BODY SHAMING!?!: The food is good but my waitress wasnt that nice we finished a food and we already paid. my friends uncle was talking about getting ice cream and then the waitress said that they have fried ice cream and that they had banana and cheese cake fried ice cream I told her I dont like bananas or cheese cake and then she said thats probably why your a stick remind you Im 14 yrs old and I am a lil skinny but me and my friend were just in shock btw this happen in May
Sashimi. Thats all I have to say about Zen. All of the food Ive ever had from Zen has been spectacular, but if you are looking specifically for the areas best sashimi, look no further. The chefs at Zen are masters. The rolls are amazing, the Kani salad is the best in the area, the miso soup is even far above the rest. The bar atmosphere is lively, the mojitos are worth every penny. But if you want sashimi, this is the spot hands down.
I came here on a Friday night for a quick bite. There is a dining area, sushi bar and a full service bar. I sat at the full service bar and ordered a Sapporo and spicy tuna roll. Very good quality sushi! Definitely a busy place on a Friday night and they have some great happy hour specials! I was incredibly impressed with the bartenders service. He was very friendly and knowledgeable about the food and drinks. On my way to the bathroom I saw a sign about their endless sushi and mimosas on Sundays (brunch hours). I cant wait to come back for that!Edited: I went back on Sunday for the brunch with my mom and we both had a great time! You can get any 2 maki rolls at a time and they keep refilling the mimosas! Our greeter and server were fantastic. I highly recommend Zen.
My third visit in a week. This visit was different. Today it started off great, but went downhill quickly. The quality of the food is good, but the quality of the service needs improvement.I ordered the 3 maki roll special and wine they brought it out, the waiter dropped it off without a word an walked away. I need some soy sauce and a small plate. It took twenty minutes for the waiter to return.I tried to eat the food. Needless to say, I had lost my appetite due to the nonchalant and loose attitude of the waiter. I had such a lousy experience that I declined the takeaway box, and left 80% of my meal on the table. I asked for the check, I presented the cc immediately and the waiter walked away. Then after 10 minutes, I walked my info to the check in area to clear my bill.I will not repeat.
Awesome food and ambience, serving possibly one of the best fried rice dishes in the Capital region. Service is pretty awful though despite the very friendly staff; it took 45 mins to be served water and drinks, appetizers in 1.5 hours and entré in 2 hours. Taste of food made up for the otherwise disappointing experience.
Stopped in today for dinner and was disappointed, we got the Asparagus Shrimp and chicken hibachi and the chicken was very dry ( tasted old ) and the shrimp dish was all noodles, a few pieces of shrimp and a stalk of asparagus. Even were charged $1.50 for tea. Very over priced for the food you get. Service was average. Won’t be back.
I just walked into Zen restaurant and i must say was one of the most discriminating and uncomfortable act of service Ive ever experienced. I walked in with my friend and had to wait more than 10 minutes to be seated when the restaurant wasnt even busy. I literally watched a waiter walk pass me and not make eye contact or anything. As me and my friend stood there even the bartenders watch us and didnt even ask could someone help us or anything!! Im very disturbed at this unprofessionalism !!!
I’d like to think of Zen as my go to place but tonight man...I went in to pick up my order and literally got the run around on an item on my order. I got a crab roll about 3 maybe 4 weeks ago and got extra crab on top, now there was a different chef there and he got really argumentative with me and then I said “can you just put it inside” and he said “no we don’t do that”. I’m not sure if he didn’t understand what I asked but he definitely was not listening. Then I waited and waited to get and pay for my order but stood there, frustrated at this chef. He comes out with my order, so now my order was complete and no way of correcting it so I’m just getting rudely corrected by this guy waiting for food that was already done. The food was good, I ordered 2 shrimp tempura rolls and I’m pretty sure it was only one. So I’m paying extra money for a smaller roll than if I were to dine in. I’m not really happy with my service tonight which is unfortunate.
I’ve been going to Zen on and off for years now.For the most part the food is good but DONT order out. They’re always so reluctant to take your order and they skimp to-go orders SO BAD. I don’t even have half a salad to eat. I also ordered extra ginger and didn’t get that either. Packed both our sushi rolls in one package that didn’t receive any ginger either.Every single time I have ordered out from Zen they have lowered their standards immensely and I’m disappointed every single time. I don’t like to complain because I hope the next time will be better but spending my money on a dinner to enjoy, it should be full serving sizes and done correctly. If I didn’t like 20 minutes away I’d go back.
Went out to this restaurant for lunch and had their duck and 2 roll lunch special. The Sushi was slightly below average and I didnt think it was anything better than supermarket sushi. The duck was partly dried and seemed like it was deep fried. Service was average, but nothing to make up for the bad food.
The waiter was kind and knowledgeable about the menu items. However, the service was very slow, the place was jam packed. While we understand that there was a concert on State Street and a lot of pedestrians in the area, the manager and/or owner should have made sure to staff the restaurant to meet the projected volume of diners. There was a sign saying that there was a drink special that Friday BOGO on mojitos, and the owner wouldnt honor it that day (per the staff at the restaurant.) Do either take the sign down, make a sign to cover it or update your website. If its posted, youre supposed to honor it.
Let me say first that the food was great. You will not be disappointed with your food. However, the atmosphere is arguably the most important single aspect of a guests dining experience. There were 5 or 6 extremely intoxicated individuals at the bar yelling and swearing and just generally being douchey. I do not know if they were being continually served however to my knowledge not a word was said to them nor were they cut off. We asked for our food to go at first, however our waitress offered to move us to a separate dining room. We accepted and ate our food in peace. However, It was extremely disappointing to me, being in the hospitality and food service industry myself, that the management of this place allowed these 5 or 6 people to disrupt the entire restaurant. Ill be going to Mr. Wasabi for my next sushi meal.
As a lover of sushi, I believe exquisite cuisine deserves recognition. Zen makes the best sushi I have ever had. Their special rolls will knock your socks off and so will their traditional ones! My favorite place to get a spicy tuna roll. Cost-effecient + delicious. A true delight.
Went for the Sunday brunch special, all you can eat sushi rolls and mimosas, all for $20! The sushi was excellent quality, especially for all you can eat, and everything was made to order rather than buffet style. The fish was fresh and well portioned, with the perfect amount of rice used per roll (they dont try to fill you up quick with heavy rice rolls!). My husband is not a huge fan of sushi and got Thai red curry instead- the portion was enormous! Also highly recommend the chicken tom yum soup, which is probably one of the most flavorful tom yum soups Ive tried in the area so far.
Zen is so many different things. A jumping place at night that is as close to feeling like The City as you will get in the capital region. Then there is the fine food that will not let you down. Then there is the nice side room for events where you will be showered with a truly amazing amount of sushi. Tell Andy I said hi. Great place for fun and food.
Poor from the get-go.The moment we walked in and the hostess ignored us, I should have known better. The restaurant was mostly empty, yet they could only seat us next to the door. We sat at the bar to be away from the draft. We ordered pineapple fried rice and Thai basil chicken. The fried rice didn’t come in a pineapple- I’ve never seen that before- and had only five shrimp. It tasted a lot like not much. Very unflavorful. The basil chicken was just awful: so salty I literally couldn’t eat it. We sent that one back, left some of the fried rice dish and left.I won’t go back. Not recommended.
Customer service was horrible. We had a reservation for 6 oclock, were told they had no table for us, someone made a mistake. The so called manager, had no options for us. There was total chaos , no organization what so ever. Literally told us we can leave if you dont like it. We asked for another manager a couple times and he ignored us and dissapeared. So much for Restaurant week, trying out new places. This one was a bust!!
Im only leaving this review in the hopes that management sees it and terminates the bartender on duty today; I believe his name is Justin (thats what the service kiosk said...which he repeatedly failed to sign into). He was so under the influence that after 25min we left because we had no confidence in him actually entering our food order. We ordered water, which he promptly delivered to another party beside us. And later apologized for not being able get us our mimosas (that we didnt order) because he couldnt find a pitcher. Really?
I love love love Zens but this time around I felt that my waitress was in a rush, she was dismissive of my fiance, she constantly reached over our food to collect dishes, while taking our order she turned around to the next table and started to take their order. We still tipped her even though she wasnt attentive. Service needs improvement.
Almost always good food, until today I got the steak hibachi that I ordered med rare it came well done a very tough. The waitress sent it back and the next one was more well done . I didnt eat it, she offered me chocolate cake, I declined as I was still hungry for food. When she brought the bill she charged me for my meal. After owning two restaurants for almost 20 years I never charged anyone for food that wasnt good or cook correctly. Im surprised that they still are in business if the do this to all the customers.
My party and I went to Zen for a birthday party, so we book in advance. While it wasnt very packed when we first arrived, by the time we were digging into some cake the restaurant was nearly full. While it wasnt rowdy, it was pretty loud, especially considering a good portion of the restaurant was partaking in some form of alcoholic beverage. The parking is pretty tight though, so you might very well end up walking a decent distance to the restaurant. Oh, and since this is a business-formal establishment, leave the kids at home. Its a pretty adult atmosphere inside, respectable, but adult. The ambience inside Zen is one of dimly lit tables, even into the evening and night, the real candles on each table becoming the brightest thing around you. Decor-wise its a mix of Asian cultures, with statues from Japan, China, and Taiwan. I will mention that one person in my part actually hurt themselves while scooting across the booth to move in, bashing the back of their head against a low hanging shelf lined with smooth stones. It was pretty bad, and while she did calm down eventually, I would highly recommend the restaurant remove or raise the shelf to avoid similar accidents. Had she hit her head any harder, Im certain she would have had a concussion.Aside from that, the rest of the evening went rather well. The menu is a mix of Thai and Japanese food, with plenty of variations for veggie and meat lovers. Prices are surprisingly low for the quality of food you get, though the portions are within the range of what youd expect. My party partook in some ginger salads, miso and clear soup, bourbon sesame chicken wings, red curry, and the chicken hibachi with fried rice and veggies. The salad we found to be under dressed, but a perfect size. The soup we had no qualms about, but the wings, while sweet and savory, didnt have a very strong flavor. The curry was exceptionally spicy, with a nice burn that builds up the more you eat. And as for the chicken hibachi, while the chicken paired perfectly with the white sauce and the rice was cooked just the way I like it, the veggies were a little on the wet side. Our waitress Jing was pretty attentive, and she even brought out warm towels for us to wipe our hands after digging into the wings.Overall Zen is a good place to have a professional or formal dinner, but not a place for kids. It features a wide variety of Asian inspired cuisine, all for a price tag below what one might expect. Try to book for an earlier meal if you want to avoid the crowd and noise, and if you have bad night vision you should think of bringing a small pocket light.
Im not really sure where to really classify this modern store-front restaurant in the middle of downtown Schenectady. Despite claims on their website, I am a little confused. I am pretty sure they are really stretching what fusion means: big plastic menus for the food-drink selections alongside cloth napkins / packaged waribashi with forks / BOGO mojitos with sake cocktails / and multiple brands of gluten-free soy sauces. But some of the Sunday Funday! crowd that those choices encourage were just beginning to make themselves known over at the regular alcohol bar, as I finished an early dinner in the nearly empty restaurant area.As I walked in, the quick and efficient host/server greeted and escorted me to a seat at the cramped 8-seat sushi bar. Not surprising for this fusion atmosphere, I was able to select only one type of hot tea, but ten types of mojitos were available, from whatever part of Zen Asia that rum and limes come from.I was presented (gratis) with a simple soup and tea, most likely because of the number of relative expensive selections I had already made. I watched the two chefs quickly prepare my main, with only one chef a tiny bit distracted by the March Madness on the muted television behind him.Apparently they were not distracted at all, as they presented a simple elegant plating, although unadorned, of two rolls and a handful of nigiri. The maki were the weaker of the selections, with a spicy salmon that was dry, bland and not spicy at all. The eel cucumber should probably be renamed cucumber eel, with so little eel that it was bordering upon becoming a vegetarian roll. The nigiri were much better, although the rice itself was only very lightly seasoned, a bit less than I prefer. The suzuki and hamachi were both excellent, with firm fresh taste - very good, even if the firm texture indicated a lower fat content, that I had initially hoped, apparently from a non-belly cut. The unagi was thankfully not drowned in sauce. The ikura had that tiny little pop you expect from fresh roe, and I believe even the chilled tamago tasted as if it was cooked this morning. My only demerit would be because of a lack of wasabi beneath each piece of fish atop the rice - but that is a step very few Capital Region restaurants provide.I most likely will return soon, but I think Ill do my best to try to avoid the crowded bar hours.2019 03 24.
So I came to Zen twice both times I walked through the door and waitresses seem to be oblivious to the fact that they may have to seat me. The drink are OK, food is borderline OK. Friday nights are the worst horrible service. Youll get better service sitting at the bar.
Stopped in for dinner because we were staying nearby.. Heard great things about the place... thats as far as it went though. The beer is a joke.. If Im going to pay $6 for a beer and they bring it in a can, its unacceptable. Then I ask for a glass for the beer and the glass isnt even chilled! Top that off the special for the night was over cooked and flavorless! Their version of hibachi was more like a TV dinner from the frozen food section of Walmart! Never going there again, and would recommend going somewhere else!
Lunch, Early Evening or Late Night ...Zen is perfectly transformative and executes its concept as an Asian fusion lounge without flaw. Their food is fresh, sourced rapidly and if someone didnt tell you, it would be obvious from the clean bright flavors. Lunch options are great and there are quick pick menus for various samplers and bento boxes. Their miso soup is spot-on and delicious every time and automatically becomes part of any meal I order. Or you can order any kind of sushi roll, including ther slightly more costly but rewarding and satisfying Signature Rolls. You could even have a nice business meeting here, given the low, chilled music in the background. There is plenty of table seating and views of the bustle and activity of downtown State Street. The bar is equally a great place to sit as the bar is translucent and backlit with its subtle changes in color...it adds elegance and unique illumination to the room. You can easily get in and out for a quick lunch. If your order includes a few picks from the signature sushi roll menu, the chefs go to town in building a beautiful presentation platter which will catch the attention of other patrons as you enjoy its looks and taste!Their bar and cocktails are terrific and very reasonably priced. Mojitos are a specialty, but any drink they make tastes wonderful. For dinner time and late evening, the place can pack a bit, but not unreasonably. The patrons Zen attracts are mostly young and middle aged, and generally good natured folks. This is a nice stop before or after a show at Proctors. It is managed very well and you can easily tell that Zens owner is deeply passionate about every detail of Zens operations. Every waiter, chef, server and bar tender will go out of their way to make sure you are happy there.
Food was good, BUT the service was horrible. The staff was very slow, undeserving so, no one ever asked how things were or if anyone needed anything else. I will never go back, there are so many other fine restaurants in Schenectady why support one that doesnt really care about YOU?
Had a horrible experience. Waitress Jing was very rude. Ordered my drinks and she didnt bring it until after I got my salad and food. Then asked her for a metal spoon, she points at the white spoon that comes with the rice and says Theres a spoon right there. After we were getting up to leave, she came running up to us and started yelling my service wasnt enough for you as she was checking her tips. She yelled and walked away with an attitude. I usually go to Zen often but after this experience, its no.

2022-02-16I had a great experience. Our waitress was so nice.If youre a cocktail kinda gal I would suggest a Cosmopolitan, then the Apple-tini, then the Flirt-tini, and last try Lemon Drop! I had all four and it was delish! For my main dish I ordered the classic Sesame Chicken with Brown Rice. It also came with a serving of broccoli. After having this you wont want to eat at your classic neighborhood chinese spot. I definitely will visit again.

2022-07-10Came here for dinner on a whim while on a road trip, and ended up having one of the best sushi dinners Ive had in a long time. Every plate was quite attractively plated and tasted great. It also helped that the waitress was kind and was very patient with any questions we had. My friend and I split two specialty rolls, which was enough food for us. I recommend the Tuna Lover, as it had a nice combination of crunchy and smooth texture wise, and the fish itself was good.

2022-03-20A bit on the pricey side, but the food was good for the most part. A really nice atmosphere for a date night. All the staff we interacted with were friendly and accommodating. Asian food and decor mixed with pop music and laid back service. Asian Fusion is a very accurate description.

2022-06-29I stopped by Zen for a few drinks last Friday with 7 other friends. The restaurant was busy but the waitress said she could get us seated outside. We waited for 5 minutes or so to be seated which was no problem. Then probably another 10 minutes to get a drink menu. The waitress was very sweet and apologized for the wait. She brought us waters and took our drink order. At this point we had been there almost a half hour and 2 people of our party had to leave. I felt bad for the waitress because she again apologized the drinks were taking so long. After waiting another 45 minutes with still no drinks we had to leave. It was very disappointing. I would much rather have been turned down right from the start so that we could have done somewhere else. I understand when a place is busy and can definitely be patient but almost an hour and a half just for drinks is a bit ridiculous, I could only imagine how long we would be waiting for our food.

2022-06-22I should have walked out after they sat my family and I at a dirty table. The beer was the best part and that took 15mins. The app was cold when we finally got it and there was a hair on my salad. Our food got to the table we all took a few bites and asked for the check. The portions and quality of food are not worth the money. We came in hungry and left feeling ill. But at least the waitress took ten percent off.

2022-06-28I’ve been here before and had a great time but recently had a horrible experience. The waitress was not attentive, my food had a hair in it (i sent it back), the drinks came out right after we finished eating (even tho we ordered it first), and they didn’t give us enough glasses so one of my friends drank out of the pitcher.

2022-05-07Good food. Bad service. We ordered starters then out meal and drinks. We got tje food forst. The drinks 10 min later. And waiting almost an hr for the starters to come. And best of all. They forgot to bring the kids drink.
