenched in mild sauce. The fish was crispy and fresh. The sides were sweet potato, macaroni salad, green beans and a corn meal muffin; the beans were disappointing -- I prefer them differently. The rest was tasty and satisfying. The restaurant is spotless -- and the kitchen is open and visible. Yaya and her friends are congenial. This is Scenectadys equivalent of Miss Maude and Miss Mamie; it is serious comfort food at a price that is attractive. I expect to come back.
Yayas please get back to cooking with love. I understand it can get hectic, but when I spend my money I want it to be worth it. I’ve ate here three times now, Mac n cheese needs more flavor, the cabbage also needs more flavor and I would think that for a soul food spot they would have red cabbage, not the gmo kind. However I must say, you guys have the best mashed potatoes I’ve ever tasted. Your fish is extra crispy and delicious but again, needs more seasoning.
Great location...just a stones throw from Proctors. Food is delicious. I, personally, would like a larger portion of candied yams. They were absolutely delicious. Two more suggestions -- please have other sweeteners, other than sugar, available, AND, please have other diet beverages besides diet coke and diet pepsi.

2022-04-28Service—above and beyond. Location—super convenient to a proctors show or the parking garage if you’re downtown for other purposes. But can I tell you about this food?!? Everything was so flavorful and plentiful. From the yams to the haddock and fried chicken and potato salad and collard greens made with turkey: it got to the point I was mad I couldn’t eat it all nor all at once.I will get dressed in real pants and leave my house for this food. ❤️❤️

2021-09-23I was craving soul food so my friend and I decided to grab some from Ya Yas. I ordered the catfish dinner which came with yams, collard greens and a corn muffin and I also ordered a side of macaroni and cheese. My friend ordered the fried chicken sandwich with sides of yams and macaroni and cheese. When we went to pick it up I asked about desserts. What I really wanted was pound cake but they didnt have any so I got the red velvet and my friend got the carrot cake.It was a good amount of food. I split mine up because I wanted to have leftovers. (Unfortunately I didnt think to take a photo until after I split it up). Everything I had has delicious and the catfish was a good size.My friend enjoyed the yams and macaroni and cheese. His complaint was that he ordered a sandwich however he got a breast with a wing attached and slices of bread. Im not sure If that was a mistake or what the sandwich is supposed to be like. He also said that it was a little dry. Im assuming because it was such a large piece but Im only speculating.*Masks are required. Restrooms are not open to the public and there is currently no indoor dining due to Covid-19. The place looked and felt very clean.Overall, it was a good experience and I will be returning in the future. Also, the man (who may be an owner, not sure) was very polite and welcoming. He gave off cousin vibes 🙂.

2022-04-19A disappointment. Fried fish tasted like freezer burn. Yams obviously came from a can. Cornbread was dry. Mac n cheese was bland. Peach cobbler was mostly syrup soup. The overall feel was that of a cafeteria at a school. This may be considered southern style quality in NY but it simply is not up to par. It hurts to say but I have to be honest.

2022-04-30Service was really good and so was the food. Especially the fish. I wish the wafers in the banana pudding were a bit softer though. But it was still very amazing, 10/10 will definitely return.

2021-01-19My husband we in the area we decided to drive out a little bit more to stop here before heading home. We didnt realize that it was restaurant week up here so the restaurant was pretty packed .Id have to say this is the closest southern food weve had so far and it was really good. The chicken thigh was delicious, along with the mac and cheese which was out of this world , the potato salad, macaroni salad and the banana pudding . All very delicious. The owner is very friendly , overall everyone there was very nice and outgoing. The prices were very affordable as well .Definitely come here and check this spot out . Only thing is good luck finding parking.

2022-06-19Food was great. Fried chicken was very crispy. Very friendly service. Quick dinner option for a pre show meal.
