This is a great place to go if you like German bier, and food. There arent many places left that havent filled their taps with craft IPAs, which has gotten old. So if you want high quality German bier, this is the place to get it. And the owners and wait staff are nice people too.
Im pretty sad that this place is closing at the end of the month (February 2020) because this is possibly the best German spot in the city. The food is incredible (hot tip: get the potato pancake) and is so satisfying. The beer is simple, German fare but it absolutely gets the job done. Its not a huge place so it gets pretty crowded at peak times but it is worth it. I hope the owners find a new location because my experience here was perfect.
I’m really bummed to hear that this place is closing. I went there for the first time recently and was pretty into the whole experience. First, the atmosphere is pretty authentic. It’s a tiny place but really gives that Bavarian beer hall vibe. There are a lot of these kinds of places in the city, but this one isn’t trying to be super trendy, it’s just giving you the classics. All the typical German fare can be had here from many different wursts to schnitzels to a delicious pork shoulder. I have to come back soon if it truly is closing down!
Awesome German food! Best in town!My wife lived in Munich, and this place is the closest authentic Bavarian food we have found in New York City. They offer a wonderful variety of delicious classic dishes like wiener schnitzel and bratwurst, as well as less well-known but equally good choices like schweinebraten and weisswurst with amazing desserts like kaiserschmarrn. And they have a terrific selection of German beers, of course.Adding to the atmosphere, much of the staff speak German, and are very friendly and helpful.Only two downsides: The inside is small and not very easy to navigate. In summer they open up outside tables, which makes it easier. And if you want a quiet meal, you have to pick the time carefully. Weekends can be raucous and fun, especially if theres an important soccer match on TV.Even so, great food, great beer, lots of fun, and delicious sausages. What else do you need?
Love, love, love this place! Ive been here for Oktoberfest, Karneval, and just on a random weekend and each time Ive had a blast! Not only is there a great selection of German beers (always get a stein), the prices are pretty decent considering. The food is also great and service is friendly yet efficient. Depending on the day/event, it can be pretty packed, but it just adds to the atmosphere and fun times, especially when the house band gets everyone to sing along.Just remember that its cash only there.
Nice selection of German beers that you dont see too often with reasonable prices. Had the schnitzel which was tasty. Potato salad was good but would be have nice to have warmer style you often get in Germany. Pretzels were average. One star demerit for being cash only in 2015.
The food was excellent, one of the best sausage plates that Ive had. The downside was that they do not except credit cards (cash only) and they had a raucous group of patrons and employees playing Foosball in an extremely loud and annoying manner. Great food and service but the Foosball crowd dampened the evening.
I was there for a Sunday brunch. The food was good, classic German, but not great. What aggravated me was when we got the check and found out it is cash only. Our server simply told us we should have seen it on the menu and there is an ATM inside. I can understand not wanting to take cards for a very small business but not if you also have an ATM. The ATM fees were ridiculously high. This is nothing more than a lazy and greedy way to make more money. There is not part of me needing to go an get the money that makes it faster or easier.
Zum Schneider is fantastic. Its one of my favorite spots in the city to sit and spend a nice sunny afternoon, to sit and enjoy great German bites and beers as the sun sets and Alphabet City comes alive. The staff is always sweet, and everything is served with care. Often youll find that everyone around you is speaking a different language. This is not a basic crowd, but an eclectic mix of people who all share great taste in food, beer, and atmosphere.
When you want German experience and solid German beer, with a seasonal selection mind you, this is a place to visit. I stopped in for some Karneval celebrations and libations. It did not disappoint. The beer was fresh and crisp and the environment was especially eclectic (think Oktoberfest meets Halloween). This place raises everyones spirits and the open environment means all are welcomed and all are friends. Definitely worth a visit.
I celebrated my PhD yesterday in this gorgeous place. I am glad to say that we enjoyed a terrific evening and the place was undoubtedly one of the reasons for this fruitful evening. The team participated in a graceful style, the cooking was yummy and my guests were very happy. We shall absolutely return for more celebrations. Thank you very much.
I adore this place! They have decent dishes, they have a nice menu, The chief cook in that restaurant is a real authority in the kitchen, I like a lot trying all their dishes. The dishes are always fresh, the attitude towards the clients is good. I go often to this place and I not even once was unsatisfied. Highly recommended.
Came here for a birthday party with a group. Ordered the big platter to share and a few extra plates and everything was great. Honestly couldnt tell you if the food was as good as I think it was, because their steins were huge and the beer was delicious. Overall it was a great experience!
The interior feels like a beer garden without being exposed to the elements and they have a good selection of beer, with delicious wheat beers. I havent eaten much here beyond a pretzel but it was really good. They also offer outdoor seating, which is great, unless youre there to watch a football/soccer game.Cash only, so stock up as prices arent low.
This is the best bar in NYC that Ive found for a real Bavarian experience. They have a better selection of beer than youd expect even from a real German hall with a wide range to choose from. The food is also truly authentically German. The only downside at Zum Schneider is how crowded it can get sometimes, especially on nice days during the Fall on weekends, but theres a reason for it to be crowded, and that can be fun on its own.
I love this place. The food is wonderful, and the beer selection is fantastic. Unfortunately, last time we arrived on an event day, so the place was full of frat boys and girls wearing Christmas lights and ornaments who apparently didnt have enough Santacon the weekend before. We were told there wouldnt be any table space for 6 hours. What a shame.
After countless burgers and steaks we found this place during a weekend trip to NYC because we (2 Germans) longed for german environment after being for 2 months in the US for business. We enjoyed the German wheat beer and a small german dish such as german sausages with Sauerkraut and a Schnitzel. To be honest the food was ok and gives you an idea about how german food can taste like but cannot really be compared to authentic food and dishes in Germany. The more we enjoyed the atmosphere of the sympathic german owner, his staff and hospitality of this small german jewel far away from home. The Bavarian background music is definitely typical German but not really what people listen to at home. Conclusion: Would come again and is definitely a visit worth!
I adore the lower east side restaurant but just arrived home from Zum Kaboom. A brilliant concept, band and setting - but what a complete cluster fcuk.Hundreds of folks paid their $25 entrance fee expecting a well run service oriented outing reminiscent of their restaurants. Instead, outrageously long lines for anything was the norm. One server managing the food, two for beer [only a pair of stations available] ruined an otherwise fantastic evening.Either the owner is incredibly cheap refusing to plan/pay for adequate staff, or hes clueless. It felt more like an overwhelmed girl scout event with staff looking at each other wondering what to do.Judging from the number of times he filled his own cup without any regard for the line of 50 or more waiting impatiently, I have to assume he was just oblivious. It was such a waste of an incredible opportunity, and it was all so preventable. So incredibly disappointing from such an otherwise fine operation.
Really fantastic place. I ordered the spätzle dinner plate and it was amazing. They were all different sizes which means it was made from fresh dough and not some dried pasta form. My husband ordered the Scheinehaxe (they only serve it on the weekends and is not listed on the menu) and it was also delicious. We hadnt seen this since our trip to Germany and it was on par. We ordered the apfel strudal for dessert and it was (you guessed it!) Delicious! They only take cash but have an atm inside. They were very friendly and casual. They asked if we just wanted some beers or a meal too and they asked us where we wanted to sit as there were a few empty tables. It was nice picking a small table in the nook corner by the window. The hostess and our waiter were very nice and professional and everything came out in good time and was yummy. Definitely recommend this place for German food/experience.
The staff were friendly and the place was convenient, but it was a very unpleasant surprise that the restaurant only accepts cash, despite being able to organise an ATM.The payment was made even more difficult by the decision to print the bill in German (the menu was in English). The lighting seemed like an office; and the décor included random inexplicable trophies. The food was fine.
Its a shame Zum couldnt get their lease renewed after 20 years on their Avenue C outpust. The kitchen closes for good Feb 16, so theres still time for the pretzels, weisswurst, pickle platter, potato pancakes, all the delicious things that make Zum great. And thats without the beer list!Credit Zum Schneider for the arrival of Andechs in New York; the Vollbier (lager) is constantly on tap -- though if youre new to their Doppelbock, ten bucks for a half liter is a bargain -- and Schneider Weisse, Hofbrau, sometimes Jever, and a host of other German breweries will still be around until the end of February.Seating is cramped inside and along the sidewalk, as always. There are half a dozen seats at the bustling little bar in the back of the space, and though theres table service, you might have better luck walking to the bar for your beers. Be prepared to wait for a seat as tourists, families, and large groups of friends enjoy Zum for the last times. Be aware, its (still) cash-only.
Food is great. Beer is delicious. Atmosphere is the most authentic of the other places around the city. It can get crowded but thats the price you pay for a good place right? I love the kaespatzle with bacon and the pork shank. The only negative I have to say is, its all cash and I firmly believe all cash places should be better priced than places accepting credit cards and it is just a touch pricey. Nevertheless, Zum is my go to beer garden in Manhattan.
It’s cash only, I repeat it’s cash only. For two people expect to fork out least 40$ each if you’re having a main course, and several beers. The food is okay -my schnitzel was a little try, through they have very large portions. I think you come here more for the outdoor seating and German beer.
I told my friends about this restaurant with my warmest recommendations. I go their often. This recommendation is always successful. The the cooking is flavorable and the team is attentive and cooperative. Whenever we go to this place we enjoy a pleasant evening. I recommend this place with pleasure.
This was my first experience with German food and I must say, it set the bar high. Not only was the food great but the atmosphere made this place even better. If I could, I would take of 1/2 a star because its cash-only and the prices are pretty steep. It was worth it though.I ordered a Wiener Schnitzel for $20 and a liter of beer which was around another $15. Im very proud of myself for finishing both because not only was the food delicious but the portions were huge. I would definitely say that this meal was worth the money. The restaurant was fairly small and got busier as the night progressed. The seating is long tables which different parties share, i was so-so about that idea but it may be considered more authentic. After trying Zum Schneider, Ive been to a few more German spots in NYC and this one takes the cake. There was something about it that the other two just couldnt beat. Also, Ill add that if youre not in the mood for a meal, this is a great place to come for a few beers with friends.I had a great time here and it wasnt just because of the food. Everyone was enjoying themselves and you couldnt help but have a great time. I cant wait to go back!
Ahh, the beginning of Oktoberfest. People, including myself, love a good reason to drink giant steins of beer and indulge in giant soft pretzels. We helped kicked off the German celebrations this weekend at a biergarten I have yet to been to. Zum Schneider in the east village is probably one of the greatest attractions on Avenue C. Their blue and white outdoor umbrellas and flags are very attractive and make the place east to spot.We walked in and our friends had already started filling up a long picnic style table. I was a little disappointed to see the place so empty. They claimed that it would start getting busy around 3 or 4pm (it was around 1:30pm now), so Id be interested to go back at that time next weekend and check it out.The waitress was there ready to take our order the second we sat down. The giant steins were only $12 each (!!!) so of course we ordered those. They had a huge beer selection with descriptions of how each one tastes. We also ordered some soft pretzels but were unimpressed because they were very small, smaller then the ones you would get at a baseball game. The other downsides are they dont do separate checks which was hard since I was leaving early and are cash only.I am curious to come back and check out what this place looks like when its crowded!
Probably the best of the newer authentic German restuarants in NYC. Great atmosphere, great food. I need not have to say great beer. All this in a part of Manhattan that was a virtual no-mans land not too long ago. I cannot say enough good things about Zum Schneider and its creator, Sylvester Schneider.
Excellent German restaurant and today there was a Christmas feast with roasted goose, potato dumpling and a 5+ selection of salads tastings (radish, cucumber, regular salad, coleslaw, potato salad). The dessert was a vanilla putting with stewed fruits (raspberry, blueberry, strawberry).Ive never been here before.
Nice taste of Germany - its fairly authentic, and there are actually a lot of Germans who go here so you can hear people speaking in German. It can be a little cramped and the vegetarian options are very limited, which is understandable for the venue but made it less appealing to me, but its still a great spot especially if you just want to have a beer.
Ive still yet to try the food here, but I will say... (a) excellent beer selection, so I hear (not my thing) (b) decent champagne, that was easy to obtain even in a sea of patrons for NYE (c) fabulous music continually through the night, even including (arrrr) some German drinking songs. Good times... very good times. Even when we were gently nudged out the door 30 minutes past closing time. And next time... FOOD!
Not for NYers. I dined here last Sunday. The food was ok, service was sad and the ambiance descent. First, the server wouldnt allow us to close the door when she sat us by the entrance because its too hot in the kitchen even though it was a chilly autumn eve outside. My husband is a chef, and he agrees its hot in the kitchen but that is NYC kitchen life... You dont make the setting uncomfortable for guests so the kitchen staff, who would have no work if not for the guests, can be more comfortable. I let that go being as how I was in a bar and not a 5 star restaurant but THEN when we got the check, the server tried to trick us into paying for something we didnt order. After I specifically pointed out the dish on the menu, she thought I meant the special which is posted on a board by the bar.... even though the dishs explanation on the menu resembled EXACTLY what we had been served... After about 5 minutes and her chatting with her colleagues, when she realized the excess money was going to come out of her tip anyway, she changed it and apologized. Had high hopes. The pork shoulder was overly dry, obviously had been cooked and sitting there for a while. Barely any sauce... the bratwurst was descent but all else failed. Ive travelled to Berlin, Munich on several occasions for work and even though I didnt expect that level of cuisine, I have been to other german places in the city and this is definitely the worst of them. Raadegast Hall and Biergarten still the best so far. PS: they only take CASH because instead of paying a 1.9% cc commission theyd rather take that amount from you by obligating you to use their ATM because the nearest bank is 5 blocks away. NICE try guys... make money however you can, right?! Seriously a tourist trap! Not going back, thats for sure!
Although I have not been here for 19 years, I continue to recommend it to any friends moving to or just visiting NYC. The weekend brunch is authentic German fare and goes lovely with a giant stein of BIER! Add Live Musik, Fußball, and Freunden?!?! ❤ this place. yeah, its cash only, but youll manage without plastic for one meal.
The true bavarian restaurant in NY. Best traditional bavarian food and great beer. And the most lovely and welcoming people. We were looking for a place to eat on Thanksgiving and were invited by the owner and his staff to their Thanksgiving dinner. As a German visiting NY regularly, I only can reccomend this place.
This restaurant is dirty. We did not enjoy seeing the cock roach run around on the floor. The staff is rude and dressed as if they have been working in a coal mine. Our rude server kicked us off of our table because she was saving it for her usual clients that come in and drink. We moved, only to be waited on by another male server that was somewhat better in personality, but having little knowledge that we had already eaten, he seemed to bother us way to much as we finished our large drinks. My opinion is that this restaurant is for the individual who would like to drink a lot of beer and does not care about cleanliness, good service or good food. Rolfs is the best German restaurant you will find in New York City, the food, service and atmosphere at Rolfs is outstanding...FYI...
Good Bavarian food, thats all you are going to get, Im personally not a fan of German food or Bavarian, but do come for the beer. I prefer Frankfurt and Trier food from Rhineland Palatine and Hessan. I see people complaining about the food from Munich and Berlin (where most tourist goes) personally Munich and Berlin are too much of a tourist destination. The wine list is really good as well. The food is the same as munich for me, which doesnt account to much, and Berlin is more famous for their potatoes and international cuisine (not germany) Good staff and events. Really good people to know, staff is german speaking
I cant speak for the food, but I can speak for the beer! I went to Oktoberfest in Munich (Munchen!) a few years back, and this place brought back some lovely drunken memories. The beer is pretty fantastic, although I have to warn that some of it is stronger than your average beer. It can sneak up on you. It sure sneaked up on me, anyway, as most of the times Ive been to this place Ive ended up staying until everybody was kicked out at closing time. Other things that brought back Oktoberfest memories: Zum Schneiders the kind of bar that lends itself to making friends with random people sitting nearby, and theres a good chance youll leave with bruises or sore spots on your hands from the giant beer steins. As another plus, I ended up here a few years ago for New Years Eve. They played Europes The Final Countdown as we all counted down to midnight, which brought me endless amusement. No, Gob was not there and there were no magic tricks and/or illusions :(
After being seated, no one else came around or acknowledged our existence for over ten minutes (as we noted the number of empty tables both inside and outside). I have no clue about the quality of the food or drink due to the bad service, but they will remain a mystery.
Location of our annual schnitzel fest, I love this joint. The sausages are amazing, spatzle is excellent, and the schitzle should not be missed. Order liter sized beers to wash it all down. Only downside: they typically have a foosball table which wasnt there this year. Will make sure its back before booking next years fest.
Hey it’s your business so if you have an arcane cash only policy in 2018fine with me.But you darn well better make it obvious with well posted signs and don’t act like a rude fool when surprised clients spend $10 and query a $2.50 bank fee at your ATM.The waitresses aren’t pros but so what. But if you are a manager you are in the hospitality business.Treat customers with the same respect you ask for yourself. It really isn’t that hard to do.
This is my regular place to get my German culture fix. Everyone is extremely nice, although it does get quite crowded on Fridays and Saturdays. I took some Aussies here and they rightly called the liter-steins big f**k-off beers. The name had a good ring to it, so it has stuck between my group of friends. Its fairly dark inside, but if you look closely the whole design is to give it a wooden beer garden feel. Imagine youre outside in the dark drinking huge beers in Germany on a park bench. Ive never been to Octoberfest, but if I did, Im sure I wouldnt be able to remember it. Anyway, this place is great.
They have a Das Boot....Need I say more? I havent been here in a while, but every time I go, I enjoy myself. My favorite beer Aventinus, they have on tap (which I havent seen anywhere else in NY). It gets a little rowdy sometimes, but all in good fun. Additionally, the seating is similar to that of a normal biergarten. The pretzels are good from what I have heard, and the staff is really friendly. I am also a big fan of the fake tree inside. Its a great spot to day drink in the summer when they have tables outside.
Get this. And then get it again. And then get it with sauerkraut. Their food is all around delicious, but this is just addictive.I love their beer, their service is pretty fast, reasonably friendly, and finding a seat is surprisingly easier than it appears, even though its always crowded.
This place is for you if you like an inconvenient commute down into Alphabet City, a slow and mobbed bar, changing staff that will never remember you and a cash-only policy. Food is generally decent but too expensive and the crowd qualifies as infantile. Think Studio 54 with Lederhosen. There are far better German restaurants in this city, such as Paulaner nearby and Max Bratwurst in Astoria.
Carnival party was very bad organized, stating on the website that tickets are sold at the door at 7pm. Even though the place is empty they are waiting for the ticket holders to get in for two hours now. Bad management. Coming from Cologne I can simply say you screwed up a Karnevalsparty
You dont have to make a fashion statemet with lederhosen or even have a thirst for beer to enjoy this alphabet city institution. the friendly staff and even friendlier crowd in the indoor bavarian beer garden will make you feel at home no matter where you hail from. and the food is as authentic as you can get. the sausage platter and wiener schnitzel are my favorites. but, try to plan your first visit during one of the numerous events to really savor the flavor of this place. i am not just talking octoberfest though they do that one quite well. it seems that every month the staff comes up for
Big authentic beers. look. i live down the street. this is a no brainer. but either way. you want a german beer in nyc. this is your place. this is where german expats go for a drink, or two, or five. you can hear the german being spoken. the waitress are lovely, and strong, (the beers are huge) they have normal pours, but when on avenue c/germany... well you know the saying. ive eaten everything here from sausage plates and porkchops to the german breakfast. all terrific, but really just excuses for big ole beers. ask for the beers that are not on the menu. they are the only spot in the usa that serves a couple beers on tap. and of course. make it a large. oh also. oktoberfest. live german band. leiderhosen. need I say more.
Best german food in NYC. Keep in mind your are in the USA not germany - so even though its not like perfect its way beyond good. THey have a ton of festivals - pretty fun - dont have bad thigns to say about this palce at all except that it would be nice if kids got seating priority during events (saw a bunch of drunks cutting the line and taking seats that a family would have had - that was a shame. )

2018-09-17East Village Biergarten with nice selection of German Biers and traditional dishes. Lively atmosphere can inspire song and dance, which locals and travellers can enjoy til the early morning hours. Flex your arm muscles and order a Maß (1 liter). Keep an eye out for events, especially Oktoberfest! Cash only.

2018-01-06Nice decor, but it pretty much stops there. The selection is very limited (virtually non-existent outside of beer, and not great even for that), and prices are not cheap. Add to that the fact its cash only, and theres more convenient and comfortable places around. Its a shame, because the location is quaint and would be nice.

2017-10-03Relived the hofbrauhaus memory from my eurotrip back in 2008. We got the wiener schnitzel and sausages both of which tasted pretty good. It being the Oktoberfest the environment was so lively and I would highly recommend this place

2017-07-12I have had amazing experiences at their location on Ave C and at their special events too. The Oktoberfest event that runs for 11 days is as realistic a representation of the Munich experience as you are likely to find in NYC. I just recently attended their July 4th fireworks viewing party and it was the best way to enjoy this that I have ever seen. Great beer and food at a fair price. It wasnt overcrowded and so much better than standing with the masses with no beer or toilets:) And a front row view of the fireworks!
