One of the biggest things that stood out to me aside from the delicious pastries, is the AMAZING customer service.Making a customer feel so welcomed and acknowledged is a huge part of working in the food industry, and you WILL get that here. All the workers at this location are very sweet, caring, and they put a lot of love into the pastries and drinks that they make!Ive gotten multiple things here, the cupcakes, brownies, bubble tea, and the coffee. All of these items are BEYOND delicious and it made my tummy very happy.I live a few blocks away from Zais and I will definitely be coming here more often.Im beyond satisfied with the pastries and the service that is given here. Wonderful experience and I highly recommend this place!
After work today, I went and checked out Zai’s Dessertery which just opened their third location and their first in NYC. Today was their soft opening and grand opening is scheduled for this Saturday, Aug 21st. The bakery is small and cozy. They make really good use of the space and manage to squeeze in a couple of tables in the back and counter seating in the front. The store is slightly below street level but there is a ramp that leads down to the entrance. On the menu, they’ve got cookies, macarons, hot drinks, bubble teas, ice cream and bubble waffles.I ordered a mango slushie with boba and a small box of French macarons. I was pleasantly surprised by how tasty the mango slushie was. The drink was refreshing and had so much flavor. And the boba had a nice chewy, bouncy consistency. I thoroughly enjoyed this drink. But I thought it was a touch overpriced at $6.25 for a regular size. The macarons on the other hand, was priced well at $2.85 each (elsewhere they can go upwards to $4-6 each).I love macarons but I don’t get them too often. I decided to splurge today and get a pack of 6 (chocolate, lemon, rose and pistachio). The macarons here were soft, slightly chewy and with nice crunchy shells. The texture was spot on. Flavor wise, it was also good. The chocolate macaron was nice and chocolatey, and the lemon macaron had a zesty lemon flavor. I’m going to nitpick and say that I wished the pistachio was a little bit nuttier in flavor and the filling for the rose was a tad too thick; the taste was slightly overpowering. Luckily, there’s many other flavors to choose from. Also, luckily, I happen to work near by and can come back for more visits. There’s still so much more of the menu to discover.
Caveat: I only had cupcakes. Cant comment on other offerings. This is a very friendly place. I only bought cupcakes, but they were really bad. Stale, salty cake and frosting that looks and tastes like it started as Cool Whip. Their other products might be great: ice cream, elaborate desserts, cookies, but pass on the cupcakes.

2022-01-23First timer. When you walk in, youre instantly greeted by macarons. As you walk further in, youre able to see the menu with different drinks, many with boba, and some ice cream. Behind the bar there are blenders, mixers, and toppings.I came in for the macarons. Almost immediately, I noticed that the batter was bad. There were grains all over the macarons. There were multiple flavors and you could see grittiness in all of them. Instead of buying several, I purchased one - the raspberry. I also purchased a strawberry iced tea with boba. The cracks in the macaron that you see in the picture are because I put the bag in my pocket. I just provide that picture so you can see the grittiness of the batter up close. It was incredibly gummy and hard to get through. The flavor profile was tasty, but the product itself was unpleasant to eat.The ice tea was delicious. Flavorful. Not too sweet but sweet enough. Pleasantly tart. The boba were a bit gummy, but its been awhile since Ive had boba so maybe thats how it always is.There were two employees. One handled customer transactions and handed out the baked goods. The other employee put together all of the drinks, built all of the ice cream dishes, and Im sure also other similarly time intensive responsibilities. Several people were coming in, but there needed to be more coordination of product preparation to get people out in a timely manner and not have so many standing together in a very small space. I waited for 6 minutes on the drink and received the macaron almost immediately.I give the establishment a three. If macarons are a large part of your business - so much so that they are the predominant front-facing product you display - you have to knock that product out of the box. With macarons, if you under/over mix a batter, dont sift it well, or just mess it up in any way, throw it out and start again. You cant save it and then use it. Its never going to come out right. There needs to be more care put into quality control.

2021-10-31Mostly worth going for the “macaroon chip” ice cream which is kinda their thing. All ice cream is made by their partner location in Jersey and is great (and bigger scoops and cheaper prices than Van Leeuwens!). Decent seating with a few small tables in the back.

2021-08-30Zai’s has some of the best pastries you could ever get in New York. I had a box of Macarons and their amazing. I had Vanilla, Lemon, Chocolate, Birthday Cake, Nutella, and Red Velvet. I also got a Mango Iced Tea with Strawberry popping bubbles. It was so sweet and cold, perfect on a hot day. It was totally worth it. The staff is very sweet and are very quick with your order. I love this place and I will be coming back to try more things!

2021-09-12The Mac Chips Ice Cream was a nice potpourri of leftover macaroons inserted in a Vanilla Ice Cream base. There are other interesting items that I look forward to trying next time.

2022-07-30I got a chocolate peanut butter cupcake and some boba milk tea. It was really delicious! Normally frosting on cupcakes taste really gross and medicine-like, but this one tasted sweet & had a hint of peanut butter. The texture of the frosting was very smooth and fluffy. The boba milk tea has a moderate sweet and milky taste, the boba was chewy and nice! Plus the lady at the register was super kind, loved it 10/10.
